So, just some nods in the naming. Astro BOYD is of course a reference to Astro Boy, the popular manga/anime, created by Osamu Tezuka. Tezuka wich is the name of the police officier, another reference. The name 2BO, is a reference this time to the name of the little boy who serve as model for Astro in the manga, Tobio Tenma, who was the kid of Dr Tenma, the creator of Astro with the help of his friend Ochanomizu. So even the story line of two scientist who creat a robot child and one of them turn evil is a reference. Speaking of wich, Dr Akita is a nod this time to Akita Shoten, one of the biggest publisher of manga in japan. So yeah, there surely some anime/manga fan in the team that realised the show and specifically this episode.

I love this episode so much. I love how much we learned about gyros past and the humanity he shows at the end. Also, that look he has in the past is the same as his look in the original Ducktales, except he had red hair then, too.

easily on the shortlist of episodes that will give you diabetes.

This is a tribute to Astro Boy (Mighty Atom), the first episodic anime as well as the first to make it to American TV in the early 60's. Astro was a robot boy created as a replacement for the dead son (Tobio, get it?) of a scientist who later sold him into slavery in a robot-circus because he wasnt human enough. I grew up watching his adventures and like many other westerners, our love of anime started here. Astro Boy was created by Osamu Tezuka, considered one of the most influential manga artists & animators of all time. He also created Kimba, The White Lion which many believe influenced Disney (Disney stole?) for the Lion King. Astro did gain his freedom, gained a loving family & was a hero bridging the divide between humans & robots with his strength & heart. Someone on the creative side must have also been a fan!

Aww, the young Gyro in the photo is his design from the comics, that's cute! And also the "so idealistic..." part - so this Gyro is disillusioned and bitter, but didn't use to be a jerk... Makes sense, since that is NOT what he's like in the comics lol. He IS a very kind guy in those!

Thor

"Oh, is he based on a Shiba Inu?"...No! Dr Akita is in fact an Akita! :)

Tintros

Ok, 'Protective Mosco' is definitely one of my favorite Mosco variants :) 'He's just a widdle guy!' is SO SWEET!

Just A Random Human

As an autistic girl, I absolutely love how this episode was clearly neurodivergent-coded. The way BOYD acts is so well written to be autistic, and the line "He's a kid like me, just wired a bit different" I CAN'T 😭 That's the line so many people use when talking about autistic people.
