Yesssssss. Burn the bridgessssss. More drama on the garbage fire.

jafortee

Is this going to be the last strip that Joyce has friends?

tifani

Finally someone said the word bi! Also yeah @ Joyce in that first panel: are you fucking serious?

Alexis Smith

Oh my God the dramas just beginning, Joyce calm your titties down.

Ria

Oh baby this is delicious, this right here is the peak fiction

Fart Captor

Is it too late for Leslie to knock some points off her gender studies grade?

Ria

This the type of shit that's got me reading through the whole walkyverse

MDL

Honestly good on Walky for actually standing up for himself a bit. I was shocked he considered Joyce a friend back when he talked to Booster. Joyce was so anxious about breaking Joe's heart but didn't hesitate to smash Walky's to pieces and laugh in his face about it.

Joe Crow - Words & Pictures

Hey Dotty, I know you’re using the brain cell right now, but you might wanna slide it back to Joyce for a sec, I think she needs it more than you right now.

MrShoggoth

Joyce is such a sore winner that she wouldn't look out of place competing in a Warhammer 40,000 tourney circa 2009. Also if that’s not a hell of a burn on Billifer I don’t know what is.

Annie

So Joyce may be demisexual? But yes! Someone finally said something to her!!

Vivian

Fire! Fire! Fire!

Rob McBobson

It's weird, but it does feel pretty in-character for Joyce to laugh in Walky's face about getting his girlfriend, and the next day go "No hard feelings?" sincerely and not see the contradiction there.

Logibear

Gosh I hope the next strip is just one or two people leaving panel by panel with the exact same composition.

Kelly (they-them)

Joyce is only into Dorothy. The fact that she is utterly obsessed with Sal's hair and vibe and that she wants to crawl into Jennifer's breasts to be safe and warm forever is just a coincidence. Also, incredibly telling - telling of Joyce's very specific gayness in only one area- that Joyce thinks queer people perfect inspirational demi gods. If only Joyce could be so gay and perfect and autistic, but alas. She is merely Dorothysexual, flawed, and autistic

ArdieBea

Oh, Joyce. Oh, my beautiful blorbo. That "And Jennifer." is absolutely perfect and triggered a solid sixty seconds LOUD laughter! Especially coming straight after the garbage fire of everything else she's just said. Beautiful juxtaposition of tension-building and gag. Pure DoA.

Fart Captor

*Gonzo voice* "…who was NOT straight"

Kelly (they-them)

If I could share that "Sure, Jan" meme gif, I would

Garrett Kunkel

"Straights and Jennifer" made me laugh audibly

C.T. Phipps

no call out from anyone else.

Empress of Robots

Awww, Joyce is having her first gay conflict with The Straights...about how she's not really gay. wut.

tifani

Walky is being revealed as WAY more mature than he has ever been given credit for with his reaction to Joyce right now.

Mohmi

Joyce simply had a Gamer Moment and popped off a little too hard at the clutch victory, stop being so salty tbh its just a game :)

Empress of Robots

Also the subtle side-eye from Jennifer in the last panel at "The Straights and Jennifer" is sending me.

tifani

The fact that she is being the most insufferable she has ever been does make that behavior track, yes.

Megh

Dumbing of Age Book 16: You're Just a Bunch of Straights, and Jennifer

tifani

Joyce is NOT demisexual come on. The girl is horny as fuck all the time and no kind of mental connection is necessary to make that happen. She’s just bisexual and uninformed about it.

Fart Captor

I don't think Joyce is demi anything, but especially not demisexual (she's much too horny). What she IS, is bisexual and in denial

ArdieBea

Yeah, good for Walky. But he absolutely earned that laughter after FIFTEEN FUCKING YEARS of dissing Joyce's feelings for Dorothy at every opportunity. And given that his whole brand is, "I'm a carefree goof who doesn't get feelings," and Joyce's autism, this was almost inevitable. It doesn't make what Joyce said or did ok. But nor does it make her a villain and him a victim.

Packy Anderson

I was reading that as "The Schuyler Sisters"... "and Peggy!" But that works, too.

Harold

Only because Sarah isn't here yet

AE Gonzalez

“. . . and I’m Doonese!”

C.T. Phipps

"Gays are all inspirational warrior demigods." That is a sentence.

tifani

That bowling party is just going to end up being Dorothy, Joyce, and Asma.

Astariel

Still love Joyce, but she pretty much had that coming from Walky. The idolizing and idealizing of "real" gay people in panel three is pretty unhealthy. And for some reason, the line "You're just a bunch of straights and Jennifer!" is absolutely hilarious. It's like she respects that Jennifer doesn't identify as gay or bi, but she can't possibly call her straight.

ArdieBea

Yeah, the boy's growing up. Slowly. And as Joyce has found on many occasions (along with Sal) sometimes your peers are slow to see that growth and still operate on old assumptions.

Harold

@QueenOfSodor: "The Straights and Jennifer" would be an even better name, though

Harold

@Fart Captor: Leslie just woke up screaming again and has no idea why

Harold

@AE Gonzalez: "With my by myself"

Astariel

It certainly is. "Inspirational perfect warrior demigods," even.

Smoochie

So Jennifer is a sexual orientation unto herself? Nice.

Dan Rabin

VIsuals: the composition in the last two panels is very attractive, with Joyce and her main antagonist placed at the apex of the triangle, Sal from the Read group asserting her powerful solitude on the bottom left, and the contingent from Forest on the right (Jacob is Lucy's guest, of course). Deep meaning? Nah—but it's a nice-looking way to use the well-established location. Joyce-wise: I'm thinking back to her first day with Liz in town, when she kept using her new identity as an atheist to classify herself as superior, and it badly damaged her relationship with Becky. And now she's using her new identity as gay to classify herself as superior, and it has badly damaged her relationship with Becky. They say that you go to college to learn. Joyce probably aced Leslie's course on paper, but has trouble with certain nuances of actual social situations, almost as if she were on the sp.... oh.

Harold

Alternate panel 2: Walky shakes Joyce's hand, and then Joyce says, "By the way, guess where *this* was not that long ago"

tifani

I really think in like the next ten minutes she’s going to do what none of her behavior over the last two days (apparently) actually did. She’s going to alienate her entire friend group (or a significant majority) just based on the conversation that results from her behavior right now. If she had just made some effort to be normal about this the social fall out would have been minimal but her determination not to do that is going to ensure friend group fracture.

Grace Serenity

I've found that Walky puts on a mask of immaturity, but will actually be an adult when the situation requires

Girlycore

If I was Walky, I'd rather no one jumped in while I was trying to say my piece. It's frustrating to be the wronged party and not get to say shit because others are piling in to start a fight.

Lazuli

gen q. does joyce know about ruth and jennifer?

C.T. Phipps

Yeah, Joyce wanted to rub it in Walkerton's face. She's on the spectrum but that wasn't a misunderstanding, that was malice.

Grace Serenity

It's a very fundie attitude! She's still recovering.

Ian Walling

Ngl, this last month has made me lose so much respect for both Joyce and Dorothy in the ways they have treated the people in their lives. Joyce especially is shockingly callous.

Smoochie

Joyce sublimating her sexuality/understanding for the hole that her faith left as a different form of manic worship/ten toes down mindset is so disturbingly on brand

Astariel

But she's not classifying herself as superior. She's saying gay people are superior, but she doesn't count as one because she's only gay for Dorothy.

KittyKai

I bet Joyce could have an orgy with every girl in the wing, and then end it all with "Still straight tho" xP

Astariel

Yeah, she learned about them when Carla revealed them to everyone when Ruth was suicidal. (Well, technically a little after that since that was the weekend she and Becky went home, but Sarah filled them in when they got back.)

Lazuli

absolutely foul on her part

ArdieBea

I don't think she trying to be malicious, and I don't think it's a misunderstanding about meaning or intent, but a failure to grasp the reality of another person's feelings and the validity of those feelings. That's something Joyce has always struggled with, especially when people don't seem to share her understanding of the world. It's an aspect of autism, sure, and it's also been DEEPLY reinforced by a fundamentalist upbringing. She might see herself as simply pointing out realities so that everyone can get with the program and they can go on being friends unless she's had it specifically pointed out to her how she's running rough-shod over relationships and individuals. And then she'll be ashamed again, and then she'll do better. That's the Joyce cycle.

Simon Magid

That was also my first reaction. I admit that had me snickering.

Jennifer Novelli

Incoming "Wow, screw you then," from the rest of the group.

Lazuli

when youre such a sexuality unto yourself that only your name will suffice. its like prince.

Lazuli

serial numbers filed off "josie and the pussycats"

C.T. Phipps

Maybe but I think it's just old fashioned gloating and full awareness of it, which Walky puts out there by saying she's being a sore winner. Which is to say that I believe she knows she's hurting Walky but enjoying rubbing salt in the wound because it feels so good to "win" over him. Basically fans often ignore Joyce has a dark side because she is usually so sunny.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Kai Pretty sure I met that person in college, a few times

Jennifer Novelli

Joyce went from needing to be "good" to "nothing I do can be bad," which is a dangerous path.

Beck Chonigman

Come on y'all. She's obviously heteroflexible.

Sajuuk-Khar

Joyce and Jennifer doing the Predator handshake meme on “bisexuals refusing to acknowledge bisexuality as a concept”

Sajuuk-Khar

JENNY! JENNY!! JENNYYYY AND THE STRAAAAAAIIIIIGHTS

MrShoggoth

Some huge “Hey, I’ve only been here a few minutes, what’s going on?” energy.

Fart Captor

Given her history of oogling Sal's hair and Jennifer's boobs I have to insist that Dorothy is NOT the only woman she finds attractive. She's just the only one she liked enough to get it through her thick skull that her feelings were not platonic

Andrea Andrew

Oof. I’m still rooting for Joyce, and this crash out is still hard to watch. I hope Joyce stops this closeted denial about being bi/pan/biromantic homosexual, and she stops being so smug.

MST3K.fan: The Cheesy Movie Essays

I'm not sure anyone in that last panel is well and truly straight. Maybe Walky will be the last straight standing when all is said and done.

Tessea

Uhhhh, Joyce, you're overcorrecting badly. Sarah or Becky needs to show up and talk her down.

Sajuuk-Khar

If she [continues to] play her cards wrong, it could be the last strip she has friends AND the strip that gets Dorothy to break up with her

Sajuuk-Khar

Jennifer all looking at Joyce like “wait. White…blonde…slutty…a neocortex of incredible smoothness…She knows our ways as if born to them… Can it be? Is JOYCE the Head Cheerleader from the Outer World? The CHEERSATZ HADERACH?!”

Sajuuk-Khar

She absolutely does, yes

Sajuuk-Khar

“I, a mere woman-fucker (sinner) could never be ranked among the gays (elect)”, said the ex-Calvinist who is completely okay

Lazuli

looking at sal and getting the impression thisll be the moment, if not a catalyst for it, that causes her to stop humoring joyce and distance herself from her

Grace Serenity

The classic "Do I want to be her or be with her, biblically?"

Logibear

This is peak fresher though "I only discovered this thing about myself a few days ago and I am now the master and final arbiter about it, no one else has ever gone through what I have gone through"

Grace Serenity

Walky has said he'd blow a dude for pizza

CoreyWW

Is it fucked up even though I like everyone here my reaction genuinely is “(Clap) LE’S GO LE’S GO LE’S GO”

Smoochie

We’ll see. Sal might have a high threshold for the nonsense, or is giving Joyce a level of grace

Teeceemcg

Joyce continues to get exponentially more dislikable and annoying. In her current state, is she even allowed to come near having a "come to Jesus" moment?

taekwondogirl

I think doing anything additional would require Sal admitting she cares about anything, so she probably won't. It's one thing Malaya is correct about!

taekwondogirl

What?? I don't think we've seen any indication of being interested in their own gender by anyone other than Jennifer / Billie in the last panel.

HenryVolt

She's a sore winner and loser, when Dorothy was with him the first time she did nothing but pray on the downfall of their relationship.

HenryVolt

Sounds like Joyce to a T.

Kelly (they-them)

Oh god. I'm suddenly reminded of my senior year of high school and all of my "jokes" about a college lesbian phase

Kelly (they-them)

Walky is gay for pay. Za. Payza. Pizza. Walky is gay for pizza.

ArdieBea

Walky has always been very bicurious and also (especially in the fragility of his 'masculinity' very eggy.

Sajuuk-Khar

It has to be quality pie, though, I imagine, Walky has— Well, okay, it has to be at LEAST Pizza Hut.

Zesstra

Overcorrecting badly is deeply in character for Joyce. See her "burn it and never tell me where the ashes are buried" approach when told that maybe her Dexter and Monkey Master fandom was possibly idolatrous, and of course her incredibly obnoxious form of newfound atheism.

Zesstra

Leslie: I dreamed someone just learned to regurgitate what they needed for the exam and didn't internalise any of it! Anna: I've got some news for you.

NinjaZaku

It's never a good thing when Walky is anything resembling the voice of reason in a situation.

Smoochie

If Walky genuinely felt like putting the screws to her, he could point out that she’s proven him right in all aspects. That she really was after Dorothy the whole time regardless of denial or their nasty back and forth, and she was in what amounted to a cult that she now sees as an ignorant time of life. That he had her pegged from the start, and no amount of rubbing her “getting” Dorothy like she is a prize changes that.

Lazuli

"this is a dark souls 3 amount of cinders"

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K Pizza Hut? Cmon, now. Hold out for something that might not come from a building shared with a Taco Bell, at least.

etherealDesign

oh man, I'm so glad joyce has reverted to form. on one hand she's a perfect sweetiepie angel, on the other hand he has a GIFT for saying whatever is guaranteed to piss off as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time.

Sajuuk-Khar

My observation about how Joyce’s superpower is saying the worst thing possible in any given situation keeps being more and more true and I don’t like it

Sajuuk-Khar

Look, I’m talking *Walky’s* standards, not mine. Walky is on record as thinking the Bell is fine dining. He would absolutely suck off Asher for a slice of Hot Dog Stuffed Crust.

Dot

Gonna be real Joyce what exactly did you expect his reaction to be

Dot

Right now I think she’d rather come to Dorothy

joe mcguire

The whole point of the strip is for Joyce, and to a lesser extent the other characters, to be stupid and make bad, cringey decisions which they learn just enough of to make different but still cringey decisions, —you know, like how people do— and I love it, but the cringing remains constant and intense 😅

Dot

Yes.

Smoochie

She and Jennifer should start a— Hey, does that mean Joyce’s sexual orientation is Jennifer? Wait, wait, nevermind.

Albi

BITE HER, WALKY. JUST DO A GOOD OL CHOMP

Albi

SO HAPPY Walky called her out here. Like what the fuck!?

Albi

omg i am crying at my desk at this right now. this is amazing.

Smoochie

We call that church gay where I’m from. Florida. The answer is Florida.

Albi

Jennifer and What Revolution?

T Campbell

I don't think Sal even has a reason to care about this. She puts up with lots of stuff she considers nonsense in the name of having friends. And who hasn't acted a little weird the morning after losing their virginity? It might be a little different if Joyce hasn't moved on from these basic themes three weeks from now, but knowing her, we're going to get an anxious overcorrection long before then

T Campbell

If they didn't throw her over for the fundy talking points, I don't think they're going to throw her over for this

Joey245

Joyce, I love you but please, learn to shut the fuck up and read the room sometimes XD

Harold

"Suddenly, from out of nowhere, came a mighty HOMPK! And there was much rejoicing."

Shane Wegner

I'm kinda leaning if Joyce wants to define hereself as Dorothysexual, why does anyone else get to chime in otherwise?

wyatt

I love strips where both a) joyce says infuriating but character-consistent nonsense and b) she gets the best line

tifani

Thinking on this more the behavior here really only supports my theory that Joyce is in a trauma induced self destructive spiral. She walks into this situation and reacts in a way guaranteed to shine a spot light on the behavior she anticipates judgment over. Announcing that she fucked can come across as bragging but it also ensures preemptively no one can bring it up before her and by doing so weaponize it against her. Then when Walky shows up she can’t make herself immediately pivot because admitting guilt towards Walky would equate in her mind to admitting she feels shame about her behavior. Joyce is doubling down on her refusal to feel shame to cope with all the major and sudden changes she’s created in her life. But backing down in anyway makes the structure of her coping mechanism become very fragile. So I think that’s why she tries the “no hard feelings” move. She can’t say she’s sorry to Walky. She can’t admit she has anything to be sorry for. So she tries to turn it into something like two worthy rivals in a heated competition and the better (wo)man won. But this was never that. There is no honor in how Joyce got Dorothy. Joyce knows this but she wanted a better alternative to view herself through. Walky is not going to sign on to her reality rewrite. So she immediately begins to spiral and lash out at the environment around her.

tifani

This is very much apart of everything I’ve been saying about not being able to support Dorothy with Joyce and their dynamic currently reading as unhealthy to me. Dorothy has been enabling Joyce’s self sabotage because this behavior suits her desires. They have both spent the last two days in a feedback loop of refusing to self reflect on their choices beyond mild surface level guilt. The second they exit their little bubble of each other and reality presents itself all the careful lies begin to break apart.

Harold

Later in the day, Joyce encounters Dina and continues her efforts to be kinder to her. Joyce: "Dina, recent events have proven more than ever that you, and indeed all gay people, are inspirational perfect warri--" Dina: "Actually, I have been meaning to speak with you about this. It is possible that, technically, I am not gay." Joyce: "JUST TAKE THE W, DINA, I AM SAYING YOU'RE BETTER THAN ME." Dina: "That has always gone without saying."

Sajuuk-Khar

Joyce: Listen up, straights! I gave Joe an impulsive crazy blowjob right before Dorothy and I had sex! That’s proof positive that I’m not a *real*, pure and persecuted and amazingly resilient gay person, I’m just into Dorothy! Everyone else: *mortified, disgusted* Jennifer: *reverently* Lisan al-Gaib…!

Harold

@Sajuuk-Khar: She likes to bi-erase And yell out "FAAAACE!!!" An alpha bongo like you've never see-een, oh-oh J-J-J-Jenny and The Straights!

tifani

And now I’m gonna bring up Joe because he is EXTREMELY RELEVANT. Joyce’s feelings on Joe have mirrored a lot of the comments lately DON’T BRING UP JOE DON’T MAKE THIS ABOUT JOE JUST CELEBRATE THE GLORIOUS NEW QUEER AWAKENING REMEMBERING JOE AND FEELING BAD FOR JOE MAKES WHAT JOYCE AND DOROTHY HAVE SOMEHOW LESS. LOOK AT DOROTHY. FOCUS ON DOROTHY TO THE EXCLUSION OF EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE ELSE. But that is not how life works or feelings work or stories work. Joe has now been absent for an amount of time that guarantees him showing back up is going to be the explosion of a bomb that rips apart ALL THIS SHIT. Joe serves a similar purpose to Walky and Sarah he will NOT let Joyce delude herself BUT he is also in love with her. And he has already established he is willing to stick around and have the patience for the journey she is going on that none of these people are signed up for or honestly are under any obligation to entertain. Joyce needs Joe. Moving past who she feels more romantic love for right now because it’s irrelevant. She NEEDS him. She was in a very clear path towards positivie change while with him. Cutting him out of her life and only having Dorothy leads to this mess before you. Joe renters and is hurt but willing to stick around for the next part of this journey and yes that includes Dorothy.

Riley Aurelia

Because we as readers know that this is explicitly her saying she's not "really gay" because she hasn't suffered enough to earn the title. Her saying "I'm only gay for Dorothy" isn't a cutesy way of making her sexuality her own, it's her gatekeeping herself from her identity and betrays an unhealthy view of what it MEANS to be gay that should be corrected.

Empress of Robots

Walky is apparently the embodiment of the comments section...

MiqoRems

I feel compelled to remind you that the comic is not in real time and he has not, in fact, been doing anything to Joyce for fifteen years.

Mariah

the comments is closer to radiah at this point,

Sajuuk-Khar

1.) IN THE DISCO! 2.) IN THE DISCO! 3.) IN THE…TACO BELL

Empress of Robots

I also just realized that this is like a majority of the remaining Straights in the main gang (just missing Joe, Sarah, and Amber)

Vivian

15 years, 5 months — basically the same thing, right? Besides: they both got kidnapped and nearly murdered, there's no better bonding experience in the world!

Dmitri0240

I have to wonder how many people currently complaining in the comments had a fully-formed and intellectually coherent view of their own sexuality 72 hours after first realizing their orientation was not what they originally assumed it was. Yes, she's being annoying. But she's also being honest with what she's feeling in the moment; honest with herself and honest with people who may have valuable insight into what she's going through. And that's the quickest path to her eventually gaining the perspective and wisdom that so many people are clamoring for.

Empress of Robots

THIS! I recently helped one of my oldest friends realize she's bi from a bunch of stuff that happened 20 years ago (when we were in college, not with me). My friend: "I'm not bi! It's totally straight to watch lesbian porn, make out with a handful of girls in your early 20s, and also being certain I would have dated another woman if I hadn't started dating my now-husband." Me: I dunno. That's all pretty gay. My friend: Yeah. Like that time I got to grope my friend's boobs. Which was hot. Also, my wife was pretty certain she wasn't some flavor of gay earlier on in our relationship and considered me an exception...until she realized she is very queer and very bi.

Mitzi B.

Joyce going "gay people are inspirational perfect warrior demigods" feels like cope when you consider the gay person she's closest to - Becky - is someone she feels guilty about hurting.

Crunchos cereal

Now I realize that I think we don’t know Lucy’s and Jacob’s preferences! Sal has said she’s straight, Jennifer is I think bi, but those two could be straight or bi or pan, or something else!

Jennifer Novelli

You can tell someone to fuck off without throwing them over. Anyone who won't tell you to fuck off is not really your friend. 😀

Jennifer Novelli

Rough trade isn't gay. Pizza trade, however, is delicious! 😋

Dot

I thiiiiink Jacob said that he was straight in Shortpacked! but I could be wrong. And of course these things can change.

VengeanceKnight

Lucy once referred to Joyce as “a bisexual version of me,” so I think it’s fairly safe to assume she’s straight.

VengeanceKnight

He also said “anyone would hit that” when referring to Jacob, which had the amusing effect of bothering the then still-in-the-closet— …Oh sweet merciful crap, now I’m wondering if Walky/Danny wouldn’t work really, really well. Amber would certainly be very happy about it.

Lynne B.

I honestly find Joyce really really annoying now.

Empress of Robots

No no no, Joyce is a B. Jocelyne is a T (and also a B and/or Q)

SkittleE

A neocortex of incredible smoothness has me cackling so hard

SkittleE

@5099 5618 v2.0 As in anyone would be justified in shooting her out of a cannon right now? Because that's true

tifani

I do want to take a second to focus on Walky saying “congratulations on embracing your inner gayness and BREAKING EVERYTHING” because yeah. She kind of did. That’s been the main issue. The problem isn’t that Joyce is bisexual (not calling her gay, she’s bi and we know she’s bi) the problem is how she decided to deal with that. She and Dorothy did NOT have to go about getting together in this way and they basically actively did everything they could to NOT go about it in a responsible way. They ran from their responsibilities, behaved recklessly, made little to no effort to resist getting physical while still being involved with other people and completely ditched dealing with the aftermath of the hurt feelings of their ex partners and friends who would be hurt by their actions. They can’t be blamed for how they feel about each other. They can absolutely be blamed for how they decided to deal with how they feel about each other. They hurt people. Their social circle is permanently altered. And what this group had before together IS broken. It can and likely will be rebuilt but it will never be what it was ever again.

Andrea Andrew

I’m confused as to why she’s suddenly still closeted about her own sexuality when she doesn’t have to be in denial anymore.

Andrea Andrew

Either that, or Lucy considers herself pan or Demi, though those aren’t likely.

Dot

At the start of this strip we see Joyce trying to play in the space of her and Walky's little rivalry, their banter, and she gets smacked down in response by him basically saying "what? no, fuck you, I'm still hurt." It hasn't really caught up with her that things are not the same as they were and never can be again.

Andrea Andrew

Congratulations on your marriage.

Empress of Robots

I honestly don't know? Anytime someone has suggested a threeway with Amber she's commented that it'd need to be two guys or else she wasn't interested (can't remember where that was though, but I think it's happened at least twice)

Empress of Robots

(That said, any of the aforementioned Straights are welcome to have gay awakening whenever they want.)

Amós Batista

main site will be insufferable tomorrow hahah

Dan Rabin

Perhaps the categories she uses for her thinking are not the same as the ones shared among her peer group, and she's struggling with mapping between the two languages.

Smoochie

This does kinda go back to ‘love conquers all’ a bit for Joyce though. In the past that wasn’t affecting so close to her friend group. It affected Raidah with Jacob, but Joyce wasn’t worried about that. Sarah and Dorothy were worried on Joyce’s behalf with Joe but it wasn’t shaking social circles exactly.

tifani

The problem is that she’s using the wrong label to describe her orientation. When she says “gay” it feels inaccurate to her because she knows she’s still attracted to men and likely primarily attracted to men and only occasionally attracted to women the primary woman she’s attracted to being Dorothy. The word she’s looking for to describe herself is bisexual but despite learning about that in gender studies it’s not an identity she feels comfortable claiming for herself. Not because it’s inaccurate but because it’s too complicated. Becky called her gay and she has decided to go all in on Dorothy because as established when she confronted Ruth over dating Jason and her whole thing about gay people being heroic demigods for her being gay is the more noble option. She’s doing with her sexuality what she tried to do with Walky with the no hard feelings thing after being outright cruel to him which is turn a messy thing into something more manageable. She doesn’t know how to deal with her attraction to men in addition to her attraction to a woman. She doesn’t know how to exist in a middle ground and not an exclusive category. She’s honest enough with herself to know that gay is not the right word for her but she cannot make herself say out loud what she actually is yet.

Dot

Yeah, the last time Joyce ran roughshod over another person's relationship, the blowback was extremely contained. Shouldn't be the case here.

Maude Reads Things

A bunch of straights and Jennifer would make a sick band name, ngl

Rob McBobson

@Harold: I don't follow. This is probably my forgetfulness talking, but what would indicate that Dina's not technically gay?

Johanne

Chomp, Champ!

KittyKai

DRAMA ROMANCE BLOODSHED >:3

Harold

Jennifer and The New Plow-Her Generation

Maybeeus

Jennifer really is Joyce's mentor in bisexuality.... From planting the seeds all the way back in book 3 to now. Sarah's fear of her molding Joyce into her own image has finally come to pass but hilariously in none of the ways you'd expect. Her being in denial in the exact same way is kind of the icing on the cake. Also love how her comment puts both Ethan and Becky on a pedestal but also Jocelyne who no doubt to her also fits the "Inspirational Perfect Warrior Demigods" description.

Albi

Too late, I am the Walky now.

Albi

HOLLERING, I tells ya!

Jeremy AR

I can attest that ot is indeed insufferable.

Lynne B.

Of all the things she's doing, honestly that's the thing I have the most sympathy for. Trauma and conditioning around "deviant" identities that's part of childhood indoctrination doesn't vanish easily. She's learned a lot and has challenged her conditioning when it comes to her friends and family, but that doesn't mean she's able to apply that to herself without any glitches. What really irks me is that she's still so wound up in herself, that she is only dimly aware and not really paying attention to how she's wounding others.
