We've got a special poll for all of our listeners, just in time for the 30th anniversary of The Simpsons' second season! In case you missed the newest Talk To The Audience community podcast, we have big plans for 2021. After our great success in returning to season one at the beginning of 2020, we've been considering a similar return to the second season once we're finished with season 11.

After revisiting season one earlier this year, we realized that Talking Simpsons can do so much more with these classic episodes than we did the first time we covered them. Since we first covered season 2 more than five years ago, we've learned a ton about these golden years of the show we didn't know when we started this podcast. Right now we're in the midst of the 30th anniversary of the season with the first Treehouse, the first Phil Hartman appearance, and so many other unforgettable moments. (And don’t worry—just like with the first season, the original podcasts covering season two will still be available in our back catalog.)

With your approval, we'd like to finish up season 11 at the end of this year, then start 2021 with a return to season 2, beginning with Bart Gets An "F". After we go through all twenty-two episodes of the 1990-1991 season, the Talking Simpsons podcast will then resume our chronological exploration of season 12.

Just as we did with season one, we think it'll be a very exciting and entertaining chance to revisit those episodes in a much more in-depth format with cool new guests and brand-new perspectives. Our original chats on these eps were only 30-45 minutes long, and these iconic episodes deserve so much more.

But we want to hear from all of our listeners first, so we're letting you decide. We hope you're as excited as we are about doing this, but please let us know by voting for one of the choices below. Thanks as always for your support, and we hope everyone has a happy holiday season!

Hurray season 2 has some gems also is 30-40 minutes even a podcast

Jason Lew

You guys are great and can do no wrong.

ty howell de winkle

I voted yes on s2, but I’m also excited to see your take on s12. Alternate? Maybe make it a permanent model? S3/s13, s4/14, etc?

Angel Young

I was thinking about if you guys would redo season 2 very recently. Haha.

Dylan (batmanboy11) Freitag

Returning to season one was such a blast that I am 100% down for this and would enjoy it immensely

Thad Komorowski

Could there be an extra option: “Yes, but after Season 12”? I kind of think you guys need to wrap up the Scully years while you have this momentum of figuring out what exactly made this very polarizing era what it was. But yeah, a revisit would be just fine either way.

Andrew O.

I understood for season 1, but season 2 and possibly subsequent seasons I don't. We can always go back and listen to old ones. Maybe return for special episode anniversaries. I'd much rather a season or half-season of another show. How about when you do the upcoming Futurama arc you cover an anime season/show? (Trigun, Jojo, Kimetsu no Yaiba, etc.) Then you offer more unique content while delaying the inevitable worse seasons of The Simpsons?

Kiaayo

MORE content? I dunno, seems like a risky proposition.

crystalhearts

Oh, definitely. The podcast is pretty well entirely different than it was when you first did season 2 - it can only be made better with more polish and a more diverse guestlist. Plus, the season 1 revisit was really great!

Mike Mariano

Voting yes on the sole condition that you keep the Talking Simpsons Curse far away from Danny DeVito who will be 76 when you get to Oh Brother Where Art Thou.

SomeBloke

I'm broadly a fan of revisiting early seasons, so I did vote for it, but I'm sympathetic to the arguments for finishing the Scully era first. Although starting the alternation now means we're potentially in for a more interesting dialogue between seasons 3 and 13, the first season of each Al Jean era. In conclusion, just hook it to my veins.

Adam Gaudry

I was thinking about this recently and think it's a great idea. Unless I'm getting something wrong, at the moment it's not possible to access your coverage of all the episodes in one place, so revisiting the older episodes until everything is under one umbrella makes sense to me.

Cody C.

I really don’t care for this but it appears I am in the minority. Fine, I spose

Tim Schein

Made sense for s1 but not for s2. Please keep going forward, you did a great job the first time around.

Frank Grimes

How about King of the Hill instead :)

John Harrison

I just relistened to your old 'Bart Gets an 'F'' episode today, and yes the change in TS over the years has been dramatic in almost every front. While I think it could be good (as most of your efforts are) I would rather any revisiting of old seasons happen after you finish the Scully era. I think the above mentioned idea of revisiting 'event' episodes might be a good vein to mine, but if you make this a habit, it will look quite blatant that you are trying to delay having to cover the 'bad years' and the 'really bad years'

Jason Williams

Can you alternate weeks with season 12 and season 2 if you decide to do that? Season 2 episode this week followed by season 12 episode next week? Either that or continue on with season 12 as the weekly show and cover the season 2 look back as the “What A Cartoon” series of episodes. Season 1 was a short season so it only delayed season 11 by a couple months. Season 2 was a full season so that will delay season 12 into the latter half of 2021. I guess I just don’t want to see the podcast put on the brakes for the first half of 2021.

Ian

I've been dying for you to do this ever since the S1 revisit!

Taskbaarchitect

I voted 'yes', but I'd echo a few other commenters and suggest that maybe you intertwine the Season 2 episodes with where you are in the current chronology - perhaps two/three "modern" Simpsons episodes, one S2 rewatch as a palate cleanser, and one Talk to the Audience each month? Obviously, given how far ahead you guys are recording, you wouldn't be experiencing the episodes in that order with us, but it feels like a nice compromise for those who would love the benefits of a second-go at Season Two (longer deep-dives with a wider pool of guests to pick from) and those who already have the popcorn ready for Season 12's more dubious delights. (I also voted for Prell to go back to the old glass bottle.)

Shaxbert

I voted "no," but would be entirely down for interweaving S2 episodes with S12 ones as suggested by previous comments.

Fatamatician

I have never listened to Talking Simpsons proper, but wanted to get started, is it better to go to the original, or the "new" season one. Or both?

Joe Hodgson

I voted "No," but it looks like I'll have to get used to life with Season 2 again. Like some of the opinions expressed here, I was kind of eager to get to 12 to see how it compared with 11 as I feel the two juxtapose each other well, but breaking the two up by half a year is going to derail that momentum. I was also left feeling that the return to Season One wasn't the return I had hoped for. I voted to do so, but it became a bit of a slog. It has little to do with the quality of the podcast and more to do with those classic episodes just being so familiar, and so well-covered by pop culture outlets over the years that there just wasn't anything new to say about them. Season Two is undoubtedly a better season of the show, even ignoring the obvious "increase in mass" over Season One, but they're also far more familiar. The later seasons are obviously inferior, but at least they're not as familiar. Clearly though, the mob has spoken so I'll just have to suck it up.

Kevin Bunch

I went no. The season 1 revisits were fine, but as others said it was a short season and thus not a huge time sink (and even then, I lost a lot of interest like halfway through). Season 2 I find generally kind of bland, and with that kind of time commitment both from you as creators and from an audience it’s a very hard sell vs just continuing to move forward in the chronology. Much more likely I would just flat out skip the podcast for the six months or so you’d be trekking through season 2 again. The idea of interspersing episodes throughout the year is an all right compromise, but a solid six month block of the schmaltziest classic season is not terribly appealing to me. More broadly I think looking at these later seasons is far more interesting - folks are less familiar with them beyond the general reputation and I think these podcasts do a good job of shining light on what they continued to do well and what they didn’t. And that changes constantly throughout the show’s run! That’s really cool! Pushing it off for more “golden age” breakdowns, ehhh

Brian Silvers

I look forward to the re-revisit of Seasons 1-8 in five years.

Dave Dalrymple

A lot of people are advocating for "12 then 2 then 13", but I'd rather see a smooth transition between 12 and 13. That will make the differences between the Scully era and the Jean II era appear sharper.

mavrick

I'd like TS to at least get through half of the seasons before rehashing old ground.

BdoSpdo

I am mainly interested in who you guys gets as a guest for the weed episode Weekend At Burnsies in 13

Westley C. Côté

I’m a sicko who thinks that season 2 might be my favourite version of the Simpsons so, yes, I’d love me some season 2

GARY SCHOENE

I think season 2 once a month and rest being season 12 would be for the best. The patreon feed is missing some classic episodes but wouldn't want you two to stop progressing into modern simpsons

Paul

I'm honestly shocked by the results. People have spoken but it's highly disappointing.

Camille Walters

I think alternate weeks is the best bet or one season 2 episode a month?

Frank Grimes

I'd rather we move forward than backwards, but looks like it's inevitable that S2 will be revisited.

Eli Meaux

I've been waiting for years to get to the seasons the hosts clearly hate. I became a patron to ask that they go forward rather than back. How many places have talked about how great early Simpsons are compared to how many places have critically discussed season 13? Revisit so boring and all it does is support the navel gazers who have been upset about the shoes decline for two decades now.

iMadeAPromise

If you need help with Season 2, I can provide some animation ID. I can tell you right away that Eric Stefani laid out the whole crying sequence in "Bart Gets an F". Istvan Majoros did the scene of Martin in the pirate's uniform concluding his essay in that same cartoon. Tibor Belay and Sondra Roy did scenes in Bart the Daredevil for Homer jumping the gorge. (Tibor did Homer until he was airborne, Sondra did Homer in the air and falling down the cliff for the first time). Wes Archer did revisions and breakdown drawings along with timing the exposure sheets on that sequence.

Rudy De La Torre

I think a 2 revisit would be great. Also a suggestion, maybe invest in a part time producer to get more interviews with simpsons and Simpsons related crew and staff to be your special guests. Not that I don’t like your current run of guests, but I think there’s a plethora of Simpsons knowledge that we are missing out by having repeat guests all the time

Thad Komorowski

I like the suggestion of doing 2 or 3 Season 12 episodes and one Season 2 per month. It might give you perspective on what the show lost, too, watching them side by side like that. But your call...

I.C. Weiner

Not to throw shade at any individual but I think the show got much more fluid and better when a third permanent host left, and I hope you guys revisit all of those episodes.

Tim Schein

Is it because you're not confident about people staying with the podcast into the 'terrible teens'? Because we're with you all the way, let's do 12 right after 11!

sugarwithfreedonuts

I voted no because, as someone who started catching the live broadcasts around Season 13 (everything before that was syndication), I still have some fondness for that era of Simpsons and I've looking forward to hearing your thoughts. However, as I said when you guys floated the idea of revisiting Season 1, you should enjoy making this podcast just as much as I enjoy listening to it and if revisiting Season 2 will satiate that podcasting hunger then I say go for it (I'm going to listen no matter what anyway!). Season 2 or Season 12, I'm looking forward to more Simpsons deep dives!

Codeaholic

I voted for revisit. I like a second look with hindsight of experience.

Warren Evans (@bartofdarkness)

This is a tough call for me, because I would love a Season 2 revisit, but I’m also eager to hear you guys breakdown 12 and beyond, as someone who likes a lot of those seasons.

Cameron Law

The last revisit was so tedious, please not another.

Alex Forsyth

Honestly guys. This feels like the DVD seasons only releasing once a year again. Every year you redo is another year you are treading water and not gaining on the current episode of the show(which could take you 20 years anyway without full season redo's). I think a better way to go about it would be to do the early season Simpsons redo's once a month on What a Cartoon instead.

Burt Stanton

I thought the season 1 revisit was great. Bob and Henery have so much more knowledge about the show since the initial pods as well as more time to go even more in depth on every one of those episodes. I listened to the original season 2 pods and while they are good they are all a little bit too brief and I fully support returning to those

Jon

I loved the season 1 revisit! Let’s do it again.

Matt Hayden

I voted for Season 2, but who am I kidding? I’m gonna keep listening to TS regardless of season as long as you wanna keep doing it. Really enjoy the podcast.

Jonathan

You cant escape 9/11 forever!
