It's considered a Neo-Western. Western set in modern times. Another great one is Hell or High Water (2016; Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Jeff Bridges). You are correct...it gets better with the 2nd viewing. His name was Chigurh. (pronounced sh'GURR).

Tommy Lee Jones explains what the device is. It's used for knocking out cattle prior to slaughter. It's called a captive bolt pistol. The blast of highly compressed air shoots out a small steel piston about 2cm.

You want a crime suspense thriller that isn’t chilled like this movie was, but balls to the walls! “Cape Fear” (1991) It stars Robert Deniro and the actress who played Mallory Knox in Natural Born Killers, Juliet Lewis. Both Robert Deniro and Juliet Lewis were nominated for Oscars for their performance in this film.

Dawn is getting it. Movies as an art. Movies as something entertaining yet make you think and question. Make you feel. It’s a journey.

To me the 1962 "Cape Fear" is more darker and more sinister. Deniro does a great job acting in the movie but his villain is not a evil as Robert Mitchum was. Just my opinion.

With the performance in this film and in James Bond's "Skyfall", Javier Bardem is a spectacular bad guy!

The film's unusual structure works to highlight that this is a philosophical film dressed in neo-western clothes. In fact, Ethan Coen studied philosophy at university - and I detect the influence of an 18th century German philosopher called Kant on this film. Kant argued that strategic calculations should not form the basis for moral actions. For example, if we make a promise, we should keep it, regardless of the consequences. And that's why Chigurh goes to kill Moss' widow even though there is no strategic reason for him to do it. All he is doing is keeping his promise which was morally solid (unlike the offer Carson Wells makes to Moss, which is a bunch of BS). But then Carla Jean highlights Chirgurh's morally weak offer to revise the promise based on a coin toss - no, she says, you have to take moral responsibility for your action and not just defer to the chance fall of a coin.

1991 Cape Fear directed by Martin Scorsese is so much a better film than the original! Deniro’s performance is legendary and the the scene/relationship between Max and the daughter is so much smarter, sophisticated, and more tense and nerve racking as a result. No spoilers!!!

Bartleby

Well she missed all those lessons when it came to Natural Born Killers LOL
