The context makes the Riker/Troi romance too weird (odd) for me.

Ian

That thumbnail though 😃 brilliant! Can't wait to watch now 🖖

Banes

that's one uncomfortable expression in the thumbnail! xD

William Rosmer

the bit right after the credits where cmdr riker circles lt riker was just the effects team showing off.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Borrowing a joke from another popular show in the reactor-verse "The subtext is rapidly becoming, well, text." 😬 And on the subject of tension and expressions, we joke about Riker's bemused face or when he uses that nasty side eye, but really it all just boils down to JF being really great with the facial acting. We've had some really great Riker episodes the last little while. As always, excited for next week🖖

Banes

This one's great. It's just great. I love a character driven episode. It's a cool concept, and I like the transporter explanation. But a cool concept only really works when there's a humanity to it. So glad they didn't kill off Tom Riker, as we might have expected. Heartwarming and heartbreaking, this one. It's great to get a deeper look at Riker and Troi's relationship.

Banes

Talking about this episode, Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis both said that in a way, they like Tom Riker more than Will, haha. Tom is less confident but sweeter, they said.

Juan Pablo De La Fuente

I think that Deanna and Will are afraid of that past relation thats makes them both suffer back on those days. Of course second chances are very rare, and for the most of the time, it doesn't work, like in this episode.

William Rosmer

fun bit of trivia the random transporter operator in this episode was played by America's first female African American astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison

Spaceflight Illustration Gateway

This was always one of the ones where the self-reflections it triggers are part of the enjoyment of the story. You can't help but wonder what it'd be like to be in that situation!

Geoff S.

Things in this episode are def. referenced in the future but that's all I'll say. I also think they would look a lot different after the eight years. Especially the hair, his beard and his weight. Next week's episode is pretty great I think as well as the one after.

Kane Is Able

There's no reason to say anything about what's coming in future episodes. That's literally all she ever asks of us.

Kane Is Able

"It's a Riker episode!" Jen has no idea how right she was.

Kane Is Able

Jen is never ever going to allow herself to be beamed now.

Summer

Thomas means twin so fitting, don’t sell yourself short Jen, you would make a good Star Trek character writer

Kane Is Able

Star Trek also made yellow shirt Thomas Riker action figures too, back in the 90s. Really cool alt figure.

Ian

Really enjoyed this one and thought troi was great , fantastic acting on her part . It's easy to have sympathy for all three characters. I'm sure ' will ' after seeing another him (Thomas as we know him now ) must of been questioning his choices over and over and have many regrets no doubt , it had to be hard seeing his past feelings replicated in front of his eyes . How that's going to affect him going forward we shall see but I'm sure those old feelings would have resurfaced in some capacity. Thomas ofc only knows love for Deanna and it's like yesterday for him but it's still difficult for him also however for troi it's a mind trip for sure , will and her have a special bond and she's gotta know being with Thomas would effect will a lot even if he keeps in deep down inside . It's a mess all round and the show somehow left us wondering going forward but also concluding it in a way the viewer can be satisfied to a point .I truly thought Thomas was going to die so now we have a potential chance he may reappear NO SPOILERS!! . Yeah really enjoyed this reaction and Jen's outro was great as always 🖖

I swear I could see the technical and philosophical questions bubbling in that brain of yours, Jen. There's been a lot of debate about the nature of "beaming" a whole person, consciousness and all, to another place using a technology like that and how it would work. (Not to mention what that would say about the idea and nature of the "soul" or spirit.) In the tech manual, they try to explain this by saying that it transports a living being by breaking them down at a quantum level, vs molecular level for inanimate objects via transporters configured for cargo. But then that raises even more questions, and things like this happening (like Kirk split into two Kirk's with halves of his psyche) just make even MORE questions pile on top of the debate.

Over50Gamer

Then again, over-anaysis aside, transporters were thought of as a device for speeding up the plot (and saving money), so it's just plot-magic in the end and we just move along, nothing to see here, pay no attention to it. 😅

Dave Hampton

I really liked your thoughts on promoting Will and having Thomas stay on the show. I always thought Will Riker was a commander longer than would be believable for his character.

Goddess of Empathy

This episode always makes me cry. What a supremely unfair position for both Rikers and Troi. The conversation between Data and Worf is so poignant. I wonder if Riker is always so hard on himself.

Brett Whittaker

I've always really liked this episode...anyway my Netflix automatically started the next episode and its one of my top 5 favourites! So really looking forward to that!!

Brett Whittaker

One thing I wanna bring up... watching by air date, while it serves a purpose for TNG\DS9 do we think its necessary for DS9\VOY? I know what we voted for, just bringing it up as I would rather after TNG to just power through DS9 and watch Voyager separately. JUST AN OPINION DONT COME AT ME.

jon bolton

Obviously i love that this adds to the Troi and Riker relationship, but oddly it's not one of my Season favourites, but only because I think Season 6 has a lot of strong episodes. Jen, think about this, if there was a duplicate of you how would you feel about being given orders by yourself? If it were me i would hate it, and probably think the other me was really arrogant and irritating😂 (edit) i think you kind of answered that during the Worf and Data conversation, and at the end.

Sykonee

Worf: "Two Will Rikers? One ship, ONE Riker!" ~somewhere, Nagilum softly chuckles

Sean Jackson

The original script they were planning, they were going to kill off Will and replace him with Thomas. Thankfully they didn't do that.

Henchman Twenty1

Goofs: When this episode first aired they goofed and forgot to add in a couple audio effects. It's the scene where Tommy was in his quarters and Troi comes to visit him. They didn't add the sounds of the door chime or the door swoosh that happens off screen. He just looks up as if he hears the chime, says to come in, and Troi just walks into the shot and sits down with no door sound to idicate that she entered the room. It was kind of weird, but by the time the episode aired again in reruns they had fixed it. I think there's clips of the goofed scene on YouTube.

Jeff Seely

This is an episode I rarely go back to. It's one of my least favorites in the series. Not because of the character interactions -- those are solid (especially that one Ten Forward scene between Lt. Riker and Troi that Jen really liked). The reason I don't like it is that the concept muddies the waters on what the transporter actually does. If it really is a TRANSPORTER, then it's just moving a single entity from one location to another. The matter of one person gets converted to energy which is then "beamed" to a location within the transporter's range before being converted back into matter. It's a one-to-one process -- or at least it should be. For two Rikers to come from one transport, it would have to suddenly be a one-to-two process, which makes absolutely no sense. There wouldn't be enough material going into the process for two Rikers to come out of it. Unfortunately, the only way to resolve this is by saying that the transporter isn't really a transporter and that it's more like a fax machine. It creates a perfect facsimile of the person on the other end from whatever matter is available to it. So, what happens to the person who originally went into the transporter? I don't know. Dead, I guess. It's a disturbing thought, but it's the only way I know of dealing with the issue that the writers raised in this episode by, in my opinion, not properly thinking through the implications of what they were putting out there. It's obviously not the most important thing in the world, but it does irk me. And before anyone brings up Barclay in the episode 'Realm of Fear', this facsimile theory even works with that episode since we don't have any in-between moments with Barclay during transport. From his perspective, he dematerializes in one location and then is instantly in the other location. For all we know, the Barclay going into the transport process is being killed and a new Barclay with all of the old one's memories is being created on the other end.

TC Green

I agree. Watching TNG/DS9 together makes sense for a few reasons but those reasons don’t apply to Voyager. I don’t want to say more because of spoilers

TC Green

The writers considered killing off Will, promoting Data and having Thomas join the crew.

William Rosmer

They made action figures for like every named character. I had one of the alien captain from darmok as a kid

TC Green

Fun fact: The transporter chief at 15:30 is played by Dr. Mae Jemison, an astronaut and the first African American woman in space.

Kane Is Able

The DS9 advocates all of a sudden don't want to share the reactions. I mean, we're a long ways away from that, but you're definitely planning ahead.

Kane Is Able

TBH- This episode is too good for me to care that much. It was a near impossible scenario that needed near impossible set of circumstances to happen. That's all I need in my head cannon.

Lex

I like that you envision alternate storylines (fan fiction, in a way). I watched several episodes *portions* on break at McDonald’s when the show aired. I’d often miss the end of an episode and would just have to imagine how it might have ended. Oh, the heartbreak when that happened. I’ve rewatched TNG so many times now 😂

Lee R.

Yes, it was a big surprise and I really enjoyed seeing her on the show at the time! She mentioned that watching Uhura as a child made her interested in NASA and the space program. Another fun fact was that Nichele Nichols was there on set for her filming!

Sonny Smith

Every time I watch this episode (Which I really like, btw) and Data asks Worf about encountering a double and not getting along with them...I'm like 'Bruh, you're literally the only person on the ship this has happened to! Worf should be asking you what it's like.'

Fanchman

The only thing bad about staying with air date through Voyager is it would stretch out the TNG movie reactions over a couple of years. If I remember right, the fourth TNG movie takes place after the Voyager series ends.

Fanchman

In my humble opinion, if we had transporters, the original person would cease to exist and the new person would would just carry on with the memories. I would never agree to be transported.

Fanchman

Spoiler here for future shows . . . . . . . . . . . . . I think the producers of Enterprise made a big mistake by introducing transporters right away even if it was a new feared technology that was rarely used for humans. Should not have existed on the first version of the Enterprise.

rubberkidney

great episode only possible on trek

Chris Biebel

In college I took a philosophy class that dealt a lot with what is a person and what makes them unique, etc. This episode got me thinking about that again when it aired. From a philosophical stand point, since the Riker that existed before the accident has the same ties to both new Rikers and they are obviously different people, the original Riker actually ceased to exist at the point of the accident. You can't say one or the other has a greater claim to being the original and since the original was one being, it can't now be two unique beings. Therefore, that original Riker no longer exists.

Mastervodo

This episode should have been called "Deep Space Friend Zone".

Fanchman

I absolutely believe if we ever had transporter technology, the person who rematerializes on the other end is a copy. The original person would cease to exist. That's fine for inanimate objects, but not living beings.

Michael B.

I like Worf's double take after he admits that he's not easy to get along with and Data immediately agrees. 🤣

Anthony Hernandez

lol and she’d be able to harmonize with herself during the intro

Patrick47

You may be confused about how the transporter works in this episode. Normally, your theory is correct; beaming is essentially a one-to-one transfer of a person or object's pattern and not a copying of it. The only reason a second Riker was created in this instance is explicitly due to the unique properties of Nervala IV, which caused what was only supposed to be one pattern to duplicate and materialize within the second confinement beam, instead of only the single pattern materializing (as was intended and assumed by everyone involved). In other words, the Potemkin's transporter chief did use a second confinement beam, but only as an emergency backup measure that was never intended (or indeed, thought possible) to result in a second pattern materializing. Whatever matter or energy was required to cause a second pattern to form was supplied entirely by the planet's unusual distortion field. As for your theory concerning how beaming works in Realm of Fear, I think you're confused there, as well. We clearly do see the in-between moments with Barclay during the transport process, as there is no other way he would've been able to perceive and interact with the both the microbes and the trapped Yosemite crewmembers in the buffer. However, this episode, along with a few other scattered examples of people talking or moving during transport, are unfortunate anomalies with regard to how beaming is most often shown and described: a dematerialization of the subject at the quantum level, which is only rematerialized at the destination. Nobody in the process of being beamed in such a manner should be conscious or capable of any voluntary motion.

Jeff Seely

When I said that we don't see the in-between moments with Barclay, what I meant was that we don't see anything from his perspective about being shot through space to his destination. In fact, it seems to be something that nobody consciously perceives during the beaming process. Without that continuity, you have a blank that can be filled with the aforementioned facsimile theory. I agree that nobody should be capable of talking or moving during transport. One movie scene I found particularly annoying in that regard was a scene in Star Trek II where they're just having a casual conversation while beaming. Let's say that your theory is correct and that whatever material was required to make the second Riker came from the planet's unusual distortion field. That would mean that the two Rikers are not equal. One is a one-to-one transport of the original Riker and the other is definitively a copy. I'm inclined to think that the copy is Lt. Riker, but wouldn't it be wild if the copy were Commander Riker?

TigerMyth

This is one of those financial monetary inconsistencies. If they don't have money, what is the point of poker? There are no stakes?

Kaleigh Kaos

Interesting take. I've played all sorts of board games with pretend money that has no actual value but has a winner who ends up with a large sum. (The game of LIFE, Monopoly, and Pay Day are three examples). I've played a number of video games with economies that aren't real and have no impact on my actual life or the real world, but still, coins and wealth exist in them. I've even played poker against my computer just for fun while I was waiting for something to pass the time or with my friends for just poker chips that we put away at the end of the night.

TigerMyth

The game you mention have a much higher level of strategy than poker. If you can go all in every single hand because you aren't losing anything, it destroys the game. Also when you have nothing to lose, you are less likely to have tells because you aren't nervous. You have nothing to lose. We can just disagree. I think the game of poker would be ruined if money had no value. Quarks would be empty if there were no stakes on the Dabo. Does that mean it would be ruined for everyone? No, but the game would play completely different to standard poker and someone will to go all in on every hand would ruin the game for everyone.

Desmond

I don't know if it would be better for morale and crew harmony for the senior officers to be routinely wagering money on poker games. But to answer your question, my interpretation has always been that they play it because they find it fun.
