Nott’s speech at the end was almost word for word from the campaign and I’m SO glad it was given the justice that it deserved because it was an impactful moment

Christopher Malone

(see the episode descriptions...) You weren't ready, were you Mosco?... don't worry it gets worse from here, welcome to the Mighty Nein's CART FULL OF TRAMA, strap in fokes, its gonna be a bumpy ride

Fred Smith

Caleb saying he 'took his magic' was a lot more figurative in this series than it normally is in fantasy shows, and I found that really interesting.

Suplee215

What was taken from Caleb was the resources and will to continue magic more so than the ability itself. Hes an academic who lost his funding...

Dana L Powers-Green

He also lost his spell books so he is having to relearn the spells he used to know.

Suplee215

RAW yea. I think yhe difference is more that hes no longer has the residum in his arms and that was able to substitute for spell components hes currently looking for in show.

Marceline_mother

We don't mind being in the bad side of Beau, you're so right.

Special K

Trent Ikithon..... what an insufferable satchel of Richards

Suplee215

The fandom/players call him Icky Thong. Should be youtube safe

Chloe McNamara

I'm a fan of the campaign so I already knew Caleb's tradgic backstory, but this was such a viceral and spell binding adaption of it. It's incredible. I am also loving how true to the character moments they are being. So many of the interactions between the Nien are verbatim moments from the campaigne, just often in slightly different contexts. Love your reactions!

Vlee

The campaign's story was amazing. But the adaptation is even better. Loved your reaction, appreciated you calling out the beauty in the tragedy of the transition. Caleb was groomed, undoubtedly, and he broke for it, being put in a sanatorium for who knows how long after he did what he did. And what he did was awful. It was something listening to it in the campaign, but watching it, that silhouette of Frumpkin... Man. Caleb is probably my favorite character.

Suplee215

I think the Mighty Nein is just a more interesting group than Vox Machina on a character level. It also adds in thst Vox Machina began filming almost halfway through their campaign. Geek and sundry was looking for twitch content and Felicia Day asked her friends who played dnd if they wanted to turn it into a actual play stream. The Vox machina campaign begin with the party already together. But also it was Travis, Laura, Ashley and Sam's first ever dnd campaign. Vox Machina follows the traditional high fantasy archetypes pretty well. Mighty Nein is a little more subversive. That is also why a lot of the camapign had to change. C2 is a lot less tightly connected as the players took more time finding missions and figuring out what they wanted to do. Overall this show seems just more streamlined than totally different. For quick example, it took Beau like 10 episodes to begin working for Dairon and trusting her. She more ran away from the Sol for other reasons but the show took what was in middle and end of yhe show and moved it forward and it stil fits in character. And the audience didnt know anything about the war for months. As an adaption im loving it. Although they also did learn how to make an animated show.

Alex Malix

If you need help remembering his name. It sounds like "Icky Thong"

Christopher Malone

So post-reaction follow-up... as someone who watched the campaign and knew this was coming, it was hard to watch. Honestly, when I go back and binge this season, I may skip this episode, not because it's bad, but it's a rough watch... unless they do what I think they will do, but that may not be revealed for a few seasons. Also, kudos to them for keeping Nott's My Boy speech in the show; it was that speech that completely recontextualized Sam's character for me during this run, cause up until this point, Nott was just a drunk goblin girl version of Schanlan. This sold me on her. And lastly, Kudos again to Molly being the damn king he is... LONG MAY HE FUCKING REIGN! And Mosco, you have every RIGHT to be nervous about the finale. I don't know if they will pull the trigger on the E26 plot point (IYKYK) yet, and I kinda hope they save it till next season, but if they don't... yeah, it's gonna be a rough wait for season 2.

CrowOfAFeather

Oh if only Beau hadn't played into Owelia's hands like Caleb warned her about... I know she was told not to trust anyone, but there is a time and place. Clearly Caleb and Owelia weren't on friendly terms and yet Beau just had to shift her focus on Caleb and accuse him on being Owelia's friend etc. Like, Caleb and her fighting, and him torturing her should've been clear signs, but nope. Definitely one of my favourite episodes so far, as bittersweet as that is, but the cut from scene to scene, the voiceacting - holy, Liam's scream as he torches the entire tree? wow... - was phenomenal! And of course Nott being the best just from her speech at the end alone. "He's MY boy." And Caleb calling her his "Guardian Goblin" at the start is just heartwarming. Interesting reaction to Caleb, Astrid, and Eadwulf being together lmao

Rachel Mae

I have watched the campaign and the changes that they've made honestly feel so natural. Not once have I felt like any change was unnecessary or took away from the original story at all. Everything about it has been amazing so far...This is easily going to rot my brain and become my personality for the next six months

Miranda Corvus

Loved the episode but boooy is a therapist about to afford a mercedes

Chet Bliese

Difficult to watch, but cannot look away.

Suplee215

Just to clarify, the Zemni region which includes the farms were allegedly having a rebellion. Basically a rebellion of farmers and stuff. Which could be a very serious issue. The government never likes it when their food supply starts wanting more or whatever. Not confirming that is or is not the truth. Either way, fuck Trent.

linnic

Mosco your reaction to the throuple cracked me the fuck up 😂 it really is a true whiplash moment

Dana L Powers-Green

Caleb was also probably able to steal Owelia’s non-maggot spell components. Which may also have limited her spell selection.

Kitsune Kokoro

Yeah, I'm guessing that'll be a Season 2 finale thing. I really don't feel like they've done enough buildup for that particular event yet. But who knows, there's been a lot of stuff that came up much earlier than I expected in the animation, and I've greatly enjoyed the reinterpretation of the campaign so far, so maybe I'll end up being wrong :)

David Johnson

As far as gods go, I always remember (roughly) the line from Larry Niven's "The Magic Goes Away" - "A god may answer your prayers, it may answer your enemy's prayers, it will *always* answer their own." I think Nott is a *lot* older than she looks/seems.

Kyle J Lynch

This was one of the moments I was dreading/excited to see animated. They did not dissapoint. One thing that gets me is how we learned this in the campaign. Caleb says: "Let me tell you a story about how I killed my mother and father" So hearing the "Let me tell you a story" at the beginning felt like a punch in the throat.

Gihellcy

Ah yea, the pain in the ass wizard, gotcha XD

Gihellcy

This episode wasn't a fine meal, this was a fudgin' royal feast :D Molly is a forkin' KING, Nott is just too sweet, Jester ... well she's still Jester XD And the Wido-Past of Mr. Caleb Widogast, that was just PEAK ~~ (and the Caleb / Astrid / Wulf polycule wasn't on my bingo, but heck I'll gladly take it ! ^^)

Ryan

I usually crack a joke about how shows treat trauma and a lore dump as two sides of the same coin, but deep fried christ on a stick this episode takes it to a new level. Only the fact that we're still fairly new to these characters makes it not as traumatic as, say, a certain episode of Wyonna Earp, season three. Still, maybe I should withdraw my recommendation that my parent's watch this... All these call outs to Avatar... I should watch it at some point. It's in the pile of "shows everyone but me has seen" along with ... a lot. I love your insights on the storytelling for Mighty Nein. The couple of movies I've worked on all the dialog felt like it was all plots and jokes. I always felt like the plot was driving the characters, not the other way around. I can't quite articulate it but the best movies and shows are organic - you can't go through the script with a set of highlighters and mark the exposition, the "you know what, Bob" dialog, the foreshadowing... and short form series gives the writers more time for the characters to breath. I hope someday to get to work on something half as good as this.

David Johnson

The animation this episode was so good I could *feel* those crystal shards going into the skin...and I *don't* have trypophobia.

FernAndGames

Based on episode titles, it seems like THAT won't come up until season 2 (I'm also thinking S2 finale) but who knows tbh. Tell u what tho, they're doing a damn good job foreshadowing it. They've done such a great job in general with this show, esp after this episode 🔥🔥

Yoshinatorsaurus

Or, she could just say his first name, Trent.

Welcome to the Ermendrud family BBQ... Yes... THAT is what we dubbed it. Yes we are very messed up mentally - mainly because of this SadBoi. *Gestures towards Liam O'Brien*

♪Trent thought I don't need them, though— Now I must relearn the spells I used to know!♫

Jessica V

I knew what was coming, it was not a surprise at all. But damn that was so rough and hard to watch

Bryce

Damn near word for word "my boy" speech. And for sure it will not be this season. LONG MAY HE REIGN

LikeCat

Our fucked up truple gets the recognition they diserve... One of them in particular (Eadwulf usually gets forgotten about by fans - its usually just „Bren and Astrid", but he was in that too)

Martin E Melcher

Was Ikithon and the conclave the wizards responsible for destroying the mine that Ripley, in Vox Machina made her inventions as a child? Was this an overarching world building even in the campaign?

Tyler Jones

The Mighty Nein need a cleric you say?

Miranda Corvus

One of them is voiced by the man voicing Trent Ikithon....Soooo more than likely yes

LikeCat

A. They have... „THE Cleric" B. Critters know what needs to happen first

ELS_Art

Oh boy here we go!

ELS_Art

She’s already healed more here than in the actual campaign. 🤭🤣

Geass

I thought Trent Ikithon looked more like Roku, but I suppose his younger self looks a bit more like Ozai.

Bemmie

Hard same.

Bemmie

This was powerful. Even though I watched all of mighty nein at the table top. The story is all there I know it all and it still tears my guts out. And I’m sorry but it’s going to hurt so much more.

LikeCat

After this episode (specifically after what Trent did to Bren and the other Volstruckers) what Ripley did in S3E7 (the factory she built that was powered by Residuum - yeah - and Vestiges) seem GOOD... Yeah once we take Percy out of the exation, Residuum is a DANGEROUS tool.

SpamtheTree34

In the campaign we hear about Caleb's backstory. That's it. Hear about it. This was heartwrenching

Liam Gradwell

Caleb’s origin story has to be one of the most darkest and tragic origin stories Critical Role has ever produced. You just can never get over that. Our poor little dirt wizard. 😭😱🖤

SQX Barto

There is a strong possibility they just wanted to remove the parents, so the organization is the only one they can be loyal to—also, an excellent loyalty test if the grooming was successful.

Suplee215

Thats another possibility. Why I said not saying if this is true or not. Just saying what is being presented.

ELS_Art

Also No his parents names were on the list and they indoctrinated him over the period of eight years give or take a year.

Morgana Ivy

As someone who watched the campaign, I thought I was ready for this episode, I was not. Watching Caleb's backstory play out in the show hit so much harder it's insane.

Corvo Joka

Izumi is Zuko's daughter and the Firelord after him.

morthasa

To be perfectly honest, he reminds me more of an evil Avatar Roku than Ozai.

Suplee215

The only thing that feels super different is Essek. I dont think theh can pull off what they did in tbe campaign in the animated show though. I saw a complaint about it because his motives are different in tbe campaign (trying not to spoil) and I can see that. I dont think thatll work in an animated show as much qjd i enjoy exploring a side of the lore we didnt. Some things just work better in a dnd campaign than a story.

Spadeas

If I had a nickel for everytime Liam would play a bisexual character with a sad backstory, I would at least have two nickels, if you retire the bisexual part, make it three nickels since he played Gaara in the Naruto's dub (but here come the killing the person who raised you for both Caleb and Gaara, while being treated as a weapon by a father figure). But yeah, this episode was hard to watch for the story, I don't mind the gory spect in animation (I survived some japanese animation from the 90's and that was something alright), I really liked the way they were telling the story from past and present, really shown us how he become what he become, while still maintenaning the tension and suprise effect, even if we knew that something might have happened to fuck him up like that. This episode really made me love Nott too, her motherly aspect really show here and make her deeper than JUST a goblin with an alcohol problem.

Suplee215

Should be noted they indoctrinated him his entire life. Before he even met Trent he was indoctrinated to be a good citizen of the empire. His parents were so proud he got given the chance for thar. Not blaming them at all. Trent Ikithon is the "Archmagd of civil influence". Hes the king's propaganda maker and he made society the way he wanted tk take advantage of loyalty like Calebs.

Suplee215

Yes. Both Ripley and the Briarwoodws come from the empire in the camapign and that seems to be the same. Lady briarwood was even a member of the same council

Christopher Malone

Honestly... the longer they hold off on E26, the better. I am not ready to go through that again, I NEED MORE TIME!

Chris P3

Vox Machina were great right from the start, but by the time you see them they're already an established adventure party. Mighty Nein takes the first half of the season to assemble (most of) our heroes and tells us who they are as individuals first and a team second. Also, the stark contrast between player characters in each campaign really shows off how versatile and creative the voice actors are.

Sarah H

Agree about Vox Machina. I enjoyed it, but the pacing was off for me because the group was already together in episode 1, and we learned their history through flashbacks. For me, that made the action feel rushed and repetitive, with one fight after the other. I liked Grog and Scanlan immediately for their personalities, but the rest I struggled to connect with or care about because it took a long time to actually get to know them and understand how they fit in the group. The Mighty Nein isn't already established, and so far, the pacing is way better. They're allowing us to see the bonds form, and I think that's such an important difference from what they did with VM. It feels like the beginning of a story, rather than being dropped in a couple of chapters ahead.

Dayash

Ill say this: Campaign 2 was VERY character focused like all the friendships and dynamics are basically THE highlight of it and it is definitely great that they have brought most of that already in a few episodes (really the difference between campaign and show rn seems to be the Plot aka the stuff about the Luxon and more so the order in which things are happening)

Todd Lucas

"That ship sailed across land in the opposite fucking direction!" OMG...I shot coffee out my nose at that one!!! But...she's not wrong. Of all the WTF moments in the show so far, that was one of the WTF-iest of all WTF moments because there was ZERO build up or lead in to it!

Todd Lucas

And going back and watching it again....the whole scene where Caleb is getting his BBQ Pit Master vibe on and giving the little Volstrucker the roasty-toasty treatment....my mind had vivid flashbacks of the second Fullmetal Alchemist series where Roy Mustang just absolutely torched Lust to death. And that's a very good reference to make.

JamJarWorks

Fjord and Jester: -suddenly feeling an uncomfortable sense of deja vu even though they're nowhere near the scene-

JamJarWorks

"I can heal people!" "She CAN heal people..."

ross lingard

i loved vox machina from the start but my favourite character is Percy then vax, keyleth, Scanlan, pike, vex and then grog is last.

Yoshinatorsaurus

"This is why you need a cleric!" And what is Jester, then? Chopped liver? Also, seems like Trent "stealing Caleb's powers" is a lot more metaphorical than I expected. It's not the ability to do magic that was lost, it was the crystals in his arm that let him substitute for spell components.

Yoshinatorsaurus

"We're going to get absolutely decimated, aren't we?" Yep, pretty much. Seeing Caleb's backstory play out like this was so painful to watch. Also, it's worth noting that Bren really did always want to serve the empire and his parents encouraged it. Trent merely took advantage of that loyalty and twisted it to convince him what he did to his parents needed to be done. Still slimy as hell, though.

Yoshinatorsaurus

As someone brand new to this campaign, I have to say, I'm surprised that Nott considers herself the parential figure in her and Caleb's relationship. I thought for sure it was the other way around. I can see it now, though. That speech she gave hit hard.

Angelus Lupus

Mosco "feeling things" about torture-domme Beau... Insert the clip of Velvette's "NO!" when Valentino was all "Damn Papi!" over unhinged Vox, LOL!

Angelus Lupus

"Problematic bisexual throuple" was clearly not on anyone's season 1 bingo card, lol!

Yoshinatorsaurus

Yeah, I was literally saying "No! Down girl!" 😅

Kadaver

Frumpkin was the name on the list of traitors because he scratched Trent. The parents getting caught in the burning home was just collateral damage. Unfortunate.

Tyler Dunn

Caleb even shares his Japanese VA with Mustang.

Bemmie

I only hope they do the conclusion of Caleb's story the justice they did the background here

Wesley Marshall

Just to clarify it’s not a spoiler. It’s showing how the flash back stuff was presented in Campaign 2 vs the show. They jump back and forth. Very good stuff

Tintros

-9:20 - Picturing hundreds of subscribers yelling 'OZAI!' at their screens.. lol. -22:00 I'd be shocked if this hasn't appeared on your discord as a screenshot :) It's such a visceral reaction. -36-ish Heh. Yeah, I'm curious enough to check out her reaction when she does it, just to see. :) -38 - 'Oh that's you..' that whole little taunt/rant, funny and adorable. :) Like watching a cat telling off (well in the observers heads anyway) a dog or a person :) -38:25 another fantastic face, you're really mugging for the camera in this one. -54:05 my playback froze and I didn't even notice because I thought Mosco was just frozen in shock. lol

Jasmine

7:22 I'm surprised they don't 13:55 if she knew how that would come back to haunt her. I guess I mean ironically

PWAW

I believe Liam O'Brien, who played Caleb in the campaign and voices him in the show, outright said that Caleb was, at least early in the campaign, straight up evil. At least in the DND sense of doing what he does for his own interest even if it harms others. We can agree or disagree with that but I think this episode really drives home why he said it.

Dooba Dooba

My favorite part of the flash back is that the other people Young Bren was with didnt leave even if they were burned too. Idk where the story goes yet but thats some true love
