@David M Willis: That's a valid reason, but also, I like to think of chalkboards in classrooms as one of those things that should remain the same in fiction even if that's not how the world looks anymore. Like the classic toys in Santa Claus's sleigh instead of, say, video games, and also like tourists having big cameras instead of snapping photos with their phones.

@tifani: I've always loved that Joyce invited Roz to her dorm party even after Roz laid into her in Leslie's class, because she knows she can trust Roz to be honest with her even when it hurts. I agree they should interact more, and I hope that at the very least we see more of this class.

I think what happened was she called Anna and Mindy answered the phone which makes me think Anna handed Mindy the phone when she saw Leslie was calling because she’s dodging Leslie’s calls.

Leslie almost certainly called Anna's cellphone, which Mindy normally wouldn't pick up because people tend to keep their cellphones near themselves. So it's likely Anna left her cellphone at home when she went somewhere, just as Joyce and Dorothy did when attending the protest. That's as far as I'm willing to extrapolate here. Once again, our author raises a mystery in passing.

Panel 1 frames just the three characters remaining in the conversation. The two subsequent Leslie/Dorothy panels use foreshortening that makes Dorothy take up less screen space than Leslie: the artist has chosen to emphasize Leslie, or wants to narrow the panel to make room for the Roz/Joyce joke, or both. The Roz/Joyce joke that provides the punch-panel is a good use of widening the frame to reveal something funny. Interleaving the progressive reveal with commentary from the remote conversation provides a lot of the comedy here.

I really think this situation is going to reveal that Anna is actually over this relationship. What it looks like happened is that Anna either left her phone and Mindy answered because she saw it was Leslie calling and knowing Leslie was at the protest and then disappeared for two days she might have wanted to know if Leslie was okay if Anna wasn’t saying anything or Anna saw that it was Leslie calling and didn’t want to answer and handed the phone to Mindy so she’d be the one to have the uncomfortable conversation and then when Mindy was like “She’s in jail.” Anna was like, “I can’t deal with this right now.” Because some people are not good with the difficult shit. She might have seen it as this is a situation Leslie got herself into so Leslie has to get herself out of it. Which is a pov she’s allowed but the problem comes when she doesn’t bother communicating that. So that’s why Leslie doesn’t know what happened.

She’s actually pretty impressive when you think about it. She’s substituted this class with no warning successfully in the past and if she and Joyce can keep it together then she will have managed it twice in less than a year. I think becoming a professor is something she should consider as a future career. As annoyed as Leslie might be about it she’s proven herself to be very capable.

If I was Roz and I knew about Leslie’s reaction to the idea of me substitute teaching her class I’d be like “What the fuck do you mean ‘she isn’t’ this is the second time I will have covered your class at the drop of a hat because you decided to get caught up in something else. The correct response is thank you.” It’s like Leslie is determined to underestimate this kid just because she’s got a difficult personality and has annoyed her in the past and she’s a Desanto. She’s half your age Leslie. She’s the student. You’re the teacher and you’re wasting an opportunity to help a promising student reach their full potential. Get over yourself.
