Oh, the hater thread is gonna be WILDING on this one xD

Joyce + Dina Autism to Autism communication.

tifani

The drama edging has just gotten ridiculous at this point.

SHE DOESN'T HAVE HER PRIORITIES STRAIGHT* *BECAUSE THEY'RE GAY, YOU SEE

Dan Rabin

Joe reboots Joyce with a hand-greeting and a smile; Joyce responds with a hand and her trademark smile. They raised their respective dominant hands, if that means anything. Joe keeps smiling, having obtained Joyce's promise to talk. And for the punch, Joyce returns to her intended business with Dina.

Megh

man, i can't wait for joyce to not only fail at getting becky and dina back together, but to actively fuck up and make it less likely

Harold

Dumbing of Age, Book 16: NOTE THE EMPHATICALITYNESS!

Harold

"-expialidocious!"

Logibear

S'all good. Joe's there to finish the alley oop.

tifani

But I’m also not even actually mad at Joyce. This is just the 8000th time we’ve been teased an actual big reaction only to have everyone be annoyingly chill about the whole thing. I’m also just not as interested in Joyce trying to talk to Dina as I am in her having the conversation with Joe I’ve been waiting on for literal months now.

Harold

I mean, in fairness, Joe seems to be very understanding about this delay, to a ridiculously otherworldly degree

Jennifer Novelli

@tifani It's verging on late-era Monday Nitro territory.

Buck Caldwell

I've been reading this comic almost since it started, and went back and read the two predecessors, and I *STILL* can't keep myself from hearing "Dye-na" whenever I come across "Dina" in the strip. I know it's pronounced "Deena", it's just, the "names" database in my brain is corrupted. I have the hardest time putting names to faces unless I've known someone for 20 years. Sorry, names.db is read-only and cannot be repaired.

Logibear

There was like 100 ways this could have gone with either Joe or Joyce burning the whole thing to the ground out of spite or hurt. But honestly, both of them taking a kinder, softer approach to whatever they're currently in is something the world needs more of.

tifani

Like seriously this is what happens? Let’s put this convo on hold YET AGAIN to devote time to this other thing for another month. Why does Joyce have to be the one to talk to Dina about this? Why is this direction the more important one right now?

Harold

Joycelander II: The HOMPK!ening

Logibear

I have always thought 'Dye-na' because of "Dinosaur" it would take literal deprogramming to get me to get that phonetically correct now.

Dye-na the Barneysaur

I Know Why the Mowed Lawn Screams

the part of me that wanted a really sad and messy post-reveal cheating storyline keeps getting smaller and smaller as it gets smothered by a bigger part of me who finds the incredibly absurd and also wildly sincere “my girlfriend cheating on me is awesome” demeanor of joe funnier and and funnier

Fart Captor

SHE'S bi, but her current priority is gay because it's Becky

I Know Why the Mowed Lawn Screams

ok that might be a glib and inaccurate description of the strip on a second read through but oh my god. cannot emphasize how loudly I laughed when this dropped

Harrison Fuller

Honestly props for both of them for being able to acknowledge a need to talk. Very healthy of them. Shows their character development.

tifani

Look I don’t even want some kind of fight Joe has proven he is the most emotionally mature and understanding eighteen year old boy on the planet. I just want the poly talk. I just want Joyce, Joe, and Dorothy navigating that situation and also I want to be free of the prison of waiting for it. Once they have the conversation I can stop waiting for them to have the conversation.

tifani

And THEN Joe/Joyce/Dorothy threesome.

Sajuuk-Khar

I love how this actually parallels her mental gamification of the scenario

tifani

He is A PRINCE AMONG MEN. GIVE HIM A THREESOME ABOUT IT.

Samel da Camel

I know it's pronounced Dina because of TLOU2 but that exposes me as only a recent fan

tifani

Well you got me there.

Astariel

Aw, that was good communication between Joyce and Joe. I'm glad to see them both being mature about this. I also like Dina being impressed by Joyce here.

Mariah

I feel that willis has no desire to give the "fire and brimstone" part of the fanbase what they want and I respect him for that.

I Know Why the Mowed Lawn Screams

@tifani I just think on the whole I have a very different way I want the Poly!Joe stuff to go than you do, but re: wanting that talk to happen, that’s honestly more than fair !! It’s been on the back burner for a hot minute now, and even though I’m not as invested as I am with a few of the other storylines playing out ATM, I still want to see a serious resolution/escalation of the poly storyline happen sooner instead of later. I’m just mainly taking the piss outta myself for expecting anything OTHER than patience and understanding from Joe when yesterday’s strip dropped. I could see myself getting frustrated that my expectation for drama is being undercut again, but I’m having more fun choosing to laugh instead of crying, y’know? Think that’s my ultimate takeaway from this.

Mariah

I am so annoyed by them that I hope they never get what they want.

Fart Captor

Megh you have declared yourself my enemy and I will have my revenge

Megh

@FC pistols at dawn or rapiers?

Harold

@Megh: I initially read that as "pistols at dawn or raptors"

Megh

@harold damn raptors at dawn would be awesome

Fart Captor

We fight with swords like proper gay ladies, obviously

generally I am a big believer in the right to be a *hater online, even when I disagree vehemently with whatever the mainsite haters are saying, but I genuinely think the comments section needs to be closed tomorrow. hating is a privilege and I support a mandatory 24hr shutdown period if it means people chilling the fuck out. *hater within a reasonable degree, of course

wrought.thought

If you told me like a decade ago that Joe would become my favorite character I would have thought you have CTE.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Logibear Ah, hell. He threw the spirit bomb.

5099 5618 v2.0

"Well, if it isn't the consequences of my actions. "Two sets of them... "Which to start with..." --Joyce, shortly before the timer for the choice in her head ran out (probably)

5099 5618 v2.0

("Joe will remember this. Next shift will be harder")

Tessea

Awwww. I knew Joe would be understanding. He knows Joyce well enough at this point to get that she's ridiculously absentminded when excited/panicking about something. While some people may be expecting him to be pissy and have some sort of temper tantrum, what would that show about him as a character? I'm glad to see him being understanding rather than angry, though I'm sure he will hit a limit eventually. It's only been a day at this point if I'm remembering correctly. I'm also impressed with Joyce not locking up into a loop of excuses and scrambled-werd salad. Both of them handled this moment well and didn't hurt the other. Good for them. Also when did _JOE_ become one of the most emotionally mature characters in the comic?

Maybeeus

I think Joe is pretty well aware that Joyce is probably going to take another year to give a response but i think that's fair with how suddenly Poly has been thrown into Joyce's lap.

Logibear

I would kill for a Dumbing of Age / Dispatch crossover.

Tessea

I had a girlfriend named Deena, so it took a little while to get Dina straight in my head.

Madison

He really worked hard on himself for Joyce, I think, but it’s also helping him to make connections with people other than her so I’m glad he’s collecting dividends.

thejeff

Not necessarily "be pissy and have a temper tantrum", but there's a point where being too understanding is just not standing up for yourself and I'm not sure Joe's on the right side of that line.

CoreyWW

“Dina, have you considered— oh dang I forgot to look that up, hang on….Hey Siri! Search ‘romantic and gay dinosaur facts’” (scrolls) “okay that’s ai…that’s ai… THATS ai…”

CoreyWW

Dina: “…do you need help—“ Joyce: “No no I got it, I got it” Joe: “Try looking for .orgs and .edus” Joyce: “I said I got it, just give me a minute”

Rob McBobson

"Pooh-pooh to the readers!" Dave Willis was humming. "They're finding out now that no big talk is coming! Joe simply says 'hi!' And here's what Joyce will do! She'll talk to li'l DINA a long while, or two, and the DoA readers will all cry boo-hoo!" (Truth be told, I enjoyed this strip a lot, but the parody verse was too obvious not to write down!)

Harold

@CoreyWW: Dina: "No, when I said 'do you need help' I did not mean with this specific task, I meant in general"

Harold

I hope Hatekey dies

tifani

Okay after being given a day to think on it I think I get why Willis is having Joyce have this conversation right now with Dina and I am now okay with what is happening. But I am not gonna elaborate further because there’s really no point in speculating out loud. Willis is gonna do what Willis is gonna do. I take that as a promise and a threat.

Tessea

Oh I agree. But remember that from his viewpoint it's only been a day or so and he WANTS to make it work. But too much longer and he may start to give up and feel ignored. I can't see Joe willingly becoming a doormat.

Mitzi B.

Dina, you may need your raptor claw for this upcoming conversation.

Calder Johnson

"Joyce Brown can always be trusted to do the right thing, once all other possibilities have been exhausted" -Winston Churchill (probably)

5099 5618 v2.0

Dina: "Hey Joe, don't be afraid. You were made to go out and get her."

5099 5618 v2.0

Joyce (to Dina): "The minute you let her [1] under your skin, then you begin to make it better!" [1] - Becky

5099 5618 v2.0

@Calder Johnson "God has a special providence for fools, drunkards, and [Joyce Brown]." --also probably Winston Churchill

thejeff

I know. It's not so much that he's not upset she's not ready to talk yet as his whole approach.

Harold

Joyce (to Dorothy): "The movement you need [1] is on your shoulder[s]" [1] - Joyce's legs draped over them

Rob McBobson

Hey, can anybody who dares frequent the main site comments tell me what kind of thing people there expect from tomorrow's strip (that is, the one that we got today)?

Harold

@Rob McBobson: Wailing, rending of garments, gnashing of teeth...

Tim Starliper

I think Joe has grown a lot lately, and the 'new Joe' is what we see here. He is more understanding and it shows in his interaction with Joyce. We also have to keep in mind, while it seems like FOREVER to us, it has not really been that long, in universe (a couple of days?), so while it seems like this has been put off a long time, it really has not.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Harold (/Later) Joyce (to Dorothy): "Why don't we [2] do it in the road?" [2] - [REDACTED]

Johanne

Literally more than twice as long as "emphasis", both in terms of letters and syllables!

NekoIncardine

Joe's level of "gets it" in this situation is powerful.
