Necessary to let out the emotions...but oh boy, this could get stressful.

Logibear

"There, there Joseph. Lets go and get some cereal and plot the downfall of this Dorothy"

Andrea Andrew

Joe is basically John from Between Failures, and Joyce was his Alex.

Andrea Andrew

Joe wanted Joyce to be happy with both him and the woman she loves, but Joyce chickened out, something he didn’t account for.

Andrea Andrew

Wouldn’t…she know Dorothy from Joe’s childhood?

Logibear

I also don't think he accounted for Dorothy taking his advice to heart and moving as quickly as she did

Rubia

It's got to have been stressful for him, pretending he's been fine with the way things turned out. Glad he's getting the chance to vent a little.

Fart Captor

awwww, everyone is being so emotionally healthy for once I mean, Joe is really the only one here where that's for sure a sign of how much he's grown but it's still a rare occasion that nobody is falling back into bad coping mechanisms 🥹

Jennifer Novelli

When in doubt, diddy*. That's my motto! (*Diddy as in Vietnam-era slang for GTFOing)

Logibear

Yeah, outside of Danny (not that he would admit it) he didn't really have anyone that he could confide in at this level.

MDL

Joe finally actually saying the quiet part out loud

Harold

As Joe and Karen are walking through the quad, Dorothy and Joyce are walking in the opposite direction. They see each other. Karen's eyes narrow. The IRONSIDE theme, as used in KILL BILL, begins playing.

Harold

Might have a different meaning now

Lazuli

its gonna be okay, joseph

Overlapping sequences of three panels each: Joe/Karen do hug sequence, and Dina figures out she should leave sequence. Dina is set off both by her height and by wearing light blue and light green—Joe is wearing dark blue, Karen is wearing dark green. It takes Joe a whole panel to reciprocate the hug. The last panel needs its width both for Dina's dialogue and to show that she has definitely left the scene: this makes it less likely that the next strip will continue with Joe and Karen. I mostly see these past two strips as a Mother-knows-best scenario revealing to Joe what he really thinks, but—me overthinking here—I see a small mixture of Joe humoring Karen by showing the reaction she wants to see in order to keep the parental relationship going. He might also be venting those feelings in a very safe direction to make it easier to resume doing what he thinks is right. These are less-likely possibilities, but I enjoy considering them.

GundamBradley

Can't go over it, can't go under it, can't go around it, gotta go through it.

Astariel

Poor Joe. At least Dina's getting better at reading social situations.

Fart Captor

If you're worried about the resentment towards Dorothy and the idea that a person/relationship can be "stolen" like property, I think it's premature. While it does ignore Joyce's agency in what happened and the fact that Dorothy is not the one who had obligations towards Joe regarding his relationship with Joyce, these are fairly normal things to *feel*, and it's good that he's admitting he has those feelings (specifically to someone who is not Dorothy) As much as I have ragged on Joe in the past (largely because people were pre-forgiving/excusing him before he had shown real growth and sincere remorse), I have faith that he understands it would be unfair to take these feelings out on Dorothy and that good things will come from talking this out with his mom (depending on how well adjusted she is and the quality of her advice)

Astariel

Did she, though? I don't think Dorothy really took any initiative in going after Joyce. Joyce made basically all the moves in that direction.

Amós Batista

last panel: Maybe I need to create a chat for this

Packy Anderson

I mean, you can want Joyce to be happy, and still be sad that it's not with you.

Logibear

Sure, but best mom is here. It'll all work out.

Empress of Robots

The comments section tomorrow: "Goooooooood. Let the hate flow THROUGH you........"

Matt McKenzie

Those slack arms in the first panel. I know that feeling.

Jesse

Would've been funnier if she did.

Shane Wegner

He didn’t tell her to immediately risk the relationship by not having the courage to tell Dorothy he had dangled the possibility of a polycule, and that she liked it enough to ponder it, though. He felt he had to/she made him drown that puppy for her own protection, since she wouldn’t do it and fudged the truth a little when it came up.

Sajuuk-Khar

It’s nice to see that Joe has a loving, good mom, as well as a hot mom.

Beck Chonigman

Joe to Dorothy: "Is this revenge for the whole 'rampant misogyny' thing?" Dorothy: "...a little, yeah."

Shane Wegner

My advice to Joe is try not to pine after people who would drop him so easily. I think he’d be happier with someone who wants to be with him more proactively.

It does seem that Joe's veering off the slightly wrong, but admittedly understandable, path of blaming Dorothy for causing Joyce to cheat, instead of blaming Joyce directly who honestly had no real qualms with it in the moment. Framing it to Dina's perspective, it's like blaming Joyce for Becky breaking up with her; it's certainly an issue related to Joyce, but it's fundamentally Becky's issue and I think that's how Dina understands it.

T Campbell

If we take Karen at her word, that might not have been what Joe actually wanted.

Harold

"Yay, we're bonding!"

T Campbell

I've been reluctant to say "a Joe-Joyce-Dorothy triad feels like wishful fan thinking" because for a long time a Joyce-Dorothy relationship felt (to me at least) like wishful fan thinking, but... a Joe-Joyce-Dorothy triad feels like wishful fan thinking. It doesn't seem like any of the three of them have the maturity levels needed to make it work, and Joyce is mostly imagining it as a cheat code past her current emotional difficulties

joe mcguire

I’m glad Karen is here because I was worried Joe was going to let all this happen and not advocate for himself. I mean, Dorothy and Joyce are pretty locked in, and that’s fine, I don’t think Joe is owed Joyce or anything, but I do think he’s owed some respect and some acknowledgement of his position in all this which I don’t think we’ve really gotten. the way they got together has been bugging me this whole time and I don’t feel like they ever truly took accountability. Joyce hasn’t anyway.

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

i was referring to when Joe told Dorothy to stop denying her feelings toward Joyce. The second she did that, Joyce sniffed it out and pounced on her, lol

Maybeeus

I like to think Dina is still rotating Joyce's "Be selfish" advice around in her head a bit.
