Fred Baker

As long as it’s not the kind you put in coffee, I’m fine with it.

Empress of Robots

MY DIABETES! (seriously though INJECT THIS SWEET SHIT DIRECTLY INTO MY EYEBALL PLZ)

Grace Serenity

Well, I guess I need to call my dentist! I'm pretty sure all that sweet shit caused a dozen cavities!

Logibear

Smash cut to Sarah who has pulled out the last of her hair because these two have been saying shit like this ALL FUCKING NIGHT

5099 5618 v2.0

Mind you, it'd also be cute if they inspired each other towards constructive patterns. But this is only day 3, so yeah. Why not sleep in?

ArdieBea

Aaaaaarrrghhhh! Drowning in syrupy sweetness! This is how I want to die!!

William Lewis

Yeah, that period in a relationship is sticky sweet, but you captured it well.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Grqce Kieser I get the feeling there's a line for the dentist. In part because I'm also in it.

Logibear

I wonder if the Kitchen Surgeon knows a Kitchen Dentist too?

Fart Captor

Rest is in fact quite constructive

Empress of Robots

"I knew I was going to need this baseball bat the morning after Joyce first had sex, I just didn't imagine I'd be using it on Joyce." ~Sarah (probably)

Joe found crying face down in a gutter

5099 5618 v2.0

@Logibear Prolly. Enough of those guys are in motorcycle clubs for one to have gotten into trouble and bailed out by the mob.

Railway Series Book Club

NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR THE SACCHARINE SHIT. IT FUELS MY BEING LIKE NOTHING ELSE.

David M Willis

look how do you think i built like 5 extra months of buffer in a summer

David M Willis

anyway, sucks if you don't like saccharine shit, don't it

Mariah

Willis at Joyce and Dorothy haters "never forget your here forever"

Mariah

Joe is Kiteman at this point

Astariel

No no, this is wonderful! Please inject all the saccharine shit directly into my veins! Love that Joyce loves Dorothy enough to get up and run with her and that Dorothy realizes that lying in bed with your girlfriend is infinitely better than getting up early and running.

Harold

Having abandoned her workout routine, Dorothy is about to experience the "freshman fifteen." Only in her case, it's fifteen orgasms.

Railway Series Book Club

"waiter, waiter! my steak is too juicy, my lobster is too buttery!" -all the FOOLS turning up their noses at the premium theocracy meal placed before them

C

Love me some Saccharine Theocracy in the morning...or whenever I get up, usually late morning, lol.

The Lurker

And I’m guessing there will be a correspondent period for JoJoyce, sometime in the near future?

etherealDesign

I love them almost as much as they love each other

Shane Wegner

“Get nurtured, numbnutz!”

Logibear

Thats cruel. She only gets 15 overall? She better use them wisely

DramaQueen

Yes! This is what we need. Let the girls be happy and have joy, we all need more joy in this world.

DramaQueen

That girl needs a sandwich. It would be good for her to actually sit and eat some meals.

DramaQueen

They can open a newspaper.

DramaQueen

“Darn it, why did my noise cancelling headphones have to choose today to break!” Curse that weird boyfriend of hers anyway, what kind of superficial nonsense is keeping him from having her over again. Maybe he respects his roommates need for some peace, or he needs his beauty sleep but that’s not what he said. He could have joined Sarah in her room.

Tom @ Magic Chopstick Games

“No you get up ❤️” “No *you* get up 💜” “No *yoou* get up ❤️” “No *yooo—” “OH FOR FUCK’S SAKE GET UP”

DramaQueen

After the last couple of days they have had, yes. Dorothy needs to go to class more than jog anyway after all the sweating they’ve been doing in bed.

Logibear

Omigosh, imagine this but then it panning to Joe who is doing his absolute best to avoid smooshing both of them

Dan Rabin

OK, awwwwww like any decent commenter. Form-wise, this is a common scene-setting borderless panel followed by a sequence of identically-framed panels, supporting a superbly written dialogue setup and a great punch. Nice details: Joyce's hand starting on Dorothy's upper arm and moving up to her shoulder; Joyce's face moving in incrementally until we only see her nose on this side of Dorothy's cheek; Dorothy's eyes going toward Joyce when she's finally awake enough in panel 4; Joyce's smile changing from initiation of interaction in panel 2 through to the full nuzzle; Joyce *closing* her eyes as Dorothy opens hers. Joyce appears to have her wake-up alarm on her watch. Since their watch-wrists are so often adjacent, they should get Amber or A-G to write software to synchronize them into one fused state.

ArdieBea

He has a single room. Nothing's stopping him but the weird shit.

DiDi-chan

*murderous banshee shrieking*

ArdieBea

Reading your descriptions is like getting to read the strip again through fresh eyes - always a treat. Thank you.

ArdieBea

Also, I love that Dorothy's been sleeping with her hand tucked under Joyce's arm. Joyce anchors Dorothy. Once the dust (and the lust) settles, I'm really looking forward to seeing Dorothy unfold past her anxieties into some real activism.

Tessea

Oh wow, Dorothy with the smooth lines now! <3

Tessea

Oh, ouch!!!

5099 5618 v2.0

@Logibear Makes me think of the countdown in Spawn [1] used to track how much of his power he had left after each time he exerted himself. ___ [1] - It's okay if no one else remembers Spawn, especially the animated series. Some legit funny -in-hindsight, Garth Marenghi-esque, dark-age-of-comics era monologues by Todd MacFarlane, but otherwise it can be skipped.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Logibear Maybe the plan is not to have them get together until sophomore year, when at least one of them will be living off campus and might have a bed big enough for more than just Joe to sleep in without falling fully out of

5099 5618 v2.0

@DramaQueen ..."class"? Yes, I think I've heard the word... From the before-times...

Logibear

@5099 Hear me out... Joe is the Man Mattress upon which these two snuggle

Populuxe

Get in loser. We’re gonna cuddle.

Dan Rabin

My comments do in fact come from rereading the strip. After I get the main effect, I wonder how it was attained.

Smoochie

Relationship speedrunning into the inevitable couple who reads in bed arc

Terra Bruder

This is the best I've felt in a week

Grace Serenity

"It's Sarah from the stands with a steel chair!"

Jasmijn Wellner

inject the saccharine straight into my veins

Jesse

In the words of Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “Sentimental drivel-poop!”

joe mcguire

Man….i wish I felt better about this. There’s a version of this where I find this adorable, but it was done at so many other characters’ expense I’m not able to enjoy it.

Harold

@Logibear: Oh, no, no, no - you've misunderstood. Fifteen per *day*.

Joseph

obligatory “ew, love, gross”

Sajuuk-Khar

It absolutely was not done at anyone’s expense except Joe and Walky’s. Stop this.

Sajuuk-Khar

TOO LATE, HAROLD! The curse is cast! Fifteen orgasms shall you have in this relationship, Dorothy Keener! AND NO MORE!

tifani

I don’t trust this surface level saccharine one bit.

tifani

The strip mimics sweetness, but the emotional architecture beneath it shows something else entirely. And we have to keep in mind that everything we’ve seen has unfolded in roughly 48 hours — not weeks, not months, not even a full adjustment cycle. Two days of escalating pressure, dissonance, and impulsive decisions pretending to resolve themselves overnight. In that compressed timeframe, Joyce has confronted: – her first gay sexual experience – 18 years of internalized fundamentalist sexual conditioning snapping all at once – the abrupt implosion of her closeness with Becky – hurting Joe in a way she clearly didn’t intend – Sarah’s explicit disapproval – Dorothy’s enabling, then sudden withdrawal the moment outside judgment appeared – and the complete collapse of her previous moral scaffolding None of that can metabolize in 48 hours. There is no world where the psyche actually processes that upheaval this quickly. So when this strip presents warmth and domesticity — the soft light, the “you caught me,” the glow — it isn’t peace. It’s compensatory stabilization, Joyce clinging to the one narrative thread she can control: “If this relationship looks good, then everything I did was necessary.” Dorothy’s flatness highlights the imbalance. Joyce is dissociating with a smile; Dorothy is already grounding back in reality. Their energies don’t match because they’re not operating from the same psychological state. Joyce is still trying to outrun the past 48 hours. Dorothy is simply tired. Layer on top of that: – Joyce performing her new coupledom in front of Tony, somebody whose institutional weight she knows Dorothy cares about – Joyce insisting on acting unseemly despite knowing Sarah disapproves – Joyce doubling down on the “we’re fine” narrative even as the room’s social temperature shifts It’s not liberation. It’s not stability. It’s a coping mechanism trying to hold shape under rapidly encroaching reality. The strip looks sweet, but the emotional math is off. It reads like dissociation laid over the wreckage of two days Joyce has not even begun to process

tifani

Or maybe it’s all “fine”. Whatevs.

tifani

I really feel like you’re not supposed to feel good about these two right now. I think that’s why reading the comic lately has felt overall like such a weird experience. The subtext doesn’t match the text and then I come into the comments and see so many people going “awww so cute!” and I’m like “No.” I think if a couple requires ignoring ALL context of how they got together and EVERYTHING happening around them to enjoy them being together then the narrative itself is telling you something.

tifani

I have a thought which is hard to articulate basically I feel like we’re getting Joyce’s perspective on this relationship hijacking the entire narrative of the comic. Like because she’s the objective(not she’s objective I mean she’s objectively) the main character then her current coping mechanism of hyperfixation on this new relationship to cope is going to take over but it all feels off because it is off because she is not okay and the narrative itself is trying to get back control.

Empress of Robots

Jokes on them; the newspaper is just Joyce and Dorothy kissing.

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K (/Fingers on monkey's paw curls)

The other Alan

" It reads like dissociation laid over the wreckage of two days Joyce has not even begun to process" -Yep, that's what it feels like to fall hard for someone you never thought of in that way! ;-) The rest of the world no longer matters.

tifani

So I’m going to explain to you like you’re a child the difference between dissociation and infatuation. Infatuation narrows focus because you’re pulled inward by desire. Your attention contracts around the person because everything feels heightened. You’re still you in the driver’s seat — just running on excitement. Dissociation narrows focus because your nervous system is overwhelmed and starts stripping out anything it can’t process. It’s a protective detachment, not an emotional rush. You’re not drawn toward anything — you’re pulling away from everything. They can superficially look similar if you don’t understand trauma responses, but psychologically and narratively they are opposites. What’s happening with Joyce isn’t the world falling away because she’s in love. It’s the world falling away because she’s actively avoiding the wreckage of the last 48 hours. The surface sweetness is the mask; the avoidance is the story. If someone has to ignore every surrounding event to call this ‘cute,’ that doesn’t validate the romance — it confirms the coping mechanism I’m pointing at. Have I made how much thought I put into that original post clear, or do you want to be glib at me again?

Empress of Robots

I think the thing I’ve liked most about the last few storylines and DoA as a whole is watching these two grow into each other. They’ve changed each other a great deal and (to me at least) that’s sort of what love is—two people sharing the best parts of themselves with each other while letting the other help them change and move on from from the worst parts of themselves. Like I know there is tons of fallback coming their way and they are in no way “their perfect selves” or a perfect couple (yet). But I’m looking forward to how they will weather whatever life throws at them next (individually or together) as a couple of idiots in love with each other.

Harold

@Empress of Robots: New IDS comic: Joyce and Dorothy from the front-page picture photoshopped into a different historical event every day

Ilana Feldman

I vibe with this assessment specifically from joyce's point of view, but I will note that Dorothy looks pretty content/happy in the last panel. I wouldn't call that "flat".

Jayne Lindgren

You don't understand, Sajuuk-Khar, women are responsible for absolutely everyone around them. They aren't allowed to put themselves or their own happiness first, ever. Especially if they're queer. They need to continue conforming to the emotional needs of others, especially the men in their lives. Forever.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Steve Horton Quite the ab workout, if nothing else. Likely equivalent to very intense yoga.

~Explorin' like Dora / these Swipers can't swipe me...~

tifani

I should elaborate: I find her delivery flat in comparison to what Joyce is radiating right now. Flat might have been the wrong word choice. And she has just woken up. But I think she’s at a normal level of happiness and Joyce is kind of overdoing it.

Harold

@tifani: "...she's at a normal level of happiness and Joyce is kind of overdoing it." Have you MET Joyce? For her, this is Monday.

ArdieBea

@Harold Doooooooo iiiiiiiiiiitttttt!!

Maude Reads Things

Yeah, it'd add a lot of weight if you were running with Joyce hanging off of you like that. XD

tifani

@harold I’m going to try to articulate what I’m reading as normal Joyce happiness vs what I’m seeing here. I think what it comes down to is we know Joyce cares DEEPLY about the happiness of other people around her not just her own. The fact that she knows multiple people in her orbit (Becky. Joe.) are in emotional pain plus her fear of hell which she very recently established is still very much there and she’s still playing up being this happy is just not in alignment with everything that’s going on in the background right now or in her head. So it feels like an imitation of the authentic thing. She should NOT be acting like this, she just shouldn’t. Not to this degree. It’s like she’s doing an impression of herself. Or living out a rom com script. And I keep thinking it’s because she’s decided this relationship HAS to be worth the cost.

Astariel

Beautifully put.

Dmitri0240

I don't know precisely what percentage of new relationships involve at least one person getting their feelings hurt to some degree, but it's not a small number. Maybe not a majority, but darn close. Empathy is good, but empathy needs to work both ways. Too often in online spaces, "empathy" means only that we feel bad for those who lost something, but never that we feel joy for those who have found something.

Logibear

@Sajuuk-Khar They won't last until Tuesday. Doesn't matter what day it currently is
