First! HIIIII MOSCOW ((i hope i typed that right lmao)) Love seeing you pump yourself up for each intro.... also, I think it's pronounced Jee-Jee, oh you just said it right as I typed that! Haha!

I wanna draw some attention to particular lyrics, and mention ones from a previous song as well. A lot of people tend to interpret Odysseus’s arc within the musical in a certain way, but it’s one I actually disagree with. I won’t go into it too much yet — there’s a great post a friend of mine made on tumblr that outlines a lot of it— but I’ll mention what I can. Namely, while some might say that this section/much of his arc is about Odysseus choosing to ‘become the monster’ I actually think it’s less about that, and more about him accepting what and who he already is, and has been for some time. Again, I’ll go more into this another time, but here are the lyrics I wanted to mention. In ‘Monster’ at one point he says: Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves/And deep down I know this well Now, the ruthlessness lyrics are of course from Poseidon’s song. But “deep down I know this well” is a callback to something else. Namely, the second song in the musical, “Just a Man”: I’m just a man, fighting for his life/Deep down I know I would trade the world to see my son and wife The phrase “deep down” isn’t being repeated on accident. This isn’t merely Odysseus discovering that he can embrace these things or will have to do them to get home. Rather, it’s him *recognizing and accepting*the fact that he has always been that person. Even if he feels guilt, or may try to find another way, or has been pushed further due to hardship, at the end of the day he has ALWAYS been someone who was willing to do ‘monstrous’ actions if it meant leaving alive and having the chance to see Penelope and Telemachus. Which may not seem like a huge distinction to some with how the song and character are often interpreted, but in my opinion it’s actually very significant and says a lot more than people realize.

cosmotron

There’s nothing to indicate that’s true. People pass it around like it is, but there is nothing in the musical or in actual sources of The Odyssey that says that.

To get home.. after that long.. I think I would probably chose to become a monster too.. no more kindness.. no more risks... just pushing as hard as possible to get back to the people I love... After 12 years.. I can't blame him. But.. I also think I would have listened to Athena back at the cyclops.. "Finish him" . Ignoring and turning on Athena there is what sent him spiraling on this path and he has no one to blame but himself.

Lupikus

Circe gave him one of her boats :>

This is the end of act one of two. Usually, musicals have only two acts, with an intermission in the middle of the story. In Wicked, for example, act 1 finishes with the song "Defying Gravity".

Also, I highly recommend Clover's animatic for The Underworld, I'm surprised more people don't react to that one, I think it's lovely (not that the one here isn't of course).

Underworld: The spirits all are saying what they're last thoughts were. So the men all died calling out for the captain, Polities died still believing in Open Arms, and his mother died waiting for him. None of them can actually see him. Speaking of his mother, she is actually voiced by Jorge's real life mom. Fun fact, she had to record her part several times because she would start crying thinking about not being around for her kids. She did wonderfully in my opinion. Full stop if he'd killed the cyclops there would have been no Poseidon encounter at all. Wind bag or no wind bag. Hell there wouldn't have been a need for wind bag if he'd killed the cyclops because that was Poseidon's storm to begin with. At the very least he shouldn't have doxxed himself. No Longer You: Would it really be a visit with a prophet if the protag didn't completely miss the double meanings in all the lyrics? Monster: My favorite part of this song is when Ody is talking about all the villains/antagonists he's come across and then ends off with talking about himself, including himself among them. I love him going through how each of them have a reason why they did what they did, justifiable or no. The cyclops was avenging his pet sheep, Circe was preemptively protecting her nymphs, and Poseidon was doing it as a warning to others not to cross him. None of them feel guilt for their actions because in their minds it's justified. .....So he decides that's how he's going to be. Love a good negative character arc. A real turning point and a fantastic end to Act 1. I'm sure it's only up from here.

Phoenix_mercury

he didnt need to kill poly, he just needed to *not* dox everything about himself lol

D3m0n

Probably people already pointed it out but his mother is dead because when they opened the windbag they were VERY Close to home like so close his mother could see them approach the harbor and then the storm took them away she thought they died so she went and walked into the sea to be with her son :'(

EDHPlayer

Funnily enough, Tiresias wasn't as vague in the Odyssey. He was actually a lot more specific in his instructions than you'd expect from a seer in Greek myths and tales. You're gonna get some people saying that Odysseus' mom died after witnessing the wind bag throw the fleet away from Ithaca. And that she died in a very specific manner. This is not so. This misconception likely arose from a Roman source, which came several hundred years AFTER Homer. The specific text says that she (going off on my own copy) "only my loneliness for you, Odysseus, for your kind heart and counsel, gentle Odysseus, took my own life away." In short, she died from grief, and it's never said when - only that it was during his time away - so for all we know she died before he left for Troy to head home.

cosmotron

I already commented to someone else earlier that it wasn't true the way it gets passed around like it is lol, that misinformation has really stuck.

Callsign-Corgis

Absolutely love Wolfwalkers! When it was movie night I forced everyone to watch it with me and man I cant stop going back to it. I first found it on YouTube cause someone did a music edit of scenes from the movie to Spirits "You can't take me" and it gave me literal chills

Callsign-Corgis

And 100% wouldve listened to Athena and axed the cyclops. Knowing what I know about blood fueds in ancient Greece i wanna say I could've done what Ody had done but st the same time, it is just a little babe so who knows :/

BakaSama

I can’t say for certain, but one reason the Underworld (Hades) is not presented in colors like red is because in Greek Mythology Hades isn’t the final destination of just wicked souls. All souls wind up in Hades and only those who have angered the Gods wind up in eternal torment. I can’t wait for next week when Mosco gets THUNDERSTRUCK! (Read that last part like AC/DC)

FuzzBird

LOVE Wolfwalkers! Cartoon Saloon are amazing ❤️

HeroNotFound

Hey Mosco, the reason that the underworld is green and not red is that they’re only in the river Styx, which is described as having a sickly green glow from the soles within the water

HeroNotFound

Mosco, no matter what anyone says, for thunderbringer you have to do Nielillustrations again

Lester Wiggins

All these comments, and no one has mentioned that Odysseus’s mother was played by Jorge’s (Odysseus’ VA and creator of the musical) own mother? 😐

marauderluverz (Luci)

An element i really love in gigi's animatic is Penelope removing the headband that he took when polites died. Ive seen a lot of people describe it as the end of greeting the world with open arms since he is embracing the monster now. 😓

Zora Brightwood

Fun Fact(s): Ody's mother's part is sung by Jorge's mother. & In No Longer You you can hear in the middle end words in the background that hint to what happens next.

AgariGlaceon

I wonder if Mosco noticed what it was that Penelope ripped of Odysseus's head in Gigi's monster? XD

Sofí2110

I agree completely, I mean, him mentioning his own actions alongside the monsters, and how we see him in the very first song, he is a man that kills a child and sacks a city, and he justifies it, he always has a reason to do cruelty, and then he sees, every "monster" was exactly like that. He tried to escape it, to be more merciful, it was just for a tiny bit, hence letting even a dangerous creature like the cyclops leave. But the tragedy i feel, at least until this point in Monster, is that it was perhaps too little too late?

MarieDeFrance

Some fun facts,Odysseus falls into the Acheron river, the VA for Odysseus’s mom is also Jorge’s mom,the prophet was a girl in the original book, and from what I know Odysseus’s mom died by walking into the ocean trying to reach her son or she killed herself(I can’t remember which one)

sillyharpy

Fun fact, the name of the prophet is Tiresias

Deco the Artist

So glad to hear you've seen and loved Wolfwalkers~!

WOLFWALKERS IS PEAK!

Speed1247

That "I took too long" always brings me to tears. It hurts every time.

Geordie Robinson

Wolf walkers is a great movie, ive always thought it feels like an old story book :)

Geordie Robinson

On the discussion question total cop out but I wouldn't go to the trojan war if I have any choice

UNSCmistress Gaming

Funnily enough, Odysseus didn’t want to go either. He didn’t want to leave his wife and newborn baby. So he faked insanity. The other kings caught on and dragged him to war anyways.
