Bob reached new heights of awesomeness for me by revealing he voted for Nader in 2000

So... Someone called "Henry" whose nickname was (possibly) based on a dog? I didn't know Indiana Jones hosted this podcast! :P

The military scam still hits hard. I was a senior in high school during 9/11 and hadn't officially committed to a college and I remember my dad being nervous about another draft and wanted me to commit to a college asap, though I think it was an urban legend that you could get over the draft because of such, though I'm not really sure. I encountered a few people once I got to college though that had signed up for the National Gard pre-9/11 to get through school. Those pitches from the recruiters were practically criminal as they basically told you "It's easy, just one weekend a month with no threat of deployment!" and sure enough, those guys got deployed. I have to disagree with the FFIX talk though. It sounds revisionist to me as I recall nothing but praise when that game came out. Everyone I knew and the publications I read at the time were all happy to go back to "traditional" Final Fantasy. It sold less than FFVII and VIII, but still moved millions of copies. I attribute the fewer sales to people actually having a negative reaction to FFVIII and the launch of the PS2. Some of the "normies" who jumped onto the RPG bandwagon because of the FFVII hype machine had probably dropped as well. It's a good game, though I still prefer VII as far PSX Final Fantasy games go.

“Trifecta of gross green babies” made me audibly laugh on my walk this morning. Also it’s funny that we’ve gone from “yeah we stole the election what are you going to do” to “why won’t these libtards let us steal the election” in 20 short years.

I love the Jesus ball joke. It's based on how a properly inflated basketball should bounce 60% of the height it is dropped from. That second bounce should have been 1.08m but it bounced higher defying physics. It's the ball version of walking on water.

Since you touched on the election fuckery and named Katherine Harris, I'm surprised you didn't touch on the fact that on first airing the end of this ep was pre-empted by a Harris press conference. At least in Central Time, we got cut off by Fox News while Bender's trying to guess the word that will trigger the bomb and I had to check usenet reviews to find out how the episode ended!

Gotta love everyone's favorite war criminal being in this episode, also super embarrassed that I enjoyed hitchens so much in my twenties. Also fun story i graduated high school in 2005 so the iraq & afghanistan wars were in full bloom. We had recruiter busses at our high school and one of my friends told the recruiter that he didn't want to die for no reason, the recruiter said hey you can just die crossing the street.

re the "Surprise" act break, I can distinctly remember watching the premiere of this episode at my friend's house and us both losing our shit at that. I think it's my favorite act break in TV history.

With regards to the word 'pimp', I've always hated it ever since I saw a pimp discussing how he beats and manipulates the women who work for him on his HBO special. As for when it became inappropriate, I'd say it's in 2008 when David Shuster said the Clinton campaign 'pimped out' Chelsea. He was suspended at MSNBC for two weeks after a lot of pushback from the Clinton campaign. That doesn't mean it isn't used anywhere though. Whenever a doctor asks a medical student a question in front of a group they call that 'pimping'. At least that was the case at the hospital where my husband did clinical rotations for medical school.

While I know that MASH is late millennial kryptonite, I was sort of surprised to hear you lads give the show such an over the shoulder brush off. For Bob to dismiss Todd Susman as "can't find anything," I hope he meant no video of him as the PA announcer on the show, which never did happen. Susman, however, did appear on at least two episodes of MASH, most notably in season two's "Operation Noselift." He was also one of those ubiquitous 70s (and 80s, 90s...) guys who is still working. I get how MASH seems to have sort have skipped a generation in the 90s, but is very much having a major renaissance right now, with huge popularity on MeTV, Hulu, and WGN. There are also three very popular (and rapidly growing) MASH podcasts, and I expect more soon. I get why MASH is kind of a blind spot in your demographic, but give it another look. But definitely, without the laugh track. Cheers!

I may be a little behind with listening, but great episode! And I'm surprised not to hear Disney's Mulan acknowledged. Given it came out only 2 years earlier, it must have been just as big an influence on the story of War Is The H-Word as Starship Troopers.
