Jeremy AR

... Fuck that is just really sad 😢

Logibear

Fuck man. Please hug her Dorothy.

MrShoggoth

And the shoe drops. It wasn’t about Joyce and Dorothy, that was the final straw that broke the camel’s back.

Fart Captor

ohhhhh nooooo, she's hurting even worse than I thought 😭

ArdieBea

Yeah, that's what the big deal has been all along. Remember those scenes when Becky, Joyce, and Jocelyn broke into the deserted Macintyre house - and all Becky saw (besides memories of Joyce through the years) was her mum? This shoe's been a very long time in the dropping.

Logibear

Also really enjoying Becky being stern but kind here. She realise's that she needs to say these things out loud to someone and she has been shutting down Dorothy when she was trying to make it (non-maliciously) about herself.

EnterTheHero

Oh, *fuck*, this one hits hard...

Smoochie

I genuinely don’t even know how or where Becky could begin to explain to Dina what the real issue is. She would have to get herself sorted first and I don’t say that to downplay just how much she has been hurting

CoreyWW

Fuckkkkk man, this whole sequence with Dorothy and Becky kicks so much ass. This is all really resonant stuff Edit: Boy, I’ve only been reading Dumbing of Age since the beginning of November and it just struck me the number of times I’ve gotten sad in real life because of the characters being sad is SUUUPER high. And a disproportionate amount of times has been specifically because of Becky being sad lol

Fart Captor

What's next, Willis? Dina gonna lose interest in dinosaurs? You MONSTER 😭

Dan Rabin

Even Joyce didn't give Dorothy this view of what it was like to believe and then lose faith. Becky turns halfway towards Dorothy to explain herself, and lets loose her tears, shown with modified eye-highlights and a wiping hand in panels 3 and 4. The two final narrow frames show Dorothy responding with tears of her own, normally shown in this comic by modifying the reflection highlights on the character's eyes. But Dorothy is wearing glasses and facing a brightly-lit window, so even though she doesn't move her head the real-in-world reflection has to make room for the how-comics-work reflection. She drops an eyebrow and wrinkles her mouth, too, but tears need eyes to sell them.

Harold

I don't think we've *ever* seen Becky this openly vulnerable and emotional in front of another person, not even Joyce - and to have it be *Dorothy*, no less, makes it even more affecting. They're both crying at the end of this strip, and frankly so am I.

GundamBradley

I'm sure the people going hard as shit on her in the site comments are going to feel really cool after reading this one.

Logibear

Carla is going to give up pranks?

Harold

Walky will give up McNuggets. (Well, I mean, he really *should*.)

5099 5618 v2.0

Dorothy gonna develop an EXTREMELY MISGUIDED crush on Becky? (Proposed ship name: Event Horizon)

GundamBradley

Yep, or how one of the main things Becky was upset about with Joyce hiding she was an atheist now was how Joyce had previously joined her in talking about Becky's mom's spirit, so what really rattled her (beyond feeling shut out) was that the doubts began growing when she didn't have Joyce in her camp on it. I also somewhat suspect Becky's mother was potentially queer, too, and locked into marriage, and that this might be a factor in why Becky's growing crisis about orientation stuff is as rough as it is, on top of everything else happening.

GundamBradley

Right, along with what had already begun only a few nights prior, with Becky flat-out stating that she cares about Dorothy and that they are friends, and the "rivalry" is a bit. She knows Dorothy cares about her, too, and doesn't need it stated at this time.

5099 5618 v2.0

Mind you, I'm not sure this makes sense as a response to Dorothy and Joyce getting together, either. Something is off, here.

C

That one hurts deep.

Harold

@5099 5618 v2.0: Or vicey-versey

Dan Rabin

I guess she wanted some constant from her childhood to still be with her, and they're all gone now: her mom, her evil dad, her rejecting church, Joyce out of her desired reach, and so God can also take a hike. It is unfortunate that Dina also received that last message, but maybe that can be repaired. I'm suppressing my analysis of contrasts with Joyce's changes because today belongs to Becky.

DramaQueen

This is a part of Becky we haven’t seen, vulnerable and sharing feelings with a friend. It seems healthy. Hugs for everyone!

Jesse

“I really miss video games.”

DramaQueen

It’s so sweet and sad , I was really afraid Becky would lash out even more but they are talking like friends.

Sky Starlight

I'm not crying, you're crying! 😭

Spartacus

I mean, while I didn't have a crisis of faith about it, COVID was a major disillusioning moment for me where I realized that there is no guarantee that our bodies will be comfortable to exist in. Even though I knew chronic pain was a thing intellectually

Astariel

Aw, Becky. :( Dorothy, hug her!

Sky Starlight

Ruth is gonna give up on femurs?!

Corronchilejano

Mary will be respec... no, I can't do it.

5099 5618 v2.0

This is a tipping of the hand, I think. Is this a thing Becky would say in this kind of a moment? Sure. But there was also a strip where someone challenged whether she (gay person) should be at church, and she responded by telling her the universe sent an actual superhero team her way when she needed it, nevermind she'd found a pretty great lady who legit wanted to both hang out with *and* non-platonically date her. Deity in an Elohim sense or not, the universe/setting clearly *does* love her. But I think she forgets that that love doesn't manifest as satisfied desires and ease of living as much as opportunities to gain XP and a sense of "fitting" in the midst of it all. This seems more like speaking the hypothesis to be disproven aloud, IMHO. I admit I'm biased, but still.

Mariah

I hope all the people who said beckys only issue is that she is horny for joyce and a unsympathetic nice guy feel great right now I really do.

Kazo

Walky goes vegetarian?!

Mariah

they have been so horrible to her I hope they sleep on the wrong side of the bed tonight.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Atariel Difficulty: hug, but don't kiss.

Maude Reads Things

Fuck. Yeah, that's rough. I don't know if I believe in an afterlife or Heaven or whatever, but when I think of my granny who passed away last November or my dead pets or the people I love who are here now but won't be forever, I really want to. If it helps for Becky, at the end of the day, she loved her mom and her mom loved her and nothing can ever change that. It's too late. It happened. And even when a time comes nobody even knows who Becky or her mom was, that will still have been true.

Packy Anderson

I get it, Becky. I miss my Mom, too. At least my Dad only disowned me once my Mom was gone and my sister took control; if he tried to kidnap me and brainwash me, I'd be a mess.

Astariel

@Smoochie - I think if she just said to Dina what she said to Dorothy here, Dina would understand enough.

Maybeeus

...You know i talked a lot about how Becky has a lot of unprocessed grief but i kinda forgot the biggest one of 'em all... Imagining in Dorothy's head she's gotten a prompt to pick between "Comfort her" and "Don't". ...Dorothy is the kinda person who'd get the pacifist ending first try in undertale isn't she?

Logibear

@5099 can you imagine? And then Becky just explodes

Grace Serenity

"Damn you Willis" doesn't just apply to hard unpopular turns in the plot, it also applies to the masterful storytelling and emotional rollercoaster that he is able to create!

Grace Serenity

Oh, Becky... Sweetie, PLEASE get therapy! It's going to be so much easier to process this trauma in your 20s than it will in your 40s, like I'm doing. It's never too late, but you can also not get started soon enough! <3

CoreyWW

Oh yeah, no I totally get it. I do appreciate that like… you can tell there are certain points of the story where the guy like straight up laid his soul BARE about something emotionally honest either with one of the characters or something that’s touched on his own experience, and you can feel it when it happens. That’s not easy to do and the comic gets there HARD sometimes

Tessea

Oh no.... If Dina and Joyce both show up and start crying too, I'll have to take a few days from the comic to walk it off.

Maybeeus

It'd be the perfect callback to the start of The Only Exception and the wrap up of their rivalry.

Jennifer Novelli

I know everyone is rooting for it, but if I were Becky, Dorothy is the last person I'd want a hug from right now.

Logibear

Pretty sure that would be Joyce...

Jennifer Novelli

Eh, being real, I'm sure she'll forgive Joyce way faster than Dorothy. I've never really bought that Becky's one-sided rivalry with Dorothy was "fake" (I also don't buy that they were ever actually friends, but I know I'm in the minority on that one), and while it's awful to be disappointed by someone (Joyce), it's sometimes worse to be proven right about someone (Dotty).

Girlycore

There is no pain in the world like needing your mother and knowing she isn't in the world any more. Knowing you have to face everything without her for the rest of your life is just a special kind of devastating loneliness.

SmurfJuice

Emotional support heaven... hm. Yeah, it scans that the "increase" in mental illness everyone keeps talking about IRL is contemporary with the modern world demolishing the conditions needed to maintain "deeply held beliefs"...

NinjaZaku

Oh this one hurts. I have to imagine admitting this is why she stayed in the church is a painful realization for Becky.

Lea

I'm about five years ahead of my (much younger) brother on the processing childhood trauma journey..mm it I started it in my late thirties/early forties, while he's starting in his early- to mid- twenties. Watching him go through the early stages is heartbreaking (especially in the current state of the world), but SO hopefully it'll be worth it in the long run and he'll have a much better time in his 30s for it.

darklion

Sarah, get in here, we need big sis energy

Shane Wegner

Joyce’s mom is still in the world but would probably lose her mind and disown Joyce over the Smoochin’ Girls stuff. That may actually be a different but equal pain.

Shane Wegner

I’m with you on the pets and was thinking of my special, happy little doggy who died this spring. Accepting the strong possibility his bright, playful, loving personality may well have just been deleted back into the void when he died is definitely a hard part of atheism. I suppose it’s kind of cool some carbon and water ever got to become him for a while at all, but it’s bitter medicine at best.

Shane Wegner

So yeah, there are parts of the atheism that are less fun than the Dina pelvic approval smashes. Dorothy probably has a lot of pent up stress and tears from the whole policy brutality, global injustice, injured Amazi Girl, lost dreams of being POTUS that haven’t actually been worked out. Heck, even kidnapping trauma. That dam could be cracking in the last two panels.

Jasmijn Wellner

Hugs are probably in order right now. I know I want one!

joe mcguire

You’re absolutely not wrong….but if I was her, I wouldn’t want a hug from Joyce or Dorothy….and Dina may not be inclined…so who will hug the poor little Becky 😫

Andrea Andrew

I can relate to this. I grew up Christian, and one of the things that kept me in the faith even after I grew bored of the religion was the idea of seeing my loved ones in the afterlife. Even now, as an agnostic anti-theist, I sometimes want the comfort of some kind of afterlife, even though I know it’s not likely.

Dmitri0240

Becky would want a hug from Joyce more, but probably not for the healthiest reasons. A hug from Dorothy would be less immediately welcome, but would do less harm to her well-being in the long term. Don't get me wrong, there are at least a dozen characters that would be better equipped to be Becky's emotional sounding board than Dorothy, but Joyce isn't one of them. In any case, the best thing for Dorothy to do is wait to see if Becky comes in for a hug. But Dorothy's also in an emotionally heightened state right now, so I'm not going to judge her too harshly if she misreads the room, or simply wants the hug herself.

Fart Captor

If you listen to what she's been telling Dorothy in the last few comics, Becky has already forgiven them both. Or more accurately: her initial, intense emotional reaction to learning about them getting together has passed, and while she's still hurting she understands they did nothing wrong, and she now has enough of a handle on her feelings that she would rather have them around than have them avoid her. They're her friends and she needs them!

Jeremy AR

They will still believe that probably

Jennifer Novelli

As someone who's been through my share of equally intense heartbreaks, I *said* all the mature things about not blaming anyone, and definitely *told myself* I could be the bigger person, but when push came to shove, that went out the door real quick. And I was a hardened war veteran, not a scared kid like Becky.

Mariah

"I know becky had to live through her mothers suicide her father kidnapping her and also dying her friends and perception of god abandoning her but I still think she has abuser energy is the same as andrew tate and maybe hitler sorry not sorry"

Mitzi B.

Gotta say Dorothy is being a pretty good friend here, hearing Becky out and letting her get deep into what's upset her.
