i think the various reactions to the joyce/dorothy coupling along the lines of "this is just the cheating bi stereotype, smh my head" are Odd, bc like. DOA's main cast is basically 60% bisexual? two of them having this plotline is like, whatever imo. it feels like claiming an author did "bury your gays" by killing a queer character even if their cast is chock full of queer characters who *don't* die. like, idk, i think there's nuance to these things. part of it also feels like it's motivated by one of anxieties people felt about the protest storyline, wherein for whatever reason some just. assumed the issues stemming from the optics of what happened that day would be left unaddressed by future strips? for some reason?? and much like the protest optics, (which seem like they were gonna be addressed even before the Asma Patch, based on the way the Bart O'Ryan class played out), in a completely predictable turn of events, the bisexuality optics are also being addressed by the story for what they are! yippee! so anyway i've been anticipating danny having this exact reaction to joyce and dorothy getting together since the moment they kissed and i'm very glad it's come to pass.

I'm #TeamHinge. They both want Joyce to be happy, but seem very Not Into Each Other. Dorothy seems to be at best suspending disbelief that Joe isn't an active sex monster, probably doesnt get how much Joyce actively likes Joe and likes being smooshed by him, let alone wanting Joe or wanting to be smoothed by him herself. Who knows what the future could bring though? I could sort of imagine imagine some supervised situation where Joyce feels better if Dorothy is there for Joe stuff and Dorothy eventually says "Eh you know what, let me try summa that next." Maybe. We'll see.

I don't get the "biphobia" thing. 1. Is it meant to be a punchline or Danny being clueless, without actual impact? Then the following doesn't matter much. 2. "X-phobia" is used for phobias and similar reactions but also for "hatred of X". Which is it? And who does Danny refer to, Joe or who else?

Basically, the joke is that he's upset with Joyce and Dorothy publicly cheating on their partners in a very public way, since that spreads the (already existing) prejudice that bisexuals cheat. And spreading prejudice about bisexuals cheating is usually biphobic, since it portrays bisexual people as bad people. Except it's clearly a bit absurd to call this particular case biphobic, since it's people *coming out* as bi. Basically, it's like this one-panel cartoon I saw once where a white reporter, interviewing a black basketball player, asked "Isn't it a bit of a nasty stereotype for you to be so good at playing basketball?"

@Dan Rabin: Possibly, but as someone who intensively analyzes this comic you know as well as anyone that everything that is or isn't included in a given strip represents a deliberate choice. Willis could just as easily have written something like, "Each of us loves both of the others equally." Of course, I could be wrong and it's like the Monty Python sketch where a pretentious film critic asks the director he's interviewing about the deep aesthetic/metaphorical reasons behind his film's abrupt switch to black-and-white, and the director replies, "We run out of color film."

GODDDDDDDD I KNEW SOMEONE WOULD BRING UP THE BIPHOBIA STEREOTYPE STUFF I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS DANNY THIS IS SO GOOOOOOOOD!!! EVEN DANNY IS HAVING A MELTDOWN!!! I love the clear shift in mood Danny has when Dorothy is mentioned. He's trying so hard to sell that it's about biphobia and not the fact he's upset Dorothy was willing to stay for someone other than him. (Him and Dorothy were together longer than this entire comic has taken place in universe i think that gives him some slight justification)

That makes a difference for me because some readers know Danny & Joe spent time together but apparently didn't speak about much after the punchline for unknown reasons. For other readers, Danny appears this week the first time for a long while – and they don't know that Danny saw Joe waiting for someone to come in in that situation... If it's just a throwaway gag and outside of the comic timeline that would help, I guess – similar to Leslie waking up in bed at home, when in the main timeline she seems to have been in jail with Robin since the protest.

I won't pretend to be suddenly surprised or outraged by that. Since Joe isn't someone who prepares sexual harassment and Danny isn't someone to act as a bystander to sexual harrassment, that bonus strip can't be canon for Dumbing of Age. And the bonus strip with Leslie at home in bed – while she was actually in prison – doesn't fit the canon timeline. I guess the most charitable interpretation is that you lied about that (only) today, for whatever reason. I definitely don't consider you someone who makes jokes like that. Nevermind, sorry to bother you.
