I knew that color was there for a reason.

Awesome fake-out hehehehehehehehehehehehe

Lazuli

oooooh things are just getting juicy

Maybeeus

There it is.

HUG HER TIL SHE SNAPS IN HALF

Corronchilejano

You can't break up with Joyce Becky, you're not even in the polycule.

Rob McBobson

Okay, nobody tell the main site comments where Joyce was going. Partly because we shouldn't ruin the flood of new Patreon sponsors that today's main site strip is gonna bring Willis, and partly because if I had to suffer 24 hours of waiting then I want everybody else to suffer too. (Kinda funny how the good-hearted side of me and the selfish side want the same thing.)

C

I really do love this moment. It's very sentimental, and needed, and I'm looking forward to seeing their relationship recover in a healthy manner. *In before someone in the hall shouts "Kiss!"*

David M Willis

note the blurred out preview image wasn't of panel one

David M Willis

(though i guess none of you folks see the blurr, since you've subscribed)

C

At least wait until the third date, lol.

tifani

Well. I knew it would be her or Joe. Siiiiiiiiigh.

Logibear

Good for Joyce being honest with her truth and her position on this... however everything she's talking about is how she's wanting Becky to feel after the fact. If my best friend became atheist and then found out they were Bi and they never even tried to discuss it with me out of fear I'd be upset, I'd be pretty pissed off too. (Maybe pissed off isn't the right term here. I wouldn't be happy at least)

tifani

Maybe he’s the next stop on her list idfk.

Astariel

Ouch, Becky. I hope this is going to go well, but I'm not confident.

C

That's a fair point.

Maybeeus

Think it's better to just let this one play out before i ramble about what the comic might just spell out plainly in the very next strip. All i've got to say right now is Becky's mental state is one i'm familiar with.

Jennifer Novelli

Another (possible) installment of someone not trusting Joyce's well-meaning but self-centered attempts to make everyone be OK with her choices? And it's not even my birthday! 😁

GundamBradley

I do want her to talk to Joe, obviously, but I feel like Becky has been a pretty pressing issue, too, especially given it's been an entirely unnecessary conflict. Like, in the grand scheme of things, this is probably going to be tidier than the Joe situation, where it's prrrrrrrobably going to result in her first fight with Dorothy, at-best, and all in due time.

C

"Think about it Becky, we can talk about liking girls as a shared interest. SHARED INTEREST!"

Lazuli

"and i want you to believe ill be your friend, no matter what" i dont think joyce will realize it for a while, but saying this kind of sets in motion that her and becky will go their separate ways and just never be in contact again

Gale Tazzin

I think Becky's concern is rooted not in the reality of her friendship with Joyce but in her trauma of being abandoned by literally everyone that was supposed to care about her

Harold

This choice makes perfect sense (sorry, tifani) - Joyce's friendship with Becky has always been the most important relationship in her life (sorry, Dorothy), and they need this conversation. And Becky's response in panel 6 strikes me as not so much pessimistic as *realistic* - in marked contrast to Becky's previous wish for Joyce to promise that she'd never ever die, she knows that Joyce is promising something here that she really can't guarantee. Friendships *do* change, and people grow apart. I doubt that will happen to these two, but they are both evolving rapidly and any outcome is possible.

tifani

This conversation needed to happen. I don’t fault Joyce for wanting to check in on Becky and I said yesterday out of the potentials Becky did make sense considering the shower run in happened so recently. I just got excited about the possibility of it being Joe which was something I warned myself not to do yesterday so joke’s on me I guess. Joe is gone forever and I have accepted that. Never again will he appear. Joe died on his way back to his home planet. There never was a Joe. Joe is just a myth.

Gale Tazzin

I think Joe is a lower priority because he's already voiced support for Joyce being with Dorothy. He may be hurt, but he understands. Becky does not understand, because her Christian guilt makes her assume everything is her own fault and that Joyce is abandoning her because of her past behavior. Which is not true, so it urgently needs rectification

Yeoman

I imagine some of it too is the unrealistic and unhealthy subconscious thought that if she’d just stuck it out, she could have been romantic with Joyce, and has hurt Dina and ruined that. So abandonment trauma on top of feeling betrayed, and feeling she’s betrayed Dina by not “really” loving her. And all of it understandable to feel that way, while also being unrealistic. So… she’s got a lot to process before she can come out the other side.

Sajuuk-Khar

Commenters: look at Joyce, the Fool, trying to justify her choices that have caused this pain!!! Becky: Joyce babe I have been cast out and cast adrift by literally everyone I’ve ever loved and it ain’t yer fault it just seems ta be What Happens. Ya can’t promise you’ll be there forever cause inevitably you’ll know I’m not worth it.

Sajuuk-Khar

if anything, Joyce has abandoned her the least, lmao like, yes she’s hurt Becky but she keeps reaching back out, even clumsily, even stupidly

Amós Batista

Well, I guess I have to check tomorrow strip in Patreon. Oh wait, I'm already reading the tomorrow strip. I'm dumb.

Jennifer Novelli

For Joyce's sake, it would be better if it doesn't. She's always been real bad about having Main Character Syndrome, and it's been a lot worse recently. A nice, cold splash of water to the face might actually, ahem, "save her soul."

Sajuuk-Khar

Hey you know who actually did fulfill the prophecy of abandonment though???? *mob of people with pitchforks who don’t believe Dina has any agency because she’s a Smol Autistic Bean Uwu assembles* Ah. Never mind

Jennifer Novelli

Between this and her treatment of Walky, it's started hitting me that (this version of) Joyce doesn't see other people as People(tm).

Amós Batista

That heart crossing feeling, when you figure out that you're, in different moments of life, Joyce or Becky...

MST3K.fan: The Cheesy Movie Essays

Willis already started a nudie Patreon. The logical next step is a Patreon for Patreon that shows the strip two days from now.

HeroGirlsVT

There we go. There's that part of Joyce we love. The part that wants to believe things can work out as long as she's willing to meet them head on.

Lazuli

theres a nudie patreon?

Filias Nox

good now speak wiyh Joe and release that pour soul

Sajuuk-Khar

I mean there’s a reason those boys are friends (with benefits?????)

Sajuuk-Khar

Joyce saying that one of the things she loves about Dorothy is that she’ll try to do the right thing every time Joyce saying that she wants to be Dorothy and possess her and wear her like a hat (sapphic) Joe noting why he fell for Joyce at all (her constant attempts to be better) Poetry

Astariel

I'm afraid I disagree on all points.

Peach Reaver

If you don't love me the way I love you, ur not my friend

Jesse

Under the circumstances I think it’s okay to be a bit emotional about it, seems like the sort of thing that can be worked through. The real screw-up was with Dina.

Jennifer Novelli

A difference in philosophical frameworks, perhaps. Ah well, we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out.

Sajuuk-Khar

Joyce: I know I have hurt you, Becky, and I want to make amends because you as a person are precious to me. Please let us reconcile. Becky: I wanna reconcile but I have been abandoned or damaged by everyone I’ve ever opened my heart to and I’m terrified I’ll lose ya forever if I let myself believe again. Me, a wise sage: Hm, yes. I see. Joyce doesn’t see people as people and Becky is childishly going “mneh mneh mneh, if you don’t love me the way I love you, ur not my friend.” Truly, they are two despicable termagants.

Simon Magid

@Jesse: Agree. Well stated.

Simon Magid

@Sajuuk-Khar: I am not so sure about that. I think they are more like lictors. (Yes, that was a WH40K joke. I'll see myself out.)

Simon Magid

MST3K.fan: but then I will subscribe to it and become desperate to see the strip three days from now and that will not really solve the problem @.@

Simon Magid

@Sajuuk-khar: it is amazing that someone in a webcomic that is about making bad choices would actually make bad choices. I can see Joyce as the Fool, striding fearlessly into the world and tumbling off a cliff only to pick herself up again. And then continuing onward undaunted, aware that further cliff edges lie ahead but also knowing it is the only way to face her own fallibility.

Edwin I Callahan

To be fair, it’s kind of hard to avoid Main Character Syndrome when you’ve written as the main character in the strip.

5099 5618 v2.0

"I love you, and you were right about me being into ladies, however I'm not into *you* and I don't want this to be the reason I lose you" Truly, a canon event. Rough sailing, ahead.

Sajuuk-Khar

@Simon: No no no! Come back, hive-sibling! We haven’t spoken to one from Fleet Leviathan in ages! D: It’s just been us from Behemoth and the loud metallic biomass with guns!

electric_claire

Pretty annoyed with Becky that Joyce has to be the one who reached out. Becky blowing up their relationships because Joyce "friendzoned" them is entirely on Becky.

Jayne Lindgren

Joyce showing once again that the most important connections in her life have always been with other women has me chuffed. I feel like some of the folks who are hung up on Joe just can't accept that her entire existence doesn't revolve around her relationship with a man and putting him first.

tifani

The real Joe was the friends we made along the way.

Diane

Man, Joyce is in a rough situation. But I sympathize more cause I'm in the same situation of having two friends attracted to me, but I was only attracted to one, not the other. Just realize that with this comic, so shows how observant I am. But seriously, it's not a fun situations to be in. You really can't help that you can see someone only as a friend.

David M Willis

I have to learn, again and again, that "chuffed" is positive, not negative! You'd think I'd remember that eventually. It just sounds bad!

The Deliberate Myth

Wait... is "chuffed" NOT a negative? It always makes me think of the noise my dog makes when he whisper-barks at the door. Hesitant, not a full on bark, but a "wait a minute... something is OFF" kind of sound. So I had always assumed it conveyed a similar kind of "mildly annoyed and/or concerned" vibe.

Rachel Hammond

Chuffed is Either positive OR negative, it can depend on background, which gets VERY annoying https://www.etymonline.com/word/chuff One of those words that is it's own antonym (Which I'm now learning is a 'Contronym'), regrettably next to 'literally'

David M Willis

I think for me it just reminds me of "chafed" which also seems bad. unless it's from a week of porkin', which is an acceptable outcome given the circumstances

Shane Wegner

"I just said my _best estimate_ is yes, I will!"

Tsa

It's a perfectly cromulent word.

thejeff

That's what the Patreon for the Patreon for the Patreon tier is for. (Price doubles at each stage.)

Tessea

I'm more worried about Becky than Joe. But Joe still deserves some attention. I don't think it's about Joyce's entire existence being about Joe and putting him first. However completely ignoring him despite promising a conversation is just as bad in it's own way. But there is a middle ground between those extremes, and the situation needs to be addressed.

Tessea

Oh no. No, Becky. Stupid abandonment complex. She's certainly hit the point where she's just expecting everyone she loves to leave her and is just not trying anymore. I'm really glad this talk is starting. Becky NEEDS to get this off her chest and get some support/therapy. Then hopefully some dinosaur sized bridges can be mended.

Gale Tazzin

I think Dina is a different case because her abandonment actually *is* a consequence of Becky's behavior. but now Joyce is trying to be understanding and nice while enforcing her own boundaries, and Becky continually saying "it's ok, I understand that I'm a terrible person who deserves to be alone" is counterproductive to reconciliation.

Maude Reads Things

Ahhh a good old rousing round of 'Painful but needed conversations'

tifani

Turns out Joe was just a mass hallucination caused by ergot poisoning.

Simon Magid

@Sajuuk-Khar: :):):):):)

Peach Reaver

Yeah but Becky loses me at the part where she's upset because Joyce since the beginning of the dang strip has loved her as a SISTER. Doesn't love her romantically...which I'm sure sucks (Aro-Ace, can't relate) but she has(had?) a girlfriend who clearly loves her.... It's just kinda weird.. and kinda weird that so much focus of this whole thing has been on "Oh no, Becky's hurt" and not on the two partners that got cheated on. Becky deserves her own storyline that isn't so Joyce centric.
