Joe Rosenthal, Love Detective is on the case

Mitzi B.

Neurotypical Joe, we call him

Kiri Blackthorn

"oh good, nobody understands this stuff. so it's not just me."

Omnithea

Oh this is going to be a fun clash of the wills.

Corronchilejano

Jokes are appropriate lies told to others. They're not jokes when you lie to yourself.

SmurfJuice

Dina is so many people in my social circle...

Harold

"I am *not* doubling down! And how *dare* you call me a neurotypical! You take that back!"

Logibear

You can (not) be dumped

Harold

@Logibear: The *real* Lesbian Love Sleuth

Railway Series Book Club

he should take on the Lesbian Love Sleuth moniker so that one day he too may become a wonderful sapphic like Joyce

Dan Rabin

That's *Lesbian* Love Detective! (as in the lovers not the detective) :-).

Astariel

Interesting that this, out of everything that's happened in the last couple days, is what gets Joe angry. I'm not sure what he's basing it on, but I like seeing it. ETA: I should clarify that I'm not sure what he's basing his certainty about Becky's feelings on. I get why he's angry.

Gale Tazzin

whatever comfy chair in the biology library is nearest the shelf with the dinosaur books

Sajuuk-Khar

Dina, your first mistake was thinking Becky’s neurological pathways and experiences are at all normal or 100% honest or not marinated in trauma sauce

C

Joe going to help save Becky/Dina, while also finally talking to Joyce about the potential poly romance. But since Joe does both at the same time, it ends on a Becky/Dina/Joe/Joyce/Dorothy poly relationship (with dedicated chart designed by Dina and Dorothy to work out the exact dynamics and comfort levels of everyone involved with every possible pairing).

I hope Jakey grows past the first stage of grief

"I can't carry my own relationship through this, but I can carry yours!“ —Joewise Gamthal

HenryVolt

This all really hinges on everyone thinking "Becky once said Dina a proof that there is a God and now she said there isn't because Joyce is gay for someone that's not her"...I still say there's something deeper to it than that and Becky's just choosing to shut down rather than elaborate, but whatever.

MST3K.fan: The Cheesy Movie Essays

I thought Becks just admitted to Leslie that she was telling the truth. Is she lying to herself and only Joe has figured it out? Did Becky subconsciously figure that she doesn’t deserve to be happy and therefore she sabotaged her relationship with Dina?

Logibear

*chanting intensifies* fuck pile. fuck pile. fuck pile

Gale Tazzin

Joe fundamentally believes that things can be fixed. It's how he fixed himself, after all, and it drew him to Joyce. It checks out that he's upset one of his most rational friends is being pessimistic about a situation he's getting through by telling himself everything's alright.

Fart Captor

He's wrong about Becky meaning it but he's 100% right that Dina should ignore it 😤

Dan Rabin

The initial panel re-established the considerable height difference, but the conversation continues with their heads on the same level. Dina's eyes look forward as she asks her question, but she averts them for the rest of the strip. Amber has taught her about eye contact, but she's both under stress and thinking about things. Dina also raises a curled forefinger to her mouth as she states her result of processing Joe's reply. Joe's head is tilted to the left as he initially expresses puzzlement at Dina's question, but it tilts to the right as he asserts his response and returns to an upright and locked position as he "doubles down". It occurs to me that Dina is also worried about Amber not being in the room. In the strip where she returns to their room (https://www.dumbingofage.com/2026/comic/book-16/02-im-the-problem-its-me/raptordown/) she *first* looks over at Amber's bed, *then* down at the wreckage of the dinosaur bed. But she can't talk to Joe about Amber being Amazi-Girl. This brings up a bit of character status I haven't been tracking carefully: although I try to keep track of who knows about A/A-G, I *haven't* been tracking each such character's knowledge of who else knows. For example, the kidnapping victims all know that they all know, but who knows that Ruth knows?

Katrina Marie Paton

I really do feel Dina is drawing the correct conclusions here.

Tessea

Exactly. That's just how it looks to me. Becky took a massive hit to her sense of self worth and the intrusive thoughts have her thinking that she wasn't deserving of anyone.

Tessea

Dina seems to take such statements as literal. I don't think she really gets the idea of overemotional outbursts/shutdowns, so until proven otherwise, Becky's words are fact to Dina.

Jens H. (Nethead Jay)

I'm not that surprised. And I think (and hope) both Dina will be learning some things from this conversation.

HenryVolt

You're right, this is why Becky needs to elaborate. But for some reason when someone presses the matter her response is "forget I said anything," which is a mistake that's costing her.

David Jackson

Shouldn't it be "she would not" / "wouldn't" instead of "does not" /"doesn't?" To match Dina's tense, I mean.

Fart Captor

With estrogen it is possible to do both

Dan Rabin

Only one truth, there is not.

Cromalin

no, joe is saying that becky doesn't prefer joyce to dina, not that she wouldn't say anything like that

Tessea

Joe's stating what he sees as a definitive, not as a comparison. He's defying Dina's wording, not agreeing with it.

Tessea

Becky took a huge hit to her self-esteem. It was her feelings of abandonment resurfacing when she last spoke to Dina. She didn't feel worth _anyone's_ attention/affection, and Dina took it literally instead of a cry for help and support. I don't think Dina really understands the idea of emotional outbursts/shutdowns, combined with her issues with hyperbole she just takes what Becky tells her at face value. But seeing how much Joe has grown since the beginning of the comic, I think he really might be one of the best people to talk to her. He gets Dina in his own way. Obligatory greetings and such. He's not going to be joking/snarky/sarcastic about things as many of the others might be, even if they don't mean to be. I think Joe knows how to approach Dina in a way she'll understand and hopefully accept. But Becky really needs to make the effort to talk things out with Dina one way or another or Dina will never get past that doubt.

Tessea

I'm clearly missing something. I saw 'jakey' referenced on the main site as well, but I'm not understanding ^_^;

Samel da Camel

I think it's from the tumblr meme "I hope jakey dies". (Basically, there was a post saying "i wish these people were oppressed" and there is a drawing of a couple labeled "tall calm boyfriend" and "short anxious girlfriend who can't order her own food". Then they comment: stop tagging this saying shit like "me and jakey!!! 🥺" Then someone says "i hope jakey dies" and now its a meme.) Joe/Joyce are kind of a "me and jakey!!! 🥺" ship, in contrast to Joyce/Dorothy.

Shane Wegner

Becky wantED, past tense, Joyce a lot. Joyce didn’t and doesn’t feel the same. Maybe present Becky still has some amount of torch for present-Joyce. That’s not proof that present-Becky can’t like and be liked by Dina, a lot. Both can be true at the same time, humans are complicated like that.

Shane Wegner

“My mom saw how broken and unlovable I am at the molecular level and had no choice but to leave the earth, of course Joyce doesn’t like me either!” ::newspaper and spray bottle:: “No! That’s not how that works! Your mom’s mental health issues and your loveability as a human aren’t actually linked!”

Rob McBobson

Don't you DARE give me hope, Willis. :(

5099 5618 v2.0

@C Sometimes it sucks to be right too early. Ask Becky. She has some rather vivid experiences with that position, lately.

NinjaZaku

The verbiage Dina's using is more cynical than usual. It's subtle, but you can tell this really is affecting her. I hope what Joe's gonna say helps her out. I really do.

Terra Bruder

Emotional Intelligence Joe was not on my mid decade bingo card, and yet he comes back with every stick Willis throws. I want to be very clear that, despite my vehement defense of the-girls-who-would-have-gayed-sooner-if-not-for-comphet, I'm very happy about this development for Joe and those things aren't mutually exclusive.

Julian Williams

I read the comic once, then paused, then went, "Is.... is he talking about Joyce and himself here....?"

Joseph

It’s interesting that Joe wants Dina to fight for her and Becky’s relationship but he’s not fighting for his and Joyce’s relationship.

Girlycore

"For some reason" here likely meaning: she grew up in a cult with an abusive father, the chances it has ever been Safe for her to have emotional outbursts or discuss unfair/uncomfortable feelings is a big ol' goose egg.

Girlycore

She "does not" prefer Joyce over Dina rather than she "would not" or "did not" say that

Harold

@Jasmijn Wellner: Joyce's, too!

Joey245

"So your coping method is self-deception. This explains a lot about neurotypicals." DINA THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A SAD STORYLINE YOU CAN"T MAKE ME GIGGLESNORT LIKE THIS

Packy Anderson

He is fighting: he offered Joyce the only option he COULD while still respecting Joyce's agency in the whole matter. Dina does have more options than Joe, because Becky isn't deciding to break up with Dina to pursue another person.

wyatt

the Rosenthal Saruyama Alliance is now the strongest force in the comic

joe mcguire

Oh! Is this where we see that Dina doesn’t have a flawless perception of herself and others and even she benefits from outside perspective sometimes? I hope so.

Harold

@wyatt: Rivaled only by the Brown-Keener Tumescence

Harold

@Tessea: Not only does Joe get Dina, I think he gets *Becky* too, although in her case it might be secondhand via how well he's gotten to know Joyce. Joyce and Becky have very different personalities, but they grew up in the same environment and have both been doing a lot of (often erratic) unpacking of everything they've internalized, and Joe is perfectly positioned to help walk Dina through understanding that.

CoreyWW

Man, just talk to the people you both have unclear relationships with to get some clarification on what’s going on instead of writing headcanons about it.

CoreyWW

Also, Joe, be a good host and offer Dina a slice of that pizza you were waiting for while you were masterbating in that bonus comic

CoreyWW

I mean wash your hands first of course, but you know, be neighborly!

Tessea

Thank you!

Tessea

Clash of the Willis

Tessea

Sadly it's never really that easy for most people. Fear of rejection kills a lot of will to do just that. Also in Dina's case she's assuming Becky already gave her clarification. Dina just doesn't get that Becky's brain wasn't firing on all cylinders that day.

Harold

Maude Reads Things

Joe believes in love! He doesn't wanna but he does. Dina, I don't think that's QUITE it with Becky but uh. Becky did not do a great job beating that allegation with how she acted earlier no.
