Holy shit, Joyce, how deep does this rabbit hole go? -Dorothy, probably

C

"No openings for new friends right now, but if this goes well, there are two slots for acquaintances. Bowling Buddies is the next step up."

Astariel

Really relating to Dorothy here. I've been trying to figure out how to make friends for decades. It's a skill I seem to have lost about the time I started high school. I also really like her mind getting blown in panel 4.

Harold

DOTTY YA BEEN RETCONNED

Logibear

"I mean it Joyce, there was something that we were meant to do for tonight..." "Look, considering the days that we've just had, I'm sure it isn't important" Smash cut to Alice "I just want to grind someone to dust between my thighs"

Fart Captor

It's already over for Asma

AE Gonzalez

I mean, look at that body language, especially in Panel 4.

Ragtime

Damn Willis, that Carly Rae Jepson bit made me smile so wide.

Andrea Andrew

They really did just fall for each other and it took a year to realize that.

Crunchos cereal

I can’t wait to see just who is coming here next. Expecting sitcom shenanigans.

AE Gonzalez

Surprised Joyce is so easily putting on bowling alley shoes, considering how infamously “not fully clean” they tend to be.

Vivian

She's in denial then, but she remembers this and I feel like the feeling of this being asking Dorothy on a date isn't entirely retrospective: she framed her nervousness against Dorothy's atheism at the time but Walky was making fun of them for a reason

Dahlia Rose

And see. It's moments like this that make me one hundred percent sure that the poly coupling with Joyce, Dorothy and Joe will not be happening. As Joyce just reminded us, and Dorothy, the first thing Joyce did upon meeting Dorothy was ask her out. Throughout their entire friendship, without realizing it, both Joyce and Dorothy wanted to be together. Even when Joyce was with Joe she very obviously still wanted to be with Dorothy. Dorothy has always been central for Joyce since they first met. The same cannot be said for Joe. Cause I mean it's pretty clear Joyce isn't really thinking about Joe much if at all lately.

Dan Rabin

I like the way the changing-shoes business ties the strip together. Joyce's borderless solo panel has her at peak shoe-exchange dynamism, while Dorothy has yet to start even in the last panel: Joyce is familiar with bowling, not so Dorothy. Asma shows up with her own ball and shoes already on. Perhaps her declining to be quick friends stems from her expecting to trounce them at bowling; perhaps she's waiting for them to deliver Alice.

Lazuli

funny realization for dorothy here

Astariel

Yeah, there's really no question that Dorothy's been the most important person to Joyce since the first week of school. I've really grown to like Joe, but even in the unlikely event that a poly relationship is attempted, he's going to be very much second place for Joyce's time and attention.

Rob McBobson

Are you saying they just won't be a full-fledged throuple, or that Joyce will give Joe an unconditional "no"?

Jesse

Is that a “hey I just met you” joke in the year of our ChungoLord 2026?

Corronchilejano

Joyce went with Joe for pizza before she invited Dorothy. He was the trial run.

GundamBradley

I think the Dorothy High means she's not really thinking about it.

Zesstra

At one of my birthday parties, one of my friends asked another "so how did you and [Zesstra] become friends?" and she thought about it for a second and said "I was working at [local board game shop] and she decided we were friends" and it reminds me of Umezz's Orochi.

Tesset

I went back to see if I could find this interaction (looks like it wasn't in the comic explicitly), but I did find this little gem. So you know how the latest time Dorothy got back together with Walky, it was implied to be redirected horniness for Joyce? To the point of, like, she walks away from an interaction with Joyce, and then goes to Walky and asks him to get back together? https://www.dumbingofage.com/comic/quiet/ Turns out the first time they started dating had a very similar vibe lol

Steph

Being direct does work.

thejeff

I can't see that first one as anything like redirected horniness. More like seeking comfort after trauma. That was right after Joyce was drugged and nearly raped.

T Campbell

It is natural for Joyce to be showering Dorothy with love and attention this soon after they got together: she was similarly attentive to Joe at the official start of their relationship. And if Dorothy was more involved in that attention than vice versa, that has more to do with her having a defined role to fit into as "one of Joyce's best friends." In the improbable scenario where Joyce started dating Dorothy BEFORE getting serious with Joe, she would undoubtedly have come to Joe for advice, and while it might've stung him, he would've been selfless enough to give it to her. All that said, when it comes to this comic's poly possibilities, I keep thinking in a line from ElfQuest: "In such an arrangement, all parties involved must like each other...very, VERY much." I don't see Dorothy and Joe getting (back?) to that level, and I definitely absolutely don't see it in the cards for Joyce and Walky.

Patrick Duke

I think the fact that bowling is, in her mind, an "approved youth group activity" overrides those impulses. The shoes are part of bowling, and bowling is good, so the shoes are good.

Tesset

Oh, I figured it *had* to be before the party so I stopped looking there lol

Harold

Those panel 2 expressions sum up this relationship in a nutshell: smug, confident Joyce and wrapped-around-her-little-finger Dorpy-grin Dorothy

tifani

Joyce loves rewriting history to make this romance way longer.

tifani

So assuming Sal shows up what are the chances she actually brings up any of the conversation she had with Joe because I think it’s likelier Danny shows up to yell at them about being stereotypes then it is Sal says anything because she does NOT want to be dragged further into this drama. Meanwhile Asma is wondering when Alice is showing up and leaves the second she finds out they didn’t invite her. Also I was recently thinking about how Joe has basically stated he fully consented to this whole thing happening so the only one who had no say in this entire situation was Walky?

Jack Atherton

It's also a little befuddled as far as Dorothy is concerned (and Joyce, I guess). Joe directed them at each other hoping for a functional poly situation but neither of them were clued in (and Dorothy still isn't 😅 ) This shit is messy and only getting messier XD

tifani

I really think that Joe is under the mistaken impression that Dorothy has been fully informed of the situation and is going to be shocked when he finds out she hasn’t been. I don’t think he knows just how bad Joyce’s avoidant behavior is.

tifani

As for Joyce I don’t think it’s really that much of a mystery where she stands. If she didn’t want both of them this wouldn’t be dragging out this long. She’s just scared to say it out loud.

Empress of Robots

I love that Asma's like "Look. I came here for kissing a cute girl that is not you. If we SOMEHOW become friends, that's just some sort of tragic accident."

Andrea Andrew

I don’t think this is rewriting history.

tifani

She turned asking Dorothy to dinner into asking her out. The same way she tried to turn the laundry thing into losing her virginity. It’s just harmless romanticizing which makes it not that deep and nothing to really take that seriously but it is a habit I’ve noticed which fits a pattern.

Dmitri0240

@Rob Joyce *did* give Joe an explicit and unmistakable "no"; her last word on the topic was "I can't date two people at the same time!". She didn't even promise Joe that she'd reconsider after she'd thought about it more, she only said that they'd "talk". Joe is not waiting for Joyce to give him an answer. He's hoping he'll be able to convince her to change her mind. And maybe he will. But I personally don't see it happening.
