Dre

Fellow Patrons…. send her digital hugs! As the thumbnail suggests she was hit hard by that forest training scene. :(

Wil DeYoung

It's not hope, it's emotional damage. This volume was rough for many of us who were in denial over Pyrrha. Me included, she was and still is my favorite RWBY character.

Derek Gaschler

I was disappointed it was a single episode until I remembered which one it was, and saw the thumbnail. <3 Mosco

Meet Klein Seben, the seven dwarfs to Weiss’ Snow White! Many people in the FNDM after this episode started calling him Weiss’ Real Dad, especially because of her father’s actions this episode. Many people speculated that Klein is the only reason Weiss made it to Beacon with a shred of her kindness left. The eye color change is connected to his Semblance, which is that he is all of the seven dwarfs in one character, and every one of them deeply cares for Weiss. In the scene just outside her father’s office, we see Doc, Grumpy, Sneezy, and then Happy.

Special K

I knew you were going to have a hard time with the end of this one. Every time I rewatch this series and I come back to the Pyrah moments, I have the exact same reaction as the first time I saw it. As heartbreaking as it is, this a beautiful representation of how people deal with loss and grief and the actions one takes to move on. Hang in there! It just keeps getting better!

RetroBeastto

So Weiss is based of Snow White and Klein is based off the Seven Dwarfs due to his split personalities. You can tell when his personality changes when his eye colors change.

Eric Smith

Don't mind me, just here to yell "DUTCH ANGLE" in the comments 😇

How long? Another five volumes :-( And more. One of my best friends gave me a vial, simply of gold glitter, on a golden chain much like the chain she had to her ear rings. She called it 'Pyrhha dust' and I have worn it pretty much since Feb 13, 2016. Yes Volume 3, Chapter 12 came out the day before Valentine's Day. Tragic. On a somewhat brighter (and yet darker) note, you mentioned Ren and Nora. Without any spoilers (and I wouldn't dare spoil my favorite volume and my favorite arc of this story in volume 4), part of your answer was revealed in Volume 3 Chapter 1 when the entirety of RWBY and JNPR shared ramen at the onset of the Vytal Festival. Nora revealed that both her and her Ren don't have their parents. Was that a year before Beacon? At infancy? At 6 or 7 years of age? Keep watching. Sadly, stories just like this must be widespread in Remnant in a cruel world with monsters potentially hiding behind every bush and where children are taught to murder them. This chapter hit you harder than any so far, Mosco. I'm sorry Elijah isn't there with you right now. I'm glad she was there for Volume 3. This show has a rainbow of smiles and a boatload of tears, Mosco. As one RWBY character eventually says "I love you just the way you are". Despite the tears, I'd never change a thing about RWBY. Well maybe one thing and you touched on it in your outro. I wish we had been with Jaune when he found out about Pyrhha.

So the problem with the Dust embargo is that Dust is the main resource in how other Kingdoms defend themselves from dangers, including Grimm. Not to mention Dust is used to power everyone’s cars and electric and heating. Dust is the universal power grid for the world of Remnant. So Ironwood ordering an embargo could potentially cause so many issues for the rest of the world if they run out of Dust. Weiss is the heiress because Winter basically ran off and joined the military and wanted nothing to do with the family name. The whole reason RNJR was going to Shion in the first place was because they had an air ship they could hopefully catch a ride on so they could get to Mistral faster. I like the subtle detail that you can see the demolished ship in the background once they find the Huntsman. Weiss means that the rest of the world wasn't there at Beacon when everything went down so they don't know the full story in reply to Jacques "can you believe there are people that blame Atlas for what happened?" I’ve always loved that shot of Ruby walking at night with the fireflies right before discovering Jaune. Absolutely gorgeous and to think the series only gets more beautiful from here.

CheetsAC7

The ending scene with Jaune training is probably one of the hardest scene in RWBY, in my opinion. One of the most emotional scenes, and you can feel how the crew really put their full effort into it. We were all there, Mosco. All that said, I really am glad they made the scene. It's such a real and powerful scene that connects so well. We all miss her, and remember her in our hearts. And we keep moving forward.

Miholiday

It doesn't matter how many times I rewatch this show, the scene with Jaune training to the video with Pyrrha makes my cry

CheetsAC7

Also wanted to say, that is probably the hardest I've cried to a reaction in a long time. Right there with you.

Rod

My hugs as well. Keep the tissues around, this is probably the worst, but there will be random reminders for all the losses, some so quick as to be seldom noticed.

BrightHeart

in terms of why it passed to Weiss instead of Winter. Winter basically passed on it when she joined the military rather than go into the family business.

CrowOfAFeather

Aw, Mosco...we know. It's an emotional punch in the gut. I wish Elijah had been there for this chapter too. :( They actually used the old engine for Pyrrha's model here, and not an updated one.

Celly

I wanted to add this. Rooster Teeth also produced a show called Red Vs Blue. Jen Brown was the voice actor that did the voice of Pyrhha Nykos (as well as Lisa Lavender, multiple times appearing as a broadcast journalist). Jen also did the voice of major characters in Red vs Blue and Camp Camp also by Rooster Teeth. She also did the voice of Harley Quinn in the DC Universe online MMO. I have had to hear that voice for so many years after End of the Beginning.

Rachel Mae

Yeahhhhhhhhhhh we've all been there 😭 I've said it before and I'll say it again, RWBY handles grief better than any show i've ever seen. Keep moving forward ❤️🤍🖤💛

jessie H

Klein is based on the seven dwarves Emotional support gf! You are needed!

LucidDreamWolf88

I hope you and Elijah ca get Morgan to react to the RWBY color trailer and the show also! I’d love to see Morgan react to it also lol

LikeCat

26:00 Halandil's words just ring in my mind (not because I rewatch(ed) that one scene in particular MANY times since when C4 began): Its okay crying's good. (Along with a few scenes Thimble's whole thing, Sir Julius's many amazing bits and Bolaire with the kids - That was an unexpectedly wholesome scene, not at all not welcome)

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

Don't worry, my dear, you're hardly the first reactor to burst into tears the moment Pyrrha appears on the screen in this episode. But as much as this hurts, remember that it's also a chance for CRWBY to process *their* grief as well.

Ryan

Hamish is going to need combat pay after volume four. Whitley: *appears* Mosco: "I've known this prick for five seconds and I don't trust him!" (drink) --- I am glad that Elijah gave you *no* warning as to what was coming in this episode. Jaune's last moments with Pyrrha hurts more since it comes out of the blue. And the detail that they animated her with the old Poser rig; she never got a Maya rig. Pyrrha's death could easily fall into the "woman in the fridge" trope, but I don't think it does. Or at least, it subverts it. Jaune is not your classic prince charming, knight in shining armor. He's a boy playing dress up in his grandfather's armor, trying to be a hero. And he failed. He'll probably be haunted by the "what if?" of that night for the rest of his life - what if he had stayed at the door? Would he been able to hold off Cinder long enough for Phyrrha to gain the Fall Maiden's powers? In another life, would it be Pyrrha who had to go on with life, remembering Jaune dying in her arms? I'm sure there's fanfics from that premise... But the scene also shows how well written the show is. Despite the episodes being, on average, half the length of a normal cartoon, they can do so much with so little. Jaune doesn't even speak in this scene - we get everything we need from the animation. --- Good thing nothing else traumatic happens this season, right? ...right? --- Klein is based on a Rubik's cube. Ren and Nora met at a pie eating contest. Nora won, obviously. Ren wasn't a contestant, he was one of the people bringing the pies and was the only one who could keep up with Nora.

Arashi

Whitley is... a position. A lot of folks want to punch him in the face. Others give him some slack because... well he was left the Jackass, but even the latter want to punch early 'era' Whitley. Nora rather briefly (and quickly) mentioned part of her back story with Ren in Volume 3 Chapter 1 at the ramen stand when she was doom-spiraling ("Ren and I have no homes!") but that's about all at this point. Klein's eyes are an indicator of which personality is 'in charge'. He has seven you know. That's a lot for such a small, dwarf-ish, fella. Red eye was pretty Grumpy though, but was balanced by gold being so Happy. The recording is rough, very much so. But hey, you (more or less) got through it. I'm sure there won't be a huge reminder complete with expanding this parts background theme into a full song later in the series to, you know, reeeeeaaallly dig the knife in more. As for how long... well we've finished volume 9 and we're still feeling it so... mmm.

bloodyshadow1

I remember recommending rwby years ago so it's always funny hearing her complain about no one recommending it

Elana

And this is why people need to watch RWBY Chibi between Volume 3 and 4..to heal all the emotional damage.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

She fought the same Grimm you saw team RNGR fight last episode in her trailer.

Haverian

I’m not sure if you caught it, but Pyrrha’s model was still the same Poser model from volume’s 1-3. While everyone else moved on to the Maya engine, she remains unchanging, just as she was.

Geass

23:36 It is just a quirk of the character. His eyes change color to show which of his seven personalities is in control. Guess who he is inspired by.

Gihellcy

Klein Sieben, Schnee Family's butler, is based of the Seven Dwarves, like Weiss is based of Snow-White o/ In German, "Klein" means "Small" and "Sieben" means "Seven" ^^ Each eye color change is for one of the Seven Dwarves, as well as his attitude (red for Grumpy, for exemple) o/

Duke

Turns out Jaune's semblance revives the dead, so happy endings all around. Although it's weird he brings back Roman

Ann_Temki

There is something truly poetic about how Pyrrha’s message was the last thing fully animated in Poser before going to Maya, truly the end of an era

Verdant Crown

As Pyrrha herself said, "it is in passing that we achieve immortality". She will always be remembered and she will always be loved.

bloodyshadow1

the problem with Pyrrha is that she would have been perfect as the main character of another show. she's the strongest, best fighter, kindest soul we have. Any other series she would be the main character and have to grow into these things, but because the story is about RWBY, not JNPR she's not. She's the sacrificial lion to show that the show is going to get darker and that no one is safe, not even the strongest or the kindest

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Yeah...stabbing us in the heart at the end of volume 3 after tricking us into thinking this would be a cute show with fun ships and a story of fighting souless monsters, they just were not happy with the pain they gave us. They felt the need to keep us thinking about it. SO again, Welcome to RWBY

KellyBunny

soooo the thing to remember is we had a long LONG time between V3 and V4 because of the engine change. So like it was much less terrible to us watching live

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Weiss was talking about the rest of the world. They saw Atlas robots attacking Vale thanks to Cinder broadcasting it.

Todd Lucas

If you like RWBY....you and Elijah both would likely also appreciate another show they did not long ago called Gen:Lock. And they even have their own "Wee Lass" in the form of Cammie....voiced by none other that Maisie Williams!

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

He probably trains with that video every single night

Dre

The use of the song Forever Fall’s leitmotif during that scene always pulls at my heartstrings. It’s such a good musical choice.

man-of-bvz1n3ss

Jacques disinherited Winter when she left to join the military. He is a very interesting character, and you're already picking up on it- a complete asshole, but a lot of the things he says are true. Wow, I have never seen someone have such an extreme reaction to the Jaune and Pyrrha scene. Are you doing alright?

David Johnson

19:00 - Best recap of the Battle of Beacon ever...😁

Tigerhawk

True but it was a good way to throw off Neo.

man-of-bvz1n3ss

Because the producers have experience with it. Take a look at what the acronym in Phoenix's comment spells out....

Tigerhawk

This is more of a production note rather than a spoiler. if you pay close enough attention to team RNJR you'll notice that they always leave an open spot for where Pyrrha would be standing if she was still alive.

man-of-bvz1n3ss

For Volume 5, they decided to try something experimental. Volume 5 is a Coffee Shop AU where Team RWBY work in Ozpin's cafe as baristas and make pastries for 12 episodes. Team JNPR are a rival cafe next door owned by Qrow. Everyone is fine and just makes jokes about each other's names all the time. It's generally considered the entire FNDM's favorite Volume.

Matthew bauer

one of these words in there is correct and i wont say what :)

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

Well, that's what she'd have recorded it in, so it makes perfect sense. ;-)

Myrtenaster18

I believe it was in Vol3 when Weiss was training summoning with Winter that it was revealed that the Schnee's Semblance is heredetary from her moms side of the family. That armor is her grandfathers, who created the schnee dust company.

Jittercritter

Jacques has one of the most underrated voices in the show, the VA absolutely kills it. Not only does he sell his rage, he gets the personality exactly right and manages to provoke all the right reactions out of the audience. No one acknowledges how great he does because it’s such an insufferable character 😂 I absolutely love this season, it does a lot of work in expanding the character backstories, motivations, and worldbuilding and it doesn’t get enough love for that. I don’t mind the slower pace at all, I think it works really well for a recovery and exposition centric volume. I mean this volume is essentially a soft reboot of the show; as many people half joke, volume three is the ‘end of the prologue,’ I mean the last episode is literally CALLED ‘End of the Beginning.’ This volume had a lot to reestablish, and a lot to establish for the first time since we actually didn’t know very much about a lot of the characters in volumes 1-3. I still think they did a great job and I hope you love it as much as Elijah did!! Ruby reaching for the bug as she’s walking is the cutest little detail I love her so much

CaptainChar

the fact the writers got us to feel actual feelings though, speaks wonders on how well they've written the show and its characters

Konrad Dunbar

Weiss was saying that the people who thought Atlas attacked weren't in Vale/Beacon when it happened! Yeah episode 2's ending is super rough ;A;

Jittercritter

I NEED Adam of that punching bag (And Jacques)

Jittercritter

Roosterteeth does really good with themes of grief—the struggle to move forward after a loss is also extremely prevalent in Red vs Blue, the show Roosterteeth actually started off making.

Angelus Lupus

In case no-one has said it yet: That skewed camera, is called a Dutch Angle - no idea why. Anyway - Whitley reminds me of Draco Malfoy

Cinder's Apologist

way to give her more reason to cry. but you're not wrong; finding out this was a thing was a gut punch to be sure

Cinder's Apologist

my condolences... Pyrrha has become one of my absolute favorites as well; she wasn't that much of a fave the first few times I watched RWBY, but over time she has risen to be a favorite. I don't take the loss too hard mainly because I wasn't around to watch the earlier volumes as they happened, but I also write a lot of fanfic where nothing bad ever happened EEEEEVEEEEEERRRRR so yeah as for Winter, she's not the heiress because she ran away from home and Jacques disinherited her for it. also for Klein, here's a hint: Weiss Schnee is German for 'Snow White'... and Klein is a small fellow. I trust you can figure out the rest.

Raiku Yuri

Klein is supposed to represent the 7 dwarves since Wiess represents Snow White. His different eye colors represent the different personalities of the 7 dwarves. Light Brown (Doc), Red (Grumpy), Light Blue (Sneezy), Yellow (Happy), Pink (Bashful), Mint Green (Dopey), and Lavender (Sleepy). In this episode he starts off as Doc, then shifts to Grumpy to mock Jacques, then Sneezy when sneezing, and finally Happy when Wiess laughs.

Vince

The number of times I’ve cursed CRWBY by full name after this fucking scene in the woods with Jaune and the video 😂 this shit still hurts even years later

Jonathan Smith

I mentioned it in Elijah's patreon, but if you check out all of JNPR's deigns, they all have a touch of red and specifically in Nora's design, the heart keyhole on her shirt now has points on either side which I interpret as a broken heart.

zerolynx spacecat

Although it hurts and Il truly know it hurts ... its this loss that pushes jaun to continue to better himself ..and its true shes always with jaun from the pieces of armor of her is hie shield ..and from the red sash of hers that he now wears ..the memories jaun has of are important to him in his heart ...its real life feelings that are portrayed that many can relate to that makes rwby such a great series ..the story telling is phenomenal ..every element has a reason .......not spoiling it but some where in vol 6 not saying what but u will understand

SQX Barto

Full name is Klein Sieben, I think, which is Little Seven in German :)

SQX Barto

Some real-life happenings may cause the loss to hit harder right now.

SQX Barto

Also, punishing/torturing himself.

LawfulNugget

Not spoiling anything, but you should really invest in waterproof makeup if you keep watching rwby. I love them, but they pull no punches.

Stars CM

How it started: "OMG this show is great please recommend me more like it!" How it's going: "FUCK FUCKING FUCK AGGHHH HATE PAIN FUCK."

Cinder's Apologist

shame on me for not factoring in his last name... and I studied German in college!

Cinder's Apologist

it was only recently that I discovered the significance of Nora's heart keyhole having that specific design and I kick myself for not noticing sooner :'(

Jonathan Smith

I don't know if it's the real reason the CRWBY intended, but it's my interpretation.

The Great Quarter Past Five

(to the tune of "Do it for Her" from Steven Universe) Shield up! Grip tight! Keep your front foot forward And as you're moving forward Balance is the key...

Jonathan Morgan

One of the most subtly heartbreaking things about the Pyrrha scene is that she's *not* done in the new style. They went back and animated her in Poser. Even on a meta level, she didn't get to move on with everyone else...

Eme

I'm sorry :(

RiekerVerse

didn't see anyone answer your question about the lineage of the SDC, the answer is unfortunately simple; Jacque despises Ironwood, and Winter is an enlisted servicemember, she joined the military and in doing so Jacque cut her off from the family fortune and her birthright, passing it on to Weiss who he kept very close to his side for a long time, hence how she was when we met her, she was sheltered, and as such was parroting much of her father's opinion of the world, now that she's seen what's out there, she's had an opportunity to grow, and I love her all the more for it!

CRuhl_Para_TPT911

Yep, Weiss would have to be going to Atlas to continue Hunter training at this stage. Right now Beacon is only accepting Grimm. 😂 Other signs that Jacque is a self-important weasel include his desk sitting on an elevated portion of the room, and of course no chairs in front of the desk forcing those to stand. Also of note is the only picture of family members on his desk is Whitley. “Can you believe there are still people in this world that blame Atlas for what happened to Beacon? To Vale?” Jacque is fuming at the fact that most everyone not at the Vytl Festival places some blame and suspicion on Atlas. Of course that being a secondary objective of Cinder’s plan. Once her virus took control of the CCCT, she had sole control of information coming out of Vale. And then had it scramble the system as they retreated. So to many in Remnant will view them with the same trust you’d show a Beowulf delivering your pizza.

Curtis Knapp

The writers really knew what they were doing in this Volume. Everyone had to adjust and reaquire their purpose. And it mirrors what was happening at RT since they were still dealing with the loss of Monty Oum. Move Onward, Not There Yet.
