For as long as I live, I will never hear a more savage burn than “Next to my wife!” Holy Peak, that’s a good one! 👏👏👏

Broody Gaming

It was so cute Mortius during his first reaction also said “by my wife” right before Ody said it and it still makes me smile to think about haha 😂 you and Mortius have the right priorities haha

As said the prophet: "I see you on the brink of death, I see you draw your final breath, I see a man who gets to make it home alive, but it's no longer you" And the choir sings at the end of No Longer You: "Hurt Poseidon"

To be clear, the Greek gods are HEAVILY sanitized (or modernized maybe) compared to ACTUAL Greek Mythology. All the characters are that way, honestly. There's A LOT more rape in the original Odyssey.

I love this saga. Cant explain why, I just do. And seeing Ody beat Poseidon with his own weapon is just so satisfying!

BakaSama

The Greek Gods are by and large just humans with phenomenal power and immortality and their flaws are on an equal scale. There're are some relatively decent ones, but the ones that get the most focus are the ones with the worst bad sides. Anyway, next and final one should be really interesting to see your reaction to. Be prepared for things are only going to get darker before they get better.

As I mentioned before, there are only 4 songs who’s title is the name of a monster. So far we’ve gotten Polyphemus, Scylla, and Charybdis. 👀

Full honesty, Vengeance Saga has to be the weakest and worst of them all. From the music to the changes, it gives me the trope “Worf Had the Flu” vibes in the storytelling and musical composition, as we’ve seen better from previous sagas. So, again, fuck Kalypso. I refuse to see any animatic that isn’t done by Clover for the sole reason that it has one detail others don’t. Odysseus never once faces Kalypso. “Not Sorry for Loving You” might as well be renamed “Gaslighting: the Anthem”. It would have been far more satisfying to have a song where Hermes berates and chides Kalypso for being such a horrible host and that Zeus’ orders are absolute. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is so broken he at first believes he’s being tricked. So yeah, don’t feel sorry for Kalypso. To hell with her. The wind bag, oh man the fucking wind bag. It was just…SO unnecessary, but we’ll touch that in a moment. Then there’s Charybdis. As I said in Thunder Saga, Charybdis and Scylla share a strait and are one of the oldest examples of the phrase “between a rock and a hard place”. Charybdis was an impassible to pass whirlpool that would suck down everything and destroy it. ‘Fighting’ it was an impossibility. Regarding the wind bag. In The Odyssey, it was another sea god, Ino, that helped Odysseus by giving him a shroud that hid him from Poseidon’s vision. I’d had prefer something similar but with the wind bag, things could have been done differently. Then there’s “600 Strikes”, oh man the idea that a mortal could FIGHT and WOUND a god was incomprehensible to the Greeks. It only happened once, and it was by a man so badass that he was only surpassed by Achilles (Diomedes is the dude, look him up, he’s in The Iliad). And picking up a god’s weapon? Easier chances of making a 10 foot hole by kicking the dirt repeatedly. The last saga is my favorite, so I won’t have much to say about it. Probably.

This saga is actually my least favorite but that's not saying much when the whole musical is so dang good. Not Sorry for Loving You: Alright so this.... is a divisive song as you can imagine since Calypso herself is a divisive character. But the way I look at it, is that this is purely from Calypso's POV. This is purely her feelings on the matter. What I do like though is the use of "if you hate me then I'm sorry my loves too much of you" because... wow. She still doesn't quite see what's wrong with this situation. It carries the same tone as "sorry you feel that way". Which I believe is intentional on the writing's part. There's some debate on if Ody's "i love you but not in the way you want me to" was because he genuinely developed some sort of ... idk like... not stockholm syndrome but kind of. Or if he was just saying it so that she'd let him go easier or... idk. I can appreciate Calypso's plight but girl.... Not a song I listen to regularly but Barbara's voice is phenomenal, and I do enjoy the part where the tempo picks up a bit. Dangerous: I think it's illegal for Hermes not to have a bop of a song. Full Speed Ahead - "600 men under my command, with only one goal in mind" "Make it back alive to our homeland" vs Dangerous - "600 deaths under my command, because I had one goal in mind" "..." That silence is deafening. The callback to Keep Your Friends Close makes me wish Aeolus came back!!!! Ahhh!!! I miss that tricky little thing!!! Charybdis: A good transition song. That last bit where his voice gets all hopeful and soft kills me every time because unfortunately.... it's time to- Get In the Water: I think it is also illegal for Poseidon to not sing bangers. One last try of Open Arms and... nope. Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves, I'm afraid. 600 Strike: Something I absolutely love about Duvet’s animatic for this one is that with each stab there’s a flash of someone that Ody blames himself for their death. “How does it feel to be helpless?” The infant. “I watched my friends die in horror!” Polites. “I heard their final moments, calling their captain in vain!” The 557 men. “Look what you turned me into!” The Siren. “All of the pain that I’ve been through!” Eury (backstabbed by the way). They went so hard on this animatic and I thank them for it. “Next to my wife.” Sickest mic drop in this whole show. Damn. Can't believe next week is the last saga! That is crazy man! I'm so looking forward to your reaction!

Phoenix_mercury

my read on ody's ily is that hes ben tortured(mentslly/emotionally at min) for 7 years by her, he doesnt know if she can revoke his ability to leave(we know she cant but poor ody has no fking clue whats happened) so one of the 4 trauma responses, fawn, happens and he blurts out what shes just said she wants(lie to me and say-) before rationalising it in a "not how u think" way before booking it

Chance

Are you on the center epic video from last week? Although I just died around watching it this week. I don't like the guy who does evidence are telemetous. My bad with about his mom, because I am, I am very protective of my mom. I am the youngest and I'm 5.2, but I will cut down A Predator like a what a tree, I don't care, but not you guys, you guys are Elijah and Morgan have hearts of gold and you guys have been getting me through some really hard times lately, just a lot of family stuff going on, hopefully by the holidays. And hopefully my birthday also, if you're filming on January 15th on patreon, I would really appreciate a shout out that's my birthday, but yeah, I love Oliver content and you guys have been really helpful with a lot of the days that I've been having, and I love all of you guys. Welcome to the nerd squad. It's just me. It's me and a bunch of my friends.\n Have

Joy (a.k.a. Gentle Lionheart)

I felt the exact same way at the end of this saga as you, Mosco! The last song was pretty satisfying 😌

Tintros

I really enjoyed this one, it's great to see people enjoying the classics, and the music gives it a thrilling spin that can appeal to an audience that would never read the Epics.

Evil Queen

I’ve enjoyed your reaction to these as someone who read the Iliad and Odyssey in school and studied mythology some in college I enjoyed seeing the honest reaction to the gods and goddesses. I cannot wait for the Ithaca saga reaction!

TheCasualNerd

Yeah the discourse around Calypso can get nasty because people are allergic to nuance and end up fully in sympathy or hate for her. When really its totally fine to feel for her absolutely awful situation and also condemn her actions. Its a shame it gets so toxic all the time

TheCasualNerd

To play sea devil's advocate for Poseidon being a dick, he is an asshole but consider that he has every right to hold a grudge here. Imagine if some guy amd his mates came along and did something to say... Elijah. Not killing her, but doing something that in your culture is even worse than killing her. Among the worst things you can do to a person. Then as they leave the guy boasts about what he did and gives put his name address and employer as a "haha I won what're you gonna do about it." And so you, rightfully, track this ass down and demand an apology. Really you're justified in demanding much more cause again this guy did worse than death things to Elijah. But you demand an apology. And this guy, this absolute bastard, lies to your face saying he took no pleasure in it despite actively gloating about it at the time. No apology, just a blatant lie. Now walking through that scenario, how likely are you to forgive this guy for all of that? Oh and also if you do let him go and he tells anyone about that people all over will think they can get away with shit too. Poseidon IS a dick in mythology. But in this story he's straight up justified in hating Ody. Now murdering the whole crew? Ehhhh a handful of them did directly partake in the maiming, and the rest ate the cyclops' food so like, they're not exactly innocent... but you can argue mass murder was overkill for them. But still, justifiable crashout overall

Speed1247

Nope, he didn't even care about his kid he did that due to his reputation not out of any love. (Plus polythemus is also in the wrong for making a deal and going back on it)

TheCasualNerd

Im inclined to agree, I just wanted to present a case for the other side. I think understanding where both sides are coming from is important even if you still conclude one side is a cunt 😆

Aivy

She is Atlas' daughter, not Cronos'. In none of the alternative parentages given that I can find is she Cronos' child. Where did you get that from?

Rixec2

Watching Odysseus beat the hell out of Poseidon was cathartic after everything he'd been put through. The tragedy of it comes from the fact he had hoped to avoid it. Get in the Water had him appeal one last time. That they both had suffered enough; that they should just forgive and go home. Even with all Odysseus had done, he had hoped he could still try to not be a monster. That forgiveness and kindness could win out. But Poseidon said no. And so, the monster had to come out.

marauderluverz (Luci)

Thank you for this comment because I rarely see people say how people can feel for her situation and agree she did terrible things. Her song got to me because it is a sad song, but at the same time it does stay in my head how she behaved toward Odysseus.

Vic Walker

I think it should've been informed to you that, almost all animatics aren't 100% cannon with the musical itself, and are each artist's interpretation of each song. And since watching the animatics, it's always changing between different artists, it's not going to be a perfect follow-up between songs. Like the Get In The Water one Ody was impaled by the trident, but the other artist for 600 Strike didn't do it that way, he was pushed inside deep waters by Poseidon's Trident but not impaled. Anyway got be a bit flexible with it and not take the visuals as rule.
