FAKE GAY GAKE FAY ...I mean, idk if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, prob gay

5099 5618 v2.0

Ah, yes. This phase. It passes. You'll be fine.

Kazo

ok but thats too relatable

EnterTheHero

Sweetie, don't sweat it and just enjoy the cuddles.

Andrea Andrew

Oh no. No, Joyce. Your gayness is real, and you being fine with it doesn’t make it fake.

William Lewis

Honey, there are so many kinds of queer, trust me. You are simply your kind of queer. As a bi cis guy, I've seen lots of cray-cray. It's nothing to worry about 😊

Logibear

Would be funny if Lucy was just off panel. "Please stop dumping your character development on me!"

MrShoggoth

Hey, my great uncle was gay, and he was not at all ashamed or sad about it - well, okay, he was sad that he and Peter Allen broke up, but that was so Peter could chase his dreams outside of Australia and wasn’t an inherent part of who he was.

LupinThe8th

"If only there was a word for this."

C.T. Phipps

I am glad to see that Joyce has internalized that bi-dom isn't real by way of Jennifer. She will only understand it if she reads some cartoon porn....that she made.

C

Joyce, this isn't cheating, you're LGBT regardless of your crush on Dorothy or not (though admittedly, I would like to see who else Joyce might find attractive now that she's aware of this aspect of herself). ...Cheating on Joe was cheating. Speaking of, when Dorothy gets back, there's probably a conversation worth having.

AE Gonzalez

Meanwhile, Dorothy figuring out her Kinsey score.

Logibear

There are only three sexuality's. Gay, Straight and Keenersexual.

Logibear

I feel like her little external monologue here is going to have a punchline of her offhandedly mentioning Joe and then immediately going "SHIT JOE!" followed by flailing arms and running

AE Gonzalez

She says as she is clearly sad and tortured.

Astariel

Boy, is that relatable. You don't have to be depressed or tortured to be valid, Joyce!

Railway Series Book Club

i instinctively wanna say "becky's not THAT tortured by her gayness" but i guess joyce could just be wrapping up becky's general torturedness with torturedness specifically related to gayness joyce it's fine to be happy with being gay (colloquial), you dont gotta stress about not being stressed about it

Dan Rabin

The strip starts with a borderless panel in scene-setting position: Joyce is still affected by the parting from Dorothy. Then she turns her head halfway towards us as she spends three panels trying to work out her relationship to her new relationship with three priceless Joyce-expressions, and she turns fully towards us as *in one sentence* she manages to tell us both that she feels great about the relationship and that she feels bad about the feeling great. This may be an abstract holdover from her upbringing, in that she's worried about conforming to some external set of rules.

VengeanceKnight

Someone please explain to her how bisexuality works.

Michael Flannagan

Isn't she also attracted to Sal? Or is that more of a hero worship thing?

5099 5618 v2.0

@Steve Horton She's in the business of misery.

C

I mean, she almost assuredly IS attracted to Sal...but we haven't really seen Joyce interact with Sal since she realized she liked women. At least, not that I can remember.

Waifu Purplebutt

Does... Does Joyce not know about being bi???

Fart Captor

Joyce you're attracted to plenty of other girls, just not enough to admit it to yourself you dumb gay 😤

GundamBradley

It's consistently been a topic much of the cast does not understand well, though Joyce more than most, like when she got very weird about Ruth being with Jason.

C

Oh right, but Joyce was absolutely focused on a lot of conflicting emotions at the time. It'd probably be different now that things have calmed down.

ArdieBea

Interestingly reflective Joyce. With this train of thought it's a little less likely that she's going to go fundamentalist Gay like she went fundamentalist atheist, so that's a relief. But, yeah, she needs to A. Chat with Leslie about bisexuality, B. Pause and reflect on her feelings for Billie, Sal, Sarah, and even Alice (all of whom she's found attractive) and C. Realize that she's now reached Dina levels of perfection, because she's so Gay and Autistic.

Alison Berry

Did you steal this from my 2013 tumblr post where I came out as bi lol

Grace Serenity

I think the torturedness she’s describing is more the propaganda that the church uses to decry homosexuality

Smoochie

Damn. Relatable. Impostor syndrome for your orientation. Impostor syndrome for your ethnicity. Impostor syndrome for being a Transformers fan (OKAY MAYBE NOT AS DEEP BUT I WASNT THERE FOR G1 OKAY!)

Ragtime

Leslie tried..

Tessea

It's not just Dorothy. There's also Jennifer's chest. I guess the idea of being Bi hasn't processed through her old filters yet.

Smoochie

So no Bi-Keenerous?

Logibear

Sadly it's not on the list.

Shane Wegner

Joyce’s attraction to Dorothy started as fangirling, and she fangirls for Sal too (a large reason she’s even wearing that leather jacket?) Sal really does seem to have a low Kinsey though. Joyce likes Dorothy and big muscle guys like Joe and Jacob? A perfectly valid palette of likes.

ArdieBea

Add Ethan to that list of big guys. There was genuine attraction there.

ArdieBea

Sorry, Fart, you got your post up while I was painstakingly correcting my phone's autocorrect and mine ends up being a bit redundant.

ArdieBea

Yeah, the internalised bullshit that still, as Dina reports, leads to shame-crying following great sex. And that same bullshit is responsible for warping her father to the point that he became an actual villain. So, not 'being gay' as such, but the being gay in this culture? Yeah.

Shane Wegner

Ohhh yeah, good call. It was “safe” in its own way with Ethan, but I see you’re right about the genuine attraction under the surface.

William Lewis

Transformers Animated was the bestest version of them all!

Zesstra

Ok, Joyce, can you at some point please look through your notes for Gender Studies 101 and this time _actually process it_ instead of learning it by rote for the test.

C

I started with Beast Wars myself, but hey, I'm going back through the Marvel Comics (US and UK), that has to count for something.

KittyKai

I love how Joyce has these reflections only AFTER Dorthy has left the room, because when Dorthy is IN the room, the only thing that takes up any space in her brain is shoving her head in those bahonkadangeroos x3

Empress of Robots

To be fair to Joyce (and all the gay rizz she just lost in this strip), this is exactly how it went for Dorothy ("Well, I'm not really gay, I'm just attracted to Joyce!") until Dorothy fell ass-backwards into gay panic for A-G lifting weights and Dorothy realized maaaaaaybe she might be a 4 (or more).

The Deliberate Myth

Good chance we get some clarity on this soon, as Joyce needs to find Sal and invite her bowling with Asma.

The Deliberate Myth

Wait, what? Are ducks known to be the gayest of waterfowl? And what kind of duck?

Packy Anderson

I almost feel like she's breaking the fourth wall.

Packy Anderson

Whoa! Your great uncle dated Peter Allen! That's cool!

tifani

Yep! Exactly! She’s not going to realize she’s bi until Joe pops back into her vision but someone’s going to have to tell her because apparently she learned the word polycule but never learned the word bisexual (I consider pan to be the exact same thing before someone jumps in to say or pan!) So like I have been thinking for what feels like years we finally get to see Joyce wrestle with the fact that she’s attracted to both men and women but in particular one very specific woman (Dorothy) and one very specific man (Joe) and she does in fact want them BOTH and she did NOT in fact unambiguously dump him (despite other people wishing for that for the sake of neatness). Dorothy is going to come out of this 50 minute lecture and Joyce is going to have gone through a pretty big mental journey. Now how Joyce herself will react to this remains to be seen but the amount of self investigation she is doing in the SECONDS since Dorothy left her immediate space is delighting me. She has been in hard DON’T THINK ABOUT IT mode for two days now and she can’t avoid it anymore!

crufl

funky bookending is my favorite sister strip to Crankshaft

tifani

Okay I was originally posting this as a reply but it got too long so someone reminded me of the comic where Joyce finds out Ruth and Jason are dating and that was actually great insight into Joyce’s current mindset. Joyce DOES know bisexuality exists BUT her reaction to a bi woman (Ruth) dating a man (Jason) after being with a woman was to immediately look at being with a man as a regression/shame based heteronormativity. Now we go back to her declaration of kissing Dorothy being “heroically gay” but she also has this idea that being “true gay” has to come with shame and torture (?) (again fundie brainwashing leaking through). ANYWAY: Joyce is a whole ass mess. She equates giving into desire with bravery but also feels like bravery must be met with suffering? Doing the thing that feels good has to lead to punishment (we’re back to her whole no longer being a virgin = instant hell) Also being attracted to two people aka both men and woman is possible but you can’t date two people at the same time or you’re a hussy so you have to choose and you have to choose the gay option because you’re going to hell anyway so you might as well do the “heroically gay” thing? Or something? Am I understanding her current point of view?

tifani

Anyway love that she thinks she feels “actually pretty fine” with all this in her head. Let’s see how long this lasts.

Harold

Dumbing of Age, Book 17: "But Who Wouldn't Be Gay for Dorothy Anyway?"

Andrea Andrew

Do you think she’s lying? She really doesn’t seem to have gone through Ethan and Becky’s struggles with coming out of the closet.

tifani

I think she’s lying to herself yeah. I think she’s been lying to herself for hours. I don’t think she’s doing it intentionally. I think it’s a part of her process. But if she thinks she’s not currently struggling I think a lot of denial is going into that.

tifani

Maybe the gay label feels false because she’s bi? Being fully serious here. I know some people are comfortable using gay as a catch all term but some aren’t and Joyce didn’t so much choose it for herself as decided to start after Becky called her that. She calls herself “gay” and it doesn’t feel accurate to her actual desires. I say this as a bi person who feels kind of awkward calling myself gay for that exact reason even if I’m technically allowed.

Lea

Please don't let Joyce near Billifer during this stage in her processing!

Maybeeus

You know, out of all the people i want to see Joyce talk to about this i think the interaction i want to see the most is her and Ethan. Back when she first wore one of Sal's jackets she had a discussion with him about a few things and i would love to see a callback to that eventually.

tifani

Said it already in another comment but considering this conversation happened like two weeks ago for her I don’t think she’s dropped any of this thinking. She seems to know bisexuality is a label but doesn’t fully believe in it even if it does apply to her. So she might really be thinking loving Dorothy means she’s gay now and not in the colloquial sense. I think she’s really decided being attracted to a woman has to completely cancel out her desire for men and she can only be gay now. She’s Willow Rosenberg’d herself!

Annie

Does this mean now she regrets saying she was heroically gay and deserved a medal?

tifani

And because I know someone will bring this up: I’m not saying someone can’t realize they were actually just gay after history of being only with the opposite sex. I am saying that this is not the case for Joyce. She didn’t stop wanting Joe or men in the last two days. She accepted her attraction to a woman and then decided to embrace it so hard she tried to make it her actual sole sexuality but we know she is actually bisexual. And she can’t make herself “just gay” anymore than Ethan can make himself straight. We know she has a tough time accepting change within herself. And I think fully embracing the gay identity is her way of dodging the complexity of her actually being bisexual (and poly). Because the idea of herself as a now monogamous gay woman is an easier idea for her to swallow. She has attached the idea of a heroism that goes with that identity. However the reality of what she actually wants and is the bisexual reality is an identity that she herself judges. She associates it with cowardice (going back to men after being with a woman) just like she associates being poly with sexual deviance (being a hussy). She has crafted a tidy narrative to accept the dramatic changes in her life of the last 48 hours but that tidiness is slowly coming apart because it’s not accurate. Ethan showed her this when he tried to make himself heterosexual by dating her.

tifani

She should which likely means no.

tifani

Anyway Becky has never been sad and tortured about being gay. Neither has Dina. Neither has Leslie. Joyce has multiple examples of people being gay and being totally comfortable about it. Her only example of real gay angst has been Ethan. So I think this idea she has about being “really gay” having to come with suffering has to be a left over religious thing. But I also still think she has this idea that feeling good about any kind of sexual desire has to come with suffering.

MrShoggoth

Thank you! There's so many interesting stories about him, but that one sticks out because it was the only major one I didn't know before his funeral. My grandmother (his sister) brought up that they were "special" friends and then someone snorted and made a joke about it being "really special", and it snowballed from there.

taekwondogirl

Oh my god I really hope the bi as a possibility doesn't get dragged out for forever, we already have that with Billie

Scott Patton

To be fair to her it's a concept plenty of LGBTQ folks seem to struggle with applying as well. God knows I've been on the receiving end of plenty of dislike of bisexual people from people who should know better.

Maude Reads Things

That all makes a lot of sense. She'll get there eventually but she needs to fully accept the bisexuality at some point. Willas has said bi for both of them so I'm sure it'll be there eventually.
