Tom W.

Happy Friday, Jen.

Kristin

Oh yeah!! Been looking forward to this one!!

BJ Stephens

NGL as much as I love this series, I don't care much for this episode as a season finale. There's a bit to much that happens that doesn't feel right when it comes to how the federation characters handle their interactions with the culture of the people who are hosting their presence. It smacks a bit too much of human values superior, Bajoran inferior and should be disregarded. That being said I'm very much looking forward to the next season.

Summer

Friday Star Trek is great

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

A lot gets made of the serialized/non serialized differences between DS9 and earlier Trek. And that's all fair, but another way that I often prefer to think about it is that DS9 really gets into the politics of ST. Not only on a macro level but being on a station that remains in one part of space allows us to delve into those things on a micro level as well, Bajor, Cardassia, all that stuff. We've touched on a bit of it up until now but between Duet and now ItHotP we're really starting to jump headlong into some of the stuff that we've been setting up in that regard. I'm really excited to keep moving forward, engage!

Ron

The actress who played Vedic Winn is Oscar-winner Louise Fletcher and is one of my favorite character actresses. She was an amazing character actress and was especially good in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)" which I highly recommend if you get a chance. I also really liked her in Brainstorm (1983).

Lee

TNG and DS9 were very different shows. Whereas TNG lacked much in the way of character development, DS9 was built on it. Skipping the first season of TNG wouldn't cause any serious issues in that department (with the sole exception of Tasha Yar and her relation to Data), but skipping DS9 S1 would mean missing the starting point for each of the regulars (and a few of the supporting cast, as well) and the progress they make individually. Sisko is obviously the character that shows the most change from the season premiere to the season finale, but as Jen noted above, many seeds were planted here. There is much growth to come.

Laura Thornley

The mark of a good actor is playing a truly vile character so effortlessly. Jack Gleeson is another example (Joffrey from Game of Thrones).

Opti_Frog

Good social commentary without getting preachy or too on-the-nose. Louise Fletcher is perfectly cast as Vedek Winn. Nurse Ratched as a scrupleless religious fanatic? Scary stuff. 😅

Kristin

Jack Gleeson left acting for a while because people transferred their hate of Joffrey to him.

Zork

good to know.

Ron

Thank you for the correction. Updated.

Zork

I'm glad you enjoyed this. Some people really harp on first-season Star Trek but this season had some real solid ones; my personal favorites being: Emissary, Past Prologue, A Man Alone, Captive Pursuit, Dax, Move Along Home (because who doesn't enjoy watching Quark beg), The Nagus, Progress, Duet, and In The Hands Of The Prophets.

alyssagynepuppy

i mean in recent times that hasn't really stopped shows from doing it anyway, just to then get cancelled

Vina

In the US in the 1990s, the science vs religion in school debate - specifically regarding creationism vs evolution - was really coming to a head, so the episode was very topical

Mastervodo

There is no other Star Trek Character in any series that I loathe more than Winn. Winn is the Delores Umbridge of space X1000. She is hypocritical self-serving delusional condescension personified. A curse upon the writers who ever thought up such a character and introduced this idea to the universe. Fie! Fie I say to thee! She is evil, and no good will come of her!

Mayan Luevano

Was waiting for this one, easily one of the best DS9 episodes that continues to be relevant.

Banes

I was one of those who skipped most of Season One - but I watched the whole season before your reactions started and actually liked it quite a bit. Looking forward to the continuation! This one was kind of heavy. Some deep ideas here, and not many easy answers. Lovin it!

Sykonee

After several decades of Season Ending Cliffhangers trying to outdo each other to keep an audience invested after Summer Breaks (not just Trek but a lot of shows in general), I've really come to appreciate how this one just... doesn't. Instead, it's a quiet reflective moment between the two main leads, putting a little bow on the season as a whole, letting us soak in how far we've come from their initial tumultuous interactions. It's no "Mister Worf, fire.", but "Perhaps we've made some progress after all." as S1's concluding line carries so much weight with the benefit of hindsight. /also, d'at music cue at the climax!

Paul Peavler

She sucks, yeah, but that’s what actually makes her such a good character for the episode.

Paul Peavler

Ah yes, Station Dad vs Space Karen, a DS9 classic! I’m always on train Station Dad.

Over50Gamer

Space Karen: "I want to speak to the commander of this station right NAO!"

Over50Gamer

And the battle is still raging, what with certain parties trying to dissolve the Dept. Of Edu and Bible belt states trying to get the Bible back in classrooms.

Over50Gamer

Yes, that was my favorite part of Move Along Home too! "PLEEEEEEZE!!" 🤣

Over50Gamer

Another similar thing is happening to an actress in season 2 of a show; Jen just watched the first season of it. It's sad when some people either can't or won't separate the actor from the character.

Richard Powers Hardt

and of course, all of that make her one of the top 5 villains in a show with great villains!!

TC Green

Winn is such a loathsome character. Great villian

No spoilers - Season 1 is definitely a pretty strong start as shows go, especially compared to TNG , and even as someone rewatching, I feel like there's only a couple of episodes NOT worth your time, maybe 5 tops depending on your interests. But I do know that when I get finished the show and went back to rewatch what I considered "core" episodes with ties to the overall central plot of the series, there are very few in this season, at least involving certain characters and their introductions and story progression. The rest are basically all standalone episodes, which isn't a bad thing, it just puts a bit more distance between this season and the ones that follow. It's one of those things where, at least on rewatches, if you skipped Season 1, you wouldn't be missing much. Although you'd be foolish not to watch at least the last two episodes, as I did my second time around. Though I'm a fan of Captive Pursuit too, and Progress is definitely a highlight that I missed on my first revisit that I was glad to be reminded of this time around. But it's definitely not something someone should skip the first time they watch, there's so much more good than bad here.

Ian

Epic thumbnail 😀🔥 a good finale yes that's right the finale already can you believe it one season down in what feels like no time at all . O'Brien's assistant gave a look early in the episode and it gave away something was up with her so from that moment on I was waiting for the reveal . Winn was the worst yes she had strong beliefs but come on lady you don't force your way on others . Compromise is a thing for a reason 🤷 going forward fractures will open up I'm sure but you gotta be impressed with the way sisko handles things 👌 looking forward to seeing what season 2 brings and continuing our journey with you Jen . Make it so ! 🖖🔥

Kevin Sommerfield

Winn is played by the same actress who played Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Mastervodo

That whole Intelligent Design movement. Bunch of liars and hypocrites and delusional people. Discovery Institute. For those "in the know" - it shows in my avatar! RAmen!

phillip giroux

Yup, not a cliffhanger but rather a stage setter for the future I'd say.

jon bolton

Great reaction Jen to another episode i love. I really like Season 1, i can honestly say there aren't any episodes i don't like, which is rare for a full Season. I personally prefer some later Seasons, but there is nothing bad about this one in my opinion.

William Rosmer

i always just look at move along home as a tos premise done in ds9.

Anthony Hernandez

While the plots in season 1 are not always works of art, every episode has at least 1 great character moment or character development. While they may not be worth watching if you’ve seen the entire series 7 times before, I think they’re very valuable and even necessary the first time through.

Anthony Hernandez

I can see your point, it is not subtle in how it shows Bajorans reacting in the very clear “bad guy” role regarding their beliefs.

Chris Biebel

I think the airdate order decision was a good call. It allows things to flow like how it was when we first watched them as they came out.

Brett Whittaker

Delores Umbridge Um I mean Kai Winn enters the show!

Brett Whittaker

I had actually completely forgotten what happened in this episode so it was fun for me to watch it again! Season 1 done!

John DiGiantomasso

100 years ago in 1925, Tennessee passed a law that ONLY biblical creation could be taught in schools. A teacher in Dayton, TN brought up Evolution and the Scopes Monkey Trial was launched. So big tht a losing Democrat presidential candidate argued for the prosecution to keep evolution out. That 's how big it was. Today I could see the same thing in a blue state where Kamala Harris did the prosecution of a teacher who referenced the Bible. A total flip of society in 100 years.

Mr. Mike's Multiverse

There is a book out that covers the Rules of Acquisition. The Ferengi Rules of Acquisition by Ira Steven Behr. I really enjoyed re-watching season 1 with you, Jen. It was the first time I had watched the entire season since the original airing. It was much stronger than I remembered.

Summer

Watching with Jen helped me remember my first watching of this season and reminded me I liked it, it is one of the best season 1s

Bobby Coolbreeze

The Bojoran’s and the Prophets loom large over the course of the series and will tie into other interesting stories and events To be honest the spiritual stuff wasn’t my favorite aspect of the series but it does serve a purpose in telling the overall story of the show.

Bobby Coolbreeze

Season 1 is your introduction to the characters and and their story arcs This first season imo was better than TNG season 1 Season 2 opens up in spectacular fashion and I think the show hits its stride and takes off much sooner than TNG did. TNG didn’t take off till season 3. We do get a few episodes that are pretty mundane here and there but overall it has a more serialized episode arc than TNG.

Collinson

It's been fun rewatching this season with you and the community as I haven't watched this show in a long time. I feel they were like most shows, especially spin off's, trying to find their feet and decide how much the show should differ from TNG. I do remember feeling like the show grew better and better each season so I'm really looking forward to next seasons reactions.

sash

Season 1 done. when you see season 3 wonards you'll understand why we love the show so much :D

George Foot

She's a Vedek, not a Kai

Desmond

Yeah, season 2 is already great, IMO. A lot of great episodes, that setup a lot of better stuff later on, even if there are still a few clunkers.

Marcus Hicks

Whilst Season 1 is the weakest season of the show-as most first seasons tend to be-I definitely feel it gets off to a much stronger start than Season 1 of TNG or Voyager. It does much better at establishing the bulk of the characters and their future arcs, as well as the current situation in that part of the galaxy. With the foundations laid, Seasons 2 & 3 can now really get to work with more long-form storytelling.

I live in Texas. A new Texas law requires public schools to display a poster or framed copy of the Ten Commandments in each classroom. The law, signed by Governor Greg Abbott, take effect at the start of the 2025-2026 school year. They want a theocracy.

Clay F

I remember this episode, which is still relevant today.
