Patch, it’s where the Xiao-Long/Rose/Branwen family lives. Anima. All the Kingdoms are named for the Capital City. So Beacon Academy is located near Vale, Kingdom of Vale; Haven Academy is in Mistral, Kingdom of Mistral; Shade Academy is in Vacuo, Kingdom of Vacuo; and Atlas Academy is in Atlas, Kingdom of Atlas (formerly Kingdom of Mantle) Great War was 80 years before the Vale Arc. Most of us are pretty sure that the King of Vale was one of Oz’s incarnation. Book Spoiler!!!!!! We’ve already met a character with 1 Faunus parent and 1 human parent: Velvet the Rabbit girl.

EDHPlayer

And here we have the final batch of WoR episodes, which makes me sad because they were fun interludes during waiting for every episode

Luna

City-school Vale-beacon Mistral-haven Atlas/mantel-atlas Vacuo-shade

Luís Pacheco

Haven is the school Mistral is the kingdom Anima is the continent It's kind of like Oxford Un.-UK-Europe

David Johnson

Sounded like "Hatch" to me...but I'm not sure I'm hearing it any better than you. One of the thumbnails it recommended was an Elijah RBWY video...and yes, it was a tad spoilery. Did you notice the Charizard continent also had a battle marker on it in the Faunus episode?

LikeCat

Its Patch... Where Ruby and Yang live(d) with their dad Tai, and where they went to school (Signal Academy) before going to Beacon. Also Tai and Qrow were/are teachers there.

Nicholas Yeager

The island off of Vale is named Patch. It's relevant because its where Zwei lives.

Dre

You know. I’m not sure what animal Ghira (Blake’s dad) is. I think he’s a panther/puma?

Rachel Mae

IE "why didn't the title of heiress go to Winter" in v4 Jacques tells Ironwood "a daughter you stole" and says to Weiss "you think running away like your sister will make us stronger..." The implication is that Winter left/gave up the title of Schnee heiress to join the Atlas military

Flufux

He's based on Bagheera from the Jungle Book, so with that logic, he would be a black leopard. (FIY: a black panther is really just a leopard or jaguar with a different fur colour)

CrowOfAFeather

(Reposted and edited) "The small island of PATCH." That's where Yang and Ruby lived! :D 7:38 "To the east of Sanus is Remnant's second largest landmass, Anima. " Yes, Winter went to Atlas Academy and then immediately joined the military. Yeah, Weiss mentioned that her father married into the Schnee name last volume. Right before he slapped her like the monster he is. Winter isn't inheriting the company because she joined the military specifically so she could distance herself from her father. But Jacques sees it as Ironwood "stealing her" away from him. The Great War happened roughly 90 years before the beginning of V1. Friendly reminder: Vale, Mistral, Atlas, and Vacuo are the kingdoms, with their cities named "The City of-" with the same name. Beacon, Haven, Atlas, and Shade are the Huntsmen/Huntress ACADEMIES within their respective city. :) Summary: Continents: Sanus - Kingdoms: Vacuo(west) and Vale(east) with the City of Vacuo and City of Vale, as well as Shade Academy and Beacon Academy respectively. Solitas - Kingdom: Atlas, with City of Atlas ,and Mantle being the former main city. Has Atlas Academy. Anima - Kingdom of Mistral, with the City of Mistral, housing Haven Academy. Menagerie - Kuo Kuana (city where Blake is currently at, and where her home is)

A suggestion when you rewatch these: keep watching for a couple more seconds into the fade-to-black because Qrow has one more sentence in most (all?) of these that he says (mutters) then. You caught some of them, but missed others in your efforts to avoid spoilers. (I'll note that the end commentary in these videos contain no spoilers (and aren't even about RWBY) but of course youtube's thumbnail suggestions can be spoilery) Also it occurs to me that if you want to catch the names of places, the French subtitles would still be of use in that regard.

BGTitan

Continent - Saunus, Kingdom - Vale, Academy - Beacon. A small island of Patch off the coast. Patch is where Ruby and Yang grew up, which is why Qrow makes a comment about it being a nice place to raise a family. We also get to see Mountain Glenn again as an example of place that fell to the Grimm. Continent - Anima, Kingdom - Mistral, Academy - Haven. Continent - Solitas, Kingdom - Atlas (previously Mantle), Academy - Atlas (renamed from Alsius). Winter did indeed go to Atlas and then was funneled straight into the military. Continent - Saunus, Kingdom - Vacuo, Academy - Shade. Sun grew up in Vacuo but transferred to Mistral and that’s where the rest of his team is from.

Elias Cristerna

i now just realizing that Weiss' Grandpa was literally armored industrialist Santa Claus. Probably wouldn't have caught on to that had Qrow not literally called him "Old Nick" and that images of him show him wearing a cape that is red with white fluffies over his armor.

milkystross

The main city in each kingdom always has the same name as the kingdom itself, Haven is not a city, its the academy in the CITY of Mistral, which is the capital city of the KINGDOM Mistral Also that King of Vale, huh? Its never stated in the show but I mean...I think we can figure out who that guy was or uhh, is now

Phoenix_mercury

pop this into the discord as she generally doesnt read patreon comments cz of spoilers

supersoaker

Another thing to note about Sun, is that he didn't know much about the White Fang or racism towards faunus when he was talking to Blake in Vol 1. Sure he gets chased by humans but he also doesn't have any problem with them. Just prejudice equality in Vacuo, everyone gets it, or Tortuga in Pirates of the Caribbean, "If everywhere in the world was like this, no one would feel unwanted". (I forgot the exact phrase)

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

Fun fact: "Jacques Gelée" (Papa Schnee's birth name) is French for "Jack Frost". The mythological figure of Jack Frost, however, is known in France as Bonhomme d'Hiver ("Good Man Winter")

NERD!

They were making a red vs blue joke, another show by rooster teeth

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

The island that Qrow said is a good place to raise a family is called Patch. That's where Ruby and Yang live.

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

As you're rewatching Volume 4 with your friend, pay special attention not just to what Ozpin Tells Oscar about the schools, but what shapes the four relics take when Qrow is telling RNJR about them. (Also maybe refresh yourself on the various titles the Wizard of Oz likes to go by...)

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Winter left her family to join the military. That's why herself dad yelled at Ironwood tgat ge stole her frim him. So she was basically dissowned would be my guess.

Ryan

Weiss' grandfather sounds like he was a good man. A saint, even... Oh, "Equilibrium" is such a fucking good movie. "Surrogates", too. YouTube is trying HARD to spoil you. One of the thumbnails was for one of Elijah's reactions...

Ryan

I just realized... what if Mantle forbidding all art and self expression is a nod to "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town", a stop motion Christmas movie from the 70s where Burgermeister Meisterburger makes all toys illegal... it's a stretch, but given the inspiration for Weiss' grandfather...

Zak Nelfian

pretty sure blake's father is a panther faunas

Pagemaster Kira Yuu

Anyone else struggling with the SMALL but IMPORTANT "Things". That Mosco is forgetting that has been showed in the video. And has been talked about within season 4🥹

man-of-bvz1n3ss

The last batch of WoRs is probably the best of them all in terms of worldbuilding, so I've been super excited for this! My theory is Salem started the Great War, it seems like the kind of thing she'd do. And yeah, the King of Vale is almost certainly a previous incarnation of Ozpin given the stuff we know. Fans nicknamed him King Ozymandias. While his sword is most prominent, rather than Ozpin's characteristic cane, if you look closely at some shots you can see him holding what appears to be the cane.

Pagemaster Kira Yuu

Also, my side Theory for the king of Vale, is being Jaune's grandfather👀🥰

Ryan

That could explain why his is the only weapon that isn't "also a gun."

Geass

While we never get confirmation, I believe Ozpin was the Warrior King of Vale, before he was Ozpin. In volume 2, he gave a speech saying it was 80 years since the end of the Great War, and multiple statements throughout the first three volumes suggest that he is older than he appears. He is also exempt from the color naming rule, which only started after the end of the war. Telling Oscar he built the academies also suggests it was him, along with a few other hints I won't get into.

man-of-bvz1n3ss

Not really? I don't know what you're talking about

man-of-bvz1n3ss

I don't think enough time would have elapsed for that kind of thing to be forgotten.

man-of-bvz1n3ss

I mean, she did ask to be told in the comments.

man-of-bvz1n3ss

Well, following the WoRs there was Fairy Tales...

Sam

The reason The SDC wasn't given to Winter isn't laid out but the heavy implication is Winter decided to become a huntress and join the Atlas Military and Jaques didn't like that, and decided to revoke her status and hand it off to Weiss, much like he later did to Weiss by handing it off to Whitley when she too did things he disapproved of

Lavender Onyxheart

Yes, it's Qrows fault you can't hear him, not the woman that's half deaf~ :p for information the island is Patch, it's where Ruby and Yang are from, the continent Mistral is on is Anima, this was said already in vol 4 also

Cinder's Apologist

okay, here we go! Remnant geography time! KINGDOM OF VALE Capital city: Vale Home to Beacon Academy Continent: Sanus Notable features: Emerald Forest, Forever Fall Forest, Mountain Glenn (defunct), Island of Patch (Ruby and Yang's home; hence why Qrow talks about raising a family there) KINGDOM OF MISTRAL Capital city: Mistral Home to Haven Academy Continent: Anima Notable features: diverse terrain, derelict settlements due to Grimm and bandits, and other things that are spoilers for now KINGDOM OF ATLAS Capital city: Atlas Home to Atlas Academy Continent: Solitas Notable features: formerly Kingdom of Mantle, with the city of Mantle living literally in the shadow of Atlas; icy tundra dominates the landscape, also there will be a focus on Mantle/Atlas later on in show KINGDOM OF VACUO Capital city: Vacuo Home to Shade Academy Continent: Sanus Notable features: vast desert and wasteland, very few permanent settlements, no formal government; you can learn more about Vacuo in the novels by E.C. Myers that follows Team CFVY - "After the Fall" and "Before the Dawn" which I highly recommend to anyone interested in the wider lore of RWBY re: Ghira and the Belladonnas The Jungle Book was inspiration for some of the chief Faunus characters. In this case, Ghira is Bagheera, the panther. Kali is a nod to a Hindu deity. So yes, Blake absolutely had feline traits from both parents. re: SDC So far, this is the most direct info we get regarding Nicholas Schnee, but if you piece together what you learn about the Schnee family, you can see the illusions... Nicholas Schnee - Jolly Old Saint Nick aka Santa Claus Jacques Gele - Jack Frost Winter Schnee - Jadis the White Witch Weiss Schnee - Snow White, literally how her name translates in German re: the Great War You can safely assume the King of Vale was indeed Ozpin - or a former Ozcarnation. The green is on the mark, but he also wields a scepter that looks awfully like his cane ;)

Raiku Yuri

Ozpin also tells Oscar "I helped build that school and the tea set was a gift to the man who runs in now." so you are on the right path when you thought back to the talk between Oz and Oscar.

Rachel Mae

The relics don’t have a particular shape in Qrow’s story. They’re just circular. You’re thinking of something Mosco hasn’t seen yet

CrowOfAFeather

Couldn't be. It was about 90 year ago by the time of V1, and Jaune explains that his "great-great-grandfather used his sword to fight in the war".

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

Are they? Then what's the bit I'm thinking of? Whatever it is, Mosco better hurry up and watch that part so what I was trying to get at makes sense.

K. Grinn Tighe

Monitors stop me if this is spoilers, but I truly believe that the great war was Ozpin's and Salem's last fight 😅

Mare

Ghira's Faunus trait is a "Panther." So yes, both Blake's parents belong to the Felidae class so they're all cats. According to the "The World of RWBY: The Official Companion" Guide": (P.126) "Ghira is a muscular, hairy panther Faunus who relies on his sharp claws during combat. His name is derived from Bagheera, Moweli’s panther mentor in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book." "Kali is a cat Faunus who appears to have passed most of her physical traits to her daughter. She is sociable and playfully mischievous, and will fight ferociously to defend her home. Kali means “black” in Sanskrit."

PheonixCantra

They said it in Volume 2. The Great War took place only 80 years before the events of the show.

Suplee215

One quick thing is the world is made up of city states. Like Athena or Rome. Theres the capital city that is well guarded and controls the land and then the city's territory. Like Rome and the Roman Empire. Another aspect of confusion is the academies are so important that they get referred to as if they're another city and not just a university inside a city. Like Haven, which is Haven Academy.

Mare

Yeah pretty much, though the World of RWBY Official Companion book states “Panther.”

Suplee215

Timeline great war was about 80 to 100 years earlier. One thing not touched on here is the generations tend to be a little shorter. While in real life its realistic for a 100 year old who fought in the war to be walking around that doesnt appear to be the case. Hence Nikolas Schnee (who is Santa claus, fun fact) being born 80 years ago and being spoken as if thsts a long time ago.

man-of-bvz1n3ss

The part you are thinking of is several Volumes ahead, dude. We won't find out the shape of the Relics for a while.

Suplee215

Agreed. Jt is possible winter decided in order to be free of him she had to do that herself though.

NeoScarlet

*Tip for avoiding being spoiled by YouTube* If you're using Firefox there's an add-on/extension you can get called "Unhook" which gives a long list of settings for hiding stuff on YouTube--such as hiding Recommended Videos and the Comments section, and you can even disable the home page feed so that when you open YouTube it's mainly just a blank page aside from Subscribed channels on the left and the search bar at the top. A friend of mine recommended it to me and it's definitely helped a lot for cutting back on all the Doomscrolling here in the U.S. (Unfortunately YouTube's recent UI update--aside from looking atrocious--has also started cramming 3-4 recommended videos in an overlay at the end of videos, which Unhook doesn't seem to be able to hide yet, but if you're stopping the video before it actually ends that shouldn't really be an issue either)

Wilhelm Hedin

I understood "no one knows who shot first" as Crow saying it doesn't matter who shot first.

Nihilero

I've basically been watching the show along with you, but my current theory is that Oz/maybetheking is the wizard from the story of the seasons. It could explain the king's skills. Plus, it mentioned the king carried a scepter. Maybe he switched to a cane?

Nihilero

Mistrals ruler had a similar outline. I forgot the word I wanted... like shape?

Arashi

Current real world life expectancy is edging toward 100. That said, jump back to 1920-30s and the expectancy (in 'developed' countries) was only just breaking into 60s. My guess is that prior to the Great War, development was probably largely aligned to the 1890s and the dawn of the Industrial (read Mantle) Revolution where getting to 50 was notable. Dust and Grimm throw modifiers on each direction in ways we can't really account for (sure that nightmarish creature can and will try to kill the whole village, but the crystal that guy over there has let's him shoot lightning at them) so I kind of put them at a near wash. So the end of the Great War and the birth of Nikolas Schnee (who sounded like quite the Jolly Ol' Soul) was likely 60-75 years ago from 'current' Remanent.

Tigerhawk

Anyone else notice how the King of Vale's crown and sword were gold? Interesting color choice considering every other silhouette is a solid color

Wil DeYoung

Spoiler Alert, theory time: I might sound stupid because I've only ever seen a lot of these WoRs once so some of the details didn't stick out to me in the past but coming back after so long and after volume 9 really shows the forethought in some of these details. The thing I wanted to talk about is the King of Vale, who was probably Oz, having a crown, sceptre and sword. Now since we all know you can't have all 4 relics in the same place, was he using three of them to end the war? If so, why was only the crown and sword in gold or is this implying that it was only two relics and the "sceptre" was the cane? I doubt we'll ever get a real answer to this.

Jittercritter

This is also why Blake had to explain so much Faunus history to Sun despite Sun being a Faunus himself. There isn’t much of a divide between Faunus and Humans in Vacuo (presumably aside from the Schnee mining plants) so Sun wouldn’t have much context for any of that, he wouldn’t have had to deal with much of that growing up like Blake did.

SauceyRed

That but also I assume they just *actually* don't know who started it, for whatever reason (such as inconsistent accounts from different people, those involved died, or whatever).

Damien Christoff

I know this is really late but I like to compare the kingdoms to many of our real world countries. For example atlas being based on the United States. Makes it a little easier to understand what they are about

Taigan

I can’t believe that no one else has pointed this out but @47:06, the King of Veil is fighting with “only his sword and his scepter.” Doesn’t that scepter look … familiar?

Christopher Groenewald

Blake is actually not a cat because that's what her parents are. Her father's a black leopard and her mother's a wolf. She's a house cat.
