bad starts just happen. nothing to it.

Dre

“That’s the thing about this volume. It has some cool excellent moments… and some other moments I’m not thrilled about.” Yes that is the volume 5 experience. Writers who were still learning coupled with funds being siphoned off to other projects at the time made volume 5 a bit of a mess. 😅 Things get better from here on though. They learned a lot of lessons from volume 5 thankfully.

Moonas

For u openings are spoilers but for ppl who was waiting years for new volume those was just hype and excitement to know how that happend. Also - Adam is pathetic, he is a little hurted boy who think he is big, he was "powerful" in Beacon bc of Salem, not bc of his own power. That's the point. What interesting is in Raven going to Tai? Her other portals are in Heaven so that's the only one left.

Dreanner95

I get that stuff gets lost is the supar pacing of this Volume but Salem did say to Cinder that she wants Ruby alive while Cinder wants her dead. So right now Cinder doesn't really know how to square that. I think Cinder thougt she was clever in luring Ruby there and hoped she would die in the conflict without Cinder needing to do a thing. Also past Volumes made it clear that she craves the power the maidens can give her so I can see how that overrides her desire for revange at the moment.

Stacy Person

yeah this is definitely the weakest volume of the show but it’s all up from here, every volume outdoes the last. Volume six is so SO good

EDHPlayer

One thing I really love about Raven and Cinder’s fight is the detailing of experience. Raven has had the Maiden’s power for at least a decade, has honed it, and learned how to fight with it. Cinder meanwhile has had half of the power for at least few months and the full compliment for even less. She barely has any control and struggles where Raven is at ease. Cinder also had never gone up against someone stronger and more experienced than her before and her confidence had been the one thing she always held strong. But her ego got the better of her; she believed she would triumph, failing to understand that she was severely outclassed. The only time she had an upper hand was when Cinder used the power of her Grimm arm to overcome the distance. Every other time she was on the backpedal.

Ridzy

the reason there were so few white fang members is this was supposed to be a covert mission get in with Leo's help get the relic then blow up the school and leave having like 50 white fang members would draw to much attention and with the part where blake knocks adam down and you were wondering where his aura was it was active but remember aura doesn't make you an immovable object you still feel the force and weight of attacks its just you don't take physical damage while your aura is up like sword won't cut through your arm but you would still feel the weight of that attack and one last thing about maiden magic it is person preference all maidens can do whatever type of magic they want like fire, ice, lighting, wind

Spadeas

Just a little comment about Ruby's decision to send Yang and not go by herself. WE as spectator know that Ruby's power is a menace to Cinder, but she doesn't know that, she know on the other hand that Raven had no hesitation to open a portal so Cinder could attack her, while even if Raven said that she might be not kind with Yang, the thruth is there is more room for Yang to work with Raven than anyone in the academy. So no, for Ruby that was the best option.

EP 13: I love that you can tell the difference in experience (with fighting and the Maiden powers) between Raven and Cinder. Cinder uses her powers a lot, frequently creating new weapons (instead of using her actual weapons that she discarded) and even summoning that huge fire sword seems to require a lot of energy and big gestures. Raven, on the other hand, uses her actual sword. And while her Dust-sheathes do keep breaking, she still has the base and doesn’t have to waste energy. Then when she creates her ice sword it’s a smooth, graceful movement. Honestly for a lot of the fight, Raven seems to have the advantage. And oh my god Team RWBY all in the same space! My babies! Ep 14: I will never be over the scene between Raven and Yang. The voice acting from Anna (Raven) and Barb (Yang) was so good. It’s still one of my favorite scenes in this whole show and a contender for my favorite scene of the volume. “Did you kill her too?” In reference to Raven killing the version of herself that would have fought for her family and tribe. Like whoa. Called out. And Raven is still one of my favorite characters. Her hypocrisy is what really sold me honestly, and hearing Yang getting to call her out is so cathartic. And the best part is, Raven knows! She knows she’s a frickin hypocrite! She knows she’s a frickin coward. And that's why Yang breaks down at the end of it, because Raven left again, picked running and hiding over protecting her child again. Yang was abandoned once again. While Yang doesn't hold Raven's opinion of things in high regard, it still doesn't feel especially great. The fact that the only portal option Raven had that wasn’t at Haven was Tai cracks me up. I just imagine her being like ‘don’t mind me just thoroughly lectured by our daughter, bye’. I mean, Adam is pathetic. That's the whole point. His big hold over Blake is psychological/emotional more than anything. So when he's the one on the backfoot, it makes sense that he'd be less intimidating. And like you said, this isn't the end of his involvement. I will say this, you are not alone in your feelings about the pacing of this volume. Volumes 4/5 share that complaint for me. However, what makes me enjoy 5 more than 4 and what made 5 my favorite volume at the time were those really cool character moments that we got. Volume 5 gets a lot of crap and, yeah, it’s not perfect. There’s a lot of standing around and talking (especially in that one dang house), repeated exposition, and the fight scenes in the main lobby of Haven Academy are a bit of a mess (again, lots of talking, disappearing fights in the background and teleporting), a couple episodes literally leave us exactly where we started with some plot lines. Even so, I remember Volume 5 was my favorite volume when it aired, and that was mainly due to all those little character moments we got along the way. The RWBY reunions, every scene Yang had with Raven (including of course the final confrontation), Ilia’s Arc and the entirety of Blake’s side of Episode 10, Weiss and Yang’s talk in episode 8, and the Maiden Fight. So, yeah, V5 is a bit of a mess at times but I still have a soft spot for it. But now, we’re on to V6, and it’s only up from here.

Etheriell

Just as a note, the reason she went to Tai was he was the only portal she could use. If you remember, the explanation of her semblance was she can only go to people she's bonded with. And we were only given three names (theoretically she could have had more bonds since then but there's been no evidence to the contrary that it's only those three). Since both Yang and Qrow were there, she could only portal to Tai if she wanted to get away. So that's why

Lt. Waffles

and volume 8 hurts. Definitely agree that the show only goes up from here. Just like with the beginning volumes: everything gets better each volume. Writing, animation, scene layout, suspense, details, lore; all of it.

Just don't listen to the full song

SportySpice

“This can’t be the big endgame for Adam!” Good news, it’s not. Just press play. You keep pausing and digging yourself into expected payoffs, when the show is still in set-up. The White Fang was just there to blow up the Haven tower. This wasn’t meant to be the resolution to Adam’s plot or his personal arc with Blake and Yang. I will say I’m sort of giddy at the flaws youre picking at in V5 because V6 fixes everything and more. By V6E1 you can already feel the difference. CRWBY is very humble and responds well to constructive criticism (which kudos to them), and they took it in stride. And as noted, many of the problems are because Gray Haddock was literally embezzling resources and hijacking animators from RWBY. Needless to say, he was booted and as far as I know, no longer in the industry. The Raven/Cinder fight is genuinely good and clearly where a lot of the remaining resources in the volume were allocated (and for good reason). The Yang/Raven scene is still one of my favorites in the show. Yang wins the Big Boss Fight without throwing a single punch — Tai would proud she found a new way around an obstacle by keeping a level head.

Christopher Malone

Regarding the Orihime rant... that not a show thing but an ANIME thing in general, Dragon Ball, Bleach, Naruto, just about any big long running anime/managa will build up certain charcters during early arcs and then do FUCK ALL with them later on, the only show/manga that kinda avoided that is One Piece, shorter Manga based shows, and original anime that have a very specific story being told such as Gundam or that change casts/premis every season or so like the Transformers anime of the early 00.

Mare

This 100% 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

CorgiSnapz

This is what I have been saying for a while, to no avail. We have the context of what happens in the volume and can say 'oh yes of course that is a spoiler', but to someone with no context it just drives hype and curiosity about what is to come. For example, Volume 2's opening clearly shows Cinder with the maiden flame coming out of her eye, and NOW we understand the context but at the time, it would be another volume before we even knew maidens existed, much less what it looked like when they use their powers.

SportySpice

Honestly, the fact that the full song is more of a “torch song” is all the sweeter. That Yang is just so devoted, even if it means she might get hurt again. It would be bad if Blake proved all her fears right, but the point is that Yang is pining and earnest and mistrustful at this stage, but her feelings are true.

Mare

Just remember that RWBY is one BIG “Chekhov’s Gun.” In fact this episode alone has dozens upon dozens of Chekhov’s Guns. And to reiterate what someone else pointed. If you pause less, you’ll get your answers. In the overall narrative we are STILL early in Act 2. Truth bombs are still coming. And Act 3 is far off

CrowOfAFeather

LMAO NO, the past Spring Maiden was definitely not Summer Rose xD it's been a while, but Leo told us earlier this volume that the child inherited her powers, but they and the duties proved too much for her and she got scared and ran away! "This was over a decade ago." Summer and Raven were on the same team, thus the same age, and we know Summer started a family with Tai xD and Yang described her in V3 as "Super Mom; slayer of monsters and baker of cookies." This does not at all match with the child Spring Maiden lmao! Makes no sense for Summer's character OR timeline wise. Nope, all Maidens have the same powers. Cinder just loves fire because it goes well with her Semblance. Monty would most certainly be proud of what his friends have achieved each volume (yes, even 5, because it was predominantly out of their control), and that they are still continuing to keep his dream alive. He personally handpicked his friends to write the story as he had a rough storyline, but they helped fill it out. He handpicked the voiceactors as well! Raven killing the young Maiden because she was weak makes sense tho. She's a bandit; they are "killers and thieves" as Qrow put it. All they do for survival and power is attack and pillage. Raven has a portal to Tai, yes. Vernal is dead and she couldn't go to Qrow obviously, so she went to the only other person left she has a bond with to escape. Even if he's on a entirely different continent haha

Luminaxtea

Volume 5 is probably the most universally disliked Volume of all of them, especially as it was airing. You can really tell how rushed it was near the end with the last 3 or 4 chapters. Thankfully, this is the worst RWBY ever gets and I still mostly enjoyed it despite the flaws (I have seen many popular animes fumble it much harder in far less enjoyable ways, V5 really isn't that bad in comparison).

Taigan

Yes, but it gets worrying if you listen to *all* the lyrics. “And now you're standing here With that look in your eyes The look that makes me hope I'll just believe your lies” “The more I'm just defeated My past mistakes repeated” “Another chance to let you just destroy my pride” “That the one thing I can count on Is that I can't count on you”

Taigan

It’s funny. I was so drawn in by the story I honestly didn’t notice the animation downgrade in this volume. But having Mosco point it out it’s like, wow yeah.

Ryan

Chapter 13: Where's the fight budget this season? Here it is! Get ready for MAIDEN BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWL! Chapter 14: Thing is ... Adam is pathetic. He's a butthurt angry boy. His threat level is relative to the people he's threatening. And Yake and Blang have gotten stronger since the fall of Beacon. "I'm hoping it's got the knowledge you need!" Oh, it contains knowledge. Lots of knowledge. So much knowledge... --- As far as we know, Raven only has a portal to Qrow, Yang, Tai, and possibly Vernal, based on her opening a portal to bring Vernal, Cinder, Emerald, and Mercury into the fight. But Vernal is dead, Qrow and Yang are still at Haven - Tai was her only way out. I guess she never made a portal to Summer... You'd think a woman as adept at running away as Raven is would make bonds with as many people as possible so she could portal to anywhere. --- On to Atlas! What will we find it Atlas? Well there's going to be a *very* awkward Schnee family dinner where Winter tries to reconcile with her father and introduces the family to her new girlfriend ... Cinder. It does not go well.

KellyBunny

You see nothing. There is absolutely no queer centric arcs. Def don't read into the slow changeover of the writing and story groups

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Yes, this volume has pacing issues. The one thing this show has never had before this volume, so I am not too mad about it, but with all the issues we saw over your last couple of reactions and add in nonsense like Hazel being stabbed through his back and out of his stomach by Weiss ' summon and showing and having no damage is beyond stupidity. They really screwed that scene up...oh and not chasing after Adam. Blake says the 2 of them wouldn't be enough because he would ve able to pick them off, but they were not alone. The faunus that cane to help and all the police in ships. It's absurd that they let him run off....okay...1 more then I will stop...it made zero sense that Raven opened the vault. Salem thinks Vernal was the Spring Maiden and now she is dead. Raven could have just teleported out. Now that she has opened it. Yang got there and convinced her to let her take it. Yang should have just had her seal it back in the vault.... I am done with the criticism...until v7

Martin E Melcher

Excited for mosco to finally get to some of my favorite Grimm. Shes gon a hate them entierly

SportySpice

“The one thing this show has never had before this volume.” Uhhh, Volume 2 is a pacing mess. It’s a bunch of barely strung together fight scenes, gets caught up in distractions that weren’t originally plotted (the Vytal dance) and completely runs out of runway in a very underwhelming finale due to said detours. It’s very incohesive, and sort of has the opposite problem as V5: great fights, and only a few good character moments (Burning the Candle, Mountain Glenn) to balance it, while V5 has a lot of great character moments, but only a few good fights to balance it out. But they have the same issues of pacing and running out of time/budget. V2 just has nostalgia goggles, but if it was judged on the same grading curve as V5, it would rightfully be at the bottom with it.

Arashi

Summer as the Spring Maiden? Interesting but no. Leo had her at Haven, then she ran. Summer was a Beacon graduate and stayed in Vale/Patch even after Raven left to go back to her tribe. The timeframe is not said, but I think the Spring maiden student ran away eight to twelve years ago at least in order to pass the power to Raven (Raven still had to be counted as a 'young woman' when Glynda doesn't so probably under 30) Adam is.... an issue yes, but on the scale of 'waking up late' to 'planet explodes'.... Adam and his edgelord 'revolutionary' self are pretty low. He's still acting as those the status quo from Volume 3 is in place, Blake may not have 'grown stronger' but she has grown and the status is not quo. He's going to need to (try and) adapt. Yeah volume 5 is.... weak in a lot of areas. Non-action, story wise it's pretty solid, but the most of the 'action' in the volume was of noticeably lower quality then prior volumes. The inside of the vault is like Aladdin's lamp, it's quite the aesthetic that I'm sure is only for this scene. Volume 6 /dose/ make up for a whole lot. I am absolutely looking forward to how you deal with the first major reveal.

Curtis Murphy

While you're right about the fights this volume and the pacing, I think some of the problems you had with characters (Adam, Ruby not going to confront Cinder) are more of you misunderstanding what was going on or the characters. IMO anyway. The reason there weren't that many White Fang members is because this was supposed to be a stealth operation to take down the tower and the academy

Geass

The maidens all have the same powers. Cinder's personal preference is fire, but she used ice to freeze Raven when they came in, and Raven did the same to her. The only difference between the maidens is which vault they open. Even the color of their magic is dependent on who the current holder is. That is also why Salem needs the maidens, to open the vaults. Now that the Spring vault is open, she doesn't need the Spring Maiden anymore. I assume she would like to have such a power house in her pocket, but she doesn't need her. This isn't going to come up again, so I will say it now. The previous Spring Maiden was the previous Vernal. From what I've gathered, the Vernal we knew took the name when she became the decoy Spring Maiden.

Suplee215

Just want tonsay I love this volume, know its unpopular. I think it works better as a binge with v4 and 5 right together. Its a connected story there and extremely thematic. It deconstructs and then reconstruct team RWBY so well. I also really love how the White Fang plot was handled. Adam is just a toxic cult leader who early on aas seen as this unstoppable force but that was just due to everything around him. And the way tontake away his advantage was through the faunus standing up and not letting him be the only faunus making a stand. And it really pays off the attempt at a non violent solution to a realistic standard. Haven was supposed to be child's play compared to Beacon. Lionheart sent all the students and teachers away. The majority of its defenses were gone, the hunters Qrow would rely on in the city were gone and I assume if they weren't that list will be the ones putting up the most fight.

EmberPanther

Aura protects from damage, not from knockback, so Blake punching Adam and knocking him over is entirely plausible. While Hazel’s motivations are rather disappointing, I feel that if you pause and think about it not from a writing standpoint but from an emotional standpoint, you can kind of see why he is so furious with Ozpin. This Volume does have some odd pacing, but one thing I want to point out is that many of the confusing pauses could have been an attempt to emphasize the significance or emotional impact of the scene. When it comes to Adam and the White Fang being rather pathetic at the end of the Volume, there are a couple reasons and facts that could explain it. The reason there are so few White Fang is because this was supposed to be a simple stealth mission, and Adam only needed to have enough people to set the demo charges. The reason Adam seems so pathetic is something that many people have been understandably confused by, which is to show that while he is a good fighter, he is primarily an abusive and slimy man who only beat Blake and Yang because he essentially ambushed them in Volume 3. This is not meant to minimize the damage he has done, or to trivialize Yang and Blake’s pain, rather it is done to show that while he is a threat, he isn’t the nightmare monster that has haunted them for so long.

Mare

Yeah unfortunately we can credit Gray Haddock, former head of Rooster Teeth’s animation department, channeling RWBY’s Volume 5 funds to his pet project called GenLock. He ended up stepping down from his position and finally leaving altogether months later.

Ann_Temki

“Where did that Ruby go?!” Into Gen:LOCK’s budget💀

Curtis Murphy

I honestly love Hazel's motivations. He's so blinded by grief and rage that he can't se what a hypocrite he is.

Vince

…….WHY am I being clocked in cold blood??? I just wanted to enjoy a RWBY reaction *gay tears*

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Monty passed between volumes 2 and 3. I believe he did all the fight scenes for v3 before he passed. You missed som nonsense like we see gere at the end of this volume that makes you say wtf. When Ruby sees Emerald right before Penny fights Pyrrha , she goes through a maintenance door instead of just heading to Emerald. That made no sense. Add in that she runs into Mercury. What the hell is he doing there? How did he get there? That is the ladt place he should be. He is supposed to be laying low so no one sees him, yet after leaving the arena he somehow ends back there. Aside for that, when he shoots Ruby's scroll out of her hands why doesn't she just turn around and go out the door that she walked into ? This show is still one of my favorites, and maybe they couldn't get from point A to point B without doing some things that make no sense because of time. Most shows like this would not get done year after year like they were able to do for the first 7 or 8 years. It's just that there is a bit too much at the end of v5. Volume 6 is great. I hope you enjoy it.

Symbolic Remnant

17:00 So you notice here that Ruby took one look at Blake and Yang staring at each other, and immediately sends Yang away, into a pit containing a fiery devil woman no less. *takes drag off cigarette and smirks knowingly “…In the business, we call this foreshadowing.”

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

We knew that the Spring Maiden was with Leo and Qrow at some point and ran away. We were to assume that Vernal was that person. Anyway, I am glad you are starting to see what a bad person Raven is. She probably has killed more than Cinder. Maybe not but it's probably close

EmberPanther

This is one of the few times that I will say that one of the RWBY songs is essential, and that is “All That Matters” from the Volume 5 soundtrack. The lyrics we hear in the background of this episode are: “You’re lost, you’re found, you’re hard to pin down, I never know if you’ll come through, Then you appear, together we’re here, And that’s all that matters, somehow.” The song goes into detail about all of Yang’s uncertainties and feelings about Blake coming back, and I feel like unless you listen to it you won’t understand Yang’s emotional journey quite as well as is ideal. Also, the big reason that Raven backed off and let Yang take the relic is because Salem’s goal is to gather the relics, and with the Vault of the Spring Maiden being open, Raven is no longer an important factor in achieving that goal. With the end credit scene, many people have pointed out that Tai is the only person we know of that Raven could portal to who wasn’t actively at Haven. I personally feel like the fact she seemed to make herself more apparent is a point in the direction of her actually wanting to interact with him, but there has been a huge amount of discussion around this point.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Another first. Thanks for picking up that Yang(no more lies and half truths) keeps her mother's secret to herself. Protecting her mom or not. She is a huge hypocrite for keeping something that important from everyone

Curtis Murphy

I say this as I always say this when it comes up. What proof do we have that she never tells anyone?

LucidDreamWolf88

Ok so has she not read any of the comments bout why the fight scenes are weird this volume?

Sam

Ya know I really don't think Monty's death is the root cause to the lackluster fight scene. More I think it has to do with Gray siphoning away the budget that was set aside for this volume to GenLock and other shows he was more interested in, Was a real unfortunate situation at the time

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Raven most likely went to Ty because that might be the only person she could portal to.

Mare

We don’t even know if she didn’t tell them anything or not. That’s just an assumption that some fans have made but if anyone is familiar with RWBY and Rooster Teeth’s lack of budget, we have literally seen some events happen off-screen. If it was an actual issue it would have been brought up already. And if the Epilogue is any indication….then there’s more going on than you think l. But as usual Yang is perhaps the most polarizing character…and Monty already foreshadowed it with her Yellow Trailer quote. “Scathing eyes ask that we be symmetrical, one sided and easily processed. Yet every misshapen spark's unseen beauty is greater than its would be judgement." It’s as if Monty already knew media illiterate fans wouldn’t understand her and her motivations. The quote above indicates that the “Scathing” part of the fandom would only see her and read her at surface level and not understand what makes her tick.

The Laughing Man

I've said this many times before and I'll keep saying it. Fuck Raven, she is a horrible person and a dead beat mother who ditched her family to go play bandit leader. I truly do not care about what she saw or what she's experienced before, that didn't stop her from leading a bandit tribe to go raid villages and kill innocent people.

Suplee215

I also think there is some things left unsaid. He knows enough Ozpin to know the reincarnation cycle and stuff. It isnt completely crazy to view Ozpin as an Illuminati type figure who been shaping history for all time. And he created the academies. So now you got an immortal being with untold political power training kids to fight in a shadow war they dont even fully know about. A lot of that goes unspoken, but i dont think its an inaccurate summery of Hazel's view. He just expresses it as "you got my sister killed" which seems petty.

Jason S

25:15 The reason Yang was going to that bar in the first place was to gather information to find Raven. So Raven being there, and knowing what Yang was doing, but not intervening in any way shows the type of person Raven is.

BrightHeart

Yeah, from our knowledge she only has a few portals, Vernal (dead), Qrow and Yang (Right there in Mistral) and thus leaving Tai the only portal left that wouldn't be on haven's grounds.

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

End of Chapter 13 be like: ♪Have you ever really wanted to be A total rebel flipping tables on the enemy? Did you ever try to further improve How fast you punch people through the roof? Oh, Was there ever any certain time When you thought brute force and style combine well? I guess now's time to shine, 'Cause finally she's here, here comes Yang!♫

SportySpice

The knowledge of who the Spring Maiden is also completely inconsequential at this point. The vault was unlocked and the relic is outside the vault. It literally has zero ramifications on the other characters with those facts. They are taking the lamp to Atlas at Oz’s instruction. And even if they knew it was Raven, they can’t find her to get her to seal it back anyway. It’s genuinely not important to anyone but Yang and Cinder, so I never understood why the fandom got wound up about it. And if she is keeping the secret, isnt the thematic punch going to be about Yang’s loyalty to her family, rather than some gotcha! about hypocrisy? Like even if it is a secret, the narrative payoff isn’t going to be some callout post, but to reinforce Yang’s mommy issues and love for her family, even when they don’t deserve it.

ELS_Art

Ruby was being a leader and trusting her sister to deal with Raven. Also the animators that worked on the Raven ca cinder fight scene worked extremely hard on it and for you to dismiss their work is extremely disheartening.

Wilhelm Hedin

I love the faunus defeating Adam easily. It shows their power.

Suplee215

This was filmed when she was back in Scottland. Probably a few weeks ago. She hasnt had any reactions since comments were made on last week's episodes, maybe even the ones before that.

Suplee215

Before the battle of beacon it probably wasnt even close. For at least 15 years (assuming she left when Yang was 2, it was probably earlier) Raven was woth the bandits. Led them for most of that time. All thoae villages we saw destroyed in v4 were her victims. Cinder killed people, but she wasn't actively destroying villages. Salem was operating in the shadows at that time and any murders she did do would he on smaller scales. Battle of beacon alone could easily catch her up though.

Vex Valor

I do like that it was the faunus that took down the White Fang. Raven is such a complicated character.

CB Jones

There's no evidence she never told anyone and one piece that she may have. In RWBY Beyond Sun and Neptune identify Raven as the Sprong Maiden when they talk about her meeting with Winter and another woman. So either that's being broadcast around Vacuo or they found out from Yang via Nora and Ren. Purely speculative but RWBY does like to convey information around the main cast offscreen (eg. Jaune knowing that Raven is Yang's mom this volume without ever being told). I would argue though that even if Yang did withold it, it wasn't important information. Haven's vault was open and the Relic in their hands, the Spring Maiden's only importance now was in her powers and they had no way of getting Raven to help them meaning those powers were out of reach anyway. Whether Yang told them or not it wouldn't actually change anything, their mission now is to get the Lamp to Atlas and the Spring Maiden is irrelevant to that.

Moonas

Hazel’s motivations are rather disappointing? Ok so if your sister would die in school bc teacher gave students dangerous chemicals to do experiments, u will blame school/teacher or your sister? It's valid, he wasn't there - only information he have is that Oz send her on training and she died. "Did she know?" - valid BUT if teacher said "this chemicals are dangerous so be careful" - is that enough to forgive them? She was a child, she was at school and should be protected.

Samantha

Excited to see you finally react to the Volume 5 finale. I will say I think you put a little too much expectation on how this finale went. Remember, Weiss hadn't really properly battled anything(aside from the lancers) for the whole year apart, Yang was merely training at home, and while yes we didn't see much of Ruby's badass fighting, we got to see her leadership really shine in moments(also sure it was lackluster, but the moment between her and Mercury was just to showcase her progress). I also believe they made Adam that easy to beat to show how much of a child he actually is, and yes, Monty's death did have an impact on the combat choreography. Anyway, just some insights. Love your reactions(sorry for the paragraph)

man-of-bvz1n3ss

The thing about Adam is that ultimately he is a fundamentally UNimpressive character. He thinks he's a big deal with his OP Semblance, but ultimately, he's just a spiteful boy who's lashing out at everything he perceives as having ever hurt him. You're meant to seem to take him I really do love that moment of Yang detaching her arm to continue pressing onward, it shows how she's not as short-tempered anymore and can think things through. She is probably the strongest member of the heroes. Ruby's Silver Eyes give her an edge against Cinder, but if Yang can get in a sneak attack she can do some serious damage, even against Maidens. It is a bit weird that nobody else tries to go down, though, but there's some logic to it. The confrontation between Raven and Yang is seriously epic. I love how Yang just tears through Raven's excuses for why she does what she does. And I'll just say that Raven and Summer's relationship isn't unexplored later in the show... Losing Monty wasn't the biggest issue, they had some pretty good fights in V4. The problem with V5 was that Gray Haddock, a higher-up at Rooster Teeth, was siphoning a lot of other show's budgets into his own show, gen:LOCK.

Moonas

RWBY songs are essential, they telling the stories they didn't put in volumes Red like Roses 2 - is so good to understand Ruby and what is going on with her all volumes - 9 mostly. Sacrifice- for Raven to Oz and why she hate him so much. Mirror, Mirror - for early Wise Armed and Ready - for Yang and what is her motive right now One Thing - for Neo and her feelings Lionize - to go into Adam's head Bad Luck Charm - How Qrow see himself This Life is Mine - How Wise mind work Path to isolation - Why she become person from Mirror, Mirror Hero - How Ironwood see the world/situation and himself Chatterbox - What Neo experience inside her in V9 Divide - How Salem see Oz's actions etc - I could remember more but this is A LOT of "hidden" lore.

CB Jones

While the "big swords" moment was goofy, I do think it's perfectly in character for two women so concerned with not just hoarding power, but also maintaining and presenting the appearance of power. They're dramatic and petty and they've been metaphorically measuring "swords" since the moment they met. So I think there are a couple of reason's why Raven cedes the Relic to Yang. The first is what we're given upfront, Raven is at her core ruled by fear. She just too afraid of being the center of Salem's attention even if it puts people she cares about in the line of fire instead. We just witnessed it in action with Vernal, killed because Raven used her as a decoy. The second one I'd argue is that she can't bring herself to fight Yang. Back in the camp, after Yang berates and undermines her in front of her tribe, she orders her minions to throw Yang out instead of doing it herself. And then once Weiss joins the fray, escalating the fight to a point she'd have to intervene, she suddenly changes her tune and calls for peace. Raven dodges Yang in the Atrium fight and despite the fact she could've easily pushed past Yang and taken the Relic she doesn't. The episode Raven's semblance is revealed is the same one Ren comments that semblances are usually tied to personality. Raven forms deep bonds, strong enough to allow her to instantly be by the side of those she chooses to form them with. And as much as she tries to pretend otherwise the feelings that formed those bonds persist. Yang's dismantling of Raven might be the best fight of the Volume, and not just because of the state draining the budget and staff left the action setpieces in. Yang breaks down the illusion of strength Raven has spent years hiding behind and calls her out for her own cowardice. It's a triumph of Yang's perception, empathy and intelligence and demonstrates why Blake sees her as the personification of strength. All Raven has left is force, and she can't bring herself to use it.

LucidDreamWolf88

Ooh okay, thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it

Suplee215

The major difference here is the relatively small risk in school usually. This is like going to a military academy. She signed up for it. That said, you can certainly claim the military uses propaganda and exploitive recruitment strageties to get people to join. But Hazel is literally fighting against children because his sister died as a child. On its service that seems hard to comprehend.

EmberPanther

I realize that I phrased my point wrong. I am not saying that I see his motives as disappointing, I actually quite like them and enjoy that he seems to be a “good man” who is on Salem’s side. My intent was to say that while Mosco seemed disappointed at the “simple” backstory from a storytelling perspective, looking at it from an emotional perspective and thinking about his view of the situation is both logical and very interesting. I agree that any child at a school should be protected, and even accidents shouldn’t excuse harm to students. The issue is, the only info we have is from either context, Ozpin (while trying to rationalize to Oscar), and an enraged Hazel. Here is the information we do have: First, she was old enough to attend a huntsman academy, which at Beacon is canonically between 17-18, with a few exceptions such as Ruby. It would make sense if a network of connected schools (such as the Huntsmen Academies) have similar policies. Due to us not knowing anything about the legal ages in Remnant, we are unfortunately unable to know whether she was a child or a young adult. Second, according to Ozpin (a questionable source of info, but he is our only source outside of an understandably furious Hazel) she died during a training mission. The struggle with this is that she chose to do something inherently dangerous by entering the academy, and the mission was likely either more dangerous then expected or it was a higher risk mission while she was in a later year. Three, Hazel had warned her to not go since it was dangerous, but as Oscar said, she made a choice to try and help others before herself.

RiekerVerse

exactly this, hes been riding on the coattails of threats and charisma for long enough that both are running out, he's a pathetic man who doesnt actually have the strength or power to back up his threats. Without an army behind him, he is weak, and this volume reminded us well that weak men are often utterly unimpressive when faced with any sort of real challenge

man-of-bvz1n3ss

I mean, they don't really do much, they just kinda stand there.

Fred Smith

For volume 5 I just took the fight we see as non-literal. The blocking was obviously terrible, but having a set piece fight with 8 heroes and 4 villains would have taken as much of the budget as the rest of the season. Reality ensues.

Andrew Hart

She has recorded up to Vol 6 Chapter 3 according to her Trello page (the link for which is in the description beneath this video) so whilst she may have read the comments on last weeks reaction and this, she probably won’t reference or acknowledge them until she records her Vol 6 chapter 4 reaction, if she does reference them at all

RiekerVerse

yeah thats part of what i like about what they did with Raven, this power to be anywhere at the drop of the hat, but not the temperament to create the bonds necessary to actually make use of it. Its why i still believe she really loved Vernal, whether that was in a parental way or a romantic way we may never know, but love was absolutely there, and more than just "you are my tribe, you are my family, and i love you" or she would have had someone else at home she could have gone to, Vernal was truly special to her

Angelus Lupus

~44 minutes in and it seems that whatever Mosco is doing for noise (hiss, etc) cancelling on the recording is muting the creepy sounds of the Seer?.... unless my sound settings are wrong

Andrew Hart

I agree, I remember watching Volume 5 week to week and finding it rough, to say the least. And the thing is, we didn’t know if volume 6 would be any better at the time. At least Mosco has the luxury of knowing that the show picks up again when watching these chapters

Shard

The heroes and villains clashing directly and the menagerie militia confronting the white fang, the securing of the bombs, And Kali has the eminently sensible approach of “I’m calling the cops”

Andrew Hart

Firstly, I must say that one thing I appreciate about your reactions is how you voice the legitimate criticisms that you have. I feel like you don’t let them detract from your love of the show, which is refreshing. Secondly, congratulations, you made it through volume 5! In all seriousness though, when you can binge this volume, it isn’t too bad. For me, what makes it so tough to watch is that, by this point, the show had been on an upward trajectory in terms of overall quality. Indeed the first half of this volume is very strong and enjoyable and lays important ground work for bigger payoffs to come. But from chapter 8 onwards the pacing and choreography falls off, (thanks of course to the numerous production issues behind the scenes that we all know about.) With volumes 1 and 2 you could forgive the problems they had because the show was still finding it’s feet, but with volume 5, it’s harder to forgive. It could and should have been executed so much better than it was. For me Volume 5 feels like the last leg runner of a relay race, receiving the baton in first and then tripping over their own shoelaces, stumbling along the last 100 meters before finally face planting over the finish line in last place. Thankfully volume 6 and onwards is incredible and I’m glad that we can tell people that now when they’re struggling with volume 5 because, back then, we didn’t know if volume 6 would be any better. Thank goodness it was.

Ben Disney

Yeah, this finale is a bit rough. There were a lot of behind-the-scenes issues, but I think they also just bit off a bit more than they could chew with so much colliding at once. Maybe if they'd managed to split up the finale fights a bit more, rather than have them all in one room? I admire the ambition, but having a believable fight with that many characters at once, with stuff happening OUTSIDE as well, seems a little doomed to awkwardness form the get-go. And yeah, Adam's performance here is kinda sad, he just kinda...crumbles in terms of intimidation, which I've always found disappointing given how much harm he's done to two of our main girls. And Hazel's motive is lame, I agree. They try and fix it in later volumes, but it still kinda sucks, and I stand by that. But don't worry, the quality goes up even further in the next couple volumes, leaving this just a sort of unfortunate lapse. And the fights get a lot better.

Cinder's Apologist

I won't say anything about fight issues and pacing because clearly everyone else has weighed in on those things. I for one still enjoy v5 and don't get too hung up on those things, even if they are more obvious with hindsight. That being said... I'll say it again: if your favorite RWBY character is not suffering or has not suffered, then you need a new favorite, because suffering is essential to development XD Adam is a small man, so to speak. Volume 6 will get more into that. I can't say more, but trust me, you should enjoy that resolution of his little villain run. re: Maiden powers... it's personal preference. nothing to do with the seasons, just a matter of what the Maiden chooses to do with her power. YAY YOU NOTICED THE RAVEN CAMEO IN THE YELLOW TRAILER!! likewise, it took me forever to realize that was a thing and WHY it was a thing. also for fun, take a look at v3c3 when Qrow and Winter start having their verbal spar, and you'll see a raven watching from afar ;) re: the Faunus militia taking down the White Fang... probably just lack of budget to have a fuck ton of WF goons or a huge fight sequence. also yes, it does go "too well" - let them have this one. that's all I will say. think back to v4 Raven... "The weak die, the strong live. Those are the rules." Raven's life among bandits is survival of the fittest, so what she did to Spring simply follows that harsh mentality. Yang's little talk with Raven remains one of the best character moments in the show imo. yes, it is a bit disappointing to find out that Raven is a coward, but it also goes to show how Yang is like her mother and YET! she's also not. both are strong, both prize a brute force approach in fighting, but Yang is the one who won't run. Yang is the one who will stand and fight, even when she knows she shouldn't. (I also suspect there could be more as to why Raven runs like she does, and can safely say that hasn't been confirmed yet) also yeah, Yang is kinda protecting her mom by not divulging what she learned. along with just not wanting to get into ALL THAT in the moment cuz everybody is tired as fuck lol re: post credit scene... I've always assumed it's just Raven doing her usual "keeping an eye on family but on her terms: from a distance." well, you made it through volume 5! on to volume 6! trust me, you will enjoy it very much.

Cinder's Apologist

what I find amusing personally is that I never really was all that bothered by the fights or pacing or whatnot until I started listening to what others had to say about v5 lol. I can see those flaws now and I get it, but for me it's more about seeing the plot unfold into bigger and bigger stakes so... to each their own.

Cinder's Apologist

very well said! I hadn't considered the parts about Raven avoiding having to fight Yang more than once being indicative of how hollow that strength facade is, but I love it (and makes me love them both even more). and great way to tie back to Blake's remark about Yang being the personification of strength in the same volume where she deconstructs that image of Raven.

Cinder's Apologist

yep yep. I hope v6 will help her see that more clearly. ngl hearing that reaction gave me flashbacks to the things I've heard about people calling Adam "wasted potential"... I was not around in those days but I know enough to know how people really misread what his deal was. anyway, he got exactly what he deserved at Haven and I have no problem with how it was handled XD

BGTitan

That's funny because 5 was my favorite while it was airing while 4 is still my least favorite volume of the show.

CB Jones

Gold from the Vol 1 soundtrack has always been one of my favourites for fleshing out Yang's bond with Ruby and her struggle to give Ruby a stable childhood after Summer died.

Dreanner95

I actually love what they did with Adam. They didn't go the clichee route with him. Instead he is someone who is big and indimetating...when things go his way. Once something goes wrong, he crumbles.

Lavender Onyxheart

Not me practically screaming at my phone watching this every time Mosco says she's "missing Monty's touch" on the fight scenes when Monty passed during vol 3s production, none of vol 5 is any animator's fault, you can lay the blame directly at Gray Haddock's feet for siphoning off funding for RWBY to other projects, without funding you can't pay for the animation you want, you have to cut corners, they did what they could with what funding was available to them; they didn't have Monty in vol 4 either and you don't nearly see the complaints in vol 4 as you do with vol 5, the entire issue with vol 5 was funding, plain and simple

RyeBread

I think now might be a good time to air out a theory I have regarding raven. I feel like she might be on track to have a sort of ‘Snape’ style of arc and back ground, and that everything she’s done has actually been for a deeper reason. Everytime we see her talking to people she seems to be putting on a front in my opinion, like it’s all a big performance, but when she’s alone or like with her convo with Yang in the final on this volume it’s like her mask slips and we get to see a glimpse of the real Raven. I like the idea that Raven might either have, or have at least used the crown of choice at some point, catching a glimpse of the future regarding Salem around the time she was pregnant with Yang which resulted in her abandoning Yang and Tai. I just think she’s a very interesting character since if you think about it, without Raven we wouldn’t have a show, since if she haven’t have abandoned Yang and Tai then Tai might not have gotten with summer and Ruby wouldn’t have been born.

Jyoster

Many people already mentioned about the budget issue, so no need to repeat it. And yeah, while the overall pacing left much to be desired, and lead to some questionable decisions, Volume 5 is a pivotal point for the series. Not only introducing plot points which go to further expand the narrative, but having some nice character moments.

Sarah Stephens

Her going to dad was probably also the only link portal she had left considering her others are yang, qrow, and vernal who were all already there.

Diesel Marcus

Suffering is not essential to character development. Trauma is not a desirable character trait. It's tragic that so many shows feel like that is the only way to further a character's arc. How about learning new skills, mastering techniques, making new friends, etc. I know some shows do it better than others but that mentality is really toxic. Not to say it's your fault. It is really pervasive in media nowadays.

Cinder's Apologist

you're right; that's on me for phrasing it poorly. my intention was merely to point out how RWBY is shaped in such a manner that nearly every significant character ends up suffering or dealing with trauma to some degree. yes, it's not desirable and often is painful to watch. but unfortunately, the world of Remnant is one where such pain is all too common, whether the story dictates it or it's simply an outcome of living in such an unforgiving world.

Cinder's Apologist

I agree. I strongly suspect there's more to Raven than we're shown in v5 (and overall) which tracks given the way that RWBY consistently gives us those initial impressions only to reveal they are facades.

Connor Hines

Which was actually a pretty good show, shame it only had one season

Ann_Temki

Truly a shame😔

Suplee215

I really do like the constructed criticism here. I do wonder how you'll feel about the season on a rewatch, especially after finishing the current episodes. I personally really enjoy the White Fang elements here and how that conflict ends. Adam was sold as very impressive, but when you think about the battle of beacon it was so one sided because of Cinder and Salem. They had the element of surprise. They had spies. They took over a large portion of the defense system and used it against them with the robot hacking. Blake didnt know adam will be there. Here they knew of the attack, had faunus ready to stand up to white fang who were not as dedicated as Adam was and everyone was more prepared. Adam is the type of person that if he doesnt have the angry mob at his back, he loses his power. He goes from cult leader to angry incel real quick.

Raiku Yuri

The different maidens don't have different magic, the fall maiden before cinder used ice, wind, fire and lightning in her fight against cinder. I think cinder just prefers fire.

Kadaver

The battle for Haven was a bit under cooked but I do enjoy V5 for the story elements. Also yang beating up those bandits near the beginning.

Migli

yeah it really is a shame because id hate to think how those type of comments make the animators feel its not constructive at all and only puts them down compairing them to a dead man idk it feels like a low blow especially when he had been dead since after volume 2 yet volumes 3 or 4 never received this same criticism

Migli

its honestly really upsetting seeing you blame every issue you have with this volume on montys death when he had been dead for two volumes already i know you mean no harm but it's hard to watch and it feels incredibly disrespectful to the animators who dedicated themselves to continue montys work to constantly blame the short comings on montys absence without considering the possibilities of actual issues with production outside of their control which as many people have stated on multiple reactions this volume basically got the budget halved and production shafted in order to work on a series called gen:lock sure I won't deny that montys work was outstanding and one of a kind but you had none of these complaints for volume 3 or 4 both animated after monty passed away so using montys absence as a scapegoat or thinking "well this must be because of montys death" just feels disrespectful imo

Migli

dont get me wrong your criticism for this volume is valid i totally agree with the pacing of the fights being off but it has nothing to do with monty and everything to do with gen:lock i suppose I just wish you werent so quick to bring up monty for these issues when in reality these were things entirely out of the control of the people animating they did the best with what they were given

Migli

yeah all the maidens can use all elemental magic cinder just prefers fire which makes sense considering her semblance is also related to heat and in the fight Raven used mostly icy related things which creates a visual contrast between the two im kinda disappointed she had so much criticism for the raven vs cinder fight its one of my favourites visually i thought the swords were cool 😭🥹

Dayash

Agreed! yes there were issues but please lets not blame it on his passing it's not only inaccurate but like you said disrespectful to the people who put their hard work into the show, the same people who did volume 3 and 4 like you said

Luminaxtea

People who love complaining and hating on this show for fun use Monty's name and death as their go-to for justifying their hate and nitpicking. Seeing it thrown around so casually like this again just triggered all my bad memories of the disingenuous discourse and bad faith hot takes that surrounds this show by people that just don't get it.

RyokoTheBeast

Big swords are cool. That's why I like the anime/manga Claymore. 😎👍 Good visual attractive fight with a good jam.

Vic Walker

Yeah I don't like that she read and absorbed the most annoying part of people that hate this volume. They oversimplify any issues RWBY had to "RWBY is not the same after Monty's death", it's so infuriating and disrespectful.

Vic Walker

Well, where else Raven could make a portal? Yang is right by her side, Qrow is in the upper floor, only Tai was far enough for her to escape. But she wasn't going there to talk with him or anything else, just using him to go as far away as she could. Also sorry but you have too much credit to Raven lol, I know she is interesting and layered character, with one of the coolest designs, but she deep down is just very selfish and deeply afraid of Salem. As Yang said, she would put everyone in front of her as a shield if she can, and so she left her own daughter take the relic and at the same time take the gigantic target on her from Salem. Salem won't necessarily waste energy specifically to kill Raven, sure, she will try to kill her if the opportunity shows up, but Salem's priority number one is the relics, not petty revenge as Cinder pursue.

Vic Walker

Big swords are very aesthetic, but it's just too funny to take it seriously in a fight. Especially those, it's just way too long that makes it impractical to fight that well. No wonder they went to a very anime-ish fight style.

Vic Walker

I did a big marathon to watch RWBY with some people this year, we would watch a whole volume from start to end, with no stops. Every weekend, one volume per day per week. And indeed it's much better to watch this volume all at once, it feels a little less frustrating about the fights. All volumes actually are good to watch all chapters in one go. And some volumes are better being rewatched (one specific it's basically mandatory to rewatch to really appreciate it, because there is A LOT of hidden stuff in plain sight, that you can only connect the dots on rewatch).

Vic Walker

They are all relatives of the members of the white fang. That's pretty damn good to bring down their morale to fight back.

Joey Visser

Agreed It kinda feels disrespectful towards Monty's Legacy as well

John Hannon

This episode contains one of my favorite Nora lines. "I don't need him to hurt, I just need him to GO DOWN!"

Lisi Stoire

I really advice you to be careful with your expectations (not only when you're watching RWBY, with everything else as well). It's not to say that you can't criticize the execution of a scene or general elements that you see are lacking (I do have my own strong opinions about the series as well). But when you put your mind to expect specific stuff, the risk of you being disappointed will only increase. You're not in the mind of the writers and even if your theories and ideas might be really great, they don't necessarily have the same objectives or priorities that you do (not to mention the inevitable restrictions about budget and delays that they have to face as well and force them to make hard decisions).

Migli

We still don't know for sure that Raven didn't talk to Tai, or what happened after she left

Luminaxtea

I think that's what trips people up the hardest when it comes to RWBY and its storytelling: expectations. RWBY is not typical or uniform in its storytelling by any means as it's constantly subverting tropes and condensing plots as coherently as possible to make the best use of its shorter than average runtimes and limited resources, something they actually do very well. People are just so used to Hero = Right / Morally correct and Protagonists Never Lie/Cheat/Steal/ect in media that they blow a gasket and cannot fathom when RWBY does something to imply non-villain characters are doing otherwise. The narrative becomes very clear over time that you can't always take the characters at face value or for their word, hero or villain. Sometimes they're biased, or have incomplete information filled in with speculation, or just a one-sided perspective. You can have your headcanons and expectations, sure, but its not right to blame the show when they don't come to pass, especially with something so unique and removed from the status quo like RWBY. It's also very important to remember that even up to Volume 9 (and unless Viz changes this with Volume 10) RWBY is still a relatively small indie project with much a smaller number of animators, resources, and overall budget than what's typical in the industry.

B Dawn

Yeah! Budget cuts hurt this show so much:( not only here but also in volume 9 where they had to cut 2 fully voiced-over episodes and such… it is just a miracle that the show managed to survive.

Yulii Aladzhov

Aura Amplification is WAY better than healing in 99% of situations. I'm sorry but anyone that saw how Orihime's powers worked and thought that was just simple healing WAS NOT PAYING attention. Her powers were very obviously some kind of reversal - even her invocation for them suggested it. And I say this as someone that dropped the show twice - once after the first 80ish episodes and again after about 150ish. As for Bleach not doing anything with that power. Color me completely unsurprised that the show that erases character development at the start of each new arc never followed through on a novel idea. Adam is personification of blind vengeance and toxic masculinity. He is being portrayed exactly as indented. Despite what people that could never let of of their infatuation with his design will claim to the contrary. Aura does not magically make it so you don't take any damage. It mitigates it. It can block some of it. But also Aura has to be engaged to do anything and people in the mental state Adam is shown in are not known for having control of themselves. You've made a number of assumptions throughout this volume and learning they are wrong does not seem to have gotten you to slow down on it and think things through more. I actually kind of glad I'm watching these on a free trial. Because if I had paid for this I would feel like I wasted my money. The last three reactions especially have been pretty sub par. I don't expect you'll read this or learn anything from it - you've given no indication that you actually read ANY of the comments. Tangent aside Weiss can summon ANY Grimm she has killed. She just has to think of it first. Again with the assumptions. WHY? Why do you think it should be Ruby. Unlike Cinder, Ruby is not chasing after a grudge fight. Yang is the most competent solo fighter that is NOT currently engaged in a fight they can't ditch. That's why Yang is going down there. And for all her faults Raven is ALSO down there. Raven would do it out of self interest but she would work with Yang against Ciner if necessary. And at 18 minutes in I am DONE. You did not just seriously say that. Sorry but you need a brain scan if you seriously said that. I've already canceled my trial. I'm also unsubbing on YT and once again wishing with everything I am they would fucking let me BLOCK people.

Robert Presley

Aura doesn't prevent you from being knocked down lol.

Hotaru Tomoe

There’s also the concept of the “idiot ball”. Sometimes, you just have to make characters act a bit dumb for the plot to work. Could they have done better with the fight scenes? Yeah. But if everyone was kicking maximum ass, they wouldn’t have gotten the Relic, or the bad guys would have to have seemed more powerful than they are.

lightanddarklove

Watching this season’s reaction and now I’m waiting for Elijah to get to the scene in Vol 9 with the parallel to one of these scenes makes me so excited. I hope that eventually we will get another “No, but I’m gonna do it anyway,” moment beyond that. I have my theories but I don’t want to spoil anything yet. I can understand the criticism on pacing in this volume but Yang has some of my favorite moments in this season including her conversation with Raven. Her breakdown afterwards always hurts my heart, of seeing Raven abandon her once again, and since she doesn’t tell anyone about it makes it a burden she has chosen to carry alone. She is one of the emotionally strongest characters in the show, imo.

DominusInFortuna

As for Weiss' different summoning glyphs: Each summon has a different glyph visually. The Arma Gigas, the Boarbatusk and the Queen Lancer can be foreseen if you pay attention to the Glyph Weiss is shwon to be using while summoning. It's a neat little detail.

DominusInFortuna

And... Hold on a moment. We saw Ruby getting knocked wuthout having her Aura broken, we saw Qrow getting flung around by Hazel... BUT AT BLAKE DONKEY-KONG-PUNCHING ADAM TO THE GORUND? That's where you draw the line? As someone else said, Aura doesn't protect oneself form getting knocked out or down. It protects you form blades and bullets penetrating, but it doesn't protect from kinetic impacts.

DominusInFortuna

Last addendum to this: The end-credit-scene.... Raven had four people for her portals. Vernal is dead, Yang and Qrow were at Haven... So, Tai was the only one she could use for a quick escape from the vault.

Vegvisir92

you really can't remember any of the characters can you?

DiamondDawg

I'm happy that she is bringing up the flaws with Vol 5 because yeah the production issues like time constraints especially wasting some good budget on those shorts overall hurt this volume in the pacing, writing and fight scenes. I liked this volume fine on first watch but on rewatch knowing the issues BTS you can see the cracks. This is the worst volume IMO. Bringing Monty's name was a bit much but I'm always glad someone who loves a show can acknowledge when the show screws up. That's a true fan.

Christopher Groenewald

I don't believe the maidens have specific elemental powers based on the season they represent. Their powers do appear to be elemental based, but they aren't all limited to a single element. We've seen the fall and spring maidens both use lightning (Amber summoned a storm during her fight with Cinder and Raven did the same thing at her camp. She also used electrical attacks against Cinder during their fights) and we've seen all the known maidens use ice attacks at some point (most famously, the winter maiden summoned a blizzard that destroyed a building, but we've also seen Amber and Raven use ice attacks against Cinder)

Christopher Groenewald

I like to think that the conversation with Yang in the vault showed Raven what she gave up and how much she lost by abandoning Tai and Yang all those years ago, so she's gone back to Tai in an attempt to try and repair their relationship and try and get back some semblance of the life she could have had if she didn't leave. I'm expecting her and Tai to reappear in a later volume, probably not as lovers, but at least as friends who have found some common ground to stand on.
