Andrea Andrew

Joe also knew subconsciously he had secret relatives.

Lazuli

excuse me???????

Sajuuk-Khar

Even if you ask, Mom, you don’t want to know Also, good boy, Joseph. Good boy.

Logibear

"Do you happen to have a comprehensive genealogy report by the way? No reason for asking, just for peace of mind"

Logibear

"We're not related to any Malayas right?"

Sajuuk-Khar

“CARLA? But she’s like a really awkward family reunion to me!”

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

between joe and carla and thicc dorothy, joyce really just wants to bone the shit outta that whole family tree huh

Fart Captor

I once again hope Jakey dies

Vex Fidel

I believe the term is "root".

Harold

"It's strange... we've never met, but somehow she almost feels like... a daughter to me." "Sorry, Joe, did you say something?" "No, no, just mumbling to myself."

Dan Rabin

So one of Carla's parents is either Karen or Richard's first cousin. This is actually fairly close for Joe never to have heard of the relationship.

Andrea Andrew

No wonder Joyce felt drawn to Carla.

Sajuuk-Khar

Karen: Oh, no, dear, not at all. Joe: Phew. Karen: Now the DeSantos, we’re much more closely tied to— Joe: *internal screaming*

Ryan Kertai

Carla's dad did look suspiciously close to Joe, so it's likely him. That just read like a reference at the time, but it figures there was a deeper meaning to it.

Harold

"No, no Malayas that I know of. I *do* think, though, that we're related to that wackjob former congresswom--" "AAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!"

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

feeling pretty vindicated for that "hmm i don't think karen has all the facts, joe was kind of a fuckhead" essay

Harold

@Sajuuk-Khar: Once again, great minds think alike!

Fart Captor

Joe left Carla of the list because he was mentally excluding her from the category of "women" - something he has hopefully reflected on and addressed - not because he magically knew they were second cousins

Maude Reads Things

Oh PLEASE let his mom find out about the list. I am DYING for it.

GundamBradley

Ahhh, okay, this makes sense for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being to connect Carla to Joe in this universe in a familial way.

Tessea

"So if a certain specific group of people accidentally die, I become heir to the Ruttech fortune??" (Joe watched King Ralph a couple nights ago while waiting for Joyce to show up)

Ryan Kertai

So Carla's parents looking kinda like a palette-swapped Joe and Rachel likely means the relation here is through their fathers' side. This also invites the possibility that Carla and Rachel are related on the mother's side.

Kelly (they-them)

Ooh, is that essay on your Tumblr? I wanna read it

AE Gonzalez

Second cousins would mean they share a great-grandparent.

Tessea

*insert Guardians of the Galaxy "Who?" .GIF here*

Harold

@Tessea: Just keep him away from KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS

Katrina Marie Paton

I feel this shouldnt have come as quite the surprise that it was.

Dan Rabin

Not necessarily—people switch and abandon religions, and second cousins only have common great-grandparents, which is plenty of distance for this to become not-unlikely.

AE Gonzalez

I mean, considering how isolated human populations used to be, *first* cousin incest was way ,way, way more common that many of us would like to admit.

Maude Reads Things

Yep, and it means Carla and Joe share a great grandparent somewhere.

AE Gonzalez

Carla leaving Billy-lines behind her.

Jamie (QueenofSodor)

oh no, this was in the comments section, because friends in the reading group convinced me i should post it there despite all the *gestures vaugely at the joebros* the most i posted to tumblr about this scene was a joke about a bit of dialogue coming off as transfem joe foreshadowing (i'd be happy if it wasn't a joke tbh bc i'd be over the moon to read about a brick-y trans girl in this comic)

Amós Batista

"Everybody is kinda of relative in DoA" theory

LupinThe8th

Just wait until she meets and seduces Joe's mom.

Gale Tazzin

huh. Carla specifically avoided finding out if she was on the list or not, and I kinda liked the ambiguity

DramaQueen

Looks like he never met her. Just luck.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Dan Rabin So, we don't know? (I don't doubt it's never come up, btw. If that's the answer, that's good enough for now)

Lazuli

yeah thats the reaction i had!

Jesse

Dating your second cousin would be less weird than having a “Do list” in the first place, frankly.

Jesse

@Vex Fidel Is this series set in Australia all of a sudden?

Star Ringer

"IT'S HOW I REFER TO 'PEOPLE I'VE HAD CRUSHES ON' IN A SUBTLE MANNER THAT'S ALL HAHAHA"

Packy Anderson

Now I want to know how long Willis has been sitting on this revelation. Did they decide it back in the beginning, or did the realization come along the way?

thejeff

I can see that reading of this but I really hope that isn't the case. It would just be a silly bit of misdirection. A "do" list that included all the women on their floor, but just luck that he'd never met the only trans woman.

Ilana Feldman

Joyce mentioned that she had looked at the list and not seen Carla on it.

George Simpson

I couldn't name all my 2nd cousins. All it takes is for *your* parents to lose touch with a cousin, and that can happen pretty easily if their parents had a big generation

George Simpson

They'd probably leave things to some favored charity over a 2nd cousin they've never met.

Harold

@LupinThe8th: It's all in a day's work for Joyce Brown, Lesbian Love Fuckpiler

Empress of Robots

Joe is the sweating guy choosing between two buttons meme: Button 1: It's transphobic to not want to fuck Objectively Hot Carla Button 2: It's incest to want to fuck Objectively Hot Carla

Beck Chonigman

For the sake of this comic I hope not, bc that would prove pretty antisemitic having the parents who own the industry funding government slaughter in universe, introduced as such in the current climate. And considering how many people who pretend to be progressive jumped on the nazi train, when there's a clear humanist answer that involves NOT using nazi rhetoric, irl.... well... I'd prefer it not go that direction.

Andrea Andrew

Does Carla know Joe’s her cousin?

Harold

Does Carla even know who Joe is, or remember his name?

Astariel

Read somewhere once that first cousin marriages are probably the most common marriage throughout history.

Fart Captor

There was literally a whole thing where Joyce confronted him about it. He knew who she was

Tessea

Or we can assume that since the creation of this comic and it's characters VASTLY predates current events that it's not meant to be intended to be a parallel or metaphor to that level. We shouldn't go _looking_ for things to be mad about. There are enough real problems to focus our energies on. :(

Tessea

And it turns out to be Dorothy!!! What a twist!

Beck Chonigman

...you do know that reinforcing bigoted stereotypes doesn't always have to be intentional, right? Like, we literally live in a world that implants so many unchecked bigotries and biases into us, that is our job to unlearn once made aware. I don't think pointing out one of those unchecked biases when I see the possibility of it cropping up is "looking for things to be mad about." Also, I promise you that skyrocketing levels of antisemitism permeating our lives rn, intentional or not, is VERY much a problem that affects me and my family and community.
