Tents cost more than $20…unnnless that guy was just about to leave anyway and abandon it for $0, in which case this is a great windfall for him. (Or it’s not his tent and he just happens to be standing next to it, heh heh.) And what’s your plan for food, water and toilet paper Dorothy? As often happens with well meaning people popping over to disaster zones, you might just end up being a burden on the supplies of people who actually planned ahead. Or maybe the plan is just to get arrested and get a jail dinner of foods all touching each other? What if the cops just fence them in and leave it at that for a while?

The real line for me is the tent purchase combined with the timeline they were given. That tent would have either been left behind as the person fled the police, they payment would have been reject and it just would have been handed over, and (this one is the most nitpicky) if they did take their tent it wouldn't be rolled so nicely considering the timetable of when the police are moving in. Frankly you don't join a solidarity encampment and have a nonchalantnance about someone offering to buy your tent.

I wonder what’s motivating Dorothy to do this? Is she distancing herself from Joyce? Is she unwilling to return to her miserable life with Walky? In all seriousness, I know she’s doing this to change her ways. She’s been trying to justify being centrist and not pursuing Joyce, and I think after she’s finished here, she’s going to actually move forward rather than backwards.

I'll defer to your experience on the other stuff, but the tent payment being accepted seems plausible to me. The guy might be in poor financial shape, and really need the money. Maybe that's not how most people would act, but it comes off as fairly realistic to me.
