Editing to add a little more background story, now that I'm not a morning tiredperson:

On this week's VIM LIVE we talked about rituals, and I talked about one of my current manufactured rituals which is to try to go on a walk at lunch time and identify a new thing in the world (tree, plant, bird, bug, whatever) to write down in my stuff identification book.

Every week we have homework, and M gave me the homework to add more ritual to it by singing a magic incantation to my new find.

So when I found a spider made a home on my couch overnight, and right on the part of the couch I spend a lot of time sitting on every day, I took a moment to identify it and then come up with a story and ritual incantation for it, which I put on Lens.

The story was that funnel-web spiders suck all the negative energy out of the room and into their web to be devoured and destroyed and make you happy, if you sing them this song:

Funnel-web spider / Make my burdens lighter / Please devour / Bittersweet and sour

This simple act of attention-paying then gave me the inspiration to make a video about my new spider friend, when the following day I was trying to think "what is a video I could make right now and have out tomorrow?". Luckily my spider friend was still there!

The other ingredient is that I've thought before about doing a video about a different kind of spider web and its shape and how its formed, if I ever did some "math in our world"-type videos. So now that one's still on the list, and part of a series of spidermath videos, I guess!

You always have at least one line the makes me lol. "So you think you've got a regular donut, but it keeps growing cuz spiders" "Cuz spiders" Like DUH!! but that's not it--it doesn't really complete a proper sentence, "Cuz Words" And I'm sure I'm quirky and no one else thinks that's funny at all but I don't care "Cuz People" and so forth. I took the girls on tour with me and am just catching up. I love this video. It doesn't bother me that you use clips from elsewhere. I have a little knowledge about a lot of quirky things and this video shows exactly what I do for entertainment. But I'm not you and I don't have a unique way of presenting my thoughts in such a cool voice telling a great bedtime story. Cuz Vi

I loved the video but how the hell did that happen? You made me put my own sofa upside down looking for a vortex

Tim Sorbera

I love the video! The shorter format works well.

Sonja Black

I was skeptical about this new style, but yeah. That worked out pretty well.

I'm pretty lucky that spiders love me and want to hang out with me, I guess!

In broadcast media, the weekends at or around the Fourth of July are the worst for viewership. (The politicians know this. Guess which day W chose to announce his commutation of Scooter Libby’s sentence.) Anyway, if Planky allows such a thing, then a re-release of this vid and a second round t-shirt sales around mid-August (back-to-school time) might be good. Also, if you want to do weeklies, perhaps Alex French Guy Cooking can offer some pointers. Thanks for the Spider vid. I understand it has only two days of labor in it and I think it’s better than OK. I also think that with an extra day or two at most, you can make stuff that’ll work.

Your funnel-web spider inspired you to check out some funnel sculpture and instead they had spiders? I am hiding under my bed again. Thanks for the clarification vis a vis Australia. That version seems to be the deadliest spider on earth. So do you let people sit on that sofa any more or is it now a sanctuary? Is Doug Barker getting jealous? OK, best part was the hide and seek. How long do you have to wait for Spidey to show? I wonder if Spidey will get a little less skittish over time. The butterfly whispering did not work out, but...

We're planning a few back-to-school products! If I can get out lots of regular content between now and then, I think it'll do well.

Absolutely loved this video! Would love to see more like it!

It is a good shapey shape! Thanks for making it and putting it out there :D

Thank you for the closed captions! Years of headphones and loud music to cope with cubicle workplaces have erased much of my ability to follow spoken words. And your words are worth following.

Hey Vi, I like this video style! Obviously not as in-depth as your longer ones, but fun, interesting, and educational, and still exhibiting the incredibly pleasant cadence of your voice and your humour ("'cuz spiders") and weird thoughts. As a less expensive (time- and resource-wise) video to create, I think this approach is worth pursuing! :)

Rick

I will probably eventually really want those closed captions! Though hopefully by then there will be an app for that anyway ...
