Jim Avery

Raidah is pretty invested in sucking, huh

Fart Captor

STINKY. BAD. STINKY STINKY STINKY

tifani

Raidah is making an actual friend and she hates that for herself.

Grace Serenity

Yeah, I'm sure having Robin in your debt will REALLY help you in the future... /s

ArdieBea

Lovely to see clearly that Raidah is still the same person.

Morgan Byrd

She continues to be the worst

AE Gonzalez

Weird way to cope, Raidah.

Railway Series Book Club

feel like raidah's overestimating the political value of robin, considering she couldn't even organize her own bail

DramaQueen

I’m sure Dorothy really got the warm and fuzzies from talking to you, social climber extraordinaire. She’s talking in polite formalities with her face turned away and is probably calculating exactly what she’ll have to do to feel she’s paid back the obligation.

Logibear

No, Raidah! You only talk out loud about your nefarious scheme when you are on the precipice of victory and Dorothy is at her lowest. You can't just go around giving away the game like that, its almost like you aren't even committing to your role as a villain.

Railway Series Book Club

anyway i love this strip and i'm very glad that today i have more thoughts to vocalize than just "i love this" strip's just really good right now!

Rich Holmes

Oh yes, Robin DeSanto, quite the acquisition there, Raidah. Hope she sparks joy for you.

HenryVolt

This is a fun dynamic, Raidah is shutting down any inclination that the two of them were true Allies at any point, as she should. "Don't get it twisted, I did this for me and me alone. I have no intention of being your friend."

Logibear

"...It's not like I like you or anything"

GundamBradley

I love that Raidah's in a position where she is disdainful, but also in a position where this is still to her benefit, potentially. She has to pinch her nose and gobble this opportunity up.

Logibear

Lets be fair, she hasn't come to campus with a gun or killed anyone yet, so we have a way to go before she's the worst... though both of them are dead now, so maybe she is by default

Harold

Did... did Dorothy just thank Raidah for offhandedly crushing her presidential dreams? I mean, she's not *wrong*, that *was* a pivotal moment for Dorothy, but, wow.

tifani

Guys Raidah is putting up emotional walls here. The take away from this whole situation is that whatever the motivations were for why she did a good thing the fact is that she did a good thing and however she’s going to spin it to work for her carefully crafted persona that’s how she’s going to spin it. Dorothy is also someone who does the right thing for potential career advancement (or she was until very recently) and as a result if she were honest about that is more capable of understanding Raidah than most. These two are both more similar than they are different just like we’re seeing with Roz and Joyce. What we’re being given examples of is Joyce and Dorothy both being presented with people who could turn into very important friendships for each other. I am begging you guys to stop writing off Raidah as a one note villian. She is objectively one of the most interesting characters Willis is writing right now.

Gale Tazzin

how does this even spite Sarah. and Robin's support means a lot less now anyway, and Dorothy will still be suspicious of her. i feel like Raidah is just monologuing for her own conscience so she can pretend she's being self-serving

C

This is some level of spite to be running on.

Sajuuk-Khar

“but I don’t WANT to feel good! I want to feel EEEEVIL!”

GundamBradley

Unironically yeah, probably quite an acquisition. This whole event is probably only further presenting her as an iconoclast to increasingly jaded leftists who are sick of the status quo, the same thing that meant she was in a position where she was pulling both the democrat and republican candidates leftwards to compete with Becky's guidance on policies to run on. This arrest is probably going to be getting her buzz again, so yeah, she might not be the worst potential acquaintance for Raidah's social climbing.

Harold

@C: Raidah guzzles two liters of spite every day

Joe Crow - Words & Pictures

Raidah appears to view every interaction as a transaction, and if she can’t see a way to profit from it, she’ll drop you like a stone. I get the strong impression that if she was white and non-Muslim, she’d be out there supporting the cops and snitching on the protesters.

C

Definitely not Diet Spite.

Gale Tazzin

Raidah: "this will give me a chance to betray Dorothy later! she'll never suspect!" Raidah twenty minutes ago to Dorothy's face: "YES MUAHAHA YES! A CHANCE TO BE EVIL! I WILL DO ANYTHING FOR SPITE"

tifani

You are grossly oversimplifying her.

Harold

I mean, if Dorothy wasn't with Joyce, there's a whole subgenre of romance novels that start more or less like this

GundamBradley

I imagine a lot of this just rolls off of Dorothy's back right now. Raidah could previously get under her skin, but a lot has happened in a few days' time, and Dorothy's already had to confront her previous hypocrisy and cowardice, and I think Raidah's barbs aren't able to find the same sort of purchase they once did in Dorothy's conscience and ego.

Dan Rabin

See next Kickstarter for aloof/arms-crossed/frowning 3D Raidah figurine! She has just one pose, but it's a doozy! As seen on the World Wide Web! I confess to having seen a possibility for change in Raidah, and it now looks as if that door is open a teensy bit. And the idea of Robin staying put even in a metaphorical pocket is hilarious, even if there's a candy factory in there.

Sajuuk-Khar

Well, I mean, there’s still time for Raidah to go to Sarah and make a huge stupid deal about it in public, even if that seems really off-brand

Dan Rabin

Harold: I 2000 cc what you did there.

tifani

Look at her face and look at her body language and focus less on the words and maybe you’ll get some insight on who this character actually is.

Dan Rabin

Yes, of course. IMHO that's the point of the strip.

Astariel

Ugh, she is the worst. Just the worst.

Logibear

I mean, even with them still together, I'm sure some people could write a few pages about the situation

Dan Rabin

I think Dorothy has now found her feet again and re-adopted parts of Old Dorothy that served her well.

EnterTheHero

What a bitch. No, wait. That’s an insult to bitches. I need a worse word for her.

The Axolartl

Yeah Raidah, we all believe that you did this because you wanted Robin, former Republican congresswoman whose political career is dead in the water, in your pocket. Like overestimating the degree to which Sarah cares about bailing out professors for classes she does not take, let alone about Raidah doing it instead, aside, this is not a social networking gain for Raidah, or if it is it's because she now has another way to potentially get those mafia connections she wanted through Becky and Dorothy's connection to Amazigirl (or, she would if she or anyone in this panel was aware that was a possibility, which they are not). She didn't even get volunteer hours for this from the university, she just did a genuine (ish?) act of kindness and is trying to "its not like I like you or anything, b-baka" her way out of it. And I love that for her.

Irene Knapp

yeah this is where I'm at. she's trying hard to be mean-spirited about it but it just doesn't really work as an explanation.

Astariel

I have no doubt at all about that.

Irene Knapp

ah! thanks! I was trying to remember what that was about

Astariel

Sarah actually is in Robin's class.

tifani

She’s awesome, actually.

Sajuuk-Khar

IN A WORLD WHERE RAIDAH TRIED TO CALL IN THIS FAVOR: Raidah: I got you out of JAIL! You OWE me! Robin: I don’t even know who you are. Raidah: … Robin: Ha! See, that’s a Thanos line, from Endgame, right? But seriously, I got no idea who y’are.

tifani

Raidah is brilliant and Raidah is capable. Raidah is also a woman and a Muslim and knows fully well that no matter how obviously brilliant and obviously capable she is she will not only often be underestimated but the farther up she gets people will try to destroy her. Someone soft and gentle and unwilling to do what it takes and unwilling to know how to get favors is not going to survive in the circles she intends to enter. Her goals though are for societal good. So when call d k. To use her connections to get someone out of jail whose rights have been violated she gets that done. Why the fuck does it actually matter if she has ways that it will also benefit her? That’s called a win win. She’s not a saint. She never claimed to be but what she is is a vey useful ally to have. But to make herself this useful she had to sacrifice a lot of softness. And she might have unintentionally picked some back up just by Dorothy saying thank you and meaning it.

Simon Magid

I am willing to forgive Raidah a lot for wanting to help actual protesters. Not everything, maybe, but she is still a long way ahead of Mary and Carol.

The Axolartl

Like I'm not even sure if she realized that she just did something for reasons other than pure social ladder climbing until this moment. And she can't even say Dorothy is just doing a kill them with kindness thing to get under her skin, this is just how Dorothy is and she knows it.

Railway Series Book Club

yeah, all the very full-throated "FUCK YOU RAIDAH"s in this comment section are perplexing me bc like... she's being so tsundere about her own premise here that it feels like she did nothing to warrant it?

Harold

Raidah Rasheed, they could never make me hate you more than Mary Bradford

Sajuuk-Khar

Raidah: Just wait, Carl. Now that Dorothy thinks we’re birds of a feather, the wheels have begun to turn! It’s only a matter of time before I can turn her feeble-minded white girl loyalty towards the TRUE purpose of our ULTIMATE JUSTICE. And THEN, when Keener is under MY thumb, SARAH will be EXPELLED! MUAHAHAHAHAAAA! Carl: What? Sorry, I wasn’t listening, I was posting this comment about how video games have become woke.

Sajuuk-Khar

I understand the kind of casual disgusted “fuck you, Raidah” because she’s being stinky and i n s u f f e r a b l e, but there’s some vitriol that’s making my eyebrows skyrocket

Beck Chonigman

Now THIS is interesting. Raidah seems like she's trying to convince Herself that this was purely for beneficial gain. But here's the thing Raidah. Having a positive impact creates good no matter what the motivation. Whether you intended to help Dorothy or not, you still helped her.

Joe360

"It's not like I like you or anything! Baka!"

Maude Reads Things

Sure, Raidah. *I* believe it was all self-interested motivations. Totally. She may not have a good bone in her body but I will continue to argue she has some good internal organs. Like her spleen. She has a very kind spleen.

The Axolartl

Damn is she? I totally forgot lmao

Astariel

@QueenofSodor - Like the whole last panel? There's the gratuitous shot at Sarah, but especially the gloating over making Dorothy think she's an potential ally. I don't see any reason for her to be doing that if she wasn't planning to use it to stab her in the back at the most painful possible moment.

Tessea

Can't be magnanimous in the slightest. I have more hope for Raidah than Mary, but damn she makes it hard to root for her.

HenryVolt

Getting arrested helped Bernie Sanders credibility when he got roughed up in the streets by cops over protesting rent price discrimination against black folk.

The Axolartl

I mean, we'll see, but I think a lot of people are putting way more weight on Raidah calling her and Dorothy allies than is necessary. Like I think the most Dorothy has internalized here is stuff like "Raidah is ultimately doing the same 'depersonalize all relationships' thing Sarah is just in a different way" which is true, and "Raidah and I can potentially work together despite our differences to achieve common political goals" which is ostensibly the dynamic that Dorothy's entire career goal was meant to achieve. You can't stab someone in the back unless you keep them in stabbing range, and Raidah makes too many snap judgments based on single instances of slight to moderate conflict to really... Deliberately keep someone close enough to do that. Drop her like Billie maybe, but Dorothy isn't exactly as desperate for social status or friends as Billie is.

Shane Wegner

“B-baka, it’s not like I WANT to help you, it’s just convenient to my master plans!”

Shane Wegner

Raidah’s goal (vendetta)[jihad? To Raidah it has overtones of righteous vengeance] of crushing Sarah has zero to do with the public good and actively wastes energy that could be better spent actually doing good.

Shane Wegner

“Haha Sarah! I now have a washed-up former congressperson, who is currently banned from campus like a petty shoplifter, who might or might not even remember my name! What do you have?” “The rock-hard and highly motivated son of one of the Deans in his political prime.”

Shane Wegner

“It led to the more realistic and near-term satisfaction of Joyce sexy times!”

Shane Wegner

Reminds me of that Family Guy-Road Runner parody where Wile E actually gets a lucky kill on the Roadrunner. After cooking and eating his foe, savoring his victory for a brief moment, he quickly realizes he has nothing left to live for and spirals into death by suicide. That’s too grimdark to be an exact parallel to Raidah, but what is WITH this Sarah obsession? Raidah needs some better hobbies.

Lazuli

maybe if she says it a third time shell believe shes not helping

Lazuli

sure. raidah. whatever you say.

C.T. Phipps

An interesting angle to Raidah: she thinks she's a mastermind and boss but is actually just a normal person. Like Dorothy thinks she's a genius politician (or did).

Siberian Rabbit

I think I missed some developments in the discourse, why are so many people being like "aw she's being so tsundere"? Even assuming that the last panel is fully hogwash instead of partially hogwash, *surely* if there's anyone that this random act of kindness is directed to it's Leslie and Robin rather than Dorothy, right? Why would she have any affection or good will towards her? I don't think that people were like this when she invited Walky to lunch, and she has since gained *more* reasons to dislike her and her whole social circle.

Jennifer Novelli

Because no one (speaking broadly) likes the idea that the protagonist won't eventually becomes friends with every non-antagonist. Look at how shocking it was in It's Walky! when Sarah was the one who led the charge against SEMME.

Jennifer Novelli

Ah, Raidah. Lately, you've been what's keeping me coming back!

I Know Why the Mowed Lawn Screams

idk about broadly, but just speaking for myself it’s the triple combo of her saying all of this out loud to herself in the last two panels like some kind of dork that reads like a classic tsundere-style gag, the parallels to similar character beats from characters like Sarah, Jennifer, etc suggesting that there’s an level of performance and denial to her overall persona on that could be explored in the future, and wanting to post something fun and silly because Raidah is a character i genuinely enjoy and it fucking sucks when the comments section is 95% venomous hate whenever she’s on screen

Joshua MacDougall

I can’t stand Raidah, definitely used to know people like her who only saw people and relationships as tools to get what they want. The worst.

Jasmijn Wellner

a yandere but for friendship put that shit right into my veins

Jasmijn Wellner

or is it tsundere? i might be getting my anime terms mixed up

Rob McBobson

If I were in Willis's shoes, I'd write an arc where, for selfish purposes, Raidah saves a hundred children from certain, painful death and finds good, loving homes for a hundred rescue kittens and puppies, just so I could see people say how that, too, is proof of how evil Raidah is. :) (Yeah, yeah, I know, but I had to say it.)

thejeff

You have to assume those goals are for societal good though and that's resting on very scanty evidence. As Shane says the vendetta against Sarah certainly isn't a societal good and while she says she's doing this to help actual protesters, she also says "put a former congresswoman in my pocket". Which of those is the actual goal?

thejeff

Of course, if Raidah were actually as good at and as devoted towards building connections as she says, she wouldn't tell Dorothy that.

thejeff

Sanders was an entirely different person and that was an entirely different time.

thejeff

Maybe, but Robin has a tendency to land on her feet. She would have won the race if she hadn't withdrawn (admittedly only on a sympathy vote for her campaign manager being kidnapped). She then stumbled into a professor's job.

Harold

@Rob McBobson: She finds a forever home for Snoop, just to spite Joyce

Harold

@Shane Wegner: Could you maybe delete that one word from your comment, pleasethankyou

tifani

@shanewagner @thejeff it’s a mixed bag but we know her politics are leftist so overall they will end up being for societal good. As for the Sarah thing I don’t even include that. It’s the the kind of petty shit teenagers get involved in all the time where there are certain people you just don’t like. They’re not required to like each other. In her mind though Raidah does feel like her vendetta is justified with the Dana thing and also Sarah actively setting Joyce in motion to steal Jacob and Sarah feels her own hatred for Raidah is justified as a result. They can make peace about it or not. But the Sarah thing to me isn’t even really a factor in how I feel about Raidah overall. Those two seem evenly matched and when it comes down to it I think they’ll have to come to some kind of mutual understanding eventually. Also I think you guys have got to accept that I don’t really care if Raidah decides to do this and use these things to social climb later because ultimately as long as something good happens I don’t really care if the person doing it also benefits socially from it. I’m not Rachel. I’m not sure what you guys think Raidah’s goals are but I don’t really think having Robin “in her pocket” is that much of a boon and she knows it. A disgraced former congresswoman who is now on leave from her university job indefinitely and needed a teen to get her out of jail? Robin doesn’t scream assert. I think everything Raidah is saying her is just her spinning to help keep up the reputation she and have everyone not look to closely and just write her off as an opportunist. It’s working beautifully in these comments. Because there’s a comfort in hiding behind no one really knowing your actual feelings.

tifani

Exactly! Thank you! Nice to know other people don’t buy the act.

Jennifer Novelli

People here seem to feel about Raidah the way I feel about Sarah 99% of the time. I think the issue might be that the narrative (by necessity) has to frame someone as being in the wrong, but doesn't have them actually do anything wrong. Videl's earlier appearances in DBZ spring to mind.

Jennifer Novelli

Why should she be magnanimous? Dorothy is not her friend, and Raidah's helping for reasons that have nothing to do with her.

The Balloon Animal

Raidah is in her own comic strip, we just get glimpses of the crossovers

Tessea

This is what I mean, though. She can't be bothered to muster a polite, or even performative 'you're welcome'. Raidah seems to _want_ to feel persecuted so she can stay angry at people.

Mitzi B.

I, for my part, wish that Patreon had the bongo filter

Dmitri0240

If she weren't Muslim, I think she'd be viewed with exactly the same degree of unapologetic vitriol as Mary is. Living in a pervasively Islamophobic society like the US, I can understand the impulse to be careful and make sure one isn't perpetuating that hatred. But at a certain point, one can bend over backwards so far to give someone so many chances, that it just becomes a different flavor of depersonalizing and stereotyping. Raidah sucks. But if she plays her cards right, she could become precisely the sort of excruciating person who does a lot of good for all of the wrong reasons that I all too often end up voting for. And personally, I find that more compelling than if she were to have her personality retconned in the name of being "good representation".

Harold

@Mitzi B.: We got muddy water, we one bongo filter

Rob McBobson

@Jennifer Novelly: Could you elaborate on that Videl thing? It's been decades since I finished that manga.

Alexandra Falk

This is lampshade amounts of self-awareness about scheming, Raidah.

Jennifer Novelli

When Gohan started doing the Great Saiyaa Man thing, Videl, Satan City's then-only super martial artist thought he was secretly a villain and kept trying to fight him. That eventually pivoted into a love story, but for a while she was minor antagonist.

T Campbell

I'm still salty about Raidah's power-corrupts philosophy in the strip this installment is referencing, and I'm none too thrilled to see Dorothy thanking her for kicking her in the teeth, but I sure can't argue it's out of character. With luck, Dorothy, someday you'll be able to surround yourself with people who've REALLY got your back. You're off to a good start, there. Raidah has been a useful ally today, but she is NOT your friend.
