So the last poll was VERY divided. Which likely explains why I got backlash both ways; from skipping the episode to complaining about the episode. Judging by the comments a lot of you would still rather I just watched the episodes and enjoyed them. Which (realistically) is never going to be the case.

I came up with an analogy I was rather proud of: I like watermelon. On it's own it's refreshing and sweet, and really good! But I don't like watermelon in my lasagna.

Half the time I get frustrated with these episodes, isn't because they're not good. It's because the placement and duration of them, give me severe tonal whiplash. When we're right in the meat of our dish, really enjoying the meat of the plot, only to realise someones put a big chunk of watermelon in the middle of it. There's a time and place for watermelon, but it's not in the middle of lasagna.

I will not be able to please all of you because I will never be able to force myself to eat said meat covered watermelon and act like I'm enjoying it. So what can I do? And what am I willing to do?

1. If an episode pops up that feels like watermelon in my lasagna, I'll start to press the fast forward 10 seconds button at a time, to skim through it. The moment something important happens, aka; when the meat of the lasagna becomes the focus again, I will stop skipping and pay attention.

2. If the episode feels like it partially belongs, and is stomachable. Maybe it's just a little watermelon sauce in the lasagna and not a full piece of random watermelon. Then I'll watch the episode, as I currently do now. And I'll judge this based on how the episode is making me feel. If it's outright frustrating me and I know all I'll be doing is complaining, then I'll resort to step 1.

3. If I get to the end of the episode and I feel like I've cut a lot out, I'll make a decision about returning to the episode once I finish the show. Aka, I'll eat the watermelon after I'm FINISHED eating the lasagna. I'll take note of any episodes like this and revisit them if they fall into the bracket of point 1. Especially if you guys all believe the episode to hold some kind of important message.

OR

4. I'll add some extra fun behind the scenes stuff into the reaction, just for you guys. Maybe telling a bunch of jokes, or giving extra commentary on where my thought process is for the episode before and what I'd expected to see from the current episode I'm on. Between point 3 and 4, I'll see what mood I am in that day, and how much of the episode I cut. Hopefully this will please most of you. And if none of this makes you happy, and you cannot acknowledge that I refuse to sit and smile through something I am not enjoying, and don't feel like you're getting your money's worth. Then you're financially stable adults (I hope). And you can make the decision to leave my Patreon.

Completely fair. When the episodes first came out they were widely hated for being placed where they were, and I really don't understand the sudden obsession with them now.

Anzac-A1

Honestly, this sounds like the best approach overall. I do agree that the Homeworld episodes do suffer in quality. Escapism felt unnecessary to me, for example.

PsyColeDelic

Pleasing everyone is a Sisyphean task. Don’t sweat it, we are here to watch you experience some of our favorite shows, and I for one am happy to be on the ride no matter what. Can’t wait for the next one!

Anzac-A1

The good news is that the SU movie and the following season are much better in my opinion, so you have those to look forward to.

dona

Sounds like a good approach. I personally really dislike escapism because it felt so useless as an episode. It's a concept that makes sense, but it doesn't make sense to have a whole episode dedicated to it, especially since season 5 got watered down so much. Half the episode couldve easily been Steven connecting with Bismuth and Greg with the other half being Steven and Connie planning on how to save the others or something. It felt really out of place for me, and I completely understand why you skipped it. I honestly skip it occasionally when I rewatch. I don't mind the skipping of episodes in reactions when the episode is boring because I already know that and know what happens so it doesn't bother me. I found your Dewey wins and gemcation episode entertaining and also a little irritating at times, so it's a very hard balance to find where everyone is happy so this honestly seems like the best choice. I don't know why I wrote such a long comment lol you're probably not even gonna read it 😅 can't wait for next week's reaction though!! The finale 😈

tom david johansen

i dont care if you skip or not, just enjoying your reaction, and if you chose to skip scenes its fine by me, cause i was bored to at that part of the episode, kinda like a toilet/snack breake in a epic movie or something like that :3

Cali Jester

I can honestly tell you Mosco, I very rarely watch EVERY episode of a series I like. Especially a show like Steven where it loves to waste your time. Much love, Mosco.

MAX

people actually like escapism??? it’s totally understandable to be bored for that whole episode. idk why ppl are riding for it so hard. i personally dont mind the skipping or the negative criticisms so im fine with all the options

BigPoppaJohn89

you do you Mosco, if a episode feels like a filler then skip it

Auranymph

What's wrong with just watching the episode and voicing your genuine opinions on it? That's literally the whole point of this lol. I've never seen a reactor just fast forward through an episode that was boring them, I didn't even register that as a possibility lol. I don't see us running into this situation again with Steven Universe again, but this whole situation is just baffling to me. It's your channel, do whatever feels right, I guess I just took it for granted that the reactor would always watch the entire episode. The world is such an unpredictable place, full of surprises. I guess it's something to be grateful for, isn't it?

Dre

Do what you think is best. I’m sorry the situation got so divisive and difficult among your audience, but changing the way you operate to make others happy when they come for your reactions probably won’t be the best thing. I can’t imagine the emotional labor it takes to come into the camera and record so many shows. That’s not even considering the work it takes to edit for the YouTube uploads. So just do what you think is best for you.

Hulk Lover

I mean, personally I just like checking in on the watermelons. Now that I think about it, it did feel a little out of place, but I didn't mind. I didn't remember anything about the episode other than the song though, so I guess that's an indication of something. But yeah, I don't really care, at least not enough to complain about it. At the end of the day, it's just a cartoon. No need to get our kilts in a twist about how someone's watching it.

Savitar

She did that with the mayor election episode at the start of season 5 of SU and she got a load of shit in the comments about it.

Book Rook

I agree that the answer isn't really clear cut, because why people enjoy reactions and the show each have their own spectrum of preferences. Some people like Escapism for its themes and the showing of how Steven influences people. Others, equally justifiably, see it as a waste of time. Some viewers want you to see the positives they see, and some want you to be just as annoyed as they are. Waiting a week or sometimes months for an episode like this can toootally suck. It's still important that you enjoy watching though, so I think so long as you're giving it a chance each time - whether with skipping in smaller amounts or revisiting later - you've got a good balance. And a good analogy, for the record. TBH I always wished Escapism had the amount of time between home and the island swapped. Like, pay off the love of Steven from them by sending him off, then spend the rest of the episode with everyone else. At bare minimum, I think you're totally valid with not wanting to compromise your viewing experience by forcing yourself to watch and riff on the least enjoyable parts of something you like.

Jack Middleton

Thankfully this should not be an issue any more with Steven or Future. Plan 1 makes the most sense, since the reaction to skip ahead is just as valid as reacting with commentary.

largo778 .

The important thing is that you do what you feel comfortable doing. Yes we are paying for this but if you're not enjoying it then: 1) quality suffers 2) you run the risk of burnout.

OziasEvren

When I first watched the show, I skipped episodes too 😁 mostly the Renaldo ones 😅

Deanie

I find it frustrating that you're having to acquiesce to us as a collective. I feel like since you're here making us content that we /choose/ to pay for, we shouldn't have a say in how you conduct yourself. But I also appreciate the fact that you're willing to try and make the majority of people happy. So please do whatever is feasible, and if you do end up skipping something truly important then I'm sure you'll be told by many, many people. Keep your head up, you're doing the best you can <3

Wee Lass Reacts

^^^^ this I got SO much hate for doing just this, and so much backlash. On top of not enjoying the episode, my audience did not enjoy the reaction. That's why I began to skip through Escapism, because I didn't want to subject myself or my audience to that again.

Jergin

Step one seems the best option from here, I do the same things with the reactions when I just want the meaty bits, skip ahead until I get to a part that interests me.

BeastialMoon

Honestly the fact that people are so upset about the mayor Dewey ep is *insane* to me. Like, it's well known that Rebecca Sugar wanted to do more story stuff and didn't have time for this nonsense, but CN insisted on some eps in season 5 still being able to air without concern for order. I completely agree on all points.

Warren

love the analogy, and that seems like a great way to do it and deal with the less palatable eps, Im helping pay for the lasagna and want the person to enjoy said lasagna, if they find a piece of watermelon id much rather they remove it or save it for later than feel obligated to eat it just because its paid for

Auranymph

I should probably say that I'm not a content creator, so I've never been in that position before, putting yourself out there and receiving that much negative feedback from that many different people. It probably doesn't feel good. So I understand trying something different in hopes of avoiding that situation from happening again. I was a little disappointed in how this reaction went, but I can empathize with your reasoning. I'm still looking forward to the finale reaction as well as the movie and Future, and I hope this whole mess doesn't sour things for you. It's gonna be amazing. :)

TF

Honestly, you should do whatever you feel comfortable with. I'm personally here because I enjoy watching your takes on media I love, that's rather the point of a reactor. You learn to see things from a different point of view (even if it's a negative one) and get to experience the show again through fresh eyes. It's a real shame people are expecting you to not be yourself and get your viewpoint on it. Everyone sees things a little differently and I love that about reactions. Continue to be you, Mosco, thats what I'm here for and I'm sure other people are too.

TXOT

I happen to really dislike both watermelon and lasagna, BUT I appreciate the analogy nonetheless! I've seen some reactors awkwardly feign enjoyment of some content and I've seen others angrily bash something they also clearly don't want to sit through - neither approach is appealing to me as a viewer so good job trying to come up with a different path. Sounds like you've got a good plan i think and hopefully this hasn't stressed you out too much.

Samuel Wilson

I understand both sides but im paying to see your reaction to the series. If you feel like something isn't important skip it. Would i want you to watch every single second of every episode? Yes. But im not going to be upset you don't. I refused to vote in the poll btw, I cant decide that for you. Just happy to be along for the ride 😂

General Tacticus

Not being a Steven Universe watcher, I have no direct stake in this specific issue, but in general - I'm here to share in your enjoyment of things that I also enjoy. If you're not having fun, I'm not going to have fun either, and I'd probably skip any reaction for which that was the case. So "skip over the bits you're not enjoying" seems the most logical thing to me. (I hope this won't become a live question for RWBY, but you never know, everyone's tastes are different.)

Caitlin

Perfect! This seems just like what most people wanted! We hate the episodes with you, but want you to see the important messages or foreshadowing. even if you have to come back to episodes because you are too annoyed at the moment I fully respect that! I had to do the same (specifically with the damn watermelon/ dewy/ onion/ Ronaldo episodes) but they do have a little bit of either foreshadowing or important messaging in it. I don’t think any of Rebecca’s episodes are fully skippable as they all have a meaning and/or a place. So I like this choice:) thank you for working with us! Most creators would do what they want and ignore us, in which case I’d have left, but you work with what we want and I love that! Thank you so much:)

sidney

luckily the watermelon episode is kinda the only episode left in the series and future that is like this so

Spadez

I personally think how you handled the episode was perfect. I just feel people lost their minds and acting out towards others making it a bigger deal than it really is. The poll was divided but based on reactions, people think "Early and Uncut" means full episodes of the show, not uncut footage of the reaction. My ONLY gripe is that SU are only 15 minute episodes so getting 2 minutes or 4 minutes worth of THAT episode makes it feel too short. But this issue is limited to the 4 horribly placed fillers in the show. You have always been open and honest about your reaction style, what to expect from patreon, and get back to your community whenever an issue arises. It just bothers me that people try to spoil shows for you in comments then directly turn around tell you how should run your reaction channel when they arrived here by you just being you in the first place.

Silvered Fox

I like the option to find a middle ground that hopefully YOU can enjoy At the end of the day you are sharing YOUR experience with us the viewers. This is an experience you are having, and it should be a good one. Or at least a bearable one (I think) Skipping in increments to make it go faster lets you have the chance to see the nice bits between the frustrating ones, or even walking away for a bit before continuing to record because when you know the episode is going to frustrate you when you're right in the feels could also help (a little, there's honestly no helping some of those episodes) Your genuine reaction *is* the frustration sometimes and that's valid too. I know I personally am just happy to know that you've experienced even the slow bits in case they do end up meaningful later, or so you don't skip actually good parts because they're sandwiched in between the D: WHY! sections. I also have to say I wouldn't mind some extra shower thoughts in exchange for the shorter reaction. Ramble about your theories, your thoughts (even just some annoyances and what you'd hoped might have happened instead) That's still interesting to see! But I'm here because you are a very honest and visceral reactor. And to complain about you having a reaction to ... what you're reacting to? Would be pretty silly I think. And as a few other people have said if you're miserable that defeats the point of enjoying watching someone enjoy a show. And you can burn out and then it's more likely there will be NO shows for a bit for anyone. And you won't feel good which is a crappy thing to do to anybody.

Benjamin Sones

I can understand why people might be bummed if you skip an episode, but at the same time, forcing you to watch something that you genuinely are not enjoying isn't much fun for anyone. Just skip stuff if you need to, and comment briefly on why you did in the next reaction.

Lonely Pancake

I would never want you to sit through something your not enjoying just like I don't do that I enjoy your videos no matter what and I appreciate that you don't fake your reactions and you give us your real thoughts and opinions

WyvernKing99

That sounds like a decent compromise. Would I prefer you watch and fully digest every episode to hear your opinion, even if it's negative? Yes, but you shouldn't be forced to sit through something you're really not enjoying. Fortunately, there aren't really any "Dewey Wins" or "Escapism" type of episodes left in SU, or any series you might be interested in that I can think of. Time will tell, though.

Cecilia Aurora Garbellini

Honestly, I don't understand why so many people are hating on you for your Escapism reaction. When it came out, everybody was SO pissed that they wasted 10 minutes on Watermelon Steven. People were going crazy on this decision. Everybody was so excited for this episode because the song was already popular so, to see an episode titled the same, it got everyone hoped and with high hopes. We were very disappointed when the episode, THE episode BEFORE the finale, was wasted like that.

Haldon Lindstrom

I'm glad you're setting boundaries. I'm here because I like your content, not because I think you should react a certain way. Looking forward to many more videos with you.

SauceyRed

I get the dislike of the placement of some episodes, iirc it was because of the execs thinking stuff was too heavy for the kids, so something light needed to be put between. Personally, I was also annoyed by those episodes, but not nearly as much as you, I either just naturally tolerated them or I was desensitized by the Steven Bombs. Would’ve watched them no matter how much I didn’t like them, though, just in case there was something important, it’s a curse and a blessing. Watching reactions to a show though, it’s always so tempting to just skip the filler and the parts I don’t care about, but I just can’t bring myself to do it because I want to see the reactor’s *whole* experience, every thought and opinion. I voted for you to not skip because it’s what I would *prefer*, but I don’t really care considering the episodes we’re talking about (and as others have mentioned, I don’t think there are any more random filler episodes). Escapism, specifically, I personally enjoy. I don’t remember if I did when I was watching as it aired, but on rewatch it’s just kind of a vibe. (Man I gotta watch these Steven reactions, I’m always distracted by other stuff so I’m only like 3 episodes in and I joined the Patreon like 2 months ago lmao)

KimSea009

this seems like a very well thought out process and I'm curious to see how it works!

Melody

I will say that I'm only against completely episode skips in shows like Steven Universe because little details or hints can be hidden in any episode, no matter how meh that episode actually was. If the show was more episodic, or simply lacked as strong of a continuity, or didn't do big mysteries or anything like that I wouldn't care if they were skipped. That said, your compromise is extremely fair! I think part of the reason people may have been upset is that the arc with the Diamonds was so rushed (curse you Cartoon Network!) that skips some of the few episodes it did get feels like it's being rushed more. But, let's be honest, these reactions are only fun when you're enjoying what you're watching and engaged. If you're not, the reaction suffers for it. Steven Universe can be pretty hit or miss, anyways. Not with the home world episodes but with the townie episodes. If someone said they didn't skip a single episode and they aren't a reactor, I'd assume they're lying. You are completely good, Moscow! Just enjoy yourself.

Bailey Hale

I heavily enjoy the idea of saving episodes that dont quiet fit the pallet for another time. It lessens the burden of dislike and prevents hostility towards specific experiences. I’d much rather you enjoy the show and every episode. At the end of the day, you are the content creator. And you have a right to your decisions and feelings. Anyone who gives you backlash without understanding your reasoning and or not carring is undeserving of your efforts to entertain and simply need take a step off of your space. You are an amazing reactor. And you wont be able to satisfy everyone. I think you should just be yourself and do what you think is right for your community in your own way and with the help of your team. You got this Bossco.

Spadez

Also just realized you referenced Watermelon Steven AND Pink Lasagna (Stop it Steven, you're going to break her).

iNSaNiTY714

I think this is a very fair decision. I definitely don't think you should have to grin and bear it if you're not enjoying the episode cause I completely agree that a lot of episodes are poorly placed. My main issue with the Dewey episode was that the anger and frustration bled into the next episode which was actually a very good one. Reading the comments on the escapism episode made me worried that you were just gonna skip the whole episode, but skimming through it like you did was totally valid. With how little time they had left to do the episode, that episode could've been the same up until he is zooming back to earth in his mindscape thing, and then could've gone: He wakes up in a watermelon Steven, gets frustrated, builds a raft, sails until Lion finds him, tells Bismuth they need help, and end. Then cut back to their predicament and maybe other stuff happens. The world building with the watermelon Stevens was cute but entirely unnecessary where it was considering this was the episode before the finale. I hope this ends up making things a lot more enjoyable for you to watch when you get to other shows that do this as well.

Vex Valor

I think that is a good compromise. I don't dislike the watermelon episode, but wouldn't call it necessary. It's a calm before the storm episode meant to slow us down a bit before the finale. I think they could have went with something a bit more emotional than atmospheric. It's not everyone's taste and I think as long as you are providing commentary to your thoughts and skimming the episode for scenes that interest you, then it's good.

marauderluverz (Luci)

I appreciate the time and thought you put into this. Its hard to do something like this and have people complaining no matter what you choose to do, and I agree if people cant be happy no matter what then maybe your patreon isnt for them. And that's okay. Im happy to keep watching in whatever way you do your reactions and cant wait to see more. Thanks again!

Tintros

Ok first? Lasagna and Watermelon. BLLEEGHGHhhhh.. Didn't need that today. :) Second, Do what you want! There's none of these choices that would make me not want to watch your videos, and subbing to your Patreon is a great deal in terms of dollars to enjoyment :) Keep up the good work!

KyleM

I'm sorry people made you feel the need to post something like this. I signed up to see your reactions, whatever that reaction may be.

ElusiveViper

personally I don't mind people complaining if they don't like something as long as its actually explained criticism even if I don't agree with it as long as its not just "I don't like this" with no explanation of why it feels more honest to me nothing is weirder to me than just positive impressions.

Chris P3

Some have suggested speeding things up instead of skipping completely. Playing scenes at 1.25 or 1.5 speed might be a good alternative so you don’t miss anything and the audio doesn’t glitch out too much.

man-of-bvz1n3ss

Given that I'm here for the RWBY reactions, I was very out of the loop with these posts, but ultimately, take care of yourself. Reacting is an odd job and works best when it's genuine, and you don't have to watch every episode of a show to get a full picture of it. Do what you gotta, as there's enough content already.

Reaper Scythe

Maybe if you're watching something someone you know has seen before you could have them warn you about episodes like the Watermelon Steven ones and ask them to give you the highlights or something. The way people watch shows is different. Some people only hang off the plot while other people might read into the seemingly pointless side stories and try to really figure out what it means and why it was put there. There is a point to those episodes but if you're only there for the main plot of course you're not going to enjoy those ones. Especially if they're dumped in the middle of the action. One thing I would suggest is if you're going to skip most of an episode then react to an additional one in the same video. That way it doesn't end on disappointment on both your end and ours.

Val Mattingly

It's a shame Escapism is such a skippable badly placed episode, because Escapism the SONG is one of my favorites in the whole show, even with how short it is.

Chris P3

She could’ve said pizza and pineapple, and the metaphor would’ve worked just as well.

Kelvin James Landon

Your analogy of watermelon in lasagna raises many questions. Mainly, who in their right mind would ever put watermelon in lasagna?

Someday Sera

I saw a reddit post today about somebody's roomate mixing miracle whip into plain white rice for lunch. Every nightmare food crime is a delight to somebody, no matter how alarming.

Someday Sera

Do whatever works for you, skipping episodes isn't ideal, but the reactions aren't fun if you aren't having fun, so sometimes it's for the best.

Someday Sera

I do really love the song, even if the episode itself is frustrating.

Ant

Seems fair to me! I didn’t mind how you skipped through the SU episode bc at least you watched the meat lasagna parts and only really skipped the watermelon lasagna parts :)

Becca ^-^

Mosco this was a very responsible decision, still trying your best to give people what they want to see as well as sticking to your feeling. Anyone who really wants to see you will understand. I can’t wait to see any of what we get to see. I think the rest of Steven as well as the movie and future don’t have stuff like this happen if I remember correctly though. So keep doing what you feel is good for you ^-^

jessie H

That is completely fair and warranted! You’ve put up with the mayor Dewey and Ronaldo episodes. You skip whatever you feel you need to skip!

Looking at the stars through leaves

If you could do step 4 instead of step 3 that would be really cool. I don't personally see any reason to return to an episode after you finish the show. Unless you really liked that episode. However, if you re-watch the show you should give episodes you skipped on first watch another chance.

StarCutz

You got it 💜

Ríon

Well. I won't lie and say I agree 100% with how you are deciding to go about it. The whole thing just seems very immature, from both sides. But your time and health is most important. I respect you and what you have to do to feel able to continue making content. Enough said. X

Marcy Wu

You didn't even skip anything important in Escapism. People need to realize you can't force someone to change their opinion.

WyvernKing99

Yeah, true. Just don't let Elijah catch you saying that.

TinIsHere

It's not immature to not like something and express not liking something. Or to not want to watch something because you know you won't like it. Steven universe can unfortunately drag on in certain episodes and a lot of people don't like that. Mosco shouldn't have to fake being excited to watch something that is frustrating to watch, like the watermelon Steven scene in Escapism.

Scorrel

Makes sense, I'm just here bro

Tarot-Sovereign

You are more than reasonable. And you did the right thing. Escapism is an absolute waste of an episode; set in the middle of the "show's been cancelled and we have to rush to the end" phase. Was it, Sugar? Steven and Connie talking and the actual call for help, take like 5 minutes. That's 10 minutes wasted, at a time when we needed all we could get. We didn't know about the movie or the Future season. Imagine if a roller coaster slammed to a halt, so the riders could listen to a funny park employee anecdote, halfway through. Filler and cool down episodes are fine and even necessary; but not at the literal climax.

Michael Ward

Like any other reactor, you don't have to react to every single episode. I've seen where someone was asked by subs to react only to a specific episode of a show. You could take suggestions through your comments to react to episodes that are storyline significant and other recommend episodes. Remember, we're on this rollercoaster ride with you and we may feel the same way about episode continuity. Although, you may have to suffer through some episodes that ARE germane to a shows storyline. In other words, don't feel obligated to having to react to every episode. Just give a heads up at the end or the beginning of an episode if you will be skipping an episode and why just so we know what to expect and all should be fine.
