In addition to new area, I think the new grimm types is due to not being in school and them being stronger. Before the majority of grimm they fought were on approved school assignments. A Geist was probably saved for 3rd or 4th year students at least.

Nicholas Cummins

FYI: Haven is the name of the Huntsmen Academy, while Mistral is the city in which it is located. It's like Beacon Academy in Vale.

100% RWBY is very much a fantastic reactors show. I love that RWBY is no filler, every chapter matters. Also, I very much had the same reaction to V3C11 regarding Blake, Adam, and Yang when it first came out. Too many times I've watched an anime or show getting my hopes up too much, only to be let down. So I keep taking things with a grain of salt and thinking of what other explanations exist besides what I want to happen. What I love about the animation change is how much expressions improved. Volumes 1-3 did a good job with what they had, but this new engine nails it. Been awhile since I watched the V4 short in it's entirety, but wow that ending shot with Blake was beautiful and cleverly framed. Our first introduction to Salem (and her group), and I was immediately interested. She gives off that very calculated, patient, controlling vibe, but also is very... realistic? I'm used to villians being grandstanding, very over the top evil to the point of being comical. Salem feels different, very subtle. All the new outfits are fantastic, but I really adore the new ones for Ren and Nora. Ren's pink highlights are amazing and I really wanted to cosplay this one some day. And Nora's jacket is awesome.

EmberPanther

To answer your question about timeframe between Volumes, the RWBY crew (CRWBY) confirmed that there were 6-12 months from the time that Ruby left with team JNR. Also, for the Volume 4 intro, it would specifically spoil things until Chapter 5, not Volume 5, so please feel free to watch it at that point. ❤️ You can also see that each of the members of team RNJR have elements of Pyrrha in their new designs, with both Nora and Ren adding hits of red to their outfit, Ruby’s new corset being very reminiscent of Pyrrha’s outfit, and Jaune wearing a red sash around his waist like she did. Also, I once heard it pointed out that Jaune’s weapon is a family heirloom, so him adding some of Pyrrha’s metal not only keeps her close, but in a way symbolizes that he at least wanted to “add her to his family”.

CrowOfAFeather

Oh wow, this is early! Was that intentional...? Either way, happy to see it! And you guessed right, it's been months since now and when Ruby and co. departed for Mistral where Haven Academy is. For v1-3 they used the Poser engine, this is when they switched over to the Maya engine, and it will only improve from here! The crippling weakness; you remember what Qrow talked about Silver Eyes and the Grimm? And remember just HOW Cinder first stole Amber's Maiden powers. Men can't inherit Maidens' powers, Glynda talked about it in depth last volume :) Tyrion was at first asked to hunt for the Spring Maiden before being tasked instead with finding Ruby. I don't know if you have to wait for V5 to watch V4's opening...

Wil DeYoung

An observation that I saw before that really made me think and recontextualize V4 is that V1-3 are a prologue and V4 is the start of a new story. Back when this originally aired there was a lot of uncertainty and complaints in the FNDM over this volume. Much of it stemmed from the slower pace and the face that, since Monty died, the showrunners had to find their feet again. However after hearing that V4 is the start of a new story, the real story, it makes the pacing feel much more natural because we are getting an introduction to the rest of the world, not just Beacon. We are out of the small pond and into the lake now.

Curtis Murphy

Wait. Why can't she watch the openings? I don't know what spoiler she's talking about? I just watched the opening to make sure and I'm still lost?

Eric Smith

Salem in this case is likely connected to the town in Massachusetts, which became heavily associated with witches after some witch trials in the 1690s

Curtis Murphy

Also, people act like those showrunners weren't there from the beginning. They act like Monty was in charge of everything and they took over only after he passed away

Curtis Murphy

Wait, what does the Intro spoil? I don't remember anything

EmberPanther

It spoils some characters shown in Chapter 5.

Joy (a.k.a. Gentle Lionheart)

Mosco: Did Ruby do that? 😨 Me: Hell yeah she did! Honestly she should've done more! 😠 Mosco (seconds later): Well, she should've done more!! 😡 Love that we had the exact same reaction 🤣

Lavender Onyxheart

It was established in Vol 3 that only young women can inherit the power of the maidens, not men and not older women, and the first candidate is the person in their final thoughts when they die, unless it's a man or older woman, then it's random; so if Tyrian killed the Spring Maiden, then unless she is thinking of a young woman she knows, the powers would just jump to someone random

RetroBeastto

Something cute to know about Jaune’s new outfit is the red sash around his waist which resembles Pyrrha wore. Cute lil detail to take note of. To this day I still miss her as a character.

cobaltbeau

something to make you cry re: Pyrrha's name "Pyrrha" is the name the greek hero Achilles took when he disguised himself as a woman (in fact, all of JNPR's primary character inspirations were known to crossdress at one point in their stories), but it also forms the root of the word "Pyrrhic": Pyrrhic - adjective (of a victory) won at too great a cost to have been worthwhile for the victor.

Luke Teasdale

Well she is the wicked witch of the west as in the wizard of Oz, so there is a connection there she's the witch and she is named after a town famous for having witch trials. (Mosco doesn't read the comments so I can spoil a wee bit)

Curtis Murphy

Oh. Okay then. I guess I have a higher tolerance for spoilers because I didn't even consider those spoilers. Fair enough

man-of-bvz1n3ss

We're getting double reactions up through October.

CrowOfAFeather

I posted before I watched the very end, but thanks!

MtVesuvius

Some might called the US part of the West, too

Tone

In Volume 5 Team RWBY goes to the broken moon and pieces it back together!

Simon Davis

??? There isn't a single character in the intro who hasn't appeared on-screen by episode 5? And certainly no spoilers for *volume* 5. But also, seriously, this whole internet thing about "absolutely anything we haven't directly seen yet is a spoiler" is just daft. It's the intro to the volume! It's what the creators intended us to see! Have people never heard of "teasing new characters to make you excited to meet them", or, I don't know, watched a trailer?

man-of-bvz1n3ss

Mistral is the capital city, Haven is the Huntsman Academy in the city. Like Beacon and Vale.

Dre

Checked the wiki and I’m kinda shocked. Been a RWBY fan for years and this whole time I thought Beacon and Haven were the capital cities of Vale and Mistral respectively. No the capitals are called “city of Vale” “city of Mistral”. Same is true for the other two kingdoms. Honestly I prefer not knowing this info this is a bizarre naming convention. 😓

Geass

40:25 That's called a Geist, and that's the second one you've seen. The first was in the White Trailer.

Geass

Honestly, I would have liked to see her reaction to the OP and guess the meaning. It doesn't really spoil anything. The most I can think of was the guy on the boat.

Simon Davis

Mosco watching trailers: "Ooh! Who're you? You look cool! Can't wait to meet you!"

Liam Gradwell

Mosco made it to Volume 4! She’s now seen the show the way it’s supposed to look like. Be prepared for more better animation from here on. 🌹👏

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

This is still my favorite volume out of the 9 so far. The first one was in 2013 not 2003. They put each volume out yearly until the last one. Roosterteeth took a lot of shit for abusing the animators. Rightfully so.

Dre

“I haven’t been this into a show since She-Ra” Elijah said something similar a few times during her own RWBY reactions! I’m happy both of you have gotten so sucked into it!

Ryan

It has been [ 0 ] episodes since Mosco got punched in the feels. Mosco: "Get away, RWBY, you bring only trauma!" RWBY v4: "I also bring flashback and lore! Mosco: "Aww..." RWBY v4: "It's trauma." Mosco: "God damnit!" Yeah... save RWBY for last on recording days going forward. And keep E-lijah charged. --- Oh, volume five is the best! We meet a character based on Tigger in volume five. He's *very* bouncy!

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

*Every single RWBY volume intro* shows us new characters, or new looks for existing characters, that don't appear until later in the volume. Given how strict Miles & Kerry (and, back in the early days, Monty) have always been about spoilers, it's reasonable to assume anything and anyone they put in an intro doesn't count in their eyes. However, if this is to be the new policy going forward, I suppose it's good that we know now. (Long as it's consistent.)

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

We do get it. We all loved her too. She was my favorite along with Qrow. It's probably a good thing you didn't notice that Juane is now wearing her sash around his waist.

Dre

Elijah and Mosco both had the intense urge to protect our farm boy upon seeing him haha

Jittercritter

It’s really interesting how effective and insightful his character introduction is despite there being no dialogue, no written words, no symbols or anything… just colors, lighting, scenery, body language, and a sigh or two. That’s all that was needed.

Eric Smith

The way they animate him bouncing on stairs gives me anxiety

May

The intro isn’t a spoiler. If that’s a spoiler then vol 3, vol 5, vol 6, and vol 7 intros would also be spoilers. It’s no different than watching the Hazbin Hotel trailer which she has no problem reacting to. Trailers and Intros are meant to be a sneak peek at what’s to come. If that’s a spoiler then isn’t every intro and trailer a huge spoiler?

May

It doesn’t spoil anything. If a couple new faces are a spoiler then she shouldn’t watch ANY of the intros. In fact that goes for most other shows too. Man people really be calling everything a spoiler huh?

May

If you don’t consider the intro to volume 3 as a spoiler for having Qrow, Winter, and technically Summer Rose in it then vol 4 most definitely isn’t even close to one. But you can wait til after episode 5 if you want. Though I’m not really sure how the volume 4 intro any more of a spoiler then like majority of RWBY intros.

Andrew Hart

Exactly! So many people act like Miles and Kerry weren’t involved or didn’t have a hand in creating the parts of early RWBY that they love, they just criticise them for the parts they don’t like. Save for the fight scenes, they’ve literally written and directed (Kerry as co director) since volume 1.

Andrew Hart

I’m looking forward to your next reaction 👍

Mare

The original trailers came out in 2013 not 2003. Also "Ranger" is technically a color (which Ren pointed out) that comes from 'Ranger Green" so they still have to keep up with the color naming.

Cinder's Apologist

yeah big agree. there really is nothing spoiler-y about the v4 intro; if anything, watching the new intros is an integral part of the RWBY viewing experience

Cinder's Apologist

Haven is the academy. Mistral is the city where Haven is, but also Mistral is the kingdom. Anima is the continent where Mistral is found. that freaky Grimm is a Geist, and you actually have seen one before. you didn't see it in that specific form, but the giant suit of armor that Weiss fought in the White Trailer? that was the Arma Gigas, meaning a Geist possessed that suit of armor, so Weiss was fighting a Grimm in order to convince her father to go to Beacon for school. yes, Salem is very terrifying :3 looking forward to the reactions for this volume!

Cinder's Apologist

yeah, it's so heartwarming to see such enthusiasm for RWBY

BGTitan

Character Short: For the short, our first look at the switch from them animating in Poser to Maya. Got to hand it to the crew, they had to build all the models from scratch, and I can’t imagine how much work went into that. But in the long run the switch was severely needed. Couldn’t imagine half the stuff they do now ever working out while using Poser. So, I will preface this with the fact that V4 is my least favorite volume of RWBY. There’s just a lot of specific things that don’t particularly work for me. However, there are a lot of good things which I’ll talk about as we go, I’m sure. For now, Episode 1: Anima is the continent. Mistral is the kingdom. Haven is the academy. We’ve got a whole new group of characters, which for brevity I’ll call Team WTCH (Witch). Watts, Tyrian, Cinder, and Hazel under one big bad , Salem. They’re fun. Particularly love the detail that Watts doesn’t sit until Salem does. Speaking of our big bad, I love that there’s an instrumental of Divide as she makes her entrance. Best song from V3. Loving the new designs for RNJR (Ranger). Particularly Ren’s. But I also think Nora’s is really cute. Love a good bomber jacket. The Gheist Grimm is something we have seen before. It was possessing a suit of armor in Weiss's trailer (the White Trailer) which was called an Armor Gigas. And another musical cue from V3 with Mirror Mirror part 2 playing when we see Weiss. As I mentioned, they switched from Poser to Maya between volumes and while that was indeed the right call, due to them having to build everything from scratch, there are some growing pains. Nothing big but just stuff I notice when I watch. But, even that improves with time so... eh. Like I said, growing pains.

EmberPanther

This difference in this specific case is that 1: The list and instructions she has for the order are from either a mod or someone else she trusts and 2: the characters that would be spoiled have a reveal that is intended to be more impactful than the others mentioned. I can’t say anything else to avoid spoilers, but I will say I am glad that Mosco was given that heads up.

man-of-bvz1n3ss

Eh, not that bizarre. It's mostly a reference to the fact that the kingdoms themselves are largely composed of the capital city, and only a handful of surrounding villages. Otherwise it'd be weird to talk about how Beacon has fallen but Vale is still standing.

Jason S

32:50 Most people measure the passage of time by the seasons. Mosco measures it by hair length.

Arashi

"I just have questions!" Really? You? I would never have guessed! :p Though fair, Ruby's Semblance was never really covered beyond 'go fast'. Welcome to the first arc costume change. Each set of three volumes has tended to have the cast get new outfits. "Someone's going to just mention Pyrrha and I'm going to start crying." Oh... *winces* Get some tissues on hand for the first few chapters... I hope you enjoyed your visit to the so-called 'Land of the Dark', home of Salem and her... minions, not posse. She is quite the just-slightly-off-and-menacing-without-doing-anything. The background theme helps a lot. Say hi to the Geist. The possession Grimm. You've 'technically' seen one before in the White Trailer as the possessing entity of the knight (called an Arma Gigas with the Geist in it) You're right on both counts. They can expand the Grimm styles because they have more budget/new rendering software. Lore wise, they're on a new continent so there are different 'local' Grimm. Pyrrha's absence is not going away anytime soon. Particularly for the rest of her team. Notice that there is nearly always a slight gap when they're standing together. Room for one more. ;_; For the intro, I would say it's fine after chapter 5 to watch. Volume 5 spoilers? Okay. "We just got here! Why is it all on fire!?" "Have you ever considered the benefits of being a pirate?" "On the road again..." "The hell you mean 'again'?"

Luminaxtea

I don't know who said there was spoilers in the intro, but not only are they incorrect, they might have just spoiled you instead. There's no spoilers in the intro. RWBY is very good about not throwing in spoilers for stuff that hasn't happened or won't happen yet. The soundtrack is the same way. The writers are super tight-lipped about the story and if there was something you weren't meant to see yet it wouldn't have made it into the intro.

Nihilero

Technically we got "go fast" aaand "rose petals" ;P

Nihilero

Also her scythe is named "Crescent Rose" and in at least one shot kinda completed the image of the moon behind Ruby.

Arashi

Pretty sure the 'spoilers' comment was for character introductions. All notable characters in the volume are introduced by chapter 5. Not really spoilers in the 'character X dies!' or 'the moon blows up!' kind of way just a 'who's that and why are they hugging?'

Dre

Shoutout to the score as well! Not to accidentally spoil Mosco in case she reads this comment, but our farm boy has a leitmotif that reappears sometimes during his scenes! The same is true for other characters as well of course. For example in chapter 1 of volume 4 you can hear Salem’s main character song Divide (which played during the volume 3 credits) play as an instrumental as she ominously strides in.

RiekerVerse

gonna be honest, I can't think of a single character in anything I've watched that fits the description of "haunts the narrative" quite like Pyrrha Nikos... It never stops hurting, no matter how hard we try to keep moving forward.

RiekerVerse

Yeah for real, for the most part the team did a really good job at keeping spoilers out of the intro, the only real exception I can think of is volume 7, and even then its just the new outfits they literally get in the second episode, so reaaaally stretching to call that a real spoiler

Verdigree

Red is a very interesting colour, on Pyrrha it’s accompanied by gold, it’s the colour of flame 🔥, while on Ruby it’s darker, the colour of roses, 🥀 but also the colour of blood🩸, the colour of love ❤️, and the colour of life A lot of story is inside the music, in Red Like Roses Part II, Ruby’s music that played when she beheaded the bird, the lyrics were all about grief, and the chorus always seemed to be evoking imagery of blood to me “Red like roses Fills my head with dreams and finds me Always closer To the emptiness and sadness That has come to take the place of you”

Verdigree

RWBY came out in 2013, not 2003, you got most of the numbers right!

Verdigree

The thumbnails on Crunchroll were an absolute menace, they had to change them multiple times because of how spoilery they were, but my opinion is the opening credits are meant to be seen

Luminaxtea

That's not spoilers though. Generally knowing about a character's existence is only spoilery if said character is already established to be dead, missing, or their existence (or lack thereof) has plot relevance that the audience shouldn't know about yet. If we argue that new characters in intro = spoilers then by that logic, she shouldn't have watched the color trailers at the very beginning because they spoil Adam and Junior before the show introduces them proper.

DKscribe88

I think I remember a video of yours I watched where you said that if anyone recommends RWBY to you one more time you'd never watch it. May have mentioned something about banning people from the channel. That last part I'm not positive you said, but the first part you definitely said. Could be why we stopped trying to get you to react to it. But I'm glad it found its way into your favorites to watch either way.

Myrtenaster18

Girly you need a little bit of chibi RWBY, but congrats on your RWBY graduation. You passed the trail period, aka vol 1-3

Tigerhawk

This is more of a production note rather than a spoiler. if you pay close enough attention to team RNJR you'll notice that they always leave an open spot for where Pyrrha would be standing if she was still alive.

Todd Lucas

"Oh...hi...HI!" Wee Lass reacts to Wee Lad's introduction :) And I'm sorry...the abrupt "WHAT THE F*** IS THAT?!!?" following moment s later made me shoot coffee out my nose! ha ha ha ha

Todd Lucas

And I can't wait till Mosco sees the grimm that shows up later...especially because it is based on Scottish folklore. :)

Dayash

ill say this now in the least spoilery way possible bc it always confuses people: When the evil lady tells Cinder that her being a maiden brings with it a crippling weakness, she doesnt mean Being A Maiden makes her weak against Silver Eyes, it's something else.... I would recommend going back to the Vol3 episode where we see Cinder with Mercury and Emerald fighting Autumn (the previous Fall Maiden) to see if you catch what it is :)

SportySpice

Fans really need to stop telling you and Elijah that you shouldn’t watch the intros because of “spoilers”. The show runners wouldn’t give you the intro/OP at the end of ep 1 of each volume if they didnt want you to see it and speculate.

Dayash

SIDENOTE idk who said to you that you cant watch the Volume 4 intro, you definitely can BUT only after Volume 4 Episode 5 (the title starts with an M) because thats up to where it spoils Volume 4 for you. Apart from that it is perfectly fine to watch it I really dont know why someone said it spoils Volume 5 maybe they got confused with a different intro (im being super genuine other RWBY feel free to agree on this)

Luminaxtea

RoosterTeeth was bad about spoilery thumbnails too, but Crunchyroll takes the cake for that one time when volume 9 was airing that they used a spoiler for one chapter's thumbnail and then changed it to an even more spoilery thumbnail. So the moral of the story is that it's for the best that all of the chapters don't have thumbnails on Mosco's computer.

Jonathan Morgan

Please don't worry about "spoilers" in the intro. This isn't a manga adaptation where they put stuff they assume people have read ahead in the the intros. They're good to watch at the end of every Volume premiere

Lt. Waffles

Still my favorite Grimm design in the entire show

Dragonrune

We do not know if Summer has died. Her headstone is just a marker. So far, Summer is just MIA.

CRuhl_Para_TPT911

You can see the more worn condition of Ruby’s cape. Her outfit has also changed to be more like Penny’s. She has also obviously developed the Petal Burst further so as to actually disincorporate herself. You will also see a change as she fights. There is a lot less “carefree” in her attitude, and a lot more grim focus and a bit of anger.

Faroth

Mosco: farm boy has Hazel eyes - welp... This is awkward...
