Good call on immediately catching the importance of the pen.

"Close but no cigar" comes from old timey circus games where the prize would be a cigar

Who Are These People

I just got here from your youtube channel. I've been enjoying your reactions there but when I found out you're watching X-Files I had to subscribe. You've already begun to get the drift of this series, but it reminds me of 'The Fortean Times', a long-running magazine from the UK with each issue dealing with unexplained phenomena in an earnestly journalistic way, not like a tabloid. I wouldn't be surprised if the writers of this show took a lot of inspiration from that magazine for subject matter. The X-Files wasn't just vague "hot topic horror" like some shows. It typically cites more material and historical information than a shallower show like Buffy or Supernatural. You've also no doubt begun to notice that they cast different types of actors for this show, not just the conventionally 'good looking' clones that are so common on TV. This also lends to it's more engaging and realistic feel, like these are people you might actually encounter in life. As to the big "will they won't they"...well, who knows? But...I Want To Believe ;)

This was one of the three big "lore dump" episodes of the first season, not counting the show's pilot... it felt like an "important episode" because it indeed was. This is the first episode in the series where you can start to trace the outlines of the big conspiracy that makes up the overall mythology of the show. Get ready for many, many more of those "truth sandwiches." NO SPOILERS! Fun fact, the character of Fox Mulder loves sunflower seeds because it's show creator Chris Carter's favorite food. David Duchovny absolutely hates them, and it's a testament to his acting that it never comes across whenever Mulder's scarfing them down. Do you all not have them in Canada, is that why we're lucky?

"The truth is out there. But so are lies." One of my favorite lines of the entire series! And it's the first appearance of the Lone Gunman! And I have to share this random...story? Factoid? Anyway. I watched All the President's Men the other night and I love that this episode pays homage to that movie (and real-life event) when he called his source "deep background". That's how Bob Woodward referred to his Watergate source "Deep Throat" and I love that Mulder refers to his "Deep Throat" the same way. I can't remember if he ever refers to the character by that name or if he's just credited as that...but I thought it was a cool little nod either way.

BrakYeller

IIRC, there's a few times in later seasons where the character is referred to directly as "Deep Throat." I just realized that when this season was shot and aired, Bob Woodward's "Deep Throat" source was still unnamed. It was only in 2005 that the true identity of the real life "Deep Throat" was revealed and confirmed by Woodward & Bernstein... years after the The X-Files ended. I don't think that in the X-Files universe that the man Mulder calls "Deep Throat" was meant to be the Woodward & Bernstein "Deep Throat," though. I think it was more of an homage on Mulder's part.

Great! I hope yu keep up watching all the e[isodes, which I am enjoying a lot. Some of them are stand alones, and others are story arc episodes, but they atr for the most part all entertaining and worth watching.

I don’t see where you respond to you comments these days.😢.

I think he meant it as an homage too. It's just interesting to think about the fact that this show was made in the 90's so Watergate wasn't even 20 years ago at that point, and I think Scully would have absolutely understood that reference. But I have to say, the idea of Mulder's "Deep Throat" and Mark Felt (Bob Woodward's Deep Throat) being the same person is actually a really cool idea! Especially since no one knew who he was at the time...I feel like that could have been a fan theory if online forums were as big then as they are now. Or if Twitter had been a thing back then.

I think you should react to JFK from Oliver Stone. It isn’t horror, but it’s the kind of paranoid thriller that’ll keep you on your toes the same way The X-Files does.

RJ Inkglider

The thing with the X-Files that I remember being frustrated with is related to the same thing with the Lost series; they give you tantalizing clues to keep you interested but there are seldom any compelling resolutions to them. I never finished the series so I can't objectively judge whether or not they ultimately did anything to prove me wrong, but I'm enjoying revisiting them both to see how naïve and accurate the writing was about real-life government betrayal of the public is.

RJ Inkglider

Watergate is trifling nonsense compared to the level of government misdeeds we've seen in the last 10 years.

I should try walking off into mist, but it seems somewhat dramatic just to leave the office
