Joyce is gonna be upset to learn Dorothy slept on another woman

“DID YOU HOLD HER HAND? ON *OUR* DRYER, YOU HUSSY?!” (In the background, Ruth is pinching her nose, she hears about the dryer and makes a noise of exasperated, constant suffering Also, Jason is there)

BBCC

Oh thank god, she's not doing anything more dangerous than passing out in Ruth's room.

i fear , this is just the begin, that mental state is really hard to escape.

Bitter Dorothy is mostly a danger to herself. Her principles are too ingrained to let her be a danger to others.

Well, nothing outrageously bad happened. But nothing outrageously good happened either. Dorothy wasn’t guided back towards the additional mental health help she needs and didn’t actually resolve any of the underlying issues that got her to this mental state in the first place. Ruth is ignoring RA policies and keeping another secret her boss would really like to know about. “By the way boss, an ordinarily straight laced student broke into my room looking for alcohol, so I…gave it to her and figured I wouldn’t tell you about any of that, ensuring you can’t help either of us manage or resolve this situation.” ::frustrated boss noises:: Maybe it won’t come up again or escalate. But if it does, now it will accrue interest. “Bad news doesn’t get better with age.”

Seems reasonably true. She’s less likely to take out her frustrations on everyone around her, like say Billie or Blaine would. But I’m also left with the feeling that being a danger “only” to herself merits more intervention than Ruth is currently providing. There might even be a temptation for everyone to think “Oh, it’s Dorothy. She’s more invincible than the rest of us and needs less help and support” feeding the whole situation.

Shane, why do you think her boss wants or needs to know about this? Serious question, here. Why do you think her manager, whom we have seen is not really a great person and doesn’t want to interact with problems on the floor, would help this situation?? You seem really upset that Ruth isn’t navigating this situation fully to the letter of rules and regulations, and ignorant of how much harm following those rules and regulations could potentially cause.

Shut up Ruth you enjoy dragging unconcious humans along the hallway

I feel the need to remind people that Ruth kept her job as a RA after the Billie suicide pact and extreme alcohol largely because her grandfather came down and worked the system in some way. Political clout, promising funding, bribery, whichever. He ‘made it all right’ and Ruth’s Boss went along with exactly what he said. As a former RA (albeit at a much smaller school) I had to go through the phases of rules martinet/dorm police to move to actually understand that student support was more important, and when an averted eye was a good thing. I can’t say Ruth is entirely on the side of right, but we have reason to believe she would know Dorothy is a lightweight and that mental exhaustion would mix, factor in light threat, and Ruth can probably better follow up with a clear headed Dorothy the next day (as we’ve seen her try to do with other students (amber) in the past. The US laws on alcohol are a mess, but that’s not really worth digging into. Letting Dorothy crash tonight, in a controlled fashion, then talking to her with a clearer head tomorrow is good. And if that follow up doesn’t include Dorothy getting all judgey at herself over this night, then that’s a place where Ruth can spin a story up the chain of Dorothy needing help and let the system take it. Dorothy has seen a therapist before, she can probably be encouraged to go back, and having a break might allow her to open up more to dig at her issues with a professional.

@Stephen S: And what made Grandpa Clint's machinations even more egregious was that he couldn't give two shits about Ruth personally. Ruth kept her job because her firing would have been an embarrassment to HIM, and to the family name. She knew she didn't deserve to keep it, and she didn't WANT it anymore. (Ironically, all this has actually made Ruth better at the job.)

Dumbing of Age, Book 13: For Once in My Life Why Couldn't I Not Be So Incredibly Right About Everything and Not End Up Having to Drag a Whole-ass Human Down the Hallway

Shane Wegner

ChatGPT did pretty well based on my limited prompt to it: (Prompt) Hypothetical situation- a ollege student, a sophomore and Resident Advisor named Ruth returns to her locked room to find another freshman student, Dorothy, has used lock picking skills to enter the room without permission. Ruth has talked with Dorothy before, and Dorothy mentioned feeling worried and uncertain about her future. Dorothy says she wants to drink some alcohol to forget her worries for a while and says she knows or at least suspects Ruth has some. This assumption is correct, because even though Ruth is in treatment for alcoholism, she hasn’t completely stopped drinking alcohol. What actions might be good for Ruth to take next? (ChatGPT says): The situation you have described is complex and potentially serious, as it involves issues of unauthorized entry, substance abuse, and a possible violation of Ruth's role as a Resident Advisor. Here are some actions that Ruth might consider taking: Assess the situation: Ruth should assess the situation and determine whether Dorothy appears to be in any immediate danger or distress. If Dorothy seems to be in crisis or in need of medical attention, Ruth should contact appropriate emergency services right away. Establish boundaries: Ruth should make it clear to Dorothy that entering her room without permission is not acceptable and that she does not condone underage drinking or substance abuse. Ruth should also emphasize that she is in recovery and cannot offer Dorothy any alcohol. Refer to resources: Ruth may want to refer Dorothy to resources on campus, such as counseling services, academic advising, or support groups, that may be able to help her with her concerns and worries about the future. Document the incident: As a Resident Advisor, Ruth may need to document the incident and report it to appropriate authorities, such as her supervisor or campus security. This documentation should be done in a factual and objective manner, without judgment or assumptions. Seek support: Ruth may also want to seek support for herself, as this incident may trigger her own struggles with alcoholism. She can reach out to her support network, such as her sponsor or therapist, or seek out resources on campus for students in recovery. Ultimately, Ruth's priority should be to ensure the safety and well-being of herself and Dorothy, while also upholding her responsibilities as a Resident Advisor and promoting a safe and respectful community on campus.
