Note: with the current AI assistance for mechanical errors, I'll probably be ditching the Edit/Comment links, as the current workflow seems to be catching most of the errors that my own editing passes do not, e.g. adjectival hyphenation, "rein/reign" confusion, placing commas outside of quotations, Youtube → YouTube and similar.AGARES will start posting on RoyalRoad today, I'll have a post about it. I'm expecting it to do less well, but I didn't expect Doomsday Pivot! to do well either, so what do I know? (It's doing extremely well on RoyalRoad, having hit #2 on Rising Stars.)

I think you really have something with this book, Author, if the quality and creativity of these first 30 chapters persists. This is what I wished I was reading as I was making my way through DCC. Do you prefer style comments/feedback here or in the doc?

What a pity that Paul doesn’t seem to believe that squirrels are cute! Also squirrels does raise the question of whether the class uses an animal type native to the sector, or if every sector is issued with squirrels. There’s none in Australia, to my (very mild) disappointment, because I do believe very strongly that squirrels are cute. (Obviously they’d be an invasive species here, like rabbits. If such things are still a consideration in this world.)

The current research in education is pro inclusion. Studies have been showing that placing special education students in the general classroom is a net positive. The special education students have better scores in reading and math when included. The other students gain skills working with a diverse population as well as empathy. Finally the supports for the special education students also support everyone else through UDL. What would improve the situation for everyone would be more training in special education for general classroom teachers and time for general classroom teachers to co-plan with special education teachers. The idea of tracking students is currently out of style, however, education does go through pendulums of change. Look at how we’re going back towards phonetics and tech ed is moving out of style. Also naming the company tech ed or ed tech is a weird choice. You’d never be able to find it in a web search.

Their startup name is Nephele, per chapter 1, he's using "edtech" as a generic term. For the rest, this is stuff that people working in the field said to me, and I'm sure they came in with their own biases. For splitting remedial and gifted, at least some of this is downstream of their own educational experiences, which would have included being a smart kid in a room full of those who are struggling, and in many cases, being the parent of a child in that situation. I don't have a strong stake here, I mostly care about getting the characterization right (Nat's particular intuitions and thoughts about education are unlikely to be validated or challenged by the narrative, as it's just not that kind of story).

Wait, couldn't Charlotte make bank by storing all those perishables that would spoil soon, and then chilling it with Environmental Control? Or even using the vacuum trick, which should also avoid (aerobic at least) spoilage? Radiation? Freeze drying? Time slowing surely helps, but depending exactly how it works, might not be as cost-effective as tried and true preservation methods. Gonna laugh if "linear Fighers, quadratic Wizards" applies to DS. Although it does seem weird for Nat to be surprised by Charlotte not being thrilled about being told, essentially, you're dead weight and should stay back at camp while us men go fight, or maybe we'll just leave you behind to do logistics, whatever. Isn't that pretty insulting to a talented friend one has the hots for, nevermind an equal partner in a startup? There's got to be dozens of clever ways to weaponize Analeptics too, Fenn and Mulligan exploited the hell out of similar powers before...heck, even Sanctuary in a world where modern pre-DS creature comforts are gonna be scarce pretty soon, that's yuge. Or ferrying people cross-Sector via subspace, etc. >most of [Schelling Point] in California That's a great IYKYK Easter egg, hah. I bet some of those guild members would thoughts on AI being "objectively worse", though in fairness the utility didn't really start taking off until maybe late 2025 at best, so the sentiment would have been accurate at the time Doom Pivot was being drafted. Likewise with Alpha School getting off the ground as a sort of proof of concept, or the tsunami of miseducational fraud, plagiarism, cheating, etc in regular schools that would have made Nephele's concept DOA. Though I hope Nat was familiar with A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer..."let's be the Anthropic of edtech" is, uh, a road with many skulls along it, a truly cursed industry. It's also a strange tension to simultaneously dunk on doomers while founding a capabilities company? Gradual Disempowerment is one of the least "scifi" loss conditions, handing increasing shares of children's education over to AI has so many potential failure modes (many of which we're already seeing in real time). Lastly I'm sad the party isn't sticking around for "Bruce Banner, dado, and Lelouch vi Britannia walk into a bar", that would be an amazing encounter.

"Most people who'd been in a plane when it had happened would have died, even if they had been spared someone using new, unfamiliar powers." Spared "by" ?

I hadn’t lived in the Bay Area for a few years by that point, and I was between Is that meant to be Had or is the rest of the sentence wrong?

Idk I like the setting, the setup with regard to how the plot is developing, good threads to chase. Some things I don't like are how very San Fransisco and LessWrong it feels, the unstated arrogance of the MC - tough to tell if it's intentional or a reflection of self-insert. Guy huffs his own farts and thinks hes better than everyone else, kinda offputting

someone random

I've been enjoying this book alot. The comedy horror of the randomized apocalypse is compelling, and the pacing of the analytical / character focused chapters actively building into the thriller-like chapters is gripping. If you end up writing more of this past book one, I'm definitely reading it.

Loving the series! I caught up on RR and immediately subscribed here. Big fan of the format of getting more chapters and quicker access. I always support when there is an ongoing series here!
