Shane often described by my mum as "Jesus with a gun". I've only watched it once and that was a long time ago. Good excuse for me to sit and watch it again Dawn thanks xxx

Bartleby

Does this mean the next western will be a John Wayne western! Again, nominate “Stagecoach” (1939) This was John Wayne’s breakout role.

resinmonkey .

I'm very happy you liked it. I knew you would, Many people consider this film a classic because of the themes you mentioned at the outro. This was one of Jack Palance's {Wilson} earliest movies, he made a career as a movie bad guy.

Robert Inman

I find the inclusion of "noble" heroes to be characteristic of these older films, rather than the later fashion of anti-heroes. The movies were an escape from reality instead of trying to depict reality.

Louis Marzullo

Or did reality just get darker? This arc will eventually bring Dawn to "No Country for Old Men", hopefully

james flack

Louis, you have never given me a reason to disagree with you...........until now! In my in entire life of 75 years and after watching thousands of movies, there is only one that I wish could "unsee", and that one is NCOM. Just sayin'....🙈

JL Green

This movie is custom made for Dawn Marie!BTW Shane was still alive when he left town!!!

james flack

Louis, not without revealing spoilers. But that doesn't mean it has no cinematic qualities, it just means that it has none for me. Now, to change the subject back to "Shane": When this film came out, Westerns were a means to teach kids the difference between, not right and wrong, but the difference between what is the right thing to do vs the smart thing to do. Lots of times they are the same but not always. Also, most were shown at Saturday Matinees, rather than on weekday evenings. 🤔

Louis Marzullo

Great point about the spoilers, James, but after Dawn sees it, I'm still going to be fascinated to know why THAT film, out of thousands you've seen, is THE one you wish you hadn't, more than any other. Such an interesting (and for me bewildering) choice for that particular designation! Mine would be a toss-up between "Last House on the Left" (original) & "Hostel". I'm guessing you've never seen either of those 😣

Retro Maven

Hey DM! Looks like you are back to yourself again! To answer your question the little boy is Brandon DeWilde who went on to many roles in TV and the movies until 1972. He was 10 years old when he filmed this movie in 1952. Shane is Alan Ladd, who was a movie star of the era but is equally famous for giving us the lovely Cheryl Ladd of the 70s TV his show Charlie's Angels. Thanks again, Alan!!

james flack

Louis, I'm flattered that you are intrigued by my biased film opinion. It basically has to do with certain characters reminding me of individuals I have actually come in contact with, in my lifetime. For example, Tommy in "Goodfellows" or Evelyn in "Play Misty for Me". But Anton took it to a whole other level, he literally scared the bej---- out of me. Just thinking about him, even now, still gives me the willies. Hope this answers your question, now let's talk about something pleasant, like maybe Dawn reacting to "Quigley Down Under" or maybe a Mike Myers movie. Just sayin'.......

Louis Marzullo

That's pretty amazing, James! I've personally known some psychopaths in my life (some in my own family) but nothing close to those 3. Glad you are still here to talk about it! I've never seen Quigley but would love to see Dawn react to Mike Myers' "All Things Scottish" skits on SNL 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Rob Jones

I would like to recommend a western called Silverado. Great cast and story.

Bill W

James, Louis - I'd like to get "So I Married An Axe Murderer" on Dawns radar. That way she'll get a taste of All Things Scottish, a precurser to Fat Bastard and Shrek, and early "Kramer" appearance, Phil Hartman, and the great scenes with Alan Arkin.

james flack

Louis, did you just say, you never saw QDU? Matthew Quigley is the I Ching of all fictional Western cowboy figures. He is the proverbial hero who does all the right things for all of the right reasons. He is.........You know what, just go watch it, you'll be glad you did. -James

Louis Marzullo

OK, sir! I think it's been a Tom Selleck thing. Always been a wee bit difficult for me to take him seriously as anything more than beefcake. And now those reverse mortgage ads. Ugh. But I will try. Maybe I can find it on YouTube TV. Thanks, James 🤠

Bill W

Laughing at Tom Selleck as "beefcake". I never saw him that way. Beefcakes are usually brainless.

Louis Marzullo

Not necessarily brainless but someone who became famous almost exclusively due to his physical appearance. Very limited range, just don't find him remotely interesting. Maybe Quigley would change that perception? Maybe I'm just envious of his looks? 😂 On the other hand, I love early Brando, Cary Grant, James Dean, Warren Beatty, Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson... so, yeah, it's just that Selleck doesn't do anything for me

Bartleby

Hey Dawn Marie!!! Please consider coming back to Charlie Chaplin with his classic “The Gold Rush” (1925) It’s New Years themed so perfect for the end of the month.

JM63

Need to search for the exact title "The Gold Rush (1925)" on Amazon. Only version with the original score (not a boring piano one)

Mike H.

Great review. A couple of western ideas: "The Shootist", 1976. It was John Wayne's final movie, released just a few years before he died. It was a tribute to his career. Also, "The Quick and the Dead. " It is slightly surrealistic but fun. It had Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe and Sharon Stone.
