5099 5618 v2.0

Well, that cut deeper than I'd expected.

C

Self reflection is always appreciated, as is honesty.

Empress of Robots

It appears that Dina has been reading the comments section the past 6 months lol

Emily Lamont

We know you'd be selfish, you're proving it right now.

Astariel

I like Joyce's honesty in panel 4, and she's totally right in panel 5. The only problem is, it's not really a lack of selfishness on Dina's part that's stopping her and Becky from being together.

Logibear

Dina with the truth bomb that Joyce almost completely fumbles before miraculously recovering. You love to see it. Next scene will either have Dina showing vulnerability, or it will be a completely savage verbal bloodbath.

5099 5618 v2.0

How long before Joyce's emo/goth phase? If she hasn't already discovered [ Panic at the Disco | MCR | Fallout Boy | LARP ], I suspect she'll at least appreciate the resonance.

5099 5618 v2.0

"It's alright, but Disturbed is better. Right, Dad?"

Mark Thompson

realizing you've been selfish is good. and yeah, not wanting her getting together with dorthy to be the reason they broke up is more about her guilt than Dina's feelings, but she's 100% right about how Dina should be selfish too.

Logibear

I do like seeing Joyce saying that she threw "so" much away rather than "too" much. Goes to show that she isn't regretting any of her choices.

Fart Captor

She is! She wants them to think of themselves!

Harrison Fuller

Wait, oof. Joe is there to hear all that

Tim W

So, is Joe still in the room?

5099 5618 v2.0

@Atariel ~There can be miracles when you believe Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill~ -Joyce (reflexively)

5099 5618 v2.0

@Magic Chopstick Games ...at 19 years old?

Packy Anderson

If Dina were being selfish, she'd want a girlfriend who wasn't still in love with someone else.

HenryVolt

I'm still really hoping there's more to Becky giving up on her faith rather than it just being because Joyce is gay for Dorothy and not her...I'm hoping because that being the only reason feels shallow and I'm also wishing for a moment where the world isn't centered around Joyce and Dorothy. Which I think isn't asking for much because I think Joyce and Dorothy themselves wouldn't want other people's relationship to be centered around theirs either.

tifani

That would be so funny actually. Him just politely hanging out in the corner letting them talk.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Tim W And doing his very best "Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park" impression, I assume

Railway Series Book Club

"wow must be awkward for joe hearing that" y'all gotta remember he's still holding onto the poly cope, joyce saying she'd never dump dorothy doesn't necessarily contradict that!

5099 5618 v2.0

@Tim W "[Lesbians] [1], uh...[find] a way..." [1] - Yes, not exactly. I know.

5099 5618 v2.0

@MCG Of course you did. You can borrow my cane if you want something to shake at them from afar, if you'd like.

GundamBradley

I know people are concerned about Joe hearing this, but he wouldn't be hearing one word he didn't already know. I do think Joyce's suggestion isn't a bad one, exactly. Dina can assert herself.

tifani

Remembering that Joe’s problem isn’t the idea of Joyce wanting Dorothy. He just wants to be wanted too. (And he is. I fully believe that. Joyce just can’t seem to take the next step towards realizing she can have him too. It’s like she thinks she can have what she wants to a POINT and that point is forced monogamy but no Joyce you don’t actually have to do that) He fully supports Joyce being selfish. He wants her to have the things she wants. So I don’t imagine if he is lingering off screen hearing all this any of what Joyce says bothers him. He’s canon poly. He just misses her. Just getting to be in the same room with her might be making him feel the best he has in days.

Harold

@Empress of Robots: Except that Dina is acknowledging that the fallout is *inadvertent,* a courteous (and accurate) qualifier that the comments section (main site) would refuse to add.

Dan Rabin

We've seen some recent strips where two-person conversations are shown with alternating shots of the participants, but in this strip the shots of Joyce and Dina together dominate the visual rhythm. Joyce goes through her usual dynamic series of different expressions (including an emphatic forefinger in the center panel), but Dina maintains the same expression throughout. We see her from Joyce's point of view as she delivers her only line; then she just waits for Joyce to finish, with only a slight change to her eyelid in the center panel. Joyce's solo panel is *not* from Dina's point of view: rather, it zooms in on Joyce coming around to a viable message while maintaining the the same position we see her in throughout the strip. Perhaps Dina's patience in listening is part of the pact to be more kind to each other. Joyce's closing line doesn't come from her prepared speech—she seems to have listened to herself reacting ridiculously from her romance-must-win space, and she seems to have found a way out of the thicket of her own bullshit.

Harold

Joe: "Hello, I'm So Much Else"

Harold

Panel 3: Dina wants to bite off that finger so badly

tifani

So anyway the next step is Dina asking how she can be with Becky knowing Becky also loves Joyce and Joyce being like “you can love more than one person at the same time!” And then….realization.

tifani

Actually Joe really should be here for this conversation. I think he knows best exactly what Dina is feeling and he’s actually as good at talking to people as Joyce believes she is. Tag him in Joyce!

Jennifer Novelli

I mean, Dina is *kinda* calling out Joyce's hypocrisy? I hope that's not what we're gonna have to settle for, but for now I'll take it...

Logibear

Yeah, if Dina was being selfish here she'd find herself in the exact same situation she's currently in.

Michael Flannagan

Plot twist: Joe is still standing just behind Dina

tifani

We’d see him. He’s a foot taller than her. He could be leaning casually against the Dino bed though.

Logibear

We'll get to see her response tomorrow. I imagine she'll have words to say.

Jennifer Novelli

I hope so. The other shoe has waiting to drop for months now.

tifani

If this entire storyline has taught us anything it’s that Joe is actually the chillest guy on the planet. Nothing about what Joyce is saying bothers him at all. He is 100% in her corner.

tifani

Honestly just the idea that Joe is off panel and okay with all this makes me a bigger fan of him than I already was. I get that he probably left though but even that is him being supportive and considerate. He’s my favorite guy character and I just want him back in the comic and happy. He’s earned it.

Maude Reads Things

Maybe her selfishness is her wanting her partner to herself. Also...I have felt shitty yesterday and early today so my brain might be foggy but what exactly did Joyce throw away for Dorothy? Her dad wasn't exactly jumping up and down but it didn't go terribly. None of her friends so far have been mad at her - Becky has been sad but she'll get past it I'm sure. Joe already TOLD her she can have them both. The esteem of some of the protesters? Big deal, Joyce has been clear she doesn't give a FUCK about the protest except as her 'heroic' backdrop to make out with Dorothy.

Rob McBobson

I'm assuming that he's still in the room, because otherwise, I think, Willis would have shown him leaving. This conversation is very different if Joe has left, so Willis would have been clear about that. (Or at least that's how I see it.)

Maude Reads Things

Yeah, Joe's been pretty clear he's open to sharing. This is pretty much what he offered Joyce already. I do have concerns about how healthy a poly relationship would go (there are lots of healthy and happy poly relationships with primary/secondary/tertiary/so on dynamics but I am concerned Joe seemed to be having some low self worth at that moment and with all the NRE going on, I am concerned Joyce might neglect him) but I don't think it's anything that can't be overcome to become a more healthy one.

Rob McBobson

I see several people discussing whether Joe is in the room. My feelings are that Willis is enough of a skilled cartoonist that if he wanted us to know that Joe had left the room, he would have given us a clear sign that Joe had done that. We'd have seen Joe leave, or at least heard him say "I'm gonna leave you two alone." Just look at panel four. If Joe hadn't been in the room, Willis would have been super clear that he had left and was not around to hear the words Joyce are saying in panel four, because without Joe that's a very different panel. It's different if Joyce is not, in fact, saying that stuff right where Joe can hear it. I might be wrong, of course, but that's how I see it. If it's made clear which people are in a scene, the audience are usually clearly shown when one person leaves. I can't recall, say, a dinner scene where suddenly one character is gone from their chair, even though of course a person might get up from a dinner table. That's too visually confusing.

Logibear

Agreed, there was no indication he left in the prior strip and none in this one either.

Tessea

Joyce has a point! As she points! Also some actual self-awareness as to how she's been behaving, I think. Good for her. This is also a good warm up to finally talking to Dorothy about Joe. I really hope she sees now that she can't keep putting off hard conversations.

Beck Chonigman

Joyce: "IS THIS AFFECTIONATE NOMS OR ANGRY NOMS!?!?! OAO"

MiqoRems

I think she *might* be referring to changes that she made before now, and is just now realizing/deciding were 'for Dorothy' instead of just... things that happened? Iunno, I'm having trouble thinking of anything specific too.

MiqoRems

Nah, she hasn't thrown him away, she's kept him tied up and dangling.

MiqoRems

Nobody has accused Joyce of *intentionally* causing fallout, just of *not giving a shit* about the fallout.

Dmitri0240

Just because Joe says the she can be with both of them doesn't mean that Joyce is comfortable with that type of relationship, or believes that Dorothy would be comfortable with it. And at least on the second point, she's probably right. Three people would have to be fully onboard with Joe's proposal, and so far we're only at ¾ or so (I'm still not convinced Joe actually wants that, and isn't just tentatively accepting it as a consolation prize).

Shane Wegner

Or it will be a transition to some completely other location on campus! 😈

Shane Wegner

This reminds me of the SMBC about AI chosen relationships and the extreme unrealism of two people both finding their #1 ideal person on the whole planet. “This is the 6050th and 8132nd ranked choice. We have a stable equilibrium.” And an Onion headline- “Two People Who Have Never Left Home State Miraculously Find Soulmate in High School”.

tifani

…..Hot.

Sajuuk-Khar

Look, folks, ANYONE can point out Joyce’s flaws, especially in dealing with her relationships It takes a true master to point them out *as a way of deflecting from their own feelings*

Mitzi B.

"the kindest thing I can do is yell at you a bunch" is a real reminder that Joyce is the product of some very shitty parenting

Empress of Robots

*changes the number on the sign* “It has now been 0 days since Joyce has said the gayest thing imaginable”

Dmitri0240

I do have a very minor quibble. “Fallout of your decision” sounds like a carefully-worded compromise between what Dina would actually feel and what readers want people to say to Joyce. This specific issue didn’t happen because Joyce cheated on Joe or accidentally appropriated a protest or anything else Joyce did wrong. This specific issue happened because Joyce isn’t straight and came out of the closet. If she had done everything exactly correct, this would have still happened, just a week or so later. And I would expect that Dina would be precise enough even in anger to understand that.

Rob McBobson

Just so I get it, what would you imagine is more likely for Dina to actually feel?

David M Willis

Dina's response has nothing to do with "what readers want to say to Joyce." I wrote this months before readers would've had any idea what they'd want Dina to say to Joyce.

Peach Reaver

Joyce not being in love with Becky who she sees as her sister is not fallout for her decision to blow her relationships up with other people. Gods I will die on this hill .

Maude Reads Things

@Miqo - Maybe! It's as good an explanation as anything. @Dmitri - It's true enough that she hasn't actually talked to Dorothy about this or Joe yet, so that romance might still end. I doubt she'd actually lose Joe though. I'm with you worried how this will work out if it happens though

Madeline Dingeldein

Also, Becky’s inability to deal with Joyce choosing Dorothy is not Joyce’s fault.

Logibear

"You have not even begun to fathom the depths of my gayness, for it is deep, terrible and cold... Now watch this drive"

Dmitri0240

I suppose that's fair. I'm happy to concede that Dina is a character whose romantic and sexual perspective is not one that I have the easiest time seeing. I do find the stock progressive answer of orientation being strictly fixed far too rigid, albeit with good intentions. So if Dina has more fluid view of orientation (such that she sees Joyce as having made a decision in the matter), or even rejects the notion of orientation entirely, that does open up meaningful avenues for discussion. But oof would that be a hard line for Dina to walk in a society where people have good reason to assume that anyone who questions the "born this way!" argument is a bigot who wants to put people in camps. I do appreciate that in this instance, Dina is really only holding Joyce responsible for Joyce's own discomfort with the presumed breakup, rather than blaming her for the breakup directly. Anyway, thanks so much for the comic and for being chill about having a bunch of people massively overthink every sentence these drawings say.

Tessea

No, but it's another weapon for the 'I'm not good enough for the people I love/everyone I love abandons me' intrusive thoughts to use against her. Her sense of self worth has taken a beating through her life and depression can make you assume the worst. Just look at her last conversation with Dina. Without even looking up she basically stated 'I screw everything up' and 'You're going to leave me too, so get it over with'. As for Dina, I'm not 100% on this, but I feel like she doesn't understand that Becky wasn't being rational and took what she said literally. It's definitely not something that deserves to split them up, but they both have to want to talk about it. Becky needs support and understanding. Dina needs the reassurance that Becky _does_ love her.

Ilana Feldman

Even if she and Dorothy hadn't gotten together at all, Becky would've still reacted really badly to learning she was bi. It might have been a slower process, at best.

Rob McBobson

@Peach Reaver: I'm feeling stupid today. When you say "her decision to blow her relationships up with other people", who do you mean by "her"? Becky or Joyce?

Peach Reaver

Joyce. She's the one running around dropping bombs on all her relationships that aren't Dorothy
