Dorothy should ABSOLUTELY buy Joyce lingerie!

C

...I think Joyce is hinting she'd be down for the lingerie shopping trip Dorothy. That said, a good jacket is important at this time of year. Practical first, then fun.

William Lewis

Ah, wearing just a leather jacket can be a delicious delight that is more fun than most negligees.... 😉

Shane Wegner

Lingerie? Corruption after corruption!

Kelly (they-them)

Dorothy, half the appeal of the leather jacket to Joyce is that fact that it's Sal's

Ragtime

So we're "pimping your ride"?

Empress of Robots

This relationship is like less than a weekend old and we're already entering the LEATHER phase lol

Railway Series Book Club

very excited for the inevitable tumblr post from ardiebea noting all of dorothy's "suggestions for upgrades to [joyce's] visual presentation"

ArdieBea

I see Dorothy learned a little something from the pajama jeans fiasco. And we're learning something new about her, too, aren't we? Or are we? Wait... if i re-read am i going to suddenly see all her admiring glances at leathered Joyce?

ArdieBea

It's in the queue.

Logibear

Sal stirs in her slumber, not knowing why she mutters "fucking gayyy" and goes back to sleep.

Empress of Robots

THIS. My first thought after reading the strip was the Road to El Dorado "Both? Both. BOTH!" gif

anyway dorothy being into leathery joyce is awesome. i hope dorothy gets to leather up too someday...

ArdieBea

Chamois leather thong...

The cuter and hornier these two act, the more I worry we're being softened up for an emotional killing blow when we check back in on Becky What horrors do you have lying in wait??

Harold

"My God... that... that HAIRCUT"

Logibear

Is it weird to invite your ex's identical twin sister into the polycule?

Harold

@Ragtime: I see what you did there

KittyKai

... Why not both? :3

Harold

@Logibear: "...your ex's identical twin sister, who's currently dating your other ex, who's best friends with your new girlfriend's boyfriend?"

I wouldn't mind them circling back around to the lingerie idea, too, but leather jacket is a good start.

C

You mean the Becky haircut that looks just slightly too close to Dorothy's haircut to be anywhere near a healthy response?

Astariel

Joyce is so cute in panel 3 when she thinks Dorothy is going to buy her lingerie, I'm actually a little disappointed that she's wrong. It's interesting that Becky wasn't the only one to find Joyce in a leather jacket sexy. It reminds me of the time Dorothy was dressing Walky up and compared it to basting a turkey. Presumably this is going to be where Joyce's leather jacket from the previews appears.

Zesstra

"I'm buying you a strap-on." "Now that I know what that is, sure."

5099 5618 v2.0

@Zesstra Assumed to be inevitable, yes.

Sajuuk-Khar

You know, Dorothy, technically you can buy her leather items in the same vein as lingerie i.e. a corset, thigh-high boots, a riding crop, an authoritative tone, just spitballing here

Sajuuk-Khar

“Size six.” “Joyce, they aren’t sized like dresses—“ “I know that. I’m saying, size six.”

Tessea

Soon the official Julia Gray cosplay will be complete!

Maybeeus

Dorothy's line about "upgrading visual presentations" made me think about Joyce becoming Augmented. It all starts out with a badass leather jacket... Next thing you know you've become more machine than woman... Still trying to figure out if Joyce giving herself rocket arms is OOC or not.

Smoochie

Or. Or. The lingerie AND the jacket.

wgat if joyce wearing lacy lingerie under ripped jeans and a leather jacket and then dorothy wearing a bdsm leather harness under a chic cocktail dress. has anyone considered this

tifani

So Dorothy is dictating how she dresses now? To each their own but this would be a turn off for me. Seriously not trying to be judgmental here but she’s basically just asking Joyce to cosplay as Sal. It’s weird.

tifani

Or idk maybe this would be less weird for me if Dorothy had just bought the jacket and presented it as a gift rather than the way she’s putting it out here right now. Like why does it matter if she borrows Sal’s? She LIKES borrowing Sal’s.

tifani

And yeah ok I get it I probably shouldn’t be criticizing the self confessed control freak for hints of being a control freak. Also some people are into being molded and moved around like a puppet.

Rob McBobson

But... If Joyce already wears leather jackets, then I'm not sure it counts as "control" to buy her the kind of jackets that she decided, on her own, to wear, so that she can wear them whenever she likes.

Rob McBobson

Also, I feel that if anything, Dorothy's actually asking Joyce to stop cosplaying as Sal, since the idea is for Joyce not to wear Sal's clothes anymore. The only possible change is for Joyce to become less like Sal, since she won't be wearing Sal's leather jackets in particular.

tifani

Okay how do I put this: every time Joyce borrows Sal’s leather jacket part of the appeal for her is that it’s Sal’s leather jacket. Sal represents something important to her. Dorothy clearly appreciates the look but the second she’s in a position to say something about it she says “let’s get you your own so you DON’T HAVE TO BORROW SAL’S ANYMORE” I just think Dorothy could have very easily gotten Joyce a leather jacket without bringing Sal into it at all. Instead she’s saying let me dress you more in a way I prefer but remove the element where you have to borrow something from this other woman who you clearly have a very specific dynamic with. I’m saying this reads as Dorothy creating distance because she sees Sal as a threat. Just like she was quick to create distance when she decided Joe was a threat. And doing it in a way that creates plausible deniability if pointed out.

Rob McBobson

I guess she could have refrained from mentioning Sal, true, but I also think that her phrasing is pretty normal. It's at least possible, IMO, that she's simply saying "Let's get you your own so things will be easier for you."

tifani

I would be more willing to give her the benefit of the doubt if she wasn’t an established control freak and if the pajama jeans thing also hadn’t established that dictating how her partner’s dress is something she likes to do. There was also absolutely no reason to bring up Sal so I can’t help but hyperfocus on the “so you don’t have to borrow Sal’s” part of it. If she had taken Joyce to a consignment shop and they’d happened upon a leather jacket and Dorothy had bought it as a gift that would be different. Her going about it this way feels manipulative. And it is in her nature to manipulate. Remember her politician side.

tifani

But going back to what you said about it being at least “possible” yeah I agree. Plausible deniability is a huge part of this. She’s image conscious. She’s practiced. It was why she was so sure she could fool Hank with enough time. She knows the right way to ask things or to present things so as to appear innocent. It’s only when you pick the statements apart that you see the glaring red flags. But this girl wanted to be president. She always gonna have an agenda be it for good or for bad. And here it might be as simple as: Joyce likes leather jackets. I like Joyce in leather jackets. Let’s get Joyce a jacket but also win win she doesn’t have to borrow Sal’s anymore which feels like a threat but not one I want to elaborate on.

tifani

I just keep coming back to Dorothy is way more interesting when people stop taking everything she says and does on a surface level. She wants to be a good person. She’s not a monster. But she can be selfish and manipulative and in the deleted comic we saw her say she has used Joyce’s attraction to her to her advantage. This would be one of those times even if it’s an overall benign manipulation.

Rob McBobson

I gotta disagree that there was no reason to mention Sal, though. That's just how people talk to each other a lot of the time, in real life. They give unnecessary detail. It's like how they might say "We've gotta leave, or the plane will leave without us," even though the last part is well-known to the listener. Or "Can I borrow the copier? I gotta make some copies," even though it's obvious that making copies is what the speaker's gonna borrow the copier to do. I'll be honest and say that I don't remember what the pajama dress thing was (though right now I'm browsing the archives to find it), but since Dorothy already knows that Joyce likes leather jackets, that doesn't mean it's controlling for Dorothy to go out of her way to buy one. It doesn't have to be more than buying her girlfriend something she knows her girlfriend likes. Buying somebody a Mars bar doesn't count as controlling their eating habits if you already know they like Mars bars. Or to put it differently--if Dorothy's purpose is to make sure Joyce doesn't meet Sal as much, then I don't see why that couldn't also be the case if, on an impulse, Dorothy buys a leather jacket that she sees in a store.

tifani

I think you’re giving real world grace to fictional characters. In a natural real world conversation filler gets to just exist and “that’s just how people talk” works as an explanation. But this is a story. There’s a script. If Willis includes the line “So you don’t have to borrow Sal’s” then we’re being invited to investigate what that line could possibly mean. What are the implications for the character? I chose to investigate further and when I did I remembered past behaviors that said red flag. The most glaring example being the pajama jeans thing. That happened way back in the beginning of the comic. It was the impetus for the first Dorothy/Walky break up.

tifani

And seeing Sal less could still be the case even if the jacket is bought on impulse but the situation changes by being made on impulse. Same goal, same desire, less planning. And honestly a better cover because doing it on impulse would take even more soul searching to figure out why. Doing it out in the open and having her state her potential motivations out loud like this feels like Willis is shining a light on the behavior. But also ask yourself why even include this whole exchange? Why not just have Joyce show up one day with a leather jacket unless Willis wants us examining everything about this moment? What it says about Dorothy. What it says about Joyce. What it says about Dorothy’s thoughts on Sal and Joyce. What it says about Dorothy in the context of her past relationships.

Astariel

It's adorable, just like she is.

Astariel

Except Sal, ironically.

@S-K Mrs. 5099 also recommends a pair of solid steel bracelets. You can get a pair that look rather covert, but have removable screws in the top for the part that holds them together. That part also looks nice on a necklace, and the whole setup works pretty well with more involved things.

Walky, waking up from a dream: PORK CHOP SANDWICHES?!?!

tifani

I can’t think of a character who I could see dying sooner if you put them on a motorcycle than Joyce. Forget even turning it on. She’d sit on it making vroom vroom noises until it fell over and she cracked her skull open. Or it just falls on top of her and Joyce goes “I like to be smooshed but not like this! NOT LIKE THIS!”

Maude Reads Things

I mean, yes, you still could have bought her a jacket as her friend. Noticing your friend likes a certain style and doesn't own anything of that style and just borrows it from other people is a perfectly good reason to buy them a gift. That said....yeah Sal's style brings EVERYONE into girls to the yard so Dorothy being into it does not even remotely surprise me.

Maude Reads Things

I really like digging into Dorothy's motivations. Sure, it could be an innocent bit of conversation filler. Realistic writing will mimic how people talk. Stories will also often lace character hints in those conversations and Willis likes doing that a LOT. Dorothy's history with dressing Walky and the pyjama jeans thing does establish Dorothy can be a bit controlling on what her partner wears. This might become a Thing. I'd also like to point out something about Joyce's motivations here - Joyce has shopping money. She has not hesitated in the past to buy herself tons of Monkey Master merch when she first got into it. Her reaction to seeing Jennifer in a hockey jersey was to IMMEDIATELY order her a dress for the team because she assumed it was her favourite. Joyce LOVES shopping. And yet, she has not bought herself a leather jacket. That tells me she ENJOYS getting them from Sal's closet and that a big part of this is that she's enjoying that they're from SAL specifically. Some stupid not Sal's leather jacket just wouldn't be the same for Joyce. I think that makes sense. A lot of Joyce's friends take on a 'big sister' type role for her - even Dorothy did once upon a time before they realized their feelings were very different. Those relationships are very important to Joyce and I think that's why she'd rather get the jackets from Sal.

tifani

Exactly and there’s also the timing. Bringing it up the day after she and Joyce fuck for the first time and when she is now one half of the relationship Joyce is building her new identity around after blowing up the last one: Joyce at her most malleable. Joyce herself pointed out that she could have always said something about liking her in leather jackets back when they “both thought they were straight” aka when Joyce was likelier to give pushback. Look at the birth control pills situation. They’re not even a little bit settled into this new thing and Dorothy is already getting to work reshaping Joyce more in her image. And you can’t tell me Joyce isn’t as particular about her fashion choices as she is about everything else. If she’d wanted her own leather jacket she’d have one. But now wearing one and no longer asking Sal becomes about making Dorothy happy.

Sajuuk-Khar

Booster, after Walky has freaked out about an inferno, get the fuck out of there, etc., and woken them up from also a nap: Detecti—there’s no—-going…you tell me do things…I done…runnin’…😫

Maude Reads Things

"If she’d wanted her own leather jacket she’d have one." That part! Yes. Like I said, Joyce loves shopping for herself AND her friends. Unlike Sarah, she doesn't really worry about limited spending money. Clearly the means of buying a leather jacket is not the issue for why Joyce doesn't own one. The appeal of the jacket is the bonding with Sal. I didn't think of it this way but I think you may be right that Dorothy is (consciously or unconsciously) perceiving that as threatening and so trying to 'stake her claim' as it were.

Empress of Robots

I am beginning to think that Dorothy wants to get Joyce her own leather jacket so she can have sex with Joyce while she's wearing it without crossing a permanent boundary with Sal. "Dorothy why are you dating a woman now." "I once dated a guy who wore pajama jeans while my best friend wore her suitemate's leather jacket and I began questioning every single one of my life decisions up to that moment. On a related note, do you know where I can get my new girlfriend her own leather jacket so she doesn't have to borrow her suitemate's anymore for non-sex related reasons?"
