It's time for the first of two holiday cartoons for the end of 2020! After covering Garfield's Halloween toon in 2018, we return again to the Monday-hater's second holiday special. Garfield hates heading to the farm for Christmas, until he sees that he can eat a bunch of stuff and hang out with a rockin' Grandma Arbuckle. All that plus a mix of sad stories and confusing Odie side plots in this week's seasonal podcast!

I have been waiting for you guys to do this episode for a long time I have the VHS of this for all my childhood and watched it every Christmas Eve for as long as I can remember I still do and it’s still a wonderful story and the grandmastory story always makes me tear up a little bit! Happy holidays Talking Simpsons!

This is a great choice - this is just a good, very gentle cartoon that captures a child's view of Christmas without featuring any children.

Haha, yeah Oct was warmer than usual, now it's that bay area chill in December.

I love this special, but also view it as "The one that got away." My family got a VCR for Christmas 1986, so the Christmas season of 1987 was the first time it was in use and that year my mom recorded a bunch of specials, but somehow missed this one. And it's odd, because my mom loved Garfield. My very first stuffed animal was a Garfield in a baseball hat. I can only assume there was a conflict as the tape begins with Mickey's Christmas Carol, which was an NBC presentation that year. It follows with four CBS specials that all aired in blocks on different nights (Frosty with Twas the Night Before Christmas, Charlie Brown with Grinch) followed by more Rankin/Bass (Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Rudolph) before ending with the 87 broadcast of A Muppet Family Christmas. Even more surprising is that there aren't any promos for it as I assume it aired after all of those other specials. Maybe my mom just felt like she had grabbed enough. And for some reason, we never added to that tape, though we watched the tape relentlessly between Thanksgiving and Christmas pretty much every year. I still have that tape, but I've also transferred it to DVD and I put it on every year. My kids are confused why I refuse to fast-forward past the commercials. And yeah, it's gross, but the commercials bring about more nostalgia than some of the specials. I even made it a tradition for a few years as an adult to buy something for my sister for Christmas that was featured in one of the commercials we saw a lot, including the Santa Bear Express which was featured as some promotion with Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Maybe the best commercial is a McDonald's one, and McDonald's seemed to sponsor every Christmas special, where Birdie and Grimace capture a falling star for Ronald. It's just bizarre because it's literally just a short story with no McDonald's products actually shown or referenced in the commercial. It just seems like the type of thing most corporations would not greenlight today, though in the case of McDonald's, they're either not allowed to use those characters or have been properly shamed out of advertising garbage food to our kids with mascots.

On the subject of there being no Garfield videogames for a long time, my friend and I tried to remedy this by drawing out levels for a Garfield platformer and then sending them to Nintendo. I have since become aware that there were many other kids with the exact same idea.

I am so happy you guys are doing this show! My sister and I watch it every Christmas. It totally made my day to see it and I can't wait to listen to it!

Holy shit this brings me back and just listening to the clips I can imagine them perfectly. I love Garfield Christmas and like Henry/Bob this special is super nostalgic to me. It also hits me particularly hard cause I just recently lost a grandmother on my dad's side of the family so listening to the clip about the grandad actually got me to tear up. Ah... memories...

I forgot how important this special impacted my Christmas experience. Most of my affection for the tree decorating probably comes from this show! And the song that you guys played with Garfield and Jon has always stuck in my brain (well, just the part where Garfield says chores, for some reason). I also totally remember sticking around to see the Raisins Christmas special!!!! Thank you guys for filling in some of the memory gaps that still impact how I celebrate Holidays

I'm reasonably sure "wood-burning cat" is just Grandma affectionately taking the piss about how things have changed since her childhood, similar to Lou Pickles and his catchphrase " FIF-TEEN miles!" Everything's electric these days, so naturally back then it was all powered by wood, even the cat. It's a deliberate joke; she's just been revealed as the cool grandma who loves to bust yer chops, after all.

I've been looking forward to this episode since you announced it and even planned one of my weekly long-runs along with its release. Somewhere between your episode about the Halloween special a few years back, my discovery of the Quinton Reviews YouTube channel, and now, I think I've developed an actual love and appreciation for Garfield. I also agree with Henry that the 1983 Garfield IS the cutest Garfield. Not to brag, but a month or so ago I found an old T-shirt at Buffalo Exchange with that very Garfield—stamped with a 1983 copyright even—and it's now my most prized procession. The checkout clerk was even like "Wow, we had that? What a find!" and my husband was also super-jealous, but it was a men's 1983 small, so it's all mine. I haven't, however, ever owned any of the McDonald's mugs, though like Bob, several of my friends' families did. My middle-class family fell solidly into the "plastic commemorative cups only" tax bracket, but my parents did spring for those plush Christmas Muppets. I haven't been home for the holidays in several years (because ew, snow), but I know my mom still puts them out every year. Also, Indiana IS the worst state. Please stay away, Bob; you'll only regret it.

There’s a picture of me circa 1988/89 with a plush Christmas Fozzie.

After Garfield and Odie almost got killed by pirate ghosts in the Halloween Special, I appreciate a gentle family Christmas gathering.

As a kid a was obsessed with Garfield as were many of my friends! But I never knew if that love was exaggerated because of where we lived. Jim Davis was born in Marion, Indiana - my hometown - so the love for him and Garfield was heightened. Downtown there's a giant mural of Garfield on the side of buildings. There's statues of Garfield peppered throughout the county, including outside of the hospital. Later I went to the same college as him, Ball State University, where there's even more Garfield statues and love. [Henry, how DARE you say he and David Letterman went to Indiana University! I demand a retraction! ;-)] He continued to produce the strip for years nearby in a town in Albany, which excited many locals that never truly left. As an adult who now lives in Denver, I sometimes mention Garfield to people and even sometimes proudly proclaim I came from The Land of Garfield! Which is mostly met with lukewarm memories from them; "oh, yeah, I kinda remember Garfield..."

Great episode! All this Grandma talk & Garfield mug talk makes me want to share my Gramma's McDonald's Garfield mugs from 1987 but I'll wait until next week & post them on the Discord. They're still in her daily rotation.

Great show guys, this show rekindled some fond memories for me, and even solved a minor kid mystery that was buried inside my subconscious. I was obsessed with Garfield as a young kid and I think I experienced this special differently than most, as I think I missed the first showing in ‘87 but then saw it in ‘88 after I read the ‘87 Christmas Special book that I got from the library. I think I read it cover to cover like a dozen times and was super impressed by how close the special mimicked the book. I realize now that they made the special first and then the comic so that’s why it’s so similar. I might never have figured out that was the reason if not for your podcast so Kudos.

heads up. those garfield mugs were found to have cancer causing chemicals in them so maybe dont drink out of those.
