Empress of Robots

This is possibly the most hilariously awkward use of The Newspaper (yet)

Graeme

Oh shoot, guess the faculty know

Lia

Who the FUCK

ArdieBea

Ooooooh fuck.

Andrea Andrew

🤣🤣🤣🤣🥰😋 Wow. That’s a weird predicament to be in.

Mohmi

I agree, Yuri IS leadership and he 👏 should 👏 say 👏 it!!!!!👏👏👏👏👏

HenryVolt

Oh you thought this was over? Nah this is going to be a hot topic in every politi-sci class and club on campus for the next week.

Sajuuk-Khar

Willis: maybe YOUR protagonist is doomed by the narrative. My Dorothy is the star of the narrative. She’s the lodestone. She’s the brightest thing in the fucking firmament. Dorothy: *this is not a good thing for her or anything she likes or wants*

Simon Magid

Oh wow. I think I am going to be fascinated by this guy. I am not sure I am going to like him yet, but I am very much going to be fascinated by him.

Fart Captor

I mean in general I'm inclined to agree that being a woman and kissing other women on the mouth is what all leaders should strive for, but there's a whole time and place thing that sadly must be considered

Dan Rabin

Magic hat from Joyce! Make me disappear! In the name of Fuckface and of all magical head adornments, I adjure thee!

Simon Magid

Yeah, after that whole crucifixion thing I also think he deserves to get laid. If he wants to, that is. I can totally buy into ace Jesus.

Fart Captor

I mean it was in the school paper. Of course they know. They probably don't all recognize the students in the picture but they're aware this went down

GundamBradley

He opens all of his classes on an image of women kissing.

Harold

"I CANNOT BE PERCEIVED!!!"

David M Willis

i mean it was a year ago, but yeah i'm pretty sure i made certain joyce gave dorothy a new hat just so she could pull it over her eyes for this scene

C.T. Phipps

I wonder if this si a prelude to the professor suggesting it was an attempt to go against the protest.

C

Oh boy, is this one going to get some...interesting commentary.

Astariel

Oh, shit! Also, this seems kind of inappropriate from the professor .

Sky Starlight

This is gonna be a hot topic *everywhere* for the next week

Harold

@ArdieBea: They already did. HEY-O!

Katrina Marie Paton

But wait, Jesus IS Christ so...did someone tell him to...you know, and he took it literally?

Sky Starlight

Someone told him to get nailed, and he didn't understand.

Proto_Eevee

did the itswalky rerun site go down? i just realized i can't go to it anymore

Omnithea

Pride & Shame 101

Mariah

Im getting real tired of people defending pretty immoral stuff in the name of "punishing" dorothy and joyce. this is a pretty dubious thing for a professor to do but they will cheer it on in the name of "consequences"

Mariah

paldins: thank god this plot line is over! willis: more dorothy and joyce kissing plotlines

Gale Tazzin

oh god i would perish instantly

Lazuli

oh my god

ArchineerLock

New all timer strip for this comic

Ze Myna

i was on call with someone and fell out laughing this took me so off guard. god damn it

Tessea

*chokes* Oh noooooo.... Dorothy - 'I love the photo, but I'm tired of everyone else having it!'

Harold

@Sky Starlight: That is in *such* bad taste. I am very, very cross with you.

C

...Honestly, the hat may be paying off in the moment.

Maude Reads Things

Oh god. Well, its nice to see O'Ryan is an asshole here too.

Tessea

Dorothy - 'I should have stuffed Joyce into a trunk and taken her to Yale.'

ArdieBea

Okay, slightly more reflective comment: This is in the realm of NOT GOOD. And not just because it's embarrassing for Dorothy. What's going on for her? Well, in the first place I think it's just sheer embarrassment; a picture was taken without her awareness of a pivotal moment in her life, an intensely personal moment that has changed her, and a moment of deep intimacy with the woman she is already thinking of as her wife (yes, I know, only Joyce has actually used those words, but Dorothy is absolutely going with that vibe.) And here it is being displayed as a teaching tool to her class. That has GOT to feel really out of place. And that's what embarrassment is; that feeling of being wrong-footed, of an action or word or person 'out of place.' But secondly, she's been made strongly aware since then of how inappropriate the kiss was (in that place) and especially of how inappropriate the coverage of it was in terms of the aims and intent of the protest. She is very unhappy that she and Joyce and that photo might have derailed that, when she intended in the moment to support it (even if her motivation was to frantically find a way of making her life meaningful again). And here it's being held up as an example of good leadership? That's FAR more embarrassing. Awful! I'm pretty sure Professor O'Ryan (a name of ill omen!) hasn't realised that it's Dorothy in that pic; the way he contrasts her apology with his definition of leadership and then illustrates that without further elaboration with 'The Kiss'. I doubt very much that he was trying to be ironic. I think he's just another of the many (Billie, Daisy that we know of, so far) who haven't recognised who it is. Being generous, he might have assumed that the IDS had permission to run the pic, so doesn't see anything wrong with using an already-public image. But you know what's really concerning me? It's not Dorothy; she'll cope with this discomfort and channel it into more appropriate activism. It's the professor. His definition of leadership is exactly what the protest was against - those who take ground (literally!) and won't cede it. It's an incitement to colonialism. To abuse of power. To unapologetic greed. If that becomes a thing, if the picture becomes not just a disruption and a distraction from the protest goals, but the iconography of those who want to undermine it, then Dorothy (and Joyce's) chances of being able to become part of organised activism in the near future are horribly, horribly spiked.

ProxityR

I dont wanna see dotty suffer when I too am suffering today from my dina plush going missing but marked delivered 😭😭

Graeme

Cut to Leslie’s class taking about the same picture…

Sajuuk-Khar

REMEMBER WHEN BILLIE FRAMED HER ROMANCE WITH RUTH AS A CONQUEST TO MAKE HERSELF SEEM COOL? Ruth: never knew and wouldn’t care, probably Lucy: remembers, but doesn’t care much Forest Hall Nerds: don’t remember, wouldn’t care Billie: has completely forgotten she ever did this, would act like she doesn’t care Dorothy: wasn’t even present for it and shouldn’t know—DID NOT know until five minutes prior, when she became hyperaware not only that it must have happened, but that now she was also doing it, a knowledge that burns like fire, it is killing her

Waifu Purplebutt

>when you're the subject of a lesson at school for something you did recently

Zesstra

Conceal the doinkers! They'll never recognise me that way!

Logibear

Fuck this guy. Whats the end goal of this lecture? To use someones experience without their permission as a way to construct a narrative? And you know that person is a student in your class? Fuck him.

Logibear

Doesn't matter if its a narrative that might even hold some sway/merit, Dorothy didn't consent to this.

Kazo

Punch him

Jens H. (Nethead Jay)

What the everloving fuck is happening here? And who is this ginormous asshole...

Jessie Wilson

Hey fellow teachers. Let's play the Dumbing of Age drinking game. Whenever you see a safeguarding violation take a drink

Jasmijn Wellner

"Leadership is my Joyce/Dorothy shipname. Don't ask me to explain it."

Sajuuk-Khar

This is going to be an exciting first major conflict lol Joyce: feels like she’s a fake queer person because she has support and lacks angst, desperate to be validated, has Dorothy on a pedestal Dorothy: mildly jaded about queerness due to not being from cult world, despises self-aggrandizement and in a guilt war against her own privilege, bad at validating, has Joyce on a different kind of pedestal

Jesse

I think professor O’Ryan might be a sociopath.

KittyKai

...THAT'S ONE HELL OF A WAY TO TEACH A CLASS 😨😨

Bill Simpson

Fuck no, I want to keep my kidneys!

darklion

At this rate Dorothy and Joyce are going to have to leave IU. It will be intolerable for them to attend classes there fairly soon.

Empress of Robots

This is like every nightmare I have ever had about college rolled up into one, cloned itself, fucked the clone, and then THAT strip came out.

Empress of Robots

Also, I cannot WAIT to see the horribly inappropriate way that Robin uses The Newspaper in her class.

Beck Chonigman

We've never had true leadership in the Whitehouse bc we've never had a President have a public sapphic makeout sesh land on front-page news.

OH GOD OH FUCK IT'S BART O'RYAN Ol' Bart has been a hanging sword of damocles over the narrative for god knows how long. I remember reading the commentary for it's walky and seeing "I know where O'Ryan is in DOA" and getting a feeling of intense dread. Of all the It's Walky guys to show up again Bart might be the second worst possible one. O'Ryan was always interesting because he represents the culmination of a recurring theme through the Walkyverse and even into DOA of Consqeuences. Starting out from "Joe you need to stop being a sex pest or your soul will be damned to hell for all eternity! Not because of the pest part but moreso the Sex part." to the endgame of "Please for the love of god don't murder your clone they can and will arrest your ass for murder please god think about the consequences of your actions". Let me talk about Deep Space Nine for a minute. One of the biggest things people will tell you they love about DS9 is it's premise. Rather than the usual Star Trek fair of visiting a random planet solving some major issue and then blasting off into space for the next adventure DS9 takes place on a space station firmly planted in it's place in the universe. Where in TNG they could torch and run in DS9 thing's aren't so simple. The grounded setting means issues are given time to stick around and aren't easily resolved and ultimately face the consequences. DOA is like DS9. Nothing ever goes down easily here. Your immortal blood enemy lives down the hall in the same dorm as you. You can't just blow your problems brains out and get away with it. It's a grounded setting and that means you can't just run away forever. I think consequences are still one of the main themes of DOA but the understanding of what those consequences are has vastly changed. O'Ryan is like the grim reaper. In a story like DOA where the entire premise is basically fuck around and find out the comic O'Ryan seems like the biggest threat around. A guy who's entire career is making sure your ass Finds Out. Question remains if he's an alt right shithead this time around. Not actually sure what O'Ryans political beliefs were in the walkyverse? Probably conservative but almost every talking point he ended up making made total sense. Don't shoot your clone and maybe reconsider your job when you work for a top secret organization that kidnaps teenagers and tells their parents they died horribly to cover their tracks. SEMME was a fucking mess. This has gone on way too long and lost the plot a bit. I think what i'm trying to say is i'm excited to see how O'Bryan's character plays out the firmly leftist DOA compared to the still pretty right wing end of IW!

David M Willis

See, a lot of the issue with Bart O'Ryan in regards to Dumbing of Age vs It's Walky! is that he can't have the same role he did before, because everything's kind of flipped. In It's Walky!, the protagonists were, like, literally unchecked secret police. Bart O'Ryan was the voice of "oh hey maybe that's terrible." He wasn't the establishment, the protagonists were the establishment. but in dumbing of age, the protagonists are just students and school administration would be the establishment so from the outset bart o'ryan can't truly be bart o'ryan in dumbing of age, the role of Character The Protagonists Don't Like Who Keeps Saying Annoyingly True Shit goes to Raidah

shiftdruid

Hm. Don't like his eyes

shiftdruid

maybe that's greenphobic but when a dude shows up and is way too intense about Leadership and Submission, and he's Looking with his Eyes,,,

shiftdruid

whats a safeguard never heard of her

Jayne Lindgren

I love Dorothy and Joyce and love that they're together, but I've really started to dread seeing them show up in strips. Because it feels like each appearance is just so that they can: - Have a brief moment of enjoying their new relationship - Have a third party butt into to explain why they, the third party, personally disagrees with their, D&J's, decisions and why that makes them, D&J, bad people. - Have commenters defend the third party exhaustively, no matter how bad a person said third party is or what they've done in the past or whether their criticisms are actually valid or immoral themselves. - Where's Joe?

Mariah

exactly like it feels like a special sort of sadism reserved for teen girls who dare to not be perfect or make mistakes its less about "cheating is okay because of shipping" but the broader trend of misogyny and homphobia I see everywhere online.

Heatth

I honestly don't understand what he is trying to say. Is he humiliating her on purpose or being supportive in a very inappropriate way?

Shane Wegner

To take a swing at your question: Intended lesson: Probably something like “while most of you cowards were hiding from your destiny, these real leaders were forging a path to what they desired with their own two hands! Fear meant nothing to them. Take notes!” As for consent, public spaces, especially with lots of cameras such as protests have No Expectation of Privacy. Entering one is consenting to that, although almost no one actually expects to end up in a newspaper, it’s a slight possibility. Do I think it’s a chill choice of lessons? No.

Dan Rabin

I suspect he's centered on himself teaching his class in the way he thinks is important, and isn't much thinking about Dorothy's welfare.
