"I, Dina, am dating God now." (edited for Joke Clarity)

E

Oh no… I should have seen this pattern crossing over from the walkyverse

Megh

holy shit

KittyKai

..........😢😢😢😢

Andrea Andrew

Oh no.😥 I understand it’s only been a year, and Becky’s gone through a lot, but geez. Dina, you precious soul.

Empress of Robots

Hey! It's a paraphrase of the title for the next arc! What a co-inky-dink!

Buck Caldwell

"Time to fix the problem." Dina's not gonna let it end this easily. She's too pragmatic.

yootie

the yuri giveth and the yuri taketh away

MrShoggoth

Willis, it’s not a non-extradition country, but Australia is the size of the continental US with less than a tenth of the population. If you need to, feel free to encamp here while you wait for things to blow over. There’s plenty of places you can hide at down here. And the food is better!

Mohmi

Z TARGETED FOR MAXIMUM DAMAGE

LupinThe8th

What are the shipping rates like for Transformers down under? Answer quickly, a man's life may be at stake.

William Lewis

"Just walk away, Dina You won't see me follow you back home The empty sidewalks on my block are not the same You're not to blame"

AE Gonzalez

That might be where she’s planning to go.

el

Absolutely atrocious last 24 hours for Becky huh

Vivian

Ow :(

C Bonesmith

Nah she might become many things, but a Catholic? Perish the thought!

GundamBradley

I am trying to cut Becky some slack, truly, but man, does she makes some ludicrously self-destructive moves sometimes.

Uniquitous

Dina knows her own worth. Good for her.

Smoochie

And what happened then? Well, in Commentsville they say, that the Paladins gained a rampaging dinosaur that day.

Yeoman

Yeah, that’s my hope. She needs Becky to treat her as her own person worthy of love, for both their sakes and the sake of their relationship. Here’s hoping she goes to someone for advice.

voyager-ngc5195

It's not like Dina to just drop a bomb and leave. Usually she locks herself in with the bomb.

Tessea

*jaw drops* I can NOT see Dina being outright cruel about this. But this is just..... *hugs Becky*

MrShoggoth

Not sure but we have some (comparatively) cheap flights to Japan and all the Osaka toy shops were overloaded with Transformers when I was there last year?

Harold

It's that last empty panel - confirming that Dina has left the room - that really drives home how depressing this strip is. If panel 5 had been the final panel of the day, we could reasonably have considered it a "what-will-Dina-say-next-maybe-this-won't-actually-be-so-bad" cliffhanger. But we know now she won't say anything next, because she's not there anymore. Fuck.

5099 5618 v2.0

"I'm going to feed you your own heart." --Possibly also Dina, probably to Joyce (Not seriously. I do think this is as close to rage as we're likely to see her, anytime soon, tho)

The Aphro Chick

So with everything going on, no one is around to make sure Becky doesn't self delete at this point. Cuz her expression is very self-deletous

Waifu Purplebutt

Becky isn't "in the wrong", but the problem is with her and her hang-ups over Joyce.

Syl

damn you willis…

Anatoly Bertolli

This seems an unpopular opinion but I think Becky deserves Dina's rath, she has been open and clear about her boundaries and insecurities of being a consolation prize and Becky continued to lead her on and continued to be jealous of all things Dorothy. Made the bed now it's time to lie in it.

I Know Why the Mowed Lawn Screams

I’ve come to the conclusion Dina should be allowed to hunt Joyce for sport for indirectly blowing up her relationship. Just this once <3

Dan Rabin

Very subtle. Dina's first line says that she had not expected her rebound status with Becky still to be active: she's hurt to be wrong about this. She turns her back. Becky is remorseful about hurting Dina in this way, but also voices the insight that Dina would have had to lead her to anyhow. So Dina pauses for a beat panel, turns slightly toward both Becky and the door, confirms Becky's insight, and leaves, emptying the frame. It would be easy to read this as "I've had enough of your insecurity in this matter, and I can't be your girlfriend if this is going to be a permanent mope." *But*, this is Dina, and Becky is now appreciating her own irrationality, and that's the message Dina would have had to deliver anyhow. So Dina is still hurt, but the necessary thing for her to do here is done, so she can leave. I don't know whether Becky will act on her insight, or whether they're done, but all that is for subsequent strips—this one is very good, and very subtle.

Laura

From the very beginning Becky has expressed to Dina fears that she isn’t good enough for her. Homeless disaster lesbian. Christian hangups about sex. Very horny (in the context of Dina being ace). Every time Dina has chosen to reaffirm that she loves Becky for who she is, while validating that it’s okay that Becky has these insecurities. All she’s asked for, really, is for Becky to trust in their partnership. So when Dina brings up the lingering horrible notion that she herself is not good enough for Becky- and Becky can’t immediate refute it… well, I understand why she chose to walk away this time.

Gwen Sanger

What I LOVE is that Dina doesn't seem /angry/ about this. She's not sugar coating it, and she's hurt, but there's no obvious anger or jealousy. This isn't Dora and Martin, this is her acknowledging the situation and giving Becky needed space.

Girlycore

Approved. I'll get the necessary paperwork.

Harold

No, no, that was back in October

Smoochie

The flashbacks of that relationship gave me whiplash.

Nicholas A. Jalowick

Oh wow, Dora and Marten. That's old-school Questionable Content continuity. "I was there, Gandalf. I was there 3,000 years ago when the ships failed." XD

Gwen Sanger

Maybe I'm being overly-optimistic about this, but I honestly think this relationship will survive and be stronger for the bump.

Girlycore

That was nowhere near cruel.

ArdieBea

This is the value of preview panels. We've seen an upright and active Becky with a new haircut in the future. I'm holding onto that. Furiously.

Anatoly Bertolli

I read Dina as literally calculating, not like scheming, but views life as a big equation inputs and outputs. And I think here she's making it clear she sees Becky is not legitimately attached to Dina beyond a surface level hanky panky, and it's time to flush the floater

Logibear

And thus God above did decree that the amount of Sapphic Love in the strip was too damn high. And thus he took it upon himself to balance this out in the cruelest of fashions.

Logibear

Agreed @Gwen Sanger. Methinks it might be a wee while until this heals though.

Smoochie

I swear to Sal’s Jacket if Tony and Sara argue about Joyce and Dorothy and it becomes their ‘we are on a break now’ spot…

Ph

Good.

Smoochie

Good, good. Will she be needing buckshot, martial weapons or perhaps Dina will just do this with her bare hands?

Astariel

Right, cause God forbid Joyce doesn't conduct her love life according to what would be most convenient for Dina.

Megh

as the ultimate sicko i welcome the drama

5099 5618 v2.0

@Steve Horton It... hasn't done that, right? There are still healthy relationships outside the Dojo, right? Tony and Sarah, at least, seem solid.

tifani

(Lights torch): Willis…run.

Logibear

"We're on a break" "We've been seeing each other for 2 days!"

5099 5618 v2.0

@Tifani (/The sky darkens as a great swarm of bees approaches...)

tifani

@theaphrochick Just say kill herself. This isn’t TikTok and no she’s not going to fucking kill herself Jesus christ . Killing her relationship (for now) is dramatic enough.

Avian

I don't actually think this is Becky leaving her? She is incredibly clear on her feelings typically. "yes, you are the problem." It's good you are aware of it and can work on it.

Logibear

So, surely this has to be the extent of the fallout right? Unless Willis feels like just turning around and sticking a fork in Danny+Sal saying "You're done"

Morgan Byrd

I will die if this breaks up Danny and Sal

Andrea Andrew

She’s worse than Dorothy at this point.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Aeryn Money I'd bet on it, but not more than i could safely lose.

ArdieBea

@C Bonesmith Episcopalians have religious orders, too.

Astariel

I don't see how it possibly could.

tifani

This really seemed like Becky knows her reaction to this isn’t fair to Dana. You can know you’re overacting but still get swallowed up in your pain. She can’t help how she feels but she knows what this extreme of a reaction would make Dana feel. She loves her but she’s in too much pain to fight for her. And she knows that Dana deserves to be fought for. So she has that self loathing on top of the broken heart. And Dana is so pissed she can’t be supportive and understanding right now. I think this is a break up but it strikes me as a for now not forever type of thing. Dana is not going to do the emotional labor of getting Becky through this. And she shouldn’t have to. But because this is going to take time for Becky to move past Dana can’t be here for it. That’s why she can’t even look at her. There’s love but there’s also so much anger.

Diane

Alright, time to preach a new, better, more amazing ship: Dina x Charlie. And not because both Becky and Carla would get some humble pie. That's just the happy bonus.

Diane

Naw, there's other ships to destroy. Like Tony and Sarah. Or Jacob and Lucy.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Morgan Byrd "[Kakyoin stare]" --Becky, apparently

ArdieBea

Aphro Chick has a point. Becky's been experiencing thoughts of self-harm in recent strips and the things she's said through the course of this day, like, "I need to not be anywhere" are definitely cues that I'd be anxious about if I heard them. Knowing what I know, now, that is; I'd have been oblivious when I was in college.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Diane I suspect Jacob and Lucy will not be affected. Not if another recent piece of art is any indication, that is.

ArdieBea

Beautifully expressed, thanks, Tifani.

tifani

I mean I think Danny is likely to be more pissed about this than Joe and at Dorothy. I think Sal is going to be out in an awkward position because of Walky. I think Sal and Danny are going to be the second couple after Becky/Dana to be put into an awkward situation about this whole thing. But not enough to break up about it. They’re just probably going to want to spend no time around Joyce or Dorothy.

darklion

Well, y'all got your Dorothy/Joyce pairing. Ambition always exacts its price.

Logibear

I hope Joe does actually go to his best friend to let him know his stance rather than letting Danny Dan it up

Rubia

Screw your courage to the sticking place!

MrShoggoth

Hey guys, imagine if Becky ends up falling into Raidah’s circle as part of the fallout from all this.

MatsuoTanuki

And a finger on the monkey's paw curls...

Elizabeth

Becky has things she needs to work on as a person, and that has been true for a long time — same with nearly the entirety of the cast. They are, after all, mostly teenagers. That is not in and of itself a reason to hate Becky, and I don’t think Dina is _mad_, just speaking bluntly as she usually does. I hope Becky takes this as a wakeup call, and grows from it, that it doesn’t just cause her to retreat and curdle. As opposed to the comment sections that have been particularly curdled lately.

Tom @ Magic Chopstick Games

I mean, what’s the upside for Raidah here? What transactional value can Becky provide for Raidah’s enrichment?

MrShoggoth

Someone close to Joyce she can use to get leverage over her, that’s my guess.

MrShoggoth

Willis’ Law of Shipping: for every new pairing there is an equal and opposite de-pairing.

Julian Williams

Dina is blunt to a fault. I would bet on this.

DramaQueen

This breakup and the boys at QC at the same time… so similar.

Megh

fun? fact: this is the 599th strip Dina appears in so close to exactly 600

SkibidiChungusFan

What could possibly be on that damn phone that's worth fumbling such an important conversation?

Fart Captor

Not even a year. I's barely even been a whole SEMESTER. She didn't come to Bloomington until like, late September. And that's about exactly how far we're into January. I'm not sure it's even been a full year since her mom died :/

Madison

Man Dina is usually right about shit but she’s really wrong here

Dmitri0240

If Becky's feelings over Joyce (someone she never even dated) seeing someone new are valid, then Dina's feelings over Becky (her current partner) continuing to pine over someone else are significantly more so. Dina is not obligated to sit around and wallow in being someone's backup plan, and choosing to leave is not cruel. Becky needs to find someone to talk through her feelings with; someone who's not her partner, her old crush, or her old crush's new partner.

Fart Captor

I mean, that's something that happens when a person gets into a really bad place emotionally and is riddled with guilt+grief+trauma on top of the usual teenage angst

Sajuuk-Khar

WELL! FUCKIN….OKAY, THEN

ProxityR

ive been #1 Dina fan for about 11 years now, I didnt think Becky getting with Dina was a good idea then, she needed to be alone and work out how to deal with Joyce not wanting her. Ive been in Dina's position before and its honestly the worst, I won't blame her if she leaves, I never normally hope for a sapphic couple to break up, but I genuinely think Becky needs to be alone to process this, she cant hide it behind what she feels for dina, its not good for her or for Dina.

Maybeeus

Hot take, i think people who are clearly having mental breakdowns/meltdowns deserve patience and respect. It's usually not something people can control and reprimanding them for it is just as effective as rubbing a dogs face in its own shit. All you do is reinforce self criticism and ultimately self hatred. Speaking from experience as someone who was diagnosed with autism at a young age and maybe also has BPD (but hasn't been officially diagnosed by anyone so maybe not please don't take my word for it please thank you) i've dealt with meltdowns my whole life and felt like nobody else in the world gets why and usually react badly whenever i have them. It's not something you have control over. There isn't a switch you can flip to turn it off. I had similar thoughts yesterday but refrained from sharing them because i got the feeling either people wouldn't agree or it was just a bit too heavy or personal for the funny college comics comment section but this is a topic i have personal stock in so here we goooooo

Fart Captor

No, I think she's correct. She's bein' a bit blunt (and frankly she's entitled to be cuz she's got feelings to and Becky's not exactly being gentle herself) but she's simply agreeing in recognizing that the problem is entirely on Becky's end. Becky's spiralling cuz her brain and feelings are a huge mess right now for reasons entirely unrelated to anything Dina did or could even have effected

Elizabeth

The world would be a better place if we could all manage even a modicum of empathy for one another

Sajuuk-Khar

Okay so, uhhh, lemme see if I can??? Say this??? I do not like Sarah’s narrative role in Joe’s drama—I think it is silly and unnecessarily lionizes, as QueenofSodor wisely put it and I should’ve listened to her at the time, his total lack of action. But I like her (kind, if dumb and unnecessary) action as a character. It makes her stocks go up with me. Dina’s narrative role in Becky’s drama here is very interesting and dynamic! It has me on the edge of my seat! Impressive plot work! Uhh, but, wow, I….hate this action????! Like…yeah, you shouldn’t have to be a doormat or fuckin’ anything, blah blah blah choose yourself and I know, I am ND myself, that it is sometimes hard to express properly but holy fucking shit that was…that *was* kind of awful? To say??? To someone with Becky’s history???? Like, Jesus, Dina, you had weird halting dialogue about her spur of the moment statement re: God and then fucking threw a rock at her???? I’m in shock???? Like if we agree that Ruth breaking up with Billie “to save her” was pretty fucked up SURELY THIS CODES AS KINDA FUCKED UP??? Unless Becky’s only value is as “Dina’s partner”? I…fuckin…yeah, that’s it! For right now!

Sajuuk-Khar

If anyone seriously responds to this with some Joe related shit I will block you and fold myself up like origami and jump in the trash I swear to Jesus. I brought that dude up SOLELY as compare and contrast this is NOT ABOUT HIM.

Sajuuk-Khar

I think it should go by McNinja rules—Joyce can call “BASE” at her dorm room and Dina has to call off the hunt, the hunt period lasts a season, etc

Rob McBobson

@Aeryn: You're right that it doesn't seem like Becky leaving her, but it does sort of feel like Dina's leaving Becky. (I'm saying "sort of feel like" because I can't accept anything more concrete than that, mentally)

Sajuuk-Khar

hey Harold and 5099 so about Red Flag setting sail

Ph

Becky has, for months, done this "bit" about being enemies with Dorothy over Joyce, sometimes in front of Dina, and now it turns out that it wasn't a bit in reality and those feelings for Joyce were all real. And the idea that Becky is reacting because she's seeing Joyce's less-traumatic-coming-out with a better dad doesn't sit well here, because Dina also came out with supportive parents. But Dina doesn't count as much as Joyce. Dina deserves better. Good for her for walking away.

Ria

Jesus that is painful

tifani

She’s desperately avoiding eye contact while in the middle of an emotional break down. Leave her alone. She can’t look at Dana because she does not want what is happening to be happening.

Ragtime

Would we then follow with Carla x Becky? Otherwise known as obnoxious self-centered red heads: the relationship.

Zesstra

TWO SHIPS ENTER, ONE SHIP LEAVES! — dumbingofage.com/futurewives

Ria

What is this in reference to I feel very lost

Sajuuk-Khar

On further reflection I can see where this might be from a place of angry care and good intentions but just like??? From the perspective of someone with depression let ALONE the CPTSD Becky’s got those sentences could have used some work!!! I guess *it’s not called Smarting of Age* lmao!!!

CleverCrumbish

Man I really feel like people in both comment sections for this comic devote hundreds of column inches to fastidious character and relationship analysis all of which seems very cogent, reasonable and insightful right up until you remember that almost every character in the narrative is between the ages of eighteen and twenty-one.

Tessea

Yeah, but the net effect is making Dina feel like a third wheel. Becky needs to _talk_ to Dina about things, not stay bottled up and focusing on her phone.

MiqoRems

Or maybe, just maybe, she's deeply hurt by the absolute complete fucking horseshit that Becky just pulled and hurt people sometimes say mean things to the person who hurt them? If you're going to give Becky a free pass for her trauma, then extend the same fucking grace to Dina.

Tessea

Oh I agree. It's the abruptness of it all. And Becky is not being very talkative either. They both need to sit down and talk it out, not live in pity party mode.

MiqoRems

*Mad*, no. Deeply hurt, almost certainly.

Sajuuk-Khar

Tifani this is very cogent and insightful, nice work

Smoochie

@Astariel the following would have to occur. - Ethan and Asher break up. - Walky, now free from the Dorothy Vortex and with Amber feeling she doesn’t deserve to be happy, dates Ethan. - Danny takes issue and brings this up to Sal, unable to let it go—on the surface because Walky and he have the same tastes, bubbling beneath, because he has unresolved emotions over Ethan. - And another one gone and another one gone, another one bites the dust.

Sajuuk-Khar

@FC: I don’t know if I agree she’s entitled to it but I think your read is probably the most correct one or I hope? It’s the correct one? I still do not think it was too good to put it like that to a Becky who cannot possibly process it as intended but they are all goddamn teens

Tessea

A distraction. An excuse to not engage with people.

Sajuuk-Khar

In the It’s Walky! comic continuity, Dina sacrificed herself for her colleagues by locking herself and a bomb planted by bad dudes in a bomb proof lab. Which had a plexiglass window because of course it did. Her final words were “I’m sorry, this was the best I could do.” One hopes this is not a similar sentiment

NinjaZaku

*sighs* Gods damn it, Becky.

Siberian Rabbit

I don't even like Carla that much, it really feels like it's been 10 years since she's done anything interesting, but why the hell is she catching strays here?

Rob McBobson

@Tifani: I'm gonna pull a "well actually" and point out her name's "Dina", not "Dana", but yeah, I agree with you that it's not about the actual stuff on the phone.

Dan Rabin

And all the characters in _Peanuts_ are small children. Authors of fiction can choose among many different ways of using human aging in their stories, and they don't usually choose to impoverish the role of characterization in their stories to obey constraints that arise from outside the aims of their fictions.

Rob McBobson

She's an atheist now, so it's just "damn it", I think

Terra Bruder

W I L L I S. Love is a verb, and as shaken as they may be, they do that verb to each other many times every day. That love can not be undone, and the hurt in this moment can be repaired. Show us that. Show us what it looks like when two people who act with love do the work to be accountable and compassionate. When they do the work to repair. And then please defenestrate the president that is all

Dan Rabin

I perceive that Dina is, in fact, giving Becky space, having calculated that Becky is already showing self-awareness in her despair. Would this point of view fit with your take on Becky's crisis?

CleverCrumbish

They can also and frequently do (though not always, as you indicate) also make choices about the environment of those constraints in order to justify the kind of characterisation they want to write.Personally I think it's a very good idea if you're interested in writing a lot of characters who habitually make mature adult decisions in immature or inexperienced incorrect ways in order to drive narrative drama to set the story itself in an environment mostly composed of a real life demographic who are at minimum six years out from developing the kind of insight that would thwart that.

Siberian Rabbit

> all of which seems very cogent, reasonable and insightful Well I don't think that's true. I think almost none of them seem either cogent, reasonable, or insightful actually, I've been around for about a year and it's mostly people doing agenda-posting for their favorite ship.

Shane Wegner

Becky was a highly-placed political assistant, read the pulse of a district well enough to empower De Santo’s candidacy, and controlled de Santo to the point she was giving Robyn orders about when to go do her job and vote _and being obeyed by same_.

Giant Speck

Tomorrow's comic is going to be a cutaway to Robin holding the Drama Tag somehow. "The fuck is this?"

Shane Wegner

My initial take was “you know what Dina? Respect.”

William Lewis

Right about now I think everyone needs about a week of Steve eating cereal. Oh, wait, wrong comic. Damn it...

Sajuuk-Khar

Galasso sees it and his eyes widen in horror The next day the Pizza and Subs is a gutted ruin

MrShoggoth

I 'm just here to feel the empathic pain because I remember being this age and being just as stupid. I dig it, though, because it takes my mind off the absolute hell I'm putting the characters of my novel through.

Shane Wegner

Becky’s doing plenty on her own imo

Railway Series Book Club

some of y'all are fake sickos bc im having a ball with this rn (real analysis after i get back from work maybe idk)

Seth Aaron Hershman has they/she pronouns

it does seem like it is basically always on dina to coach becky through her trauma and neuroses. whereas, like. the comic just...doesn't give dina many of those, and on the rare occasions it does, it's not becky who makes a conscious attempt to help out this is not to demonize either character, just an observation that i think shades dina's reaction here interestingly

Seth Aaron Hershman has they/she pronouns

becky: you [dina] feel more strongly on things more strongly than most folks i know, they just got trouble seein' it (16-Jul-2020) comments section: clearly dina is being calm and levelheaded and not-mad enough that it's on her to react perfectly to becky's visible crashout

Uniquitous

Riley / Steve crossover!

Uniquitous

A paring, if you will.

Harold

@Rob McBobson: I think Aeryn actually meant to say "...DINA leaving her," not Becky. I think they just transposed the names, because the point they're making seems to be clearly about Dina.

Siberian Rabbit

if this comment section had their way the past 4 months worth of strips would have been replaced by such aggressively anodyne garbage it'd make that Boyfriends webtoon look like All quiet on the western front

Sajuuk-Khar

@Seth: as always you bring a very solid point to chew on. also we know Dina deals with both expectations of being a savant and expectations of being an infant basically all the time. well, fuck. colored by all that I can see much more the breaking point that Dina reached here and why choosing the kinder response might’ve been exhausting

Sajuuk-Khar

As part of the comments indicated here, my initial post was made deep in my emotions and empathy to Becky’s Situation, and I think I was so genuinely astonished at Dina’s doctrine because I usually have unfair expectations of perfection for her You are correct to point out that she is allowed to respond in a kinda fucked up way here, it’s better to read this as two hurt people rather than any one party doing “a crime” I gotta learn some new ways to cook crow, lol

meh

i don't like the outcome but i'm not sure this could have gone any other way. it's true to both characters and where they are right now. no need to hunt the willis for sport today. i do wonder if ruth has more appearances. would be good to see dina grab ruth on her way back to her own room. she's not becky's therapist and walking away in that moment was understandable. but theres been a lot of hinting at becky's mom unaliving herself. could see dina being aware of that and not leaving becky completely alone. also i'd like more ruth and that'd be an interesting scene.

Mark

And Becky has had even more trauma than most of these teenagers. Which is saying a lot.

Mark

@Uniquitous ouch

Noelle Eve Palmer

this is a surprise because, based on previous comic universe breakups, I was expecting Dina to blow up at her

Harold

@meh: You beat me to the exact suggestion that I was going to make! A few people have been making sardonic, half-joking references to the Ruth/Becky crackship that some too-clever-by-half commenter has named "Red Flag" (It's me. Hi. I'm the too-clever-by-half commenter, it's me), but Ruth actually *would* probably be the best person (the best person in this dorm, at least) to talk to Becky right now. Because Becky really *shouldn't* be alone.

Astariel

@Smoochie - Seems like a real long shot.

Kazo

this is like, 6pm

Harold

@Hibiscus Stitch: Not that particular one, though

Harold

What if this is a fake-out, and Dina is absent from the final panel because she's walked back *towards* Becky? (Highly unlikely, I know, but anything is possible.)

meh

@Harold i mean in story that would be a terrible ship but the other patreon doesn't need to be canon :)

Anatoly Bertolli

I belive this pair is officially called the red flag

Empress of Robots

Damn. Between Joyce and Joe and Dina and Becky, biology class is gonna be HELLA fucking awkward this week. Maaaaaaaaaybe they should switch lab partners.

Empress of Robots

I feel like this ends with Joyce, Joe, Becky, and Dina all failing bio and getting put on academic probation and when the Dean asks them about it all four of them are going to respond "It's because Joyce/I started being super-gay for Dorothy"

Empress of Robots

Someone should make T-shirts: "I failed bio because Joyce started fucking Dorothy and all I got was this lousy t-shirt"

Star Ringer

I'm not even sure Becky's talking to Dina at all. Like she's tuned Dina out already and now she's just grousing to herself. And not even about what she just said.

GundamBradley

For sure, it does, but it can still be very frustrating to watch. I wasn't trying to call it bad writing or anything, just it makes me feel for her and want her to get her shit together.

Harold

Professor Brock, walking into class on Tuesday and seeing/feeling the vibe: "What fresh hell is this? Oh, never mind, I don't care."

Avian

Yes, I made a fucky wucky 😅

Fart Captor

Look, just because we WANT the drama and sadness and are paying to support it, doesn't mean we're not gonna react like our own bestest friends are going through it 😤

Sajuuk-Khar

“Fuck it, you’re all blobs of flesh that’s convinced itself of the lie of sapience anyway. Who gives a shit.”

darklion

If there's one thing I don't want to be, it's a fake sicko

Sajuuk-Khar

there’s a whole night ahead to fuck up in! (Or in Dorothy and Joyce’s case a whole night ahead to FUCK, up in)

Harold

[Sarah knocks on Sal and Malaya's door. Sal opens it.] Sarah: "Hate to bother you, but I REALLY need to use your half-bath. You-Know-Who---" Sal: "Y' don't need to say nothin'. Pro tip - if y' have earplugs, y' might wanna put 'em in."

Harold

Off-topic: There is now a wonderful, exceptionally well-composed preview panel (for August 2026) on the DoA Tumblr: a close-up, in the dorm hallway, of two entwined fitbit-clad hands framing a befuddled-looking Mary

KittyKai

To be fair Sajuuk-Khar, the fact that you recognize this already makes you better than 90% of people in the comments section xP

Anna K

Well that's disappointing; I was hoping those two would be next year's traditional Valentine's day disaster.

Sajuuk-Khar

The summer of 2026 looks to be paying a lot of Bizzare Dorventure/Theocracy dividends Also, Becky is being terminally annoyed by Carla and Dina is wearing Amber’s? hoodie?

Sajuuk-Khar

Wait a minute. Waaaaait a minute. The preview panel for 10/23, which was obviously moved forward. It has Walky in bed doomscrolling. Is…Is that tonight’s midnight update? WILLIS IS ABOUT TO “END OF STORYLINE” US

Ilana Feldman

Nah, Willis said a couple weeks back that we've got 106 updates in this storyline. We still have 23 more.

Rob McBobson

@Ilana: I haven't felt as relieved as your comment made me since I found my "stolen" cell phone in my jacket pocket last year.

tifani

Oh my god thank you for telling me this. Only 3 weeks left!

Most of my grievances today aren't actually with the current strip. It's moreso how half the comment section decided to show their full assholes for the world to see today. I think there isn't much for me to say about Dina since she's naturally nebulous and hard to read but you can usually tell when she's angry, exasperated or shocked. The face she gives is neither. I'll refrain from casting judgement until i have proof that that "It is" isn't a "There's a problem so i'm going to solve it." that is being intentionally framed by the narrative (subversively) as a "Fuck you actually i'm leaving" because she has trouble with tone sometimes. It's a failure in communication i totally expect from Dina because she isn't perfect. Becky up until now has pretty much been a model girlfriend. She's done everything right but the exact moment she shows any sign of fault people are completely willing to throw her under the bus when she's at her lowest point.

@S-K Is there name for the Amber/Dina ship? Seems like we should get on that, now that you mention it

This was originally a tumblr post but I died three times writing it so here it’s in response to a post in the dumbing of age tumblr: I am going to argue that the series of comics in question foreshadows the eventual Dorothy/Joyce/Joe triad — not just Dorothy/Joyce. What appears to be a simple Paramour → Paramore pun is, in fact, deliberate structural foreshadowing. Dorothy’s line, “Now watch me send nudes to my paramour, I’m out of control,” followed by her later assertion that Joyce’s new favorite band is Paramore, encodes the narrative’s emotional evolution. Paramour means “lover,” but Paramore reads phonetically as para more — more love. The word itself predicts polyamory. In this moment, Dorothy converts erotic impulse into education, transforming “sending nudes” into “sharing music,” preserving the same charge under the guise of mentorship. That containment multiplies rather than suppresses desire: the singular paramour becomes the plural Paramore, mapping exactly onto the expanding geometry of Dorothy, Joyce, and Joe. The pun isn’t just a joke — it’s prophecy, a linguistic foreshadowing of more love. I think I gave myself a nosebleed figuring this out. Rest my case.

And I just doxxed my tumblr I guess: anatomicalhearteyes if you guys are curious or on there.

@5099: Amber is clever, and Dina is a girl, so... "Clever Girl"? (And you can also apply those traits to Dina and to Amber, respectively, so it works both ways.)

Harold

@Anatoly Bertolli: "Red Flag" is actually Becky and *Ruth*. Not sure what Becky and Carla would be called, but it would never work anyway, because Carla's asexuality would be an even worse fit than Dina's for Becky's "berserk-freestyle-Coke-machine" horntness.

ok im home from work now and i can expound my thoughts: as much as it hurts to lose a pairing thats been a pillar of the comic for like a decade? i'm of the opinion that this is not only a logical failstate for the relationship, but that its arguably more interesting to see the relationship end than it is to see their relationship survive this. like, i feel like most of Becky and Dina's post-timeskip moments have all kinda been some flavor of "Becky has An Anxiety, Dina reassures her" and it was kinda getting a bit old! i'm glad something new's happening between them and i'm excited to see where these two go now that they're not so married (ha) to each other!

Giving someone patience and respect is not the same thing as being obligated to sit silently while they disrespect you. Becky needs space to feel her big feelings, but Dina has feelings too and is at least as justified in seeking the same.

Dmitri0240

I'm not suggesting that Becky should suppress these feelings from Dina forever. But being emotionally honest with one's partner does not mean providing them a raw, unprocessed stream-of-consciousness at all times. Becky needs to take the time to understand her own feelings (ideally with a less entangled friend), and *then* share what she finds with Dina.

Smoochie

Don’t mind that weirdo art account who followed.

SmartAlec105

Yeah, I see it as Dina respecting herself as a contrast to the way Joe is desperately clinging on to hope.

Kyle

ow. i've changed my mind, i would like to get off of mr. willis's wild ride.

Maude Reads Things

Necessary but painful indeed. Hopefully they can follow up when they feel a little less immediately raw

The preview panels have been coming a bit late due to the additions to the story. The last one was about six days late, which would put the Walky in bed panel next Wednesday.

Sajuuk-Khar

I am glad to actually be wrong!!

READ MY BOOK AND I WON’T. Seriously I am posting it chapter by chapter on ao3 and a bitch needs feedback.

tifani

There’s only one chapter so far.

This is the only way I’m meeting my 400 page goal.

YO WHAT THE FUCK

Gale Tazzin

is it Becky's fault that she's traumatized and was unable to keep that to herself? no. but regardless, it is not Dina's responsibility to deal with that. you don't get to mourn a relationship that never was to someone you're currently dating

Gale Tazzin

this isn't Joyce's fault! she didn't want Becky's feelings! the problem is that Becky has never been able to let go of Joyce, even as something new and wonderful grew rapidly into that void. Becky is so scared of being abandoned again that it's becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy

Harold

You can check out any time you like. But you can NEVER LEAVE Welcome to the Hotel Dumbifornia

Kelly (they-them)

Really, Willis? While Joyce and Dorothy are having sex, Dina and Becky break up? REALLY WILLIS?? AT THE SAME TIME?!? I'm not actually mad. I just thought it would be funny to write the comment like that. For real though, this is so brutal. And it occurred to me that Dotty and Joyce are probably still fuckin while this happens. Which is even more brutal. (And a little funny, in a dark way)

Lia

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Alexandra Falk

It turns out I can. I can Becky, Noooooo harder.

Madison

I disagree. Becky said "I'm the problem". Not "The problem is in me," not "My feelings are the problem", she said "I opened my mouth and said how I feel and I'm the problem" and Dina agreed and uhh--- whack. It's whack. Becky isn't the problem? She's not a problem? She's hurt? Dina is agreeing that Becky is the problem for being hurt and reacting to that hurt. That's wrong.
