Minzoku Bokumetsu

Clark Kent, absolutely a born U.S. citizen and not an illegal immigrant from an exploded planet

P J Upton

And that’s the second preview panel for this month now. …so now we have the rest of this week and next to worry

Ria

Oh sweet darling carla, you will so quickly learn how much you need this kind of pushback from charlie

WT Harmon

It's the glasses. They trick you. A guy told me so.

Jeremy AR

Carla does carries herself like a sitcom character.(Pos)

C

There are numerous ways the Clark-Superman thing can be done. From a full body language, voice, etc shift, to hypno glasses, to Superman just able to do that himself, to Superman vibrating his face so it always appears blurry to people...to just people believing what they want to believe.

Maude Reads Things

That's an awkward, painful place to be. Where someone you love so much can be terrible in some ways but they're not terrible to you or in other areas where you really need them to be like Carla growing up trans in Trump's Indiana. Part of me wishes we could've gone for fictional ethical billionaires so she could keep her wonderful parents who love her so much but then, that's never been DOA's style for exploring the painful reality of the people we love.

Harold

This is very likely the first time Carla has ever cared what someone (other than her parents) thinks of her. It's striking to see her this vulnerable.

Alexis Smith

I really hope I see their relationship grow more, this could be really fascinating.

Lazuli

and he maybe doesnt wear hypno glasses

Kelly (they-them)

I love Carla referencing Clark Kent's anonymity because this almost exactly the way that Amazi-Girl is not recognized as Amber

GundamBradley

Kinda, though Amber's also pretty reclusive, so a lot of the campus just do not really know her.

Kelly (they-them)

Danny spent so much time with Amber and Amazi-Girl with nary a clue that they share a body

GundamBradley

Carla really does love her parents, and I imagine her usual pride in Ruttech, and them, is more a reason for her discomfort than being in a position of privilege due to ethically dubious money. Still, I do really wonder how her relationship will impact this, like Booster DID essentially warn her this was going to happen.

Rubia

...Y'know, come to think of it... It's possible. I mean, I know I've never seen either of them and Superman together before!

C.T. Phipps

I wonder if Ruttech provides weapons only to Bulmeria or if it's also doing for the Ukraine equivalent. Arms trafficking isn't something any company can get involved in if they want to remain good but it's two very different conflicts that are happening at the same time. Do Carla's parents support where their weapons are sent, have any influence on it, or not care?

Reverend Jundas

Superman has had his top ripped in battle so we know he's not binding.

Trinityfan99

Every time, people bring up Clark Kent’s glasses I usually take it as a litmus test on how well they know Superman as a character. If they introduce something that “justifies” them like having a hypnosis effect or some other preternatural explanation, it shows me that they have a limited understanding and don’t get why that’s a pretty essential part of the character.

Morgan Byrd

Are you and Jephjacques about to do the same scion-of-defense-contractors plot at the same time [complimentary]

darklion

Congratulations Carla you are now in charge of Ruttech (oops spoilers)

HeroGirlsVT

I see we're making the rounds and checking in on all of the other couples that Willis has been slowly moving into place. Not every ship is going to survive the oncoming storm. Pray, my sailors. Pray.

Dan Rabin

It might not be just the couples as such, but a more general effect of the protest on the characters we know, looking at the wider world they will soon be contending with.

Jesse

It’s a paradigm shift!

T Campbell

Wait, what time is it in-strip? Is it time for...VALENTINE'S DAY?

Amanda Miller

Tell us more? What's the real driver?

Astariel

Poor Carla. She's in a tough spot here, and it's not her fault.

Sajuuk-Khar

Carla you deserve one billion hugs, this has to be awful Also I hope we meet the Ruttens and they’re absolute sweethearts who also cannot just stop selling tech to Bulmeria, sweetie, where is this coming from?

Sajuuk-Khar

He’s a good boy, but he’s not always a SMART boy

NAtAyAZAlnAk

If they want to remain good?

Astariel

I doubt they have any say in where their weapons are used. They probably sell to the military, and from there the military and the politicians decide what they do with them.

Trinityfan99

In the original comics, Superman is the only person to see people as they really are, the rest of the Superman universe either dismisses people either unintentionally or, in the case of really toxic people, quite intentionally. Because of that they undermine Clark’s ability even though he’s a top notch investigator (although not the best reporter because he hides his true involvement in his stories, but he is a better detective than Batman, because he’s able to discover crimes through his investigations while Batman usually reacts when a crime has already occurred). The disguise itself is inspired by Jerry Siegel’s experiences as a bespectacled science fiction nerd, as he was constantly ridiculed and undermined because of who he was. It took him five years for him and Joe Shuster to finally publish Superman, but when they did they completely changed the industry and American culture.

Trinityfan99

This allegory is still in effect today as people are taught to constantly undermine other people’s abilities. As an example, if you are good at your job, your bosses and colleagues will try to hide that from you, because if people know their true value then they could (rightfully) ask for more recognition. Having Superman wear hypno glasses, dilutes the themes because it presents Clark’s glasses as a supernatural phenomenon used to hide his identity, rather than the social allegory it was intended to be. It actually makes the story less grounded.
