Ria

Fr tho fighting for justice IS a lot like lesbian sex – it's sacred, healing, and liberating for you and for the world

Megh

I see Carla got to Mary's sign

Ria

And you can kiss girls while u do it

HenryVolt

Playing the long game is a bitter pill.

el

oh, this strip is hitting hard. Im currently living with my... Less than ideal parents. And I could move out, but it wouldn't be smart... But sometimes, you have to make that leap, huh? I hope Dorothy does with Joyce, at least-- that's relatively lower stakes than potential homelessness. PS: the payoff of Mary's sign is fantastic

Andrea Andrew

We can all relate, Dorothy, waiting for our society to get rid of Republicans (and Democratic leaders), embrace socialism, and impeach the orange in a wig, “later”. The problem with endgame romances is they’re always “later”

Smoochie

Dorothy has just realized when something or someone is right there? “Get it now.” Canadian rapper Bless would be proud.

Tom @ Magic Chopstick Games

Yes, Dorothy. Take the step. It’s like my favorite saying: “If you’re not liberal when you’re twenty, you have no heart; if you’re not conservative when you’re fifty, you have a heart”

E

Mary got pranked

Maude Reads Things

Sometimes, yeah, you have to play the long game and leaving now to fight another day is more effective than staying and losing your ability to help later because you've been taken off the board one way or another.

Railway Series Book Club

dorothy's words in panel 4 hit really close to home, i've been there vis-a-vis feelings for others... and because of that i'm willing to overlook her interpreting what's happening at the protest as a metaphor for her yearning, which reads as a bit funny lol. reminds me of when she had to tell joyce that she can't use her poor eyesight as a metaphor for all the crazy shit that happened before/during the timeskip!

Megh

I'm no good at visual metaphor, especially right now cause I only got like 3 hours of sleep last night But I am trying so damn hard to read the meaning of Joyce and Dotty's hand holding going from interlocked fingers to Joyce holding Dotty's fist

Harold

@Megh: Dotty's gonna punch a cop

Harold

@Magic Chopstick Games: I think Mary's on the *outside* of the protest area (I assume that's where counter-protesters would be). She's actually standing between two riot officers.

Megh

@Harold: Funny as that would be we've seen Dotty in preview panels, and I think if she does that she's gonna find herself pushing up daisies

Kazo

Oh Mary has definitely clocked the lesbianism.

Populuxe

This is not how I wanted to finish the day, genuinely scared for the life of a fictional character.

KaylaZX

KISS HER DOROTHY!! DO THE THING YOU'RE THINKING! KISS HERRR

Sajuuk-Khar

Main site comments tomorrow are gonna have a seventy-five reply long trail about how Carla did a sin and a crime by doing that to Mary’s sign

Megh

A really fucking cool crime

Kelly (they-them)

Aw, I was having fun thinking of Mary counter protesting in the middle of the field and getting arrested. And fuxk this, the counter protestors get to exercise their first first amendment right cuz they're supporting the hegemony and the status quo. I hate this goddamn country.

Kelly (they-them)

It took me a moment to realize that Carla made that sign

Kelly (they-them)

I feel you on your living situation. I'm in the same boat

C.T. Phipps

I wish the world wasn't burning that them overlooking everything in Bulmeria so they can worry about their own love didn't feel so...small. Then again, this is Dumbing of Age not, "Politically Aware of Age."

Smoochie

@Megh I take it as Dorothy’s realization that she can’t just sit and wait for everything—they have to walk away from this protest in the hopes of real change, hoping something can be done in the future. She was waiting to go to Yale—but so much changed. She thought she had her future pegged down through all the hard work—but so much changed. In the here and now—her and Joyce going back to Walky and Joe respectively, waiting to see what the future unfolds? She can’t do it anymore. She doesn’t want to do it anymore. She can’t change the world, but Dotty can in the here and now change something. Her relationship status with Joyce. No more waiting.

Genevieve

Just off panel: 🎶"Shalalalalala don't be scared! You better be prepared go on and Kiss the Girl"🎶

Giant Speck

When they said "be gay do crimes" they meant it, damn it.

Sajuuk-Khar

Instead of Sebastian it’s Dexter the Alien with an inadvisable Jamaican patois

Sajuuk-Khar

This is, uhh, a really weird take considering that Dorothy explicitly acknowledges the political issue at hand as a problem, even if there is clearly unspoken tension in dialogue with their own yearning? she’s…not overlooking it??? Also, what in the hell do you want them to do for Bulmeria, they are two college students, not members of Congress or even university trustees

Maybeeus

Dorothy gets it. Life is too short, you can't keep pushing all of your dreams off until tomorrow when tomorrow becomes a shakier and shakier promise. Sometimes my brain likes to do things in absolute orders and if i break those it gets very mad. In my case most of the time this means i can't play new entries in big video game series because i have to play the older ones first and catch up. Eventually the backlog got so bad that i realized there was a chance that i had more games than i could play in my own lifetime. Stop putting things off and pursue what makes you happy now. Happiness isn't something that needs to be earned or bestowed. It's not an endgame, it's something that should always be by your side. (i might be a tiny bit very tired writing this)

C.T. Phipps

Rephrased: Basically, it's pretty sad that this romance is happening with the backdrop of a standin for such a tragedy that's still ongoing. That's going to be awkward if its endgame is all I'm sayin.

Pangab

If you think about it, all of our romances are always taking place in a world full of tragedy. It can be beautiful that love still blossoms anyway rather than diminishing it.

Beth Martin

As an IU alum, these last few strips have been extremely heartbreaking but I'm so grateful to have these things explored in this strip I've loved for decades. <3

Girlycore

This is the perfect comment

Terra Bruder

Let's be real; life is hard enough for oppressed people without having to navigate a fascism

Rob McBobson

I don't understand your first sentence, grammatically. (English isn't my native language.) The one with "I wish the world wasn't burning..." Is there a typo (which is totally understandable) or am I the one with the problem?

Gale Tazzin

is that Mary with the "my face is a butt" sign

Harold

@Gale Tazzin: Carla deflected from the difficult conversation she was having with Charlie about her family's complicity by racing off to prank Mary by swapping out her counterprotest sign.

Harold

@Sajuuk-Khar: Like Brad Pitt in that one scene from MEET JOE BLACK (I realize this might be a really obscure reference, since most people probably have not seen that film, but trust me, look up that scene, it's a doozy)

Harold

@Populuxe: If it helps, Dorothy and Joyce are both alive and well and walking free in the preview panels Willis has posted to Tumblr. (Unless there's going to be, like, a months-long timeskip to when they finally get released from detention.)

Harold

Does anyone remember that photo that went viral a few years ago of a couple sharing a passionate kiss amidst the chaos of a street protest being aggressively broken up? Not sure why that picture just came to mind. No reason at all, really...

Megh

@Harold: there's still snow on the ground in some of the preview panels, so if there is a time skip it would have to be like a week at most

Andrea Andrew

I guess Carla knew Mary is incredibly stupid. If Mary sees Joyce and Dorothy kiss…oh no.

Harold

@Megh: I don't think Daisy would mind that. HEY-O--- Oh wait

Dan Rabin

There have been several different hand-holds in the last few strips of Joyce and Dorothy at the protest—two different ones in today's strip. I see: Joyce pulling Dorothy along so as not to disappear over the horizon on her; Joyce having to drag Dorothy away from wanting to remain at the protest with Jocelyne; Symmetric we're-together interlacing following Joyce-leading-Dorothy-to-safety in the immediate previous strip; Dorothy seeking comfort, then Joyce providing it, in the current strip.

Railway Series Book Club

read through the main site comments on the July 6th strip this morning and was very amused by the sheer number of people going "no, joyce and dorothy can't kiss now! there will be ramifications that send ripples through the entire main cast and ultimately upheave the status quo!" as if like. that should be at all a deterrent for anybody who wants to see an actual *story* unfold. like, OH NO, DEVELOPMENTS MAY BE OCCURRING, THE HORROR!!! [insert "What's the matter, Lagerboy? Afraid you might taste something?" beer ad here] (i mean i guess they might be feeling that way because they don't *want* this story to be occurring, but like. literally all of the tension will be deflated if they flip a switch and become Optimal Decision Logic Machines who will instantly break away so they can ask for boyfriend permission to french each other. the hormonal tension between these women is at a fever pitch, they're past the point of asking permission, i think they're gonna have to settle for asking forgiveness)

zee

Life is hard enough for oppressed people bc of fascism. There's just, even more fascism now

zee

I let my subscription run out and was just gonna come back when willis mugged me for 5 dollars with the plot again. Which, just so happened to be the very next day

zee

@Rob It was phrased very weirdly and difficult to read as an English speaker. The follow up is much better

Megh

Personally at this point I'll be disappointed if they don't smooch and cause a huge mess in the process soon But I'm also pretty firmly in the SICKOS camp sooooo

Mariah

I just want them to kiss out of spite at this point god just let the college students be messy there will be consequences but people acting like this would make joyce or dorothy "irredemable" is ridiculous to me.

Mariah

there are peoole in the slice of life/ cozy space that seem to be alergic to conflict anything challenging the status quo but DOA has never been like that multiple things have change the plot rather dramatically I swear people are acting more upset then when mike died.

Mariah

team sickos vs team "moral purity"

Mariah

I have notice purity culture crop up in fandom and its distressing to see it happen to this one Im sure some younger fans have gotten into the comic but this "If joyce makes a mistake she is evil" is not in my view what the comic is about. This sort of cultural christian fundementalism is just fundie culture with a different coat of paint I hate it.

Railway Series Book Club

yeah, like... what Joyce and Dorothy may do may not be good, but the idea that they'd be irredeemably evil for indulging in their feelings for each other is absurd. like, the moderate take on this, i feel like, would be that they'd reach that level if they started having actual full-on clandestine gay sex with each other and never tell their partners ever. but like, the current stage they're at, exploring whether or not they're in love with the other, and maybe having that culminate in an impulsive kiss? no way in hell would that be irredeemable. you're right to say it reflects fundamentalist culture, and since this comic has built its entire identity around rejecting fundamentalism, i don't think anybody should be surprised at these two chafing under the confines the audience is putting them under.

Gale Tazzin

oh, they aren't going to kiss. it's gonna just be a long wistful chaste gaze that is far gayer than actual sex
