really tough listening to bits of this in 2023 now that Justin Roiland is firmly in the "cool then" list

It might be because I was born and raised in the dead center of the Midwest (where “tradition” is valued much high than the safety of your children), but I never saw any alternatives to trick-or-treating until recently in my area. I trick-or-treated until about 2009 or 2010, and it was always a suburban thing that happened until around 9:00 P.M. In recent years there have been these trunk-or-treats that have cropped up in the area, where people all drive to a parking lot and give kids candy out of the trunk of their cars. I guess it’s technically safer because it’s an event with more adult supervision. However, I do think if I was a kid I would be a lot more creeped out getting candy from some guy out of the back of his ‘95 LeBaron. And maybe that’s really what Halloween is all about

I'm legitimately shocked it took you guys THIS long to cover Gravity Falls... but hey, better late than never! For me my personal favourite episode, or at least the most well-rounded, might be Northwest Mansion Mystery. It's the perfect mix of character development, story, and even a bit of horror. I also loved all the jokes people were making all about the weird shit on Disney+... BUT I'm also kinda glad they are on there. We need older films on streaming too dammit, even the crappy ones. I'm also a LITTLE scared too that Disney might actually pull a Netflix and take stuff AWAY and bring it back at certain points. Pedantic correction: Alex Hirsch didn't actually grow up with Twin Peaks, in fact, he didn't watch it in full until he had already pitched the series. That said the mix of the Pacific Northwest setting + the supernatural + quirky characters were a likely influence on the series as a whole, and there are direct references to Twin Peaks in some episodes.

Born in 89 and we had trick or treating on Halloween at night There was a trunk or treat by us but we'd hit that and continue on

I used to be awful at dealing with scary things as a youngster, so one time when a friend sent me one of those pop-up-scary-face mazes over MSN Messenger, I was angry at him for like a week afterward because of how easily frightened I got. Ironically now, I'm incredibly into horror movies and nothing phases me so it's funny to think back on... -- Also as someone a decent bit younger than Bob & Hank, I can confirm that when I was still tick-or-treating (stopped going in either 2007 or 2008 at age 11 or 12), it was still done around dusk on the actual Halloween night.

Give Stranger Things a shot! The first two seasons are legitimately amazing, while the 3rd is slightly masturbatory for the mid 80s, the treacly nonsense is merely emotional buffer for the EXTREMELY well done character horror that constitutes the last half of the season.

Also, seconding that Trick or Treating still goes extremely hard in Buffalo in TYOOL 2019. Kids are out making trouble until the sun goes down.

Eve of the Stars

I would strongly recommend Star vs. the Forces of Evil. It's a funny show that really evolves with each season, with likable characters and an overarching story full of mysteries and action. Also Disney Channel's second show (after Pepper Ann) with a female showrunner. It just ended this year and is my favorite Disney Channel cartoon (although I have a feeling Owl House will soon take that title).

Loved the episode! Had been waiting for a Gravity Falls one. Also, regarding the stores that only open during the Halloween season, we also have them in Mexico. Well, I don't know if in ALL of Mexico, but at least where I'm from (northeast) we have them.

I live for any moment where Henry can find a way to talk about On Cinema at the Cinema and for when Bob finally gets around to watching it all.

Thank you so much for doing Gravity Falls! It's my favorite show ever! There is not a single bad episode! It always pushed the envelope for creepy Disney content and was a blast to decipher all the clues as the show aired live. I followed the Cipher Hunt very closely when it happened. It's impressive what thousands of fans online can do when they put their minds together, like building an all-yellow puzzle or tracking clues across the country. I learned about Alex Hirsch way back when Off the Wall was featured on the front page of YouTube many years ago. I didn't remember who he was by the time I watched Gravity Falls. Then I decided to look up Off the Wall again to see what that guy was up to. I was blown away that he went on to create the show I was currently in love with! Now my comments: Your story was the first I've heard of this weird mall trick-or-treating tradition. Growing up in the 90's and early 2000's, my neighborhood still did trick-or-treating during sunset around people's houses. There was always one house that was famous for giving out a can of soda, a full size candy bar, and a dollar. It was my favorite stop of the night. Correction: Brenda is not voiced by Alex. She's played by Carl Faruolo.
