"Well...shit."

Goddddd I love this so fucking much, it really feels like it crystallizes Asma's character in a way that was just delivered through her expressions and other subtle cues thus far, but now it all comes into sharper relief. Peak fiction strikes again

Friendly reminder to everyone that you are all worthy of love. Most of all, you are worthy of loving yourself.

This strip makes very effective use of the unchanging framing of the panels. Showing us the empty bed in the dark in panel lets us know that Asma just got home. Doing it this way instead of showing her flicking the light switch and doffing her hijab makes it more like the bed is a place of welcome retreat that awaits her. The way she clutches her hijab shows that it has meaning for her in this crisis. It's off, since she's in her room, but maybe the distinction only works on her "external problems"? This is all tentative on my part: maybe we'll learn more.

Daaamn... It sucks to put yourself out there only to have it backfire.

Another devastating Valentine’s Day :) <\3

I don't know if it's on purpose but the way her hair strands look make it seem like she aged 20 years.

I feel like the prevailing opinion is going to be that Joyce and Dorothy are *so* awful that it traumatized Asma to the point of despair just being in their presence for a few frames of bowling. But essentially everything she's done since her odd reaction to Joyce and Dorothy's failed apology attempt has read to me as her being deeply in the closet. The only evidence against that reading I can think of is that if her hesitancy is religion-inspired, that would be treading similar ground to both Joyce and Becky.

Harold

Seems like most of the characters have aged 15 and a half years between September and now

Gale Tazzin

failed to clear the low bar of Daisy's date with Ruth, woof

Irene Knapp

ah - yeah. that sounds right. it's an interesting thing to do with a character who's had so little screen time, we've had very little window into her feelings about all this up to now.

Mariah

yeah her whole speech to joyce sounded a lot like something she says to herself.

As someone currently living in an Arabic+Muslim country, I can say keeping LGBTQ quietly under wraps, rather than being fully out to a welcoming and publicly affirming community, is regularly how that’s handled here.

Rob McBobson

Good part is, we got an Asma strip that gives us more plot and characterization. Bad part is, the way this is told makes it clear Willis is gonna cut to somebody else now.

Joyce: “Asma, it’s okay, we promise, all of us have had our gay angst arc!” Dina: “I have not” Joyce: “Most of us have had our gay angst arc!”

thejeff

I can't see it as too deeply in the closet. She's not coming out directly and saying it, but she seems aware of her interest in Alice and willing to act on it. This reads more to me like not being good at or confident with asking someone out.

Am I the only one who feels mildly guilty about seeing Asma’s bare head? Or is anyone else that neurotic? 😅

Leslie Swabb

Ok, who was she hoping would show up?

DramaQueen

I was thinking exactly that same thing.

DramaQueen

Let’s hope she also feels some guilt over how rude she was. Leading Dorothy and Joyce on with hopes of friendship just to meet a love interest, and then completely failing even an attempt at dignified stoicism. She could have hung in there bowling with those girls at least til the end of the set, reciprocating or at least tolerating their open-hearted efforts to get to know her and had an enjoyable evening doing an activity she clearly likes. Heck, even Sal noted that she was happy to hang out with Asma and would welcome a visit. Maybe she is an extreme introvert who is burned out on human contact after ten minutes working at the desk, that kind of job can be a very bad fit.

Sajuuk-Khar

You’d best start believin’ in gay angst arcs, Miss Saruyama YER IN ONE

Harold

The consensus is that Asma was hoping it would be Alice, who also fits the boots-and-black-jacket description and to whom Asma has been shown to be attracted.

Harold

@Sajuuk-Khar: Dina: "I would like very much to be excluded from this narrative, one of which I have never asked to be a part." Joyce: "I see what you did there! You changed it a little to make it more grammatically correct than the original Taylor Swift quote." Dina: "Taylor who-now?"

Dan Rabin

Why should it not cut? All there is to do before morning is for her to talk to her roommate Angie, unless someone else decides to visit.

Rob McBobson

It shouldn't cut because I want to read more about Asma T_T
