holy fuck what a LINE to drop

Andrea Andrew

Aww. However, I believe Joe’s dad has gotten better.

Mark Thompson

September Joe would never have believed this. But I'm glad this Joe, here and now, can.

Logibear

Hug joe mama Joe.

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

Hmm... Maybe this is a viewpoint colored by her own rose-tinted perception of her son, but I feel like "Joe makes himself small" isn't really true? At least, not during the time his mother would have known him? Like, he spent puberty onwards being a misogynist creep obsessed with the idea of boning, and has only really not been that for the past couple of months. I feel like what Karen's saying here only really makes sense if the only version of Joe you've ever known is the Joe from Book 11 onwards, which really shouldn't be the case considering she's known Joe longer than anyone in the cast (besides his dad, of course)...

C

Damn, this one hurts deep.

Astariel

This is a really moving strip. Very emotional for both Joe and his mom and it looks like Joe is really taking it to heart in the last panel. It also confirms a lot of my thinking about Joe over the past year. However, I still find it hard to believe that so many parents read the school paper.

Downgraded my patreon for HRT

Remember *looks at Joe's first strip and just chooses to let the years pass* when Joe was the jocky player who's goal was to sleep with every woman he wasn't related to? Remember when Mike beat the shit out of him for looking at other women (actually that was really fucked up and I'm glad there was only one real funny joke attached to it and the text agreed it was fucked up-) wait was Joe always a little deeper then we gave his ass credit for? Damn you, Willis!!!

Astariel

We've never seen Joe and his mom interact before. I'd be surprised if he didn't tone the sex craziness and misogyny way down around her in high school. Also, it's hardly surprising that a mother might see through some her son's defenses to the trauma underneath (and not want to believe that her son is really a sex pest misogynist at heart).

Kazo

Man, when I put that on the Tear Jerker page I didn't think it was gonna be a *plot point*.

Logibear

I also adore that Dina is here for this.

Tessea

Awww..... *sniffles* yeah, I already completely adore Karen.

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

I think that would be a fair assessment if it weren't for her only appearance before now being in a bonus strip where she reacts to Joe entering puberty (and subsequently evolving into pre-character arc Joe) with horror. Like, I dunno, I feel like she has to have known, or been told by Danny, or *something*.

Astariel

That's true. Maybe that was a one-off that she chalked up to a hormone surge when he started hiding it better after that? I don't know, I'm just fanwanking at this point.

Dan Rabin

[Comment on emotions follows comment on visuals] The first panel has Dina's hat peeking from behind Karen as it establishes that Joe is slightly taller than Karen, who is oddly comfortable having this talk in Dina's presence. Karen tilts her head down and then moves her gaze left during the two panels of her exposition, then tilts her head back up to deliver her big line. Joe is only slightly taller, so he doesn't have to tilt his head much to engage with her. *Within* the DoA world, Joe is struck by Karen's analysis as we see here. *Outside, looking in* we might get a hint that *Karen* is drawing the parallel between her and Joe very tightly, considering that Joe has been finding his way admirably to be himself. I hope we can better understand Karen's motivation for this talk. Parents often want to protect their offspring, and parents often want to have their kids avoid their forebears' mistakes, but Karen's stance is complicated. In the previous strip we saw something like "you're getting hurt, just like me". Today it's "you try to avoid hurting people, just like me". There may very well be subtleties to come.

Jayne Lindgren

Yeah, I...uh, kinda feel like this has gone from "Joe has redeemed himself" to "Joe was always a sweet boy who never hurt nobody" which is absolutely not true. I feel like we can understand what's happened to him is messed up and his pain is valid without whitewashing him into a woobie that's *always* been Mr. Perfect.

Dan Rabin

She is almost certainly memorizing the conversation so that she can ask for help in interpreting it later.

AE Gonzalez

“But mo-o-o-o-o-om!! She gave me a blo-o-o-o-o-owjob!!!”

KiasyonSFM

HE. JUST. LIKE HIS. MAMA.

Buck Caldwell

Well, her hat at least is paying attention to Mom.

GundamBradley

This is super sweet, but also, Joe's mom is real tall. Dina's short, but yeah, between her and Richard, no wonder Joe's huge.

Crunchos cereal

I think the hallway discussion is part of the sitcom feel of the strip. Of course there isn’t that much of a set cost (though obviously some, as Willis has to draw at least something for a different place), but there is the pacing. Moving Joe and Karen somewhere else would mean at leas one if not more strips which would slow the action down. And of course there is the whole ’wrong people hear the discussion’ which is an another sitcom trope. I think it’s what Willis wants out of this, too, in addition to the surface level of Joe and his mom having a Talk.

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

Yeah, this is kinda where I'm sitting right now. I'm still on board with the premise of "Joe should allow himself to feel sad about this" but between this and Karen on the last strip comparing Joyce's baby-level cheating adventure with her ex-husband's serial philandering, I'm coming away feeling kinda meh about the whole thing. Like, she's definitely not a reliable narrator on whatever Joyce has done, which takes the sting out of it for me, but like... I dunno. I'll probably have to save any judgement on this for the end of the storyline.

Omnithea

Alright. Didn't need this. Ow.

Ragtime

it's been like 4 months? give him a chance.

Andrea Andrew

Fair enough. He clearly has room to grow. I wonder if Joe will take this talk with his mom to mean he needs to talk to Joyce and Dorothy.

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

I'm willing to forgive this strip though because being so afraid of becoming your dad that you become your mom is like, one of the most transfem things that can possibly happen to a person. there's still time, jo...

Lisa

Joe told Joyce (a long time ago, before they started dating) that the reason he represented himself as a one-dimensional horndog was so that nobody would take him seriously and therefore nobody would really be hurt by him. I think his strategy was misguided, but if we assume he really believed in it, this that falls right in line with what Karen is saying -- he was making himself small.

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

See, I do remember this, I just disagree that that was "making himself small". Typically that entails trying to take up as little social space as possible, and making a big show about boning as many women as possible really isn't that. If he were trying to make himself small he'd have been a far different character in those days. (one of the other things that bugs me a bit about this is that typically the people who have to make themselves small in society are women, and so it doesn't feel great seeing it ascribed to joe of all characters. reminds me of the one single strip i actively disliked when i read the comic for the first time, wherein jacob mansplains to two women what sexual objectification is.)

Alison Berry

To paraphrase my incredible Aunt Brenda, "I spent so much time and effort trying not to become my father, I accidentally became my mother"

William Lewis

Hah! didn't see it there till you said that! I'm just too busy shipping those two women and that's hilarious to me because I really don't often do that.

William Lewis

Oy, just realized that that wham line was what I thought was going to be the case for her and why I ship her with Dina.

Andrew

As important and character building as this is, has he replied to Dina!

Lisa

You make a fair point about the "small" angle. I suppose what resonated more for me was, "You've spent your whole life trying to make yourself somebody who can't hurt anybody else." Since that was his stated goal. (And I'm glad you remember it, because I have so far failed to find it in the archive to link it.)

Fart Captor

I'm now holding out hope that he hasn't gotten better, specifically so Stacy and Karen can get together

Andrea Andrew

Stacy and Karen?! 🏳️‍🌈🌈 Amber: you’re gay now, Mom?!

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

Yeah, that feels like a more true-to-character statement. Granted, I don't think he was any good at it whatsoever, but that makes more sense as a thread of Joe's character to pull at here this smallness thing.

Sajuuk-Khar

@Jamie: Yeah, like, even as a cismale Joe fan this doesn’t…hit right??? Like, what do you mean you know all about Joyce, ma’am? What do you mean he made himself small, he…objectively didn’t??? The way I’m able to parse this is that yeah, she’s absolutely not reliable on this, she’s just spent his entire pubescent existence rationalizing and kind of excusing his behavior because she’s his mom who loves him, and she sees the roots of it are in anxiety and pain from his mom and dad splitting (probably messily). But it’s still bad behavior, Karen! He was still treating women as objects, Karen!!

Cyril

People talking about how the description doesn't fit early DoA Joe makes me think about how different he might've been in high school versus the start of college. Was he trying to reinvent himself to be like his dad, consciously or not? Is Karen whitewashing her precious son? Both? Something else? I look forward to finding out sooner or later.

Harold

@Andrew: Why do you think she's still standing there as this personal conversation is happening? She's just below the frame, staring at her phone and tapping her foot impatiently.

Amós Batista

I'm worried with the information that parents can read IU newspaper

Harold

@Fart Captor: The Richard Rosenthal Mutual Depreciation Society

Tessea

Dina should offer a comforting physical gesture.

Zesstra

Karen, did you fuck as many women as you could, get in a sex tape scandal, and have a list of your ratings of every (cis) woman on campus leak?

Maude Reads Things

Well, someone who never WANTED to be able to hurt anyone anyway. Before we learned certain lines were lies, there was very real concern that if he hadn't hurt someone, it'd only be a matter of time before he did. I do think it's interesting she associates his behaviour with her. He didn't act like he was making himself small as people generally mean it but if he's been ignoring his own wants and needs for someone else then it fits.

Avian

"I'm actually you from the future. You're a redhead later. And trans."

Gale Tazzin

wow i am SO glad i said exactly this in yesterday's comments so i can have immediate validation

Gale Tazzin

It's been the whole time. really, since he saved her the plain donut in book 7, but you could argue it goes all the way back to "dude, you touched ME" after their failed first date

SomeKindaNerd

Not excusing him for treating women as objects, but I can imagine that part of making himself someone who couldn't hurt others was making himself an object too. I think there are years of self-loathing and disgust with himself that he's been masking because he sees the horndog persona as a necessity even though it dehumanises himself and everyone around him. Now he's dropping that mask, Karen (who I think may be partly at fault for his self-loathing) will hopefully be there to soften the landing as he finally confronts what an awful person he's been to other people, but also to himself.

Jasmijn Wellner

nice, i didn't say that yesterday, but i was thinking it just before checking patreon today

thejeff

I mean, this has been pretty clear for years. This is a little more explicit than it's ever been in the comic I think, but at least since the list came out and he started trying to change, it's been a pretty common understanding that he thought he was doomed to be like his dad and not be able to be faithful, so he was avoiding that by keeping everything superficial: No emotions to be hurt.

thejeff

I really hope he hasn't gotten better. There's been no hint that he's putting any effort into changing (and several early in the Stacy relationship that he didn't think he needed to), so if it turns out that he's just not cheating anymore, it'll seem like "he just needed the right woman", which is way too cheap of an out.

Andrea Andrew

Is…she comparing Joyce to Joe’s dad?

Johanne

I still wonder how she knows though? Because Joe clearly did not tell her. The only thing I can think of is perhaps Joyce managed to find and followed her on social media and she saw Joyce's posts there.

Harold

"HOW DID YOU FIND OUT"

JMat

This is what I think she's driving at. Joe reduced himself to a one-dimensional mask. That mask was loud and boorish, but it was definitely lesser than his interior self. Also, she's allowed to he biased, she's not the authorjust another character with their own perspective

MrShoggoth

I said Joe was doing as much a while back. It’s a relief to see his mother is the one telling him to his face, at least she’s someone who not only knows him but can see through the excuses he’s giving to himself.
