Call me Ishmael

Oh mah gawd. I am so excited for this. I get to rewatch one of my favorite childhood shows with someone who's never watched it.

BRT

Everyone was sooo OBSESSED with this show back then, for good reason. Great television. Love both the main characters, the actors (both so attractive), the writing and production. Some of the episodes are really weird, some are deep, troubling, heart warming, occasionslly hilarious... it's got everything going for it.

It's funny you mentioned how young Gillian Anderson is...she actually lied about her age and told producers she was older than she was! If you're looking for another show to watch alongside this one, I'd recommend The Twilight Zone! It could be a couple "palette cleanser" between each season...maybe watch two or three episodes before starting the next season of The X Files. And since the show is basically an anthology, with each episode being a different story and cast, you could start anywhere! You could just google "Best Twilight Zone Episodes" and start there if you want! And I like the new format!

Beff

I was 12 when this show came out and I was hooked hard. My bff would come over, my mom would make us snacks and this was our Friday nights for years.

TGrimace

I love this show. I'm so excited for the watch through. Although, and I'm sure a million people have said this, I feel so old. It was such a cultural phenomenon when it was on. The thought that someone could only barely be aware of the show, not even sure of their names... It's almost unbelievable. Yeah. I'm old. Another show to react to in parallel to this one? Personally I'd vote for just doubling up on the X-Files. Whatever time you would spent watching some other show? Just watch another episode of this instead! :D

Just Plain Bob

Friday nights on Fox in 1993 were the best two hours of tv in my lifetime. First, The Adventures of Brison County Jr. was on. It was a fun, adventurous mix of western, comedy and sci-fi starring Bruce “The Chin” Campbell (of Evil Dead fame) as the eponymous character. Then came the X-Files, dark and brooding and mysterious. Inspired by “The Night Stalker” tv series of the early 70s, I always felt it was at its best when it most closely mimicked its forebear by broadcasting stand alone, monster-of-the-week episodes.

Mark

Nice watch! I agree, the monster-of-the-week episodes were my favorite, and now that Kat has seen so many classic horror movies, she'll be able to recognize the inspiration for many of them.

Chrispy

I never watched this show when it came out. I probably thought it would be too scary. The only episode I’ve seen is (more than once) “Home” I won’t say anymore. X-Files fans know 🤣 I’m excited to watch this series for the first time.

It's been years since I've seen these, which is great because it feels like watching them for the first time. These episodes go by so quickly; I wish you'd play two back-to-back. I also wish you'd turn up your volume. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I have trouble hearing you sometimes. I'm only 63, and my hearing can't be that bad. I would think it's me, but I'm a patron with four other people, and I have no trouble hearing them. Sometimes I struggle to hear you, especially now that you're not blurring out the picture or sound, because I'm still watching my own episode. Like my ex used to say, speak up, if you got something to say, spit it out 👂 😉 lol

Jeremy V.

Would have liked to have seen 2 episodes at a time but I am real excited.

Katie Jackson

This episode and many others were loosely based on actual unsolved cases. At least a small number anyway.

Dave_Dot_Executable

Glad to see that you enjoyed the first episode! As far as the new format goes, I like it. It is a lot easier not having to bother syncing up my copy with yours to the exact second. If the copyright MIBs will let you get away with this, I'd say keep doing it.

Katie Jackson

The Sheriif needs to lose his job and go to prison. He knowingly allowed murders to happen and attacked 2 FBI agents.

Katie Jackson

I think if you're gonna do another series to go with The X-Files, it should be Buffy The Vampire Slayer. They are similar enough but also very different and were both on tv at the same time. Plus the Buffy series is amazing and always draws alot of views.

Katie Jackson

I cast the episode to my tv and also had a hard time hearing. I had to turn my tv way up, but that might be because I was casting it

Michael Gehrman

Love it! Thanks for doing this! Please keep it up!

Michael Gehrman

If you'd like to do another series at the same time, I strongly suggest Fringe, which has a similar vibe, and great writing.

Anton Hennicker

Great watch Kat and yes, love this new format.

Justin Broadbent

I would recommend Hannibal would be a good series to watch in tandem with X-files

Dave_Dot_Executable

Yes I also definitely had some trouble hearing this, I turned my volume ALL the way up to hear it at a decent level.

laurax22

Yessss!!! My one of my favorite shows growing up! Was I too young to watch these? Probably. Did I care? Nope! 😂 I love the new format and I’d say keep doing it until they get all copyright happy. Can’t wait for this journey down memory lane to continue!

Michael Gehrman

This new format is a vast improvement, Much less hassle and more pleasant. Once again, I suggest Fringe as a second choice; the vibe is the closest thing to this that I can think of, with high quality writing and acting, without mixing in too much camp, which s lot of shows succumb to.

Taco Wolf

Yesss, I'm so excited that you're watching X-Files! Since you mentioned that you're considering peppering in a second, shorter show I'd again like to suggest Firefly (2002) and the follow-up movie Serenity (2005) only 14 episodes, it continues the sci-fi theme and I think you would love it :D

Just Plain Bob

Finally got around to watching this reaction. Excellent. At the time I first saw this series, I had watched very few foreign movies. Since then, I’ve seen many more. If Chris Carter wasn’t directly referencing the Ozploitation classic “Patrick” with the Billy character, I’d be surprised. I loved the first few seasons of this show but, for me, it gradually fell apart as plot lines contradicted one another. Not in a way that led the viewer to believe it was intentional, but as if unplanned. Chris Carter later admitted this was the case. He had no show bible and wrote episodes with the intent to “create cool moments.” He succeeded at that in spades but the overall story suffered greatly with huge plot holes and flawed logic. As a series, it was fun and showed what could be done with a long form medium but it also demonstrated the need for a “show bible” if an overriding narrative was going to be the impetus that drove a show forward. Perhaps in a rare case of Hollywood learning from its mistakes, some future series (such as “Carnivale”, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “The Wire”) employed show bibles to great effect.

Leslie Summey

I didn't have trouble hearing Kat but I had trouble hearing the show. So I had to crank it way up and then it made Kat sound very loud.

Rayve

Great reaction 💕 I love this series! Going to enjoy your predictions :)

Michael clark

Can I view all X-Files tv shows without my own copy.

David K

Just joined, and I'm so excited to watch this along with you! You know what other show would be amazing? The Twilight Zone! I think you'd really enjoy it

Itss_NattyJ

Hi Kat! Returned to Patreon for the X-Files (and more you of course)! Love that you’re reacting to something different than most reactors and that it’s a nostalgic favorite of mine. Let’s go!!

Itss_NattyJ

22:02 Guurl! Who you tellin?! I started watching the series for the unexplained phenomena, but stayed for David Duchovny's charm and sex appeal.

Michael clark

When will we get the next X-File episode?

Kiki McD

I've been YouTubing for a while now, but the X Files? I'm HERE for it. I really really think you'll love it. All of it. Allllllll 11 seasons and 2 movies (that is not necessary at all). I echo other's suggestions for Firefly.

katwatcheshorrormovies

HI KIKI!!! YAY so happy to have you!!! I am loving it so far. I feel like this kind of show is right up my alley, except it's WAY scarier than I expected. FIREFLY 100% WILL BE ON HERE AT SOME POINT!! IF YOU ALL WANT IT!!!

katwatcheshorrormovies

Hi Michael!!! Every Sunday forever!! Or until the series is done... Or you all want me to stop... WHICHEVER COMES FIRST!!

katwatcheshorrormovies

WELCOME BACK NATTYJ!!! Totally getting the hype around this series. And right up my alley too. YAY!!

katwatcheshorrormovies

WELCOME IN DAVID THANK YOU!! So happy to have you!! I hope you enjoy it as much as I am so far. LOTS of recommendations for TZ... 100% will watch it on here if y'all want to see it!!! Thank you again for joining up!!

katwatcheshorrormovies

YAY! Lol I'm having a lot of trouble predicting this show, which I LOVE. Keep me guessing!! I love a surprise!!

katwatcheshorrormovies

This is super interesting! A lot of people have mentioned it falls off like you said... A show bible is crucial. That's for a good reason a great show might jump the shark as they say. Haven't seen Carnivale or The Wire, but I loved binging buffy in 2020!!

katwatcheshorrormovies

So so happy to hear you like the new format. Going to test it out on this series, and then in a month or two bring it to the regular videos/movies as well. Thank you for the feedback! And suggesting Fringe! It's definitely coming up a lot...!

katwatcheshorrormovies

YAY!!! Thanks for the feedback on the new format!! I'll try it on Xfiles exclusively for the next month or two, and then perhaps bring it over to the weekly movies. CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS JOURNEY!!!

katwatcheshorrormovies

Hi Jusin! I've heard great things about Hannibal! I'll try to remember to include it in the next poll, if it wasn't in the last one!!

katwatcheshorrormovies

YAY ANTON!! Thanks for letting me know!! I'll try it for XFiles only the next month or two, and then perhaps change all movies moving forward to the same if the feedback is universally positive!! I know some people prefer their own copy to have control over volume... We will see!!

katwatcheshorrormovies

So many recommendations for Fringe!! I'd never heard of it until now... I'll look it up!! Thanks Michael!!

katwatcheshorrormovies

Hi Katie!! I put it on the last TV Show poll, and will include it in the next one!! I binged it in 2020 deep pandemic, but would be VERY GLAD to watch it again. IT DESERVES A REWATCH!!!

katwatcheshorrormovies

Thank you for the feedback Dave!!! And for being here, as per usual!!! I'll try it for XFiles the next month or two, and then maybe change all movies moving forward to the same if the feedback is universally positive!! I know some people prefer their own copy to have control over volume. I'll be keeping my eyes on the comments!!

katwatcheshorrormovies

FAIR ENOUGH AND GOOD FEEDBACK!!! If I can get a few episodes ahead and can still be sure to drop content every Sunday, I'll do it!! Right now I can definitely get one out every week. If that changes, you got it!!

katwatcheshorrormovies

I was super worried about the volume issue!! Please let me know what you think about tomorrow's episode. I tried to up the volume, and the trouble is it sounds perfect on my end... OOF! Thank you so much for the feedback on this new format!!!!

katwatcheshorrormovies

YAY!! Can't wait for those. I have seen a lot of monster movies now... BUT SO MANY MORE TO GO.

katwatcheshorrormovies

This is a great suggestion!! I have been thinking of eventually running another series concurrently when I have a bit more time, but if y'all would rather two episodes per week when the time comes, I can definitely do that too...!

katwatcheshorrormovies

Hey Emily!! WHAT!!!! How did she get away with that? I also heard Mila Kunis lied about her age during That 70s Show! That's a great fun fact. LOTS of Twilight Zone recommendations!!! GREAT to know I can watch Best Of and that they don't follow an order!!!!!

katwatcheshorrormovies

I love that!!! A show with great characters, great writing and great production is a recipe for success. Very excited!!!

Michael Gehrman

Fringe is very well done. I really think you would like it. It is clever, intelligent sci fi with good tension and not a bunch of camp.

Rayve

That would be fantastic!! And a change from the X-Files. Might go nicely together for a brief stint of the season + movie!

Rayve

Ah had never thought about that being a reason! I watch on my phone so it’s nice having everything on one screen, much prefer this current format for The XFiles and hope it carries over to more in the future!

laurax22

Yes!!! I’m beyond excited for this adventure! I cannot wait for my favorite episodes to get here! But let’s be honest, the whole show is amazing! And I cannot wait for you to get to the first X-files Feature movie too!! It’s so good!!

EmilyKT

If we can trust the IMDb trivia page, she said she was four years older than she actually was. Maybe the audition specs were asking for a specific range, like 28-32, and she made herself 28 when she was really 24, just so she could get in the door. But man, am I glad she did! Cannot imagine anyone else playing this role. And Twilight Zone would be fun! Each episode is less than 30 minutes, so you could go through it quickly, even though there are five seasons.

Chrispy

I like the new format. It’s easier to watch your reaction and movie/show without having to look at two screens.

Call me Ishmael

So I get to watch ep 2 on the morrow?! Huzzah

Robert Raszkowski

So I just upgraded my status and watched this... again. Funny how memory comes back. It has been some time...some 20 years I guess. I clearly remember the beginning but not the end of the pilot episode. But no matter - more fun for me. I hope You will love this. It was The Best serial in that era for... 6 seasons I would say. Thanks for watching it KAT. :)

BrakYeller

I'm 1000% the target audience for The X-Files. It did such a great job of taking all of the conspiracy lore of the 70s through the early 2000s, and turning that lore into a sandbox for the show to play in. The show *is* loosely based (sometimes very, VERY loosely) on reported paranormal/UFO accounts that were popularized in the contemporary culture when the show was made. If you were into all of the paranormal/UFO stuff of the time like I was (I literally tried my hardest to be Fox Mulder in high school; I had the grey trenchcoat and everything but the show didn't get big until I was in college... way to mistime my attempt at coolness, high school me!), there are so many winks and nods to that culture which tie in to the show's own lore. It's fun to revisit the show every so often, and super fun to re-watch through the lens of your particular "I hate horror movies" approach. IMO it's worth it to see the show through to the end, though there will come a point where the show will stop surprising you. I've always thought that it was a bad omen to name a late-in-the-run-of-the-show episode "Jump The Shark"... feels like you're tempting fate. Been wanting to sign on to the Patreon for a while now, can finally afford to do it, and you starting X-Files is the icing on the cake.

Nowhere Man

X-Files! Wow. That's ambitious. I never watched this show when it first aired. I waited years to binge it, in stages. I found the first season or so to be annoyingly slow-paced, but each season gets better. The production values improve and the writing gets a lot more creative. And some of the themes this show crafted, such as "The Truth Is Out There" and Cigarette Smoking Man, are the stuff of legends. There's one episode in particular that was directed by Gillian Anderson herself that is my personal favorite. Over the entire run of the show, the shallow character motivations, and inconsistent and incomplete larger story arcs, border on annoying, but the storytelling has other strengths. Always frame this show through a "monster of the week" lens, and it stays sharply in focus.

Sky Commanda

I saw on ur vid that patreon members get the xfiles.. I was like What!! Sign me up to Kat reacts to my all time favorite show!! I am so happy to be here for this ride with u. I watched this when it first came out commercials and all and to get to watch u go through this wild ride for the first time.. omg so here for it!!

Who Are These People

Yeah I subscribed here when I found out you were watching the X-Files. "They're going to kiss in the pilot". I just gotta say, when you've completed this series, remember that us OG watchers waited months for each new season and had to sit through all the cliff-hanger commercial breaks. Be glad you get it streaming now!

Sarah Sawyer

I just joined your Patreon today for this series! It’s my favorite and I can’t wait to experience it with you!

Michael Davis

Kat, your videos are _the greatest thing EVER!_ I just joined your Patreon and am looking forward to _more stuff!_ I think you've just improved on _perfection_ (is that possible?)

Matthew McDowell

I just saw Gillian Anderson on Conan O'Brien needs a friend today. Apparently she lied about her age to get the part. She claimed to be 27 and was only 24. She thought a 24 year old with advanced degrees wouldn't be believable.

Wxyz@73

Xfiles and Supernatural would be in the same universe if it were up to me 😁
