Right?!? Die Hard is a masterpiece of the Action genre. Best action film ever written: every main and secondary character has an arc, even people just in one scene are given business to humanize them (the Twinkie cashier with his "yeah." The terrorist eyeing the Crunch bar), twists and surprises and fun lines and constant tension throughout. Once all this comic book stuff has worked through Hollywood's digestive tract, let's hope they go back to making good films like this one 37 years ago. Thanks Kat, good reaction as always.

It's not Christmas until I see Hans Gruber fall of Nakatomi Plaza.

Awesome movie and reaction! This was Alan Rickman's first movie and he freakin' nailed it! There was also some controversy about them choosing Bruce Willis as an action hero since he was only recently known for his role in the tv show Moonlighting. He turned out to be prefect!

I saw this movie in the theater with my brothers and step-father. It was immediately obvious that it was one of the all time great action movies. Years later I read a book by Roderick Thorpe, “Nothing Lasts Forever”, and realized it was the basis for “Die Hard.” I did some research and found out that he also wrote “The Detective” (adapted into a film of the same name and starring Frank Sinatra) featuring the same lead character. Apparently, the original plan was that Sinatra would reprise his role in the big screen adaptation of “Nothing Lasts Forever” (the character in the book was considerably older than Bruce Willis). The movie languished in development hell until it was revived a decade later as “Die Hard.”

I always watch Die Hard around Christmas. Every year. It's tradition. Definitely a Christmas movie. (I've never met anyone who disagrees, despite all the 'controversy' about it. Ha)

My friends and I finally got to watch one this with you. WE LOVED IT!! We loved your analysis, your perfectly cut screams. You predicting stuff that comes true. We were happy that you were happy. Truly Great Stuff Kat!

We watch it every year on Christmas Eve. If it's a good year, I can time it right so that Hans Gruber falls right at the stroke of midnight.

My favorite bit of movie trivia ever comes from this movie: Alan Rickman, deathly afraid of heights, was convinced by the director to be on a wire rig falling backwards to do the close up shot looking down at him from above as he falls out of the building, to really sell the scene. Action movies had hundreds of scenes of the bad guy falling out a window, but no one had ever done a close up shot of the bad guy's reaction on the way down before, and Hans Gruber is such a brilliant villain that the production thought his arc needed that kind of finality. After checking it out to get an idea of his own safety, Rickman agreed but said he'd only do it once. To get the genuine look of fear, they told Rickman they'd drop him on the count of three... but they actually dropped him on the count of one. Poor guy literally thought the stunt went wrong and he was about to die, and was initially *really* unhappy about it, but turned out to be good sport about it after he saw the final product. That look of terror is 100% genuine. Rickman was talked into doing a second take (for safety), but it was that first take that made it into the movie. It was the last thing he shot, appropriately enough.

Also, the exterior shot of Hans falling is a real live stuntman doing a 30 story fall, not a dummy. The shot very cleverly hides the fall wire in the vertical lines of the building, and the deceleration stage and airbag impact happen out of frame behind the plaza railings and police barriers. Worth mentioning that the cinematographer on this movie was Jan de Bont, who went on to direct Speed and Twister.

Only begins to feel like Christmas to me once the 'Die Hard' VHS comes off the shelf...Forget everyone inside pretending to keep a dead tree alive... I am going to go buy twinkies, and Then watching "Roy" run around barefoot...Thank-you for this movie pick ma'am...

You were a hundred percent correct Al Powell is the same person who plays Carl Winslow on Family Matters.

Man, do I miss Alan Rickman. This was actually seven years before Sense and Sensibility...because amazingly, Die Hard was his FIRST MOVIE.

I love your reactions SO MUCH, but your content rarely overlaps what I'm currently watching. But Die Hard? Come on. Who can resist that? There’s definitely dying in this (maybe) Xmas movie, and it’s all very hard-like. The setup scenes in this movie have some exquisitely subtle hints. And the head shot is where this movie (maybe) stops being an Xmas movie (at least for a while). As a side note, in the recent Fallout series, the father figure has a similar surname and a daughter named Lucy. Kat: “Steps on a nail and gets tetanus.” Good guess, but it’s not nails. Gotta love lead movie characters who talk to themselves, about themselves, in the 3rd person. But given how expertly John handles all of the problems he faces, you gotta wonder WTF this NYC cop has been doing, exactly. And, let’s face it, Bruce Willis sparring with Alan Rickman is nothing less than movie magic. If you were wondering when things were going to get “hard”, wait for it... wait for it... wait for it... BOOM! Big badda boom. That’s some pretty good action, eh? Especially for 1988. And that fall. Bye bye Hans. Happy trails. And that bromance. What a tear jerker. Mega character arcs. Badass character arcs. And some karma for the assholes. This movie is the gift that keeps on giving. It’s a classic. A Christmas classic. And that was another classic reaction on your part. I left the credits running while you were talking, with Ode to Joy booming in the background. You've never sounded so epic.

Such a fun reaction, and so enjoyable to see you try to guess how things would go. I love this -- it's so much fun, it's a smart script. Like you say, it's a Hollywood movie but it's a great big fabulous Hollywood action flick that gives us everything we want. And the casting is so wonderful! Alan Rickman making his mark on film in a huge way, Bruce Willis -- same. I still remember how everyone was skeptical of this at the time because all Bruce had done was the Moonlighting TV show. But he's so good as the action lead. And you made me laugh out loud with, "You could have had a career as a supermodel on a catwalk, but instead you're a criminal," LOL! And Die Hard is 1000% a Christmas movie!

In 2017 this movie was placed into the National Film Registry for being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant," a work of enduring importance to American culture reflecting who we are as a people and as a nation.
