Louis Marzullo

🤣😂🤣 The laugh you just gave me with that thumbnail is worth a million bucks! Wish I had it to give to you ❤️

Matt O'Keefe

Just wait on watch the next two at least Dawn.

Bill W

Bad take on this one.

Chicago Artist Jon

Southpaw leads with his right hand so his stance would be the opposite of what most fighters would be use to defending against. In this corner Daaaawn the Bleach Blonde Bomber Maaaarieeeee

Bartleby

Rocky didn’t win the fight. Apollo Creed did. Listen to the announcer at the end. The judges went with Apollo Creed. Remember all Rocky wanted to do was go the distance with Apollo. And Rocky accomplished that. No one was talking about autism in the 1970s. Boxers take many blows to the head thus can end up what is known as “Punchy”

Paul Newman

Boxers used to eat raw eggs for convenience, its quicker than cooking them. And they don't fill you as much. Stallone really did eat raw eggs while filming.

Bartleby

And everyone cannot sing Dawn.

Bartleby

Previously I predicted all the movies got a Best Movie Ever from Dawn. Well now I think I was 180 degrees off and none of the movies got Best Movie Ever. Something tells me Dawn won’t find No Country for Old Men all too thrilling.

Jimmy Walker

You find a female lead role that you did not found irritating.

Louis Marzullo

I enjoyed the reaction Dawn but it seemed like you were not allowing yourself to like the movie as much as you wanted to or could have because of what you correctly identified as preconceived biases/expectations. And of course being conditioned by more contemporary films to want something spectacular to happen every 5 seconds. This movie is more about character development, about people, than spectacle. I think you will care about these characters more & more with each installment but watch this one again before Rocky 2 with a bit different mindset & you will enjoy it much more, I believe. And keep punching, champ!🥊

Manny

South PAW as in cats paw, but you probs looked it up already

Robert Jewell

Sorry, but your impossible expectations in whatever they phantasmagorically imagined may have caused whatever disapoointment the film had for you because it was a small very low budget production about a humble person in a specifically poor place namely Kensington in North Philly and how his character deals with opportunity rather than a film with big fireworks. The funny thing is during the reaction you seemed to really like it, its endearing qualities, then really love it, "I'm gonna cry..." So I'm perplexed. Oh, well.

Manny

When they cut Rocky🤣😂😂..priceless! You truly are one of Gods gems! The cut was so the referee wouldn't stop the fight because Rocky needed to be able to see enough to pass the "how many fingers am I holding up". If they got caught cutting him, the fight would have been stopped.

Bill W

The Scottish Stinger The Celtic Crippler The Peterhead Pugilist The Gaelic Gangster The Lady Ali of the North Sea

james flack

Dawn, it's not your fault, it might be your generation gap. Movies made in this time period catered to captive audiences in movie theaters, hence, they explained key elements needed to understand the film only once and also assumed practically everyone had at least a rudimentary knowledge of boxing rules. Fast forward to today, where most people are watching at home with constant distractions, cell phones being just one of them. In fact, I think I read somewhere that scriptwriters of this day and age, actually take this into consideration when plying their trade. Now, if I can only get Bartleby to verify my last comment, I'll know for sure it's true.....Just sayin'......🤔

Nathan Wolff

The song ,"Eye of the Tiger" is featured in Rocky III.

Nathan Wolff

Fun fact, Rocky's pets, the dog and 2 turtles, were actually Sylvester Stallone's pets in real life.

Bartleby

Is Dawn really that different from any other woman? 🤷‍♂️

Bartleby

Human beings were also trained and conditioned to absorb information faster than ever before. The 80s had movies with faster cuts and the birth of MTV and music videos. All movies from the 70s and before took their time and a leisurely pace in telling their stories. What’s surprising is that this would be an issue at all for Dawn as she’s watched so many older classics. She should be use to the slower pacing of older films. I guess it comes down to the preconceptions she may have had of the film with how it’s regarded in contrast to the very humble origins of the film, which was really more like an independent film.

Bartleby

The story of Sylvester Stallone getting Rocky made has become the stuff of legend! It’s even more unlikely an underdog story than the story of Rocky itself that Stallone wrote. Here’s a great video recapping this classic inside Hollywood story of everything Stallone put on the line in order to get Rocky made. The gamble of a lifetime that paid off like no other gamble ever has. https://youtu.be/v4IY5RTQkqo?si=H3ftHae7bR_G237o

Robert Jewell

I don't really think in those terms so can't answer, but was just responding to her specific reaction and her end thoughts. Expectation is the last thing to bring to a first time movie watch.

Richard Stokes

Ok, so you are either; Dawn the Destroyer Or The Peterhead Prancer! To really get into character as the Peterhead Prancer if you watch 'When We Were Kings' and I'm thinking you are like Muhammed Ali who basically danced around and wore out George Foreman doing a lot of prancing around!)

Bartleby

Meaning women are known for their mixed signals. Yeah first time reactions are always funner when the person goes in totally blind. Hard to do that though with a film like Rocky. Though the fact that it’s an underdog story should have been a hint at humble beginnings. Oh well….

james flack

Attention, Louis Marzullo: Dad Joke of the Week!.......I recently changed my dog's name to "Five Miles....That way, I can be completely honest with people, when I say, "I walk Five Miles every day".......🤭

Louis Marzullo

Haha! 😄 James, I like that one alot more than this one David Lee Roth of Van Halen told on a radio talk-show: "I have a dog with no legs named 'Cigarette' & every day I take him out for a drag" 😝

Louis Marzullo

Let's see if any of Dawn's questions haven't been answered yet: Ok, just to be a little more specific, Apollo won by "Split Decision", meaning 2 of the 3 judges at ringside voted for him, one for Rocky. So it was very close... Rocky has been boxing since his teens & has had 64 pro fights at the time he meets Apollo, winning 44, losing 20... Rocky Marciano was Heavyweight champion in the I950's & retired undefeated, 49 wins, no losses. Obviously, he is an idol of Rocky's... The dog's name is Butkus. One of your Chicago patrons should have the honor of telling you where that name comes from... Boxing rounds are 3 minutes each. When the bell rings, they're supposed to stop hitting each other! Rocky & Apollo slaughtered each other for 15 rounds, the limit at the time. Now, matches are 12 round-limit because medical research revealed alot of traumatic brain injury was being sustained in those last 3 rounds.

Louis Marzullo

Oh, a boxing nickname for you... All I can think of at the moment is "The Snackinator". Sorry... 😔

Chicago Artist Jon

A Bull Mastiff named after the savage Chicago Bears football linebacker Dick Butkus (1965-1973) and Stallone’s family pet.

Ragnar Miersch

Thanks a LOT Miss Dawn, now my nose has been broken four times!!!!!

Louis Marzullo

The Bonnie Brawler gets my vote. Simple, to the point, on the nose. That last one was a signal to quit 😄

Bill W

It is a signal to quit because I can't top it. 😀 My coup de grace. I have more but they're not as good.

Ragnar Miersch

A lifetime ago. Amateur, my record was 0-3-1. I quickly realized my talents lied elsewhere.

Ragnar Miersch

How about "The Bonny Blonde Bomber".

Louis Marzullo

Uh-oh. I think we have a new winner! It was really a group effort. Only it's "bonnie" 😁

Louis Marzullo

Dawn, did you recognize Talia Shire (Adrian) as the same actress who played Connie in The Godfather films?

Bartleby

So are you not going to tell Dawn who the actress who played Adrian is?

Bartleby

You think she’ll remember automatically by name? Connie was the daughter of the Godfather and sister who was being beat by her husband in the first film. Talia Shire is also the real life sister of Godfather director, Francis Ford Coppola. She’s also the real life mother of an actor named Jason Schwartzman. You saw him in the movie Grand Budapest Hotel

james flack

Come on people, it's so obvious that I'm almost ashamed to show everyone up......And in this corner weighing in at a very slim weight of eight- and one-half stones......Dawn Marie..."The Scottish Shetland", formally known as, "Helen of Heather", but to all of us fans, we just know her as, "Best Boxer Ever". 🤔😎

Bill W

$40 in 1975 is about $230 today...and no, that isn't much. Luckily he has the job working for Gazzo, such that it is. Also, there wasn't a huge variety of athletic shoes back then. Most were kind of multi-purpose.

Bill W

The turtles (both female Red Eared Sliders) are still alive but Stallone did not keep them. There were a few articles going around that featured an Instagram photo of Stallone with the turtles that he had taken for Creed II. They were kept by Joseph Marks, the owner of the pet store where they got them for the first Rocky movie. They were 44 at the time of the photo.

Bill Bryant

Really not liking a picture of you with cuts and bruises. If that ever happened you'd have a whole fan base ready to fly to Scotland to kick someone's ass!

Bill W

We don't know much about Rocky's mom. Maybe she split, but we know his dad told him he "wasn't born with much of a brain", so maybe Rocky never tried hard in school..probably matriculated through the system and later dropped out of high school. All he knows is boxing and whatever he picked up on the streets of Philly. He's not socially awkward..he talks to the guys in the bar, the guys in the gym, the young girl (Marie), Adrian, the pet shop manager Gloria etc. But when he's on his FIRST DATE with Adrian, he's understandably nervous. He wants to impress her, but he has nothing to talk about except boxing, so that's what he does. Adrian's mother as much as told her she wasn't beautiful. Paulie calls her a loser. So Adrian never saw herself as beautiful or worthy of attention from a man, or anyone for that matter. So she doesn't know how to act when Rocky shows her attention. She's just shy and introverted. She didn't keep Paulie from getting married. Paulie is an alcoholic and doesn't have much going for him otherwise. I guarantee he wasn't attracting mates. I don't believe Rocky and Adrian are autistic. The only "spectrum" is the sports arena! 😀

Bill W

How much could they have been charging for 1 room slum tenements?

Louis Marzullo

Sorry James, but the poll closed with "The Bonnie Blonde Bomber"!! One-third credit each to Bill W, Ragnar & C.A. Jon. You still get Best Dad Joke of the Week! 🏆😄

Bill W

I'm sorry, but I'm literally not getting those. Shetland is a location, and Dawn doesn't reside there. Helen?

Louis Marzullo

Well-said, Bill. But I do want to, not so much defend Paulie but put his being such a jerk in context... There's a portrait of him on the dresser in military uniform (Navy? Marines? Help!). Was he in 'Nam? If so, that would eff him up more than a little. Could explain the alcoholism. Or maybe it's inherited from his dad. Also, his job is a killer. Even Rocky found it exhausting. When Rocky grabs him after Adrian runs into her bedroom he cries, "I can't haul meat no more!" And Rocky stops himself from smacking him... Burt Young is a helluvan actor! It's hard to see the pathos because Paulie obviously wants to look like a tough guy all the time but he is a tragic figure. A bitter jerk, yes, but still worthy of compassion, imo.

Louis Marzullo

Maybe he owed more than a month... The place doesn't look bad from the outside. More of a row-house than tenement. Rocky just not much of a housekeeper, as Dawn noted more than once! 😄

Bill W

I wasn't attacking Paulie, I was just saying it wasn't Adian's fault he's not married.

james flack

OK, Bill, here goes.....It's all a play on words.... (Italian Stallion-Scottish Shetland and Apollo Creed- Helen of Heathers.) 🧐 P.S. You're not the first person to question my choice of word salads.

Louis Marzullo

I didn't say (or imply, I think) that you were attacking him. I think we agree he's a generally crappy person at this point in the saga. Again, I was just trying to give the crappiness some depth & perspective... Now Buddy, Gazzo's driver. That's just a scumbag that deserves an ass-kicking. I got damn prostate issues, too, & I don't act like that! 😄

Louis Marzullo

Our Dawn Marie: The ONLY female reactor who wanted more action, less romance in Rocky! 🤣 But I think that will change... Oh & Dawn: "Eye of the Tiger" is good but it can't carry "Gonna Fly Now"'s jock-strap!! 😁

james flack

I have always been 1 to 4give and 4get 99 out of 100 Xs, but what P did 2 R in V was completely un4givable....P.S. And as far as Buddy's unsolicited advice, where did R and A end up in II....🤷‍♂️😎

Bill W

Louis, I also wasn't trying to untangle the ball of yarn that is Paulie in those 2 sentences. I was only trying to clear Adrian of any responsibility for his bachelorhood. 😀

Bill W

"Gonna Fly Now", and "You Take My Heart Away", which plays low-key at 2 different times are epic. As you said, "Eye of the Tiger" is iconic too, but it's a different animal. (pun fully intended) 😀

Louis Marzullo

@ Richard Stokes: With those hands?? Peterhead Pounder, maybe. Dawn's more George Foreman than Ali. She even said she can't dance!😄

jeff hamilton

Have you watched "Cinderella Man" yet?

Richard Stokes

Louis I guess it kind of depends on how good at fighting Dawn is at the end of her training and/or how scary her opponents are! In my mind Ali was the dancer- 'dance like a butterfly, sting like a bee', the Prancer character in my head is just concerned with being scared and trying to run away inside the ring!

Louis Marzullo

🤣 Good stuff, Richard. Only it was "FLOAT like a butterfly..." My dad adored Ali ever since he won the gold medal at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. My parents were still in Italy then (tiny town near Naples) & Ali was like an entity from another planet, even at age 18. They were captivated by his beauty, speed, agility, grace & showmanship on their little 15" B&W TV!

Bartleby

@Louis Marzullo If she found Rocky boring that doesn’t hold much hope for Raging Bull

Louis Marzullo

Well, Rocky wasn't Clerks for Dawn. Started sluggish but she came around. Classic slow-burn. A standard B.M.E. by the end of the outro!

Bartleby

You know what I’m thinking. I’m thinking she watched No Country for Old Men, and didn’t like it. And now Dawn feels bad about putting out three videos in a row for movies she didn’t like. Especially when two of those movies are Oscar winners for best picture. So now Dawn is doing a reaction for a movie that she believes she’ll like to post that before No Country. That’s just a shot in the dark, but I bet you a coke that’s what’s going on.

Bartleby

I kind of thought she just felt obligated to say she liked it at the end and give it a BME because originally she felt exactly the opposite. I think it really has to do with her preconceptions of what the film was going to be. She has a tendency to become more invested in her own theories over what is actually happening on the screen and being presented by the film. Like when Dawn watched the end of 12 Monkeys and the film was showing Bruce Willis’s character as a little boy and the time loop being dreamed of and talked about was now realizing, but Dawn needed to know who was holding the hand of little boy Willis as if that was more important because some theory she imagined that she needed to be right. Just take what the film is presenting you Dawn.

Louis Marzullo

Jeez, I hope you're wrong 🙁. Was really looking forward to her excitedly proclaiming "I quite like him!!" about Anton the way she did with Buffalo Bill in "Silence"! 😄. If it's just the usual copyright issues, please make it a diet Coke for me!

Nathan Wolff

I hope that she is okay. Remember she had that health scare late last year.

Bartleby

She might have liked the character of Anton but there’s a whole lot of rest of that movie that isn’t Anton

Louis Marzullo

Yes, I agree. It's a masterpiece... Oh, with plenty of ice & a lemon wedge, if it's not too much trouble. Thanks! 😁

Bartleby

Looks like I owe you a Diet Coke Louis. Well maybe half of one. Dawn didn’t place another movie reaction before No Country but it didn’t exactly get a “Best Movie Ever!!!” either did it.

Louis Marzullo

Maybe Dawn needs a new category of reaction: The "Upon Further Review, Best. Movie. Ever." after a 2nd watch for films that defy or upend conventional tropes & expectations, like Rocky (more love story, character development than sports action) & No Country...(where to even begin??). We could use little snack emojis to challenge, like the NFL. If Dawn gets, say, a half-dozen she has to watch the movie again. So we'll just keep that D.C. (20 oz. bottle please) on ice in the cooler for now. 😄
