AGARES, chapters 53-59, ~20K words

Thank you for your patience on this, AGARES was being troublesome for me, with some rewrites and editing. Thankfully, these are specific to this arc rather than structural. Ideally I'd have had this finished before the end of March, but that clearly didn't happen, to my chagrin.

My plan is to go through and make some edits to the whole first book, then post the epub for that. I'd intended to do that for this release, but didn't want to delay it longer. This is mostly going to depend on how much time and effort I have to devote to editing, which I find fatiguing sometimes (compared to writing itself, which is usually energizing), and I'm going to angle for not feeling like my brain chemicals are being drained.

AGARES will also be posted to RoyalRoad at a rate of two chapters a week, starting mumble mumble, with the Patreon being a variable number of chapters ahead, ideally with the Patreon backlog growing rather than shrinking. I'm at a writing retreat called Inkhaven right now, working as a writing advisor, and will ideally have time to do writing, but it mostly be on other, non-AGARES things, like Slag (WIP title), Untitled Dark Fantasy Romance, and maybe some other things. Any fiction I work on will be posted to Patreon at the very least, though some of it will end up other places as well.

I think, toward the end of December, I was firing on all cylinders and being tremendously productive, but a bout of what was maybe COVID knocked me badly off course, and has made it hard to recover. Some of that was being seriously sick, but some of it is just having intentful productivity disrupted. I guess I did get Wisteria done-ish, so I'll try not to be too hard on myself, but I think I'm back in gear now, even if a fair amount of April labor will be Inkhaven related.

Oh dear, how meta are we getting this time?

I can't believe it's taken me this long to realize that naming the dryad with light-based powers Chloris is a play on chlorophyll. Getting back up to speed quickly despite the delay is a good sign for the writing - means it's stuck with me for months now, even if recalling the exact sequence of prior events is fuzzy. That's one nice thing about videogame-conceit stories, anyone who's played some knows the basic bones and it's easy to sketch in the details later.

I'm very much enjoying the layers of storytelling here. Mulligan in the game world. His past and the records from it(videos). Sy on the design side. Sy's opaque past (interesting contrast with Mulligan's very clearly knowable past). Audrey and whatever is going on beyond Sy's eyes. The readers. Can't wait for the start of book 2

nice!

I feel like there's something missing between release 6 and release 7. Like, what happened that caused them to have to dive early? When did they evade authorities?

This doesn't have the AGORES tag, fyi

Enjoyed this segment a lot. Mulligan is starting to come into his own and grow on me. I liked the whole metanarrative interplay with the escape from the city and the fight scene after.
