GODDDDDDDDD THE YEARNINNNNGGGGG

Ragtime

almost out...........so very close to out...

Duck BB

Why can’t everyone be happy? Why must life be like this? 😭

GPanda

President Snow voice: look at this They’re holding hands

Megh

Just fuckin kiss already!

Populuxe

There are going to be broken hearts, no matter which way this shakes out.

Andrea Andrew

They can’t let go. They never should have to.

The25th

Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!

P J Upton

We can’t let go of this, even as we explain it away, even as we say it’s not the right time. This is real, and our hearts are still tangled…

C

The level of hand holding is something else...

Uniquitous

I have a message from a Mr. Y. Bird: JUST FUCK ALREADY

Tim Mitchell

Oh you horrible person. I just woke my wife giggling.

Megh

So I'm gonna reveal that I'm secretly a boomer by asking this but, what do you mean by eating rocks exactly? I've seen you make that joke before but I'm still not quite sure what it means beyond basic context clues

AE Gonzalez

Few better places to bond than a jail cell.

Tim Mitchell

You two need to go well away from there and have a serious talk. A REALLY serious talk. Very far from there.

Jesse

Hehehehehe

HenryVolt

Way to make this protest about you, guys. I mean we're all wondering where this leads but still.

Railway Series Book Club

im not really sure if it has any specific meanings outside the way i've typically heard it, which is my friends and i being driven so crazy by Happenings that (hyperbolically) we need to eat a rock or do something similarly absurd to release the frenzied emotions

C.T. Phipps

Joyce: So, uh, what's Bulmeria?

Andrea Andrew

I guess you could say there’s a clash of opposite paths happening.

William Lewis

Oh. God. Been there. It hurt so bad when an unintentional thee-way blew to hell... I hope you two find joy, because you both deserve it. That's all ...

TobyTura

you know in horror movies where the nosy teenagers finally decide to leave the haunted house but then they linger in the entryway a moment too long and thats when the evil spirits slam the doors shut and lock them in? yeah

David M Willis

i assume this line is performed by the droid midwife from revenge of the sith

Harold

@Ragtime: Double meaning intentional?

Grace Serenity

"I really can't stay..." "Baby it's cold outside..."

Grace Serenity

Yes. Mmhmm. Very straight hand holding. Nothing deeper, and DEFINITELY not queer!

C

I was just hearing a bit of the chorus to "Kiss the Girl" in my head while reading the strip.

Ragtime

Yes as in "out of the closet".

Packy Anderson

The moment they got away from Jocelyn...

Packy Anderson

Welcome to Team "I Have No Idea What The Kids Are Talking About Half The Time". It's not that bad being a boomer.

William Lewis

They are so in love... God damn it is so pretty....

Harold

Jocelyne, somehow seeing them lingering at the exit: "WHAT ARE YOU DOING I DON'T MEAN THE HANDHOLDING THAT'S ADORABLE AND WE'LL TALK ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS LATER BUT GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE"

Alison Berry

Someone start blasting Rihanna's We Found Love (in a hopeless place)

Maybeeus

There are two timelines. One where Joyce leaves Dorothy here and goes back to Joe and does the responsible thing. And then there's the other timeline where she proceeds to immediately say fuck it and suck face with Dorothy.

Bronxden

And then they fucked

Fart Captor

"Maybe we should throw this Molotov at the cops" "Oh, Dorothy!" *kissing noises*

Andrea Andrew

I guess we should cut the crap (awful album).

Harold

Amidst all this bi-glorious drama, let's not overlook the fact that Dorothy *agrees* with Joyce when she notes how hard Joe's been trying to be good to her. This is a *huge* acknowledgement for Dorothy.

Shane Wegner

And for the rest of the movie (or their short lives, whichever comes first) there’s this weird tension of “I feel bad for your suffering, but vaguely feel like you also sort of deserve it because you CAN’T! PRIORITIZE!”

Megh

Oh I've been here a while, for better or worse. I wasn't sure what the kids were talking about half the time when I WAS a kid

Vivian

You forgot the timeline where Joe and Sarah show up right as they're about to kiss

Jeremy AR

The throuple will be real just you wait

shiftdruid

the cops watching these two have a touching moment and thinking to themselves "man I can't wait to beat these kids up"

Sajuuk-Khar

I like that Dorothy is acknowledging this a lot, but like: -I don’t get why Joyce is wording it like that??? Has he somehow been failing to be good to her?? In what context?? -comparing Joe’s effort to have and preserve the relationship with Walky’s absolute apathy is comparing an apple to a dragon fruit

Buck Caldwell

"Why don't we just get in the running car???"

Jeremy AR

I honestly don't get what you mean with the way she worded it? It seems like a pretty straightforward description of what Joe been doing. And Dorothy is not comparing Joe snd Walky in any way?

Jasmijn Wellner

"We really can't say" "But baby it's cold outside"

Katrina Marie Paton

Just as Joe and Sarah are about to kiss? I'd go for that! (and yes, I know thats not what you meant but...)

Sajuuk-Khar

“He’s been trying so very hard to be good to me” implies, to me, that the attempt hasn’t reached its goal, that it’s *just* an effort. That’s probably not intended, it’s just an issue I’m taking with the wording because my brain is pedantic AND paranoid lmao And also to clarify, I do not mean *Dorothy* is making the comparison, she would never! I *feel* like the narrative, or Willis I guess? is implying an equivalence that isn’t there, and it has my hackles up a bit. My jimmies were rustled.

Sajuuk-Khar

“No seriously I can’t, there’s gonna be pepper spray”

Bagge

Gaaaah! That panel composition!

Kelly (they-them)

If Joyce stays and gets arrested, that's something that wasn't even on her parents' radar to worry about Joyce doing or experiencing at the beginning of the semester For my own amusement, I'm gonna take stock of all the things Joyce has done or experienced since college that would upset her parents/Carol specifically 1. Been assaulted multiple times (getting that one out of the way - they do both care about her physical safety. ...to an extent, looking at you, Carol 2. Supported a queer and/or genderqueer person 3. Be a queer person 4. Take birth control pills 5. Pursue an autism diagnosis (this one I imagine wasn't drilled into Joyce's head as something evil or to be afraid of, but I bet Carol wouldn't like it. Also, Joyce technically isn't pursuing the diagnosis yet but whatever) 6. Attend an episcopalian church 7. Cease attending church 8. Cease belief in God 9. Imbibed/ gotten drunk 10. Disagreed with her parents and then stood her ground about it 11. Draw a naked person 12. View a naked person 13. Have, according to some definitions, pre-marital sex 14. Rode a motorcycle (I don't know how much they'd disapprove of this one, but they probs wouldn't be jazzed about) 15. I'm not sure if I should include a belief in evolution, cuz I think Joyce might still be cranky about that herself. Like, sure, she SUPPOSES evolution must be true, but has Joyce actually internalized it? That's all I can think of right now. Joyce is really speed running ways to disappoint a parent in college. What else could be left for her? Bad grades and getting a tattoo, I suppose.

Inquiring Raven

Now I’m just getting trauma flashbacks to horrible skinemax movies all about contrived lesbians in prison… and how they made a young me very very confused.

joe mcguire

Dorothy, Joyce, we understand the metaphor, and it’s very poignant, but HOLY SHIT YOU GOTTA MOVE BEFORE YOU GET YOUR ASSES BEAT WITH A THIN BLUE LINE!! Be Poignant *later!*

Jeremy AR

Yeah I think that is entirely a you thing.

Andrea Andrew

Is anyone else here a clash fan? The clash seem like a relevant band right now.

Andrea Andrew

I’m sure the cops are both homophobic and transphobic.

Uniquitous

My taking is just fine. It's a good size.

tifani

Throuple? No, no, no, no. POLYCULE? 💯

tifani

She needs to just shove them through the gate

Harold

Take my hand, take my whole life too 'Cause I can't help Dumbing in love with you

Railway Series Book Club

@Sajuuk-Khar: I feel like she's wording that way mostly to talk herself out of whatever rash, Dorothy-Kissy thing she might feel compelled to do in that moment. "This would really hurt Joe after all the effort he's put in, gotta keep things completely platonic with my bestie."

Ph

I initially saw the top-right panels as the doors closing right there in front of them, until I saw the bottom-right panel.

Genevieve

They are KILLING ME (complementary)

Harold

@QueenOfSodor: My reading exactly! Thanks for putting it into thoughts and words better (and more concisely, probably) than I could have. Of course, the lingering handhold at the end could very well be an indication that it's not going to work for either one of them, and that this will be remembered as The Worst (or is it The Best?) First-Kiss Location EVER.

Grace Serenity

I can say from personal experience, it took me nearly a decade to deprogram the "young earth" bullshit from my brain. I actually stopped believing in God years before I stopped believing in the Creation!

Rob McBobson

@Grace: If you're willing, I'd be EXTREMELY interested to hear how that worked, mentally. Like, how your worldview looked with a young earth but no God.

Kelly (they-them)

@Grace, I can't quite wrap my mind around your thought process, but that makes a certain sense to me. Obviously, Joyce isn't real, but I assume Willis is drawing a lot from their own experiences with "atheist growing pains". It's an entire world view and web of beliefs to deconstruct. I'd also be interested to hear more if you're willing to share.

Grace Serenity

It's more like I didn't really examine my beliefs at the time. My deconversion was more that I just stopped going to church. I look at my coming out as bi as the milestone of the break, but it really was more gradual. And the "young Earth" stuff is PERNICIOUS. They really hammer in "evolution = EVIL" and anyone that believes in it is a moron and going to hell.
