It started with a kiss and it ended with a fuck. They have not acted in a way that means this situation gets to end without consequences. And I am speaking entirely on the cheating. They have treated people in ways that are morally reprehensible and they have avoided the logical emotional fall out for as long as they possibly can. They are going to get called out on their shit and they fucking deserve it. Look, I’m sorry — I’m fully making my predictions based on story formula here, and speaking as someone who also writes. There’s a rhythm a coherent story has to follow to fit narrative logic: setup, escalation, consequence, synthesis. The setup was the long build-up to the kiss — all that emotional groundwork and boundary-testing. The escalation was the cheating itself. Now we’re entering the consequence phase, and it has to land there before synthesis — that’s just how narrative structure works. I’m not basing this on emotion or preference; I’m literally doing story math. And they’re not going to bring back Joe after all this time to not have him be a huge part of what happens next. He’s the narrative pressure point — the person whose reaction catalyzes the fallout. It’s not about who I like; it’s about how stories balance their equations. And I’m actually not sorry. I love logic in my story structure. It’s my jam.

I think it's a combination of three things: First, already being uncomfortable with the October 21st strip, which was generally agreed to be the most risque "lead-in to a slipshine" moment we've ever seen in the main comic. That strip put me on the fence about continuing to read, & I told myself "if it gets any more explicit, I'm out", making this strip a "straw that broke the camel's back" situation. Second, the point at which this one picks up: as far as I can recall, previous "post-Slipshine" comics have picked up in the afterglow (if I'm wrong about that, feel free to link me to any counterexamples I've forgotten). This one picks up *during* the action, with a close-up shot of Joyce & Dorothy's orgasm faces. Had this strip started at panel 2, I think I would've been fine with it. Third, the general arrow of time. When I started reading Willis' comics, I was still in university myself, a similar age to the characters portrayed here. But now I'm in my mid-30s, and the older I get, the less I want to look at teenagers fucking. To pull an analogy from an old Joyce storyline, the mice boys are no longer age-appropriate.

Not to judge you for your discomfort in fact just going to use this as something to elaborate on (but I respect your personal boundaries let’s be clear) but I think you HAVE to be able to respect that discovering your sexual identity is a huge part of the college experience. I think Willis is exploring a necessary story element and all these characters are 18 and over. It’s not child porn. (Not saying you called it that to be absolutely clear) but I think Willis’ porn has artistic merit and elevates what he’s doing. Also just want to point out my pet peeveof all these shows where the kids are this sexual but in high school. Why do we have so many stories whee the kids live like they’re IN College but the writers won’t them BE in college. It’s weird and feels like fetishizing youth and makes me think there’s this idea that giving the kids the agency college brings is less interesting for a majority of showrunnees somehow like they can’t make themselves write in those worlds where kids are in their first few years of real adulthood. I respect Willis for wanting to tell these stories in the environment they belong.

@Harold Maybe we should all pitch in for a HEPA filter for Joyce's room. Those work pretty well as white noise machines [1], in addition to their main function. [1] - Also, if you want DIY sound baffling, hanging up fabric on the walls works pretty well. Tapestries or moving blankets work great, but you can also get some pretty cheap rolls of carpet material from Home Depot for about $20/each. Linoleum rolls are about the same price. Layer the carpet on top of the linoleum and pin them to the walls and you can go from being able to identify the individual episodes of Law & Order your neighbor is watching to not always being able to tell if they're home at all... Y'know, as an example.
