MrShoggoth

“The moral of this story is, you can’t trust the SYSTEM, maaaaan!”

Empress of Robots

Spoiler alert for Joyce: everything is bad all the way down.

Minzoku Bokumetsu

I HATE HOW MOST OF MY PROBLEMS ARE ABSTRACT OR SYSTEMIC. I WANT TO FIGHT THEM WITH A SWORD.

ArdieBea

Activist Dorothy! Whooo hooooo! Here we go!

Joe Crow - Words & Pictures

So, PolySci with a minor in Anarchist Studies? I approve! (Course, I dunno if she can get that past her academic advisor)

AE Gonzalez

Best way to dismantle anything is from the inside.

C

Turns out, multiple different competing structural systems can suck. So, do as Jesus would do, and chase the corruption out personally.

Kazo

Everything's bad, Joyce. Let's go get you some fruit.

Logibear

Yay, exposition strip! Kidding, good to get to know Dorothy's inner thoughts tbh. I mentioned a while back that I was not a big fan of her character but I'm liking this whole vibe that she's kinda torn down everything that she thought she believed and is working her way up from a blank slate.

MrShoggoth

You can’t buy me, hot-dog-man!

Crunchos cereal

I kind of feel this is one of those strange cultural things whcih differ between times and places. I was a student decades ago, in a different country, so this ’buy clothing for a new partner at this age when we’re students’ feels quite strange. At that age, I was in a new-ish relationship and got them gifts, of course, but buying a leather jacket would have been pretty expensive and a big gift!

Astariel

So yes, the church is bad and the system is bad, but at least you've still got gay sex with your girlfriend, and that's very, very good.

Andrea Andrew

Looks like Dorothy is finally getting back on track from her spiral. Guess getting a girlfriend finally made her realize what’s important.

William Lewis

Study some stoic philosophy. It'll help, Dorothy.

Logibear

Also, obligatory favorite relevant Futurama line "You can't just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!"

William Lewis

"History of Politics" and you can get away with anything.

C.T. Phipps

The system is bad, Joyce. However, your church's solution would probably be to elect the Worst Person EverTM to "fix" it.

C.T. Phipps

Poor Joyce will find out there IS a collection of pedophiles run by billionaires.

DramaQueen

Also, shops with fancy leather jackets don’t usually open until after ten am and usually involve a hours trip in a car to a different city. So I too am somewhat confused. But maybe I just live in too small a city that has never had a place to clothes shop that wasn’t Target or a thrift store.

Astariel

Just have to make sure you don't bring it down on your head.

Astariel

From my American perspective, it does seem like a pretty big gift, but it depends on how well-off Dorothy's family is. If they're upper middle class or better, I could see her not thinking it's a big thing.

ArdieBea

@AE She's not saying she's going to do it from the inside, just that she can use knowledge of the systems to destroy them. She knows she needs to know her enemy.

Shane Wegner

Bold of her church to assume it’s not a tax-relief’ed part of the system.

Shane Wegner

Does Ruttech still make swords? If so they can sell you one.

William Lewis

I thought the moral of the story was that "Next time you place your order, don't for get to say "No Anchovies, Please"?

Sajuuk-Khar

Joyce, later, destroying her own smartphone: You think I’m stupid?! This ain’t my dad! This is a CELL PHONE!!

Sajuuk-Khar

Don’t worry, Joyce! It can be: two things!!

Harold

@William Lewis: Now THAT's a deep-cut reference! The J. Geils Band with a little too much studio time on their hands, circa 1980. "Oh, my God - that bowling ball! It's my WIFE!"

@Kelly (they-them) I once had friends get me a very nice ice cream cake for a bday party, then drop it face down right as they were bringing it out for people to eat. Another friend in the group said that word-for-word, a single beat after it happened. Delightful moment. Shame about the cake, tho.

@Mr Shoggoth ~At the farmers market with my so-called girlfriend~ - Dorothy, shortly before that one preview panel of her and Joyce I keep seeing, probably

HenryVolt

Specific conservative church folk will say the system is bad when it's not 100% always working in their favor. They prefer to be the ones running it even though the constitution and the Bible itself says the separation of church and state is vital but it's not like they actually listen to those things.

Tessea

it's almost like there's an issue with people in any sort of authority needing to keep and profit from that authority than use it for the good of everyone.

Ouri Maler

Sorry Dorothy, but... unless you're, like, MLK, no lifetime of activism will let you make as much difference as being an actively idealistic member of Congress (much less President, but that's way more of a longshot).

William Lewis

Cold Steel Knife and Tool would be happy to help you with your desire... 😉 Their English Backsword is quite excellent, I will add.

Empress of Robots

Okay, I also love that when Dorothy said "Hey can I get you a leather jacket because you plus leather makes me hornt," Dorothy meant "LET'S GO NOW"

Seth Aaron Hershman has they/she pronouns

every other time in history the united states government made a change, it was out of the goodness of their hearts, and not because of political pressure from citizens, except for the one time a citizen got really famous

joe mcguire

It turns out: lots of things are bad!

Jasmijn Wellner

i think you might have a better handle on why the system is bad now than you did when you still believed your church, joyce

Johanne

Yuppppp like, it is incredible to watch any documentary about legislation, like about how the ADA or the EPA happened, etc, and turns out, without fail, the reason is always years upon years of badass activists occuppying, mobilizing, and making it impossible for legislators to avoid them.

Rob McBobson

That's what I can't stand about the world: Almost every nutcase out there has some sort of basic, sensible point that makes me go "Okay, that's true, but not the way you're making it sound." The only ones who are *genuinely* wrong in *every* way I can think of, are the ones who advocate for the entirely wrong kind of "love" between adults and kids, and also Nazis. Everybody else at least has some sort of semi-sensible point mixed in with their nutcase ideology, at least if I look at it without wearing glasses, so to speak. (This post should NOT be taken as actual endorsement of immoral political movements, of course.)

Ouri Maler

Hell, even with MLK, a lot of why the Civil Rights Act passed was because of realpolitik (segregation was not exactly endearing the USA to the Third World, which was giving the USSR a diplomatic advantage at the time).

Harold

@Kelly (they-them): Someone on Tumblr once posted a GIF of the "Happy Birthday to the GROUND!" moment on Earth Day, and it caught on and became a thing

Rob McBobson

It's also what I get when I push "Enter" accidentally ^^;

Empress of Robots

A fundamentalist church?! Oblivious to its own hypocrisy?! In my country?!?! That's unbelievable!

Empress of Robots

We gays only buy our swords handcrafted by small armorers to be as close to their Late Middle Ages and Renaissance historical examples as possible usually provided by armorers based in the Pacific Northwest, Eastern Europe, Italy, and Northeast Washington, DC.

Maude Reads Things

Okay but at the end of the day, you are going to need some measure of power to achieve the kinds of changes you want and the kind of power to make those changes lies within the political system. That doesn't mean the system isn't shit but it does mean there are only so many ways to make it LESS shit.
